Our Promise to You
Environmental Projects provide comprehensive and thorough eradication of Japanese Knotweed, we guarantee to
treat, remove and eradicate Japanese Knotweed from your site.
Japanese Knotweed eradication is a speciality of ours and in an industry already saturated with ‘Knotweed
Removal Specialists’ you can be assured to receive from us straightforward honest advice from a company that
has amassed over twenty-two years experience working alongside some of the biggest names in the civil and rail
industry.
As a company we believe Japanese Knotweed eradication is not just about enhancing the environment but also
the public and client knowledge in regards to this highly invasive weed. With our proactive approach to eradication
and education we help to provide environmental sustainability for future generations.
The Knotweed Invasion
Introduced in the mid 19th Century as an ornamental plant this highly invasive and hardy species has now become a
national threat.
The plant has no natural predators in the UK and therefore flourishes in a variety of environments causing a
detrimental impact to most ecosystems. Distribution normally occurs through the mismanagement of the plant,
usually the result of an anthropogenic process such as spreading, uncontrolled cutting or poor transportation.
Once established the plant’s complex rhizome system can extend to over three metres deep and spread to a
circumference of up to seven metres from the initial stem. In comparison to its rhizome system the overground
growth is deceptively attractive, with intensely coloured heart shaped leaves accompanied by small white flowers.
During the winter season the plant looses its foliage and develops a bamboo like appearance.
In our experience a potential dormancy period of up to and in some cases over seven years can complicate and
intensify this hardy plant’s existence.
Knotweed and the Law
• Japanese Knotweed is classed as controlled waste. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 states
that Japanese Knotweed and soil containing root/rhizomes must be disposed of at a licensed disposal
facility.
• Section 14(2) of the Countryside and Wildlife Act 1981 states it is an offence to cause the spread of
Japanese Knotweed.
• By causing the spread of Japanese Knotweed you could be subject to a £5000 fine and six months
imprisonment or under more extreme circumstances an unlimited fine and two years imprisonment.
• Under common law you can be sued for costs and damages if you allow Japanese Knotweed to spread.
