The winner is liable for any ta xes that could occur in connection with the prize. 175 zawatch .com GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL COMPETITION Original fun in Glashütte On October 27 two lucky Plaza Watch readers in the Plaza Watch – Glashütte Original competition were received by Glashütte Original in their manufacture in the German village of Glashütte. The first competition for Plaza Watch readers was a huge success. Especially for the two winners: Peter Gustafsson, fashion store manager for H&M in Vienna, Austria, and Till Sieber, a photographer and marketing CEO, who splits his time between Toulouse, France, and Manila in the Philippines. When the lucky two stepped out of the black limousines that drove them from the airport to the manufacture they were greeted not only by Glashütte Original’s Christina Murczek, but also mountains dressed in their proudest yellow and red autumn attire. – I was curious, and I entered the competition because I love the magazine. But to be quite honest I feared that a factory visit could be boring. But I was completely wrong, said Mr. Sieber with a big loud laugh, something that turned out to be a trademark of his. P H O T O F R A N K H Ö H L E R W or d s A n d ers M o d ig 62 GLASHÜTTE ORIGINAL COMPETITION – It was super interesting to see the various stages of the manufacture. The attention to detail with Glashütte Original is absolutely amazing, continued Mr. Sieber, who turned out to be a funny storyteller who was able to get the most concentrated watchmaker laughing. Unlike the approximately 8 000 annual visitors to the manufacture, the duo and I were given access into the holiest chamber of the manufacture: the atelier where the most complicated tourbillons and other high horology intricacies are created. We also tried our hands at watchmaking. Or at least the three of us tried screwing a screw into a balance wheel, an act made possible thanks to a microscope. The winners now have a diploma to prove that they eventually made it. Me too. Though it does seem absolutely impossible to match the professional pace of six screws per minute. Peter Gustafsson describes himself as a novice when it comes to watches: – I have learnt so much on this visit. And through seeing, I realise how much work that goes into prestige watches. Now I can understand the price tags. And I also find the heritage of Glashütte Original super interesting, especially the DDR past. I think they could use this even more in their designs and communication. They should be proud about it – especially some of the cool designs from that era. In the evening Glashütte Original's CEO Dr Frank Müller hosted a dinner at Schloss Eckberg, from where you can overlook the river Elbe that runs through Dresden. In a chambre separée in the 1860s castle we enjoyed a casual dinner, during which Mr. Müller generously shared some future visions. For instance, he revealed that there are some designs underway that should appeal to Mr. Gustafsson’s retro yearnings. After dinner a limousine took us back to the luxurious Taschenberg Palais Kempinski hotel in Dresden where we all spent the night. – I wish life was this good all the time, said Mr. Gustafsson before flying back to Vienna. A fantastic host throughout the visit was Christina Murczek who was amazed by the joviality of the visitors. Said Ms Murczek: – We had a lot of fun. I will never forget the Plaza Watch visit. 63 COMPETITION COMPETITION l emaiin to w .com zawatch ion@pla competit Would you like to be a VIP guest during a day hosted by Tag Heuer, the watch world’s foremost racing brand, and Plaza Watch? Together with the Swiss brand born in 1860 we offer you a unique opportunity to become part of the magic process by which racing-inspired watches come to life. If you win, we’ll fly you to Switzerland from your nearest international airport, pick you up in a limousine from Geneva airport, and bring you to TAG Heuer’s amazing manufacture in La Chaux de-Fonds — right in the heart of Switzerland’s watch-making world. Here you will meet master watchmakers working with their hands to create the racing-inspired time machines worn by people like Lewis Hamilton, Leonardo DiCaprio and Maria Sharapova. You will see everything up close and get answers to everything you always wanted to know about watches but were afraid to ask. You will also have a hands-on experience carrying out some microscopic work. For a watch fanatic this is like being part of the great Creation. Our visit will also include the TAG Heuer 360 museum. Surrounded by interesting interactive design, we will explore the history of the brand through a unique vintage collection and 360-degree computer screens. In the last issue of Plaza Watch we asked our readers to email the answer to win a luxurious trip to Switzerland, to the TAG Heuer manufacture and 360 museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Alex Rose from England and Havard Tandberg from Switzerland were the two lucky winners. I thought one of my mates at work was having me on, laughs 29-year-old Alex Rose from London when we meet at the Zurich airport on a drizzly September day. Havard Tandberg, a 35-year-old cosmopolitan based in the Swiss town of Zug, also had luck on his side. – Since I entered the competition I have moved from Germany to Switzerland and I rarely switch on my German phone; the number I had given to Plaza Watch. But luckily the phone was turned on, and here I am, said the Norwegian-born Tandberg who used to live in Singapore. Alex and Havard, both self-confessed watch fanatics, had known for years that TAG Heuer celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2010. – A lot of people out there don’t realise that the brand is so old, says Alex. – I know, this is something we will push more in our communication for 2010, said Marc Deckenbrock from TAG Heuer’s sponsor and communication department. 360° experience C L O C K w I S E t h is p a g e F R O M TH E T O P L E F T : mo v eme n t : T he monaco v 4 i s no w in pro d uction . w a t erfro n t : marc d ec k en b roc k , a l e x ro s e an d ha v ar d tan d b erg c l utching their f a v ourite maga z ine in f ront o f hote l pa l a f itte ’ s f i v e - s tar , contemporar y w ater f ront b unga l o w s . n e u c h â t el : a l e x an d ha v ar d en j o y ing the me d ie v a l character o f the cit y . n o t o n l y w a t c h es : among tag heuer ’ s pro d uct s there i s a l s o a popu l ar range o f e y w ear . d i n n er p a r t y : Vice pre s i d ent f or mar k eting an d pro d uct d e s ign s t é phane l in d er j oine d the w inner s f or a d inner at the hote l . 3 6 0 ° t a g h e u er m u se u m : Bran d H eritage manager M athi l d e T ournoi s ga v e a tour o f the mu s eum . 150 The first highlight of the journey was the five-star contemporary comfort of the Palafitte hotel, with the winners staying in wooden bungalows on stilts on lake Neuchâtel. TAG Heuer’s vice president for marketing and product design Stéphane Linder joined the group for an exquisite dinner at the hotel, whose chefs TAG H EU ER COM PETITI O N offer some of the best cuisine in the region. – It is always interesting to meet other watch fanatics and discuss the industry, Stéphane says. – It was so nice to have dinner with two reps from TAG Heuer and to see how laid-back they were, Alex says. After a good night’s sleep, the winners were treated to a guided tour of the TAG Heuer 360 museum with Brand Heritage manager Mathilde Tournois. Do you think of white walls and a boring day out when you hear the word museum? Well, this is most certainly not the case here. Architect Eric Carson has built a round room like the inside of a watch. Thematic glass and metal displays resembling movement parts show the 15 decades of brand history, from the founder Edouard Heuer to the V4. In the ceiling 360 degrees of projections show horological and adventuring highlights. The spherical experience is enhanced by the shiny black marble floor reflecting both the displays and the projections. Naturally brand ambassadors like Lewis Hamilton, Leonardo DiCaprio and Uma Thurman are displayed, but there are also “accidental” ambassadors like Barack Obama who has worn TAG Heuer on various occasions. One of the bigger displays is devoted to the most iconic Heuer watch of all time, the square Monaco 1969 worn by Steve McQueen in the film Le Mans. There’s more than wristwatches and pocket watches here too. A lot of attention is also devoted to the company’s impressive sports timekeeping C L O C K w I S E t h is p a g e F R O M TH E T O P L E F T : o n t h e looko u t : A l e x ro s e p l a y ing aroun d w ith the magni f y ing g l a s s u s e d to e x p l ore the mechanica l high l ight s . e a rl y t imi n g d e v ices : e v er s ince tag heuer w a s f oun d e d 1 5 0 y ear s ago b y e d ouar d heuer , timing d e v ice s ha s b een an integra l part o f the b ran d ’ s pro d uct port f o l io . co n t em p or a r y w a t c h : the mu s eum i s d e d icate d b oth to v intage an d contemporar y w atche s . g oo d y b o x : A f ter l unch the w inner s got the opportunit y to ha v e a c l o s e l oo k at part o f the v intage co l l ection . heuer mo n a co 1 9 6 9 : the actua l w atch w orn b y s te v e mc q ueen in the f i l m l eman s . The changing screens, the pictures and the watches all give you an incredible experience, says Havard who works in IT. – I knew a bit about the history and their timekeeping, but I was surprised about how rich the heritage is, Alex says. The museum is private, but most of the time the public is also welcome as long as they book a visit a week in advance. Modern manufacture After lunch Harry Schumacher, training and technical advisor, showed the winners around the factory where 400 people work. Thanks to constantly updated machinery – a lot of it from 2009 – the workshops are arguably the most modern in the Swiss watch industry. The laboratory-like environments require white coats, and we passed anti-static carpets and sticky, anti-dust carpets before passing the security doors into the inner sanctum where the timepieces are born. Stéphanie Minana took us through the rigorous testing process including water immersion, temperature testing, pressure testing, humidity testing, shake simulation and wear and tear to mention a few. – We know that every watch that leaves the factory works to 100 percent, Mr Schumacher says. – It was a true pleasure to welcome Plaza Watch readers to Switzerland, and it is great that we are now able to show you the V4 workshop. Now we have working pieces going to the market in 2009 after a five-year adventure where we have developed a completely new technology, Marc Deckenbrock says. Alex, before returning to London where he works as a product designer, mainly designing watches for a collectables company, was very pleased at the end of the trip. – I’ve learnt a hell of a lot in the last two days. To see the whole process of a watch from start to finish, the attention to detail and also how everyone seemed to love their work makes me appreciate TAG Heuer watches even more. Says Havard: – I have always been interested in watches; for me to see up close something that has been part of my entire life, to actually see models soon to be released on the market – especially the opportunity to look at a running V4 movement, to see the rubber belts turning in a big microscope, to talk to the people who make it, to see how passionate they are– all this gave me a unique experience of a lifetime!
