The well-being of your ornamental fish highly depends on the correct nutrition. Fish require food as they would find in their natural habitats, because what they find there provides plenty of variety. Among others, insects, larvae, worms, algae, plants and fruit are on the menu. Depending on the fish species, they prefer to eat more meat or more plants. Fish eat themselves healthy – with sera Only the best from over 40 ingredients is used for sera fish food. Therefore, sera fish foods contain more natural ingredients and less fat than most common foods. The multivitamin complex in sera foods is especially carefully composed. With the sera foods, vitamin C is added in the correct ratio with the fat, allowing the fish organism to sufficiently burn up the fat. Organ fattening, indolence and pale colors have no chance this way! Natural herbs in sera fish food do not only contain many healthy ingredients but also make the sera food very tasty and appetizing for the fish. 3 Best ingredients in sera fish food The neutral trophological test* of sera ornamental fish food proves the high quality of the sera ingredients. Only in valuable natural food such as sera ornamental fish food with Spirulina algae the level in natural carotenes is high enough to make the colors of ornamental fish develop strongly. Stinging nettle Soybeans 5 Correct food form Eating behavior of the fish According to their eating habits, fish dwell in different water zones in nature. Therefore, there are fish in your aquarium that mainly live near the water surface, and there are species which prefer to roam in the middle water layers. Yet different ones dig for food at the bottom or live below roots or rocks. Fish with straight back with a mouth directed upwards and a dorsal fin shifted backwards prefer to stay near the water surface. Typical examples are hatchetfish and egglaying toothcarps (such as killifish). These fish species like to nibble on food flakes floating on the water. Fish with bended dorsal and ventral contours plus a mouth facing forwards prefer to stay in the middle water layer. Among these fish, for example, are neon tetras, discus and most barbs. These fish chase their food in the middle aquarium water layers and prefer to eat granulated food that floats in the water. However, they will also enthusiastically nibble at food tablets that you have pressed to the aquarium glass. Fish that dwell on the bottom have a flat belly with a mouth directed downwards. Armored catfish, suckermouth catfish and clown loaches are best known species of such fish. Food tablets and chips are the ideal nutrition form. 6 Do not only look at the fishes’ mouth Food appearance in the water is also crucial for the correct nutrition of your fish, because fish have very different eating organs. The floating soft granulate sera vipagran is a food that adapts to the eating possibilities of the ornamental fish as in nature. It becomes soft as butter in water 1 cm Stomach e.g., dwarf cichlid big mouth, narrow throat sera vipagran is effortlessly chewed and swallowed 1 cm Stomach e.g., characin small mouth with jaw teeth, narrow throat Particles are bitten off sera vipagran and swallowed, using the lips and front teeth but does not swell, fall apart or cloud the water. sera vipagran keeps its taste for a long time. Furthermore, it is excellently suited for use in automatic feeders such as the serafeed A. 1 cm Stomach e.g., cichlid large mouth, wide throat sera vipagran can be swallowed whole, does not scratch, does not swell 1 cm Stomach e.g., barbs small mouth with pharyngeal teeth, narrow throat Particles are bitten off sera vipagran using the lips, then crushed in the throat and effortlessly swallowed 7 sera staple diet The sera vipan product family – well-proven premium quality in every water layer The perfectly balanced composition, the contents in valuable minerals and trace elements and the multivitamin complex including long-term stabilized vitamin C make the products of the sera vipan family a healthy staple diet for all fish. sera vipan Floating premium flake food. Staple diet for all fish that like to nibble on their food at the water surface. sera vipan can remain at the water surface for hours and does not fall apart. Nutrients and vitamins remain locked within the flake. sera vipagran soft granulate Floating, soft-as-butter granulate for fish that chase for food in the middle water zones (see page 7). 8 sera vipachips Sinking premium food for all fish that do not live strictly vegetarian and look for food in the bottom area, such as catfish and loaches. sera vipachips very quickly become smooth in the water but keep their shape for a long time. The food does not fall apart and keeps its excellent taste, irresistible to the fish. sera vipachips do not cause cloudiness and do not pollute the water. Therefore sera vipachips are also ideal for slow or nocturnal fish for which the food must remain in the water for a longer time. sera food specialties On the following pages we will show you sera foods that, depending on the fish species, are fed as an addition or as a staple diet. The amount of additional food that you add depends on whether a fish eats only plants, only meat or plants and meat. Therefore they eat frequently, but always in small portions. Due to their high activity these fish need energy-rich food with plenty of raw materials. Goldfish require less protein but more easily digestible carbohydrates than tropical fish. Too high protein levels cause fattening and increase water pollution. In case of an inappropriate diet, the intense colors will also fade. sera goldy Color sera goldy sera goldy Royal Flake food for the daily feeding of all goldfish with Spirulina and wheat germ. It consists of 80% special flakes made from marine algae, ground krill and plankton. 20% are FD bloodworms, daphnia and Artemia brine shrimp. 18 Further sera foods also suitable for the nutrition of saltwater fish: sera sera sera sera sera sera FD Krill (page 15) FD Artemia Shrimps (page 14) Plankton Tabs Menu (page 11) Spirulina Tabs (page 12) micron (page 13) microgran (page 13) Healthy through the water – vitamins Also when using high-quality brand food it is useful to additionally support vitamin supply with sera fishtamin and sera activant. Especially stress, e.g. after a transport, or in case of overstocking or inappropriate care conditions (5 neon tetras are not a shoal) increases the vitamin requirements of ornamental fish. Lack of vitamins increases the liability for diseases. Often, small causes such as cleaning the tank or introducing new fish may be sufficient to cause a disease outbreak. sera fishtamin is a liquid multivitamin preparation for strengthening stressed fish, e.g. in case of overstocking, of insufficient shelter, of too frequent maintenance, or of keeping not according to nature • before and after introducing fish into a new aquarium • before and after breeding tries • for enriching the rearing food for growing fish. Young fish have higher vitamin requirements. • for supporting the healing process during and after diseases You can add sera fishtamin directly into the aquarium water. However, it is better to add 6 – 7 drops onto the food once weekly, just before feeding (please see instruction for use). sera activant The tablets contain a combination of numerous vitamins, minerals and trace elements. • for enhancing coloration, vitality and well-being of the fish • for breeding preparations, supports readiness to spawn • prevents deficiencies and helps newly added fish to accommodate Weak or ill fish are directly fed a sera activant tablet. Directly put the tablets into the water to do so. Through the tablet form of sera activant the ingredients stay stable for a long time as light and air will not reach on the vitamins. The active ingredients are released slowly and welldosed. Many fish nibble at the tablets and thus take up vitamins and minerals directly. Tip Coldwater fish are especially vivid and consume plenty of energy. Therefore we recommend to enhance the diet with vitamins. By doing so you can prevent diseases and deficiencies. In any case, goldfish should regularly receive vitamins. 19 How feeding and eating can be fun When and how to feed • Feed small portions, two to three times a day • Feed only as much as your fish can eat within a short time • Distribute the food on the water surface as evenly as possible • Do not feed your fish at all one day a week. Your fish will get rid of waste on these days by actively searching for food. • Feed with a specially reserved spoon. You will always feed the same amount every time. Quality and aroma of the food remain unaffected by this. Something different every now and then Feed a varied diet consisting of 2 – 3 different sera foods from 100 ml or 250 ml cans. In case of monotonous feeding, e.g., one year from the same 1 liter can, fish will lose their vividness, the colors become pale, and the fish may become ill. Vitamins and delicate nutrients are destroyed by light and air every time you open the can. Beware of food in translucent plastic bags: With these, nutrients are destroyed by air and light anyway before the package is opened. How you can recognize the leaders While feeding, it quickly becomes apparent which fish is dominant in the aquarium. The strongest fish get to eat first. Mostly, these are the most colorful and active fish. The fish won’t eat what they don’t know Your ornamental fish are often suspicious when you give them new, unknown food. They check whether no enemy has entered. However, the fish become familiar with the food after a short while. If you have fed too much If after an hour the food is still lying on the aquarium bottom it was too much. • remove remaining food with the sera gravel cleaner • if possible, add fish such as armored catfish (at least 5 specimens of each species) that look for food at the aquarium bottom. 20 It happens only rarely, but is possible: Fish do not have appetite When using natural sera foods you can be sure only to offer the best to your fish. If ever your fish still have no appetite this is often a symptom of a disease. If your fish do not feel well they will frequently hide or stand above the gravel apathetically. The sera guide “How to keep your ornamental fish healthy” informs you about treating the possible causes. Feeding during a holiday You do have someone looking after your fish? This is great, but bears the risk of overfeeding. Fish always appear to be hungry. And people who do not know this tend to overfeed. Prepare a food mix for every day of your absence, possibly in separate portion containers with indicated feeding date on them. Carefully lock away the remaining food! It is best to attach the address and phone number of your specialty retailer to the aquarium glass. With an automatic feeder The serafeed A reliably takes over feeding your aquarium fish. The always hungry appearance of the fish does not make it overfeed. Friends or relatives often overdo it. Depending on how you adjust it, the feeder feeds one to six times daily when you are absent. This is also ideal for young fish that grow faster and more healthy when they receive several small meals a day. sera vipagran is especially well suited for automatic feeders. You’re about to leave for several days, and you do not want to trust people inexperienced in aquarium care, or an automatic feeder, to feed your aquarium fish? sera holiday is an ideal solution in that situation. The high-quality and nutritious sera tablet food remains stable in water for full 7 days and does not decompose. The valuable ingredients in sera holiday are released by and by so the fish can nibble off the food layer by layer. The specialty: sera holiday are free from indigestible fillers such as plaster or lime. They consist of 100% best sera fish food! You take Tip Let the automatic feeder feed already one week before you leave. This makes it easy to check on the food amount and on proper function. 21 Encyclopedia: Vitamins and ingredients Vitamin What use are the specific vitamins? supports visual power and growth. eye damage, bleeding skin Furthermore, it serves as a skin protector and as a fertility vitamin. Irregular movements are a typical symptom growth trouble, loss of appetite, cramps liver fattening, among others Protein Protein-rich food is used for muscle buildup, and is therefore a real power nutrition for every fish. Generally, animal protein is easier and quicker to digest than herbal protein. Fish that mainly feed on meat therefore require only short, straight intestines. Herbivorous fish have long, spirally wound intestines. These differences are taken into account by the sera food research department when developing appropriate types of foods. Pr ot Carbo hydr and fa ates ts Ballast substances are effective against intestinal inertia. This frequently occurs, e.g., if discus fish are fed food low in ballast substances, such as scraped beef heart, for a longer time. Besides lacking ballast substances, that kind of nutrition is much too single-sided and does not meet the natural requirements. en Fish food must have a well-balanced composition of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, trace elements and ballast substances for an appropriate nutrition. The most important ingredients and their important features for your ornamental fish are: le m Trac e e Ingredients n ei Ba lla subs ta st nc es A lack in one vitamin cannot be compensated with an excess of another vitamin. The multivitamin complex of the sera food is therefore compiled especially carefully. ts s ral Mine Minerals such as calcium are indispensable for bone build-up and, accordingly, for healthy growth. Trace elements fulfill different tasks within the body. They are often an indispensable component of enzymes which work as “tools” within the body. The fish require trace elements only in small amounts. Carbohydrates and fats are the most important energy sources for your fish. However, too much fat leads to fattening and organ damages. This unnecessarily abbreviates the lives of your fish. Just as is the case in sera fish food, fat and vitamins must be in the correct ratios to ensure the fish organism can sufficiently burn up the fat. 23 Functioning aquariums from the very beginning Planning your aquarium on the computer With sera – The CD you can design, save and change as many aquariums as you like. sera – The CD checks automatically whether bottom material, fish, plants, stones and wood suit each other, and how many fish of every species you may add. sera – The CD prints a shopping list for you to make sure you get everything according to your desires.
