From the Directors’ Box
ood afternoon, everyone, and
welcome to Cuthbury for today's
Southern League Division One
South & West fixture with our friends and
neighbours, Bashley. I hope all our visitors enjoy their stay with us today.
G
have just three points from their first four
league games but their Cup form has been
sparkling with wins over Welton Rovers
and Street in the competition so far. You
can be sure that no-one will be taking anything for granted in 12 days time.
It's fair to say that Bashley have not made
a great start to the season. The club has
seen a lot of changes in the past couple of
seasons but I believe they're now more
settled. I hope so - Bashley is a great club
with a proud history, and football in this
area will be better for seeing them strong
again.
Today sees the first draw for the new
Magpies 100 Club. Credit to Director
Steve Harvey whose initiative this is and
who has put in a lot of work to get the
idea off the ground. There are still lots
of numbers left so see Steve if you'd like
to help our football club grow. Thanks to
everyone who has joined so far.
Saturday's FA Cup win at Cowes Sports
was a crucial game for the Club as the
money we can earn from the FA Cup and,
to a lesser extent, the FA Trophy can give
a significant boost to our income. I know
the players were well aware of the game's
importance and they didn't let us down.
A professional & controlled performance
saw us on top from start to finish and 5-0
didn't flatter us. Well done lads, and full
marks to the Magpie fans who made the
trip to the Island to shout them on.
Finally, there will be a minute’s silence
before today's game in memory of Derek
Stroud who died recently. Derek played
for Wimborne in the 1940s before joining
Poole, Dorchester, Bournemouth and
Grimsby in a long and successful career
and will be missed by his many friends at
the Club.
Enjoy this afternoon’s game.

We now face Witheridge AFC of the
South West Peninsula League Premier
Division in the First Qualifying Round
here at Cuthbury on September 12th. The
SWPL Premier is the division that St
Austell are in, and you'll remember how
much trouble they gave us here in the
same competition last season. Witheridge

From the Dugout
Unfortunately we can’t bring you Steve’s
usual column, but instead here’s a transcript of his interview on BBC Radio Solent after Saturday’s FA Cup victory at
Cowes Sports - Ed
Everything we talked about that we wanted to do, we did on Saturday, and it was a
really professional performance by us. It
was crucial that we got off to a good start,
and the goal after four minutes provided
us with that. I thought we dominated from
there on.
Crucially at 2-0 at half-time there were a
couple of half-chances for Cowes and if
they’d scored it would have made it difficult for us. But we went on and got a third
and then the game opened up for us, and
we could have had a few more by the end.
We expected a tough game, and it was.
But when you look at the key moments,
that start was one of them. We came out
of the blocks really sharp, got the goal,
and dominated the first part of the opening period. That set the tone and I thought
they found it hard to live with our pace up
front. The directness of Carl Preston and
Sam Griffin, and being able to get crosses
into the box, provided us with lots of opportunities.
All goals are good but James Stokoe’s
second was probably the pick of the five.
We’ve pushed him up front in the last
couple of games and he gives us that different option. We’ve got Mark and people who can go down the side, but James
holds it up well . He’s a very strong play-
er, technically very good, and to be able
to strike it from just outside the box with
his left foot, when he’s right-footed,
shows how good a player he is.
It’s been a tough start to the season, and
we’ve played some teams who are going
to be up there near the top in our league.
Four straight defeats at the start of the
season was difficult to take. Everyone
feels a little bit of the pressure that you’ve
got to get your first points, and we did
that last week. You could see that we
were a lot more confident on Saturday,
and the win over Cowes is going to make
us even more confident.
We’re going to come up against a fighting
Bashley in the league game today, and
we’re at home in the next round of the FA
Cup. We’ll just keep working as hard as
we can, try to pick up points in the
league, and see if we can go on an FA
Cup run.
Steve Cuss
From the Dressing Room
H
i, and welcome to a lunchtime kickoff for our Bank Holiday Monday
game against Bashley in the league.
Because of printing deadlines, my column
was written before Saturday’s FA Cup
game at Cowes, but more about that later.
Our last home game was the 4-0 defeat by
North Leigh just over 2 weeks ago. We
knew they were a good footballing side, so
it was a tall order to be facing them just 4
days after we’d scored 5 against Winchester but lost. Although we had an early
chance, they soon got on top, and we just
couldn’t get a foot-hold in the game. Their
first goal was a great strike with the outside of his right foot - a terrific piece of
skill which on another day could have
gone anywhere, but again we found ourselves 2 down at the break.
At the start of the second half we looked
the more likely to score. Unfortunately
another defensive mistake let them in for a
third. For their fourth I made a good tackle
on their lad but the ball ricocheted back to
him and he put it past Harvs.
When you’re on a losing run luck seems to
go against you. And there’s a tendency to
be a bit tentative as you don’t want to
make mistakes.
The air conditioning broke down and was
blowing out hot air - it was like sitting in a
sauna! I told the lads that we needed a win
and that we had to work our socks off.
And to their credit, in the heat of the afternoon, the boys kept their work-rate up.
Burnham were a massive side, but we
looked solid at the back. We conceded
from a free kick to be one down at the
break. Then we totally dominated the second half. Gambo scored 2 typical goals,
and in between them Oli volleyed in Billy’s free kick. The boys were all over Oli,
not just because his goal gave us the lead,
but also because he’s had a tough start to
the season and we were so pleased for
him. We were much the fitter side, and
finished really strongly.
Ryan made his Southern League debut at
Burnham, and after looking a bit shell
shocked at the start, he really grew into
the game. He’s quite a prospect.
Bill Elliott hasn’t had much game time,
but he’s neat and tidy on the ball, and
doesn’t give possession away.
And a word for Stokes who’s played the
last 2 up front. He’s great at holding the
ball up and bringing others, especially
Gambo, into play.
The following Tuesday we travelled to
Taunton, another side who’d made a good
start to the season. Our performance was
much better, and we got through the first
quarter without conceding. But by halftime we were again 2 down. I thought we
dominated the second half. Our goal with
10 minutes to go, came a bit too late, but it
left Taunton hanging on for the points.
My “brother-in-law” Tom Biles has gone
to Hamworthy where he’ll get more
games. He’s probably leaving the area at
the end of the season, and didn’t want all
the Southern League travelling without
getting much game time.
Last Saturday we travelled to Burnham. If
you remember it was a scorcher of a day,
and our coach journey was a nightmare.
Enjoy today’s game.
Finally, Cowes in the FA Cup? Here’s my
prediction. I fancy a clean sheet and a 2-0
to us. You’ll know by now if I was right.

Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South & West 2015-16 at 29 Aug
Wimborne Town 0 North Leigh 4 - 15th August 2015 - Ken Fergus reports
The Magpies went down to their third
defeat in three games at Cuthbury against
a strong North Leigh side. Defensive
errors again cost Wimborne, although
there was also some good playby the
home side, particularly at the start of the
second half.
Steve Cuss was able to welcome back
Jon Blake & Franklyn Clarke into the
starting line-up with Morgan Turner &
Patrick Wilson dropping to the bench
from the line-up which started against
Winchester.
It was the Magpies who could have
scored as early as the 2nd minute when a
ball from Mark Gamble almost played
Sam Griffin in. But it was the visitors
who gradually got on top and they went
ahead on 24 minutes when Kieran Sanders dribbled into the box from the right
and his curling shot with the outside of
his right foot beat Jason high at his far
post. A great strike.
North Leigh could have - and probably
should have - doubled their lead soon
afterwards when Jamie Cook put the ball
wide from right in front of goal. At this
point Wimborne were conceding possession much too easily and it was no surprise when Calum McNish put the
visitors two up on 38 minues. A lovely
one-two in the box beat the Magpie defence and McNish slotted home with
ease.
So, for the second time in four days,
Wimborne faced a two goal half-time
deficit. However, to their credit, they
came out all guns blazing at the start of
the second period. Kicking towards the
hospital, they were playing some fine
football with Mark Gambleat the heart of
most of it. A touch from Gambo went
just wide on 49 minutes and then Franklyn hit a shot past the post two minutes
later. Franklyn had been pushed into a
more forward role after the break and he
was causing problems at this stage. Billy
Maybury was also pushed forward in
support of Sam Griffin down the left and
he produced a few nice touches.
The Magpies needed to score in this period of dominance and, when they didn't,
North Leigh came right back into the
game.
Morgan Turner & Patrick Wilson replaced Clarke and Blake on the hour.
Shortly after that a header from Sam
Griffin went just over. On 67 minutes a
lovely free-kick from Sam was just too
high for James Stokoe and then, 6 minutes later, came the killer goal for the
visitors. Wimborne were caught in possession at the back and Calum McNish
ran through to grab his second goal.
Tom Biles replaced Billy Maybury on 78
minutes but one minute later North Leigh
sub George Seacole was allowed to run a
long way before beating the advancing
Jason Harvell.
It ended 4-0 to North Leigh and Wimborne can have no complaints about the
result. That's three wins out of three for
the visitors to put them on top of the table.
Taunton Town 2 Wimborne Town 1 - 18 Aug 2015 - Ken Fergus reports
Although this was Wimborne’s fourth defeat in four games, this was very much an
improved performance by the Magpies
particularly in the second-half.
Enforced changes because of work commitments meant that Steve Cuss brought in
Morgan Turner for Mark Gamble and
Patrick Wilson for Adam Costello in the
starting line-up. Franklyn Clarke took
Costello’s place in defence, and James
Stokoe was pushed up front alongside
Turner.
On a lovely night for football and a very
good playing surface, a mistake on 11
minutes let Taunton in for their first goal.
Josh Klein-Davies beat his defender on the
right by-line and his cross was turned in
by Jordan Rogers.
Six minutes later Taunton spurned a great
opportunity to increase their lead. On 21
minutes Carl Preston won a corner and
Sam Griffin’s ball in just eluded Patrick
Wilson. A good run on the right starting
on the touch line led to a shot across goal
by a Taunton player who was allowed to
run far too far. Just as on the previous Saturday against North Leigh, Wimborne
were guilty of giving the ball away far too
easily, whereas Taunton were much better
in possession. On 37 minutes Stokoe got
to the by-line and crossed a dangerous
ball, but it was cleared.
Then came Taunton’s second goal. A
cross from the right by Jamie Price was
turned in by Jordan Rogers for his second.
Sam Griffin was put through just before
half-time but he delayed his shot and was
dispossessed. So at half-time Taunton
went in two goals ahead.
It was a different story in the second-half
as Wimborne came out strongly and
Stokoe shot just wide on 52 minutes. Five
minutes later Steve Cuss brought on Ant
Waters, wide on the left, for Turner, and
moved Preston up front. On 63 minutes
Waters cut in from the left but his shot
was saved by the keeper. Wimborne were
looking a lot more lively. Taunton looked
solid in defence, and still posed a threat at
the other end. On 74 minutes Bill Elliott
came on for Sam Griffin in a like-for-like
change, and immediately showed up well.
On 80 minutes Wimborne got the goal
their play in the second half deserved. Waters was fed on the left by Billy Maybury
and his clever cross was controlleded by
Preston who calmly put the ball past the
Taunton keeper. 2-1 to Taunton with 10
minutes left. Wimborne were clearly on
top but Taunton were happy to play out
time without too many alarms.
James Stokoe ran his heart out in his unaccustomed up-front role these days, Carl
Preston looked good, and Waters and Elliott looked very good when they came on.
Still work to do, but the signs are there.
Burnham 1 Wimborne Town 3 - Aug 22nd 2015 - Ken Fergus reports
A dominant second half performance saw
Steve Cuss's men record their first win of
the season at Burnham. Trailing 1-0 at the
break, the Magpies took all three points
with three goals in an eight minute second
half spell from Mark Gamble (2) & Ian
Oliver.
On an extremely hot day in Buckinghamshire, Steve Cuss gave 17-year-old Ryan
Johnson his first Southern League start.
He played at left-back with Ian Oliver
moving to centre-back alongside Billy
Maybury. Mark Gamble returned after
missing the Taunton defeat through work
commitments and he was partnered up
front by James Stokoe. The midfield was
Franklyn Clarke & Patrick Wilson with
Sam Griffin & Carl Preston playing wide.
Jason Harvell was in goal and Skipper
Scott Arnold completed the lineup.
The first half was a scrappy affair played
in intense heat. Mark Gamble was able to
get clear a couple of times but couldn't
find the net. At the other end, Burnham
had a succession of corners without really
troubling the Magpie defence, Burnham's
Ed Chappe was running the show from
midfield and it was perhaps what Burnham
deserved when they took the lead from a
Dominic Rhone free-kick five minutes before the break.
As has happened a few times this season
already, Wimborne played much better in
the second half. On 47 minutes Gambo
was through again and Zaki Oulah in the
home goal was a little fortunate that
Mark's goalbound effort struck the keeper's arm. Wimborne were well on top now
with Mark Gamble looking sharp and the
whole team much more on the front foot
and denying Burnham the room they had
in the first half.
The equaliser came on 63 minutes. Yet
again, Wimborne managed to get Mark
Gamble one on one; the striker's speed
took him clear and he placed the ball calmly past Oulah to level.
That goal seemed to energise the entire
team and six minutes later the Magpies
took the lead. Billy Maybury took a freekick on the right yards inside the Burnham
half and his perfect delivery was volleyed
home by Ian Oliver from the corner of the
six yard box. Great skill from Ollie. And
two minutes later the Magpies made it
three when Mark Gamble again went
through the middle and finished with class.
Steve Cuss brought Ant Waters on for Carl
Preston on 78 minutes and two minutes
later it took a good save from Oulah to deny Gambo his hat-trick after the ball had
bobbed around in the Burnham six yard
box following a corner. Mark went off to
deserved applause one minute later, Morgan Turner replacing him. Bill Elliott
came on for James Stokoe in the final
minute and when ref Adam Crysell blew
for full time, the Magpies had their first
three points of the season.
So, two typical Mark Gamble goals gave
Wimborne the win and the second half
performance was very encouraging. Billy
Maybury & James Stokoe are worth special mentions and once we'd got to grips
with the Burnham midfield, the result
wasn't in doubt. Ryan Johnson can be
pleased with his debut - he looks a real
prospect - and Sam Griffin had his best
game of the season so far.
Wimborne Town: Harvell, Arnold (c), Oliver, Wilson, Maybury, Johnson, Griffin,
Clarke, Stokoe (Elliott 90), Gamble (Turner 81), Preston (Waters 78). Unused subs:
Costello & Roast.

Cowes Sports 0 Wimborne Town 5 - 29 Aug 2015 - Ken Fergus reports
Goals from Franklyn Clarke, Mark Gamble, Carl Preston, and a double from
James Stokoe gave Wimborne a comfortable win at Cowes in the Preliminary
Round of the FA Cup. This was a thoroughly professional display from the Magpies and served to emphasise the gulf in
class between Steps 4 and 5.
James Stokoe again started up front.
It took only 2 minutes for the visitors to
go ahead. A long free-kick from Billy
Maybury found Stokoe and his header
beat the keeper.
Wimborne were just too quick and too
sharp for their Wessex league opponents.
But it was not until just before half-time
when they doubled their lead. Clarke was
set free on the half-way line and he took
the ball past the keeper and slotted home
from an acute angle. 2-0 at half-time.
Five minutes into the second half Stokoe
flicked the ball onto Gamble and he scored
in his customary manner.
Cowes had a strong penalty shout turned
down a minute later.
On 58 minutes Stokoe scored his second
with a left foot shot from 20 yards.
Jason Harvel made a super save on 63
minutes in a rare Cowes attack.
Magpies went 5-0 up on 67 minutes with a
lovely pass from Stokoe to Gamble on the
left wing. He unselfishly crossed to Preston for a tap-in.
Wimborne could have scored more but
seemed happy to settle for 5.
Man of the match - James Stokoe - he won
headers all over the park and scored 2 very
good goals. Franklyn Clarke was not far
behind as he and Patrick Wilson dominated the midfield.
N-LP report 23 Aug 2015 - “Coast is Clear for Seasiders”
Clevedon Town have signed a £500,000 deal with a national sports company - days after
pulling back from the brink of extinction. The deal will see the Western Premier newboys
rename their ground the Everyone Active Stadium. Leisure operator Everyone Active
will manage the stadium in Davis Lane with the aim of providing more facilities for the
community. It will build a state-of-the-art gym inside one of the stands. The facilities will
help the club with their training. Building work is set to start in November.
The Seasiders were relegated from Evo-Dtik Southern One South & West because of th
epoor standard of their floodlights. But Lewis said he has now spent £30,000 on bringing
them up to scratch so they could kick off the new season.

Evesham, a market town in Worcestershire, has a population of 23,576, according to the
2011 census. It is located roughly equidistant between Worcester, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon. It lies within the Vale of Evesham, an area comprising the flood plain
of the River Avon, which has been renowned for market gardening. The town centre,
situated within a meander of the river, is regularly subject to flooding.
The town was founded around an 8th-century abbey, one of the largest in Europe, which
was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. During the 13th century, one
of the two main battles of England's Second Barons' War took place near the town,
marking the victory of Prince Edward who later became King Edward I.

Wimborne Town Ladies 2 AFC Bournemouth Ladies 2 - 25 Aug
Played on the 4G pitch at Canford Arena,
this was a fixture between two of the area’s
newest and youngest Ladies sides.
From the kick off it was evident that both
sides were confident in their play. Bournemouth had the early territorial advantage
with Wimborne defending well, maintaining control and releasing the ball to feet
whenever possible.
On 10 minutes Wimborne had a free kick
on the right, a well delivered cross was
guided past the Cherries keeper by Sian
Tilly. This raised our confidence and we
were on the front foot. Bournemouth
showed a similar defiance to us, building
from the back, using the width well, particularly down their left.
It was down this flank that the 2nd goal
came. A player broke down the wing, cut
across and fired a fierce shot. It was well
saved by the keeper, but it fell to a Bournemouth striker who scored from short range.
It was a very even half.
With the unfortunate withdrawal of Erin
Leonard, due to possible concussion, we
conceded a soft 2nd goal after some uncertainty by our stand-in keeper.
Instead of letting our heads drop, we took
the game to our opponents, going close on
a number of occasions. On 70 minutes a
well timed run was superbly finished, only
for it to be judged offside. Bournemouth’s
substitutions made a big difference with
their midfield setting play well, with some
wonderful through balls. We defended
well, with Player Of The Match, Poppy
Chapman, playing a role far in advance of
her years. More chances followed and
from one of a succession of our corners the
ball fell to Shelley Cheater, who duly finished well into the top corner for 2 - 2
A very tense last 5 minutes followed, with
neither side able to find the winner.
So honours even, two fantastic squads of
players, all playing progressive, passing
football. It was a joy to watch.
A massive thanks to all who attended, a
fantastic crowd, particularly in that horrendous rain.
Next up a home tie @ Cuthbury, in the
SSE Ladies FA Cup vs Penn Mill Ladies,
Sunday 6th September k.o. 14:00.

Recent History of Bashley F.C.
2013-14 - Major changes within the club structure and a degree of uncertainty led to
Club stalwarts Paul Gazzard and Stewart Kearn given the daunting task of re-building
the team which necessitated a series of budget cuts. Alas results went against us, several
players moved on after a mid-season restructuring which also saw Stewart Kearn step
down. John Pyatt from Brockenhurst FC filled the vacant position to undertake the hard
task with Paul of trying to steer the club away from the relegation zone. But alas the club
was relegated from the Southern Premier to Division One South & West.
The exit of players, together with a lack of club executives and sponsors, put the club in
a perilous position. Bashley, despite the actions of loyal fans and supporters who contributed to a ‘Save Bashley’ appeal which allowed the club to see out the season were
very close to being wound up. At the last moment the current board stepped in and after
a major reorganisation with the broom firmly brushing many players, staff and helpers
into the past, Bashley started season 2014-15 on a zero budget with a team of new young
players and the return of Andy Darnton as joint manager alongside Graham SpeechleyPrice. Life for Bashley FC looked hopeful.
Darnton resigned his position as manager in mid-October 2014 with Graham SpeechleyPrice also stepping down to allow Martin Spiers take the reins, Graham concentrated his
efforts in a commercial role within the club. Spiers role only lasted a few weeks with
Dominic Cuncliffe taking over the hot seat following Spiers resignation towards the end
of November 2014. Cuncliffe’s assistant was Paul Morris who doubled up with Tom
Prodomo with assistance behind the scenes from Graham after Cuncliffe resigned his
position out of the blue in December.
At the start of February 2015 Graham was asked by the Executive to take over as caretaker manager until the end of the season which resulted in Prodomo leaving the club.
With the zero budget still in place Speechley-Price battled through to the end of the season with Bashley generally playing well but losing due to small mistakes. A mighty effort was needed to finish away from the relegation zone, but good performances were
not regular enough, and a bottom of the pile and relegation was the result.
Meanwhile Bashley Reserves under the guidance of Andy Howard took the 2014-15
Wyvern League title in fine style showing there is promise ahead for the New Forest
Club and an exciting 2015-16 season for the reserves in a higher League.
The FA gave Bashley a reprieve in May 2015, so rather than a drop down to the Wessex
League, Southern League football continues at Bashley Road in the South and West Division for the 2015-16 season.
A new management team was appointed late June 2015, ex-Chelsea, Millwall and Leyton Orient player David Stride took the manager’s reins assisted by his brother Glen an
ex-Bournemouth player. These appointments lasted just a month.
Following the Club’s AGM a new Executive consisting of four life vice-presidents and a
new Chairman elected to bring in their own new management team. This meant a return
to Bashley Road for Steve Riley taking over the hot seat.

The Big Interview - Bill Elliot
What’s your football playing history?
Been a centre midfielder most of my life
but have had brief spells playing both on
the wing, playing full back and playing
centre back. I played for Broadstone when
I was really young but due to two knee ligament injuries and two knee operations I
spent three years completely out of football. I returned when I was 16 to play for
Wimborne U18's for two years and had
spells in the first team for my final year
there! For the last four years I’ve been
playing for my Uni side (Chichester)
What position do you prefer to play in?
Centre midfield
What’s the best game you’ve played in?
For my university team I played in a game
against Portsmouth Uni. We went into the
game knowing whoever won would win
the league that year. By half time we were
2-0 down but we played an amazing second half and won 4-2. Amazing because of
the results and also because Portsmouth
were our rivals!
Why did you join the Magpies?
As I'd played for them under Alex Brown
a few times before I went to uni, plus I had
met Steve during that time it just made
sense for me to come back! Plus I have
always wanted Wimborne to do well being
as I’ve been a Wimborne boy all my life.
What are your first thoughts of WTFC?
Great club with great support. I like the
relationship the players that have been
here for a while have with the supporters,
makes it seem like a much closer club. The
team itself should have a good chance of
success this year due to a group of good
players and also good lads.
Who is your favourite professional player?
Although he doesn't play anymore my favourite player has always been Zinedine
Zidane. I just felt he was the best at everything he did when he played whether it be
his vision, his passing or his capabilities
on the ball he just always excited me when
watching him play.
What can we supporters expect from you?
My main aim for this season is to gain a
starting position in the team as quickly as
possible. I'm a very hard working player
both in training and in matches and I love
being on the ball so try to do everything I
can to get on it within a game.
What’s your ambitions in football?
My aim is simply to play as high a level as
I'm given the chance to play. As long as I
am playing football regularly I'm happy
but obviously the higher the better!
What do you do for a day job?
I am a PE teacher at a secondary school.
What advice would you give to a youngster
who wants a career in football?
Be as ambitious as you can, take risks and
put in 100% effort in training and games,
eventually you will be given the chance.
Tell us a little-known fact about yourself.
Billy is a family name, my dad, grandad
and great grandad were all called Bill Elliott as well. The film coming out has made
that very unfortunate.
Thanks for your time, Bill

There are more questions than answers - we try to help you with your problems
Question
When work and time allows, I like to cycle to the Cuthbury for a game.
However, it leaves me tight for time to have something to eat beforehand, and get to the
ground. Do you have a suggestion which could help?
From Jason
P.S. Do you think I should replace my worn racing saddle?
Answer
We’re of an age when comfort is more important than fashion or speed.
So here’s a suggestion which could be the solution to both your problems, Jason.
Next time you’re cycling to the Cuthbury, tie a naan-bread (preferably one without too
much garlic) on your saddle before setting out. It should make your ride more comfortable, with the bonus that when you arrive you’ll have a warm snack ready to eat.
