A Message from the West Potomac Athletic Boosters
WABC would like to congratulate all the spring sport’s student athletes, coaches and volunteers who made the season a big success.
Thank you for all of your hard work!
Our officers for the 2015-2016 school year will be Rick Genuario and Vicki Aardema as acting Co-Presidents. We will both have seniors
and our last children at WPHS so we are actively seeking two individuals to provide their leadership to WABC as Co-Presidents. Diane
Moery will be our VP. Kim Monroe will be our Treasurer, and Kent Myers will be our Secretary.
We would like to thank a number of senior volunteers that have graduated with their students. Kari Panagopoulos has done a fantastic
job with concessions. We will miss Gretchen Walzl in so many volunteer capacities: Swim, Track, ANG, Odyssey of the Mind, and more.
Crystal Compton has been a consistent volunteer for WABC starting with Football, the Pep Rally, Valentine’s Event, Golf and so much
more. We have had such great team reps many of whom have volunteered for multiple sports and events: Lynn and Andrew Cheng,
Carol Bolger, Anastasia Albritton, Elizabeth Holm, Kathy Dolce, Stephanie Manous, and Bill Austin. A special thank you is extended to
Jeanne Atkins for not only being a team rep but also for editing and formatting the seasonal newsletter for the past three years. She
has also done a great job as membership chair. Thank you Jeanne and all of our volunteers who are retiring from high school volunteering. I hope your example has inspired others to continue the great work WABC does in supporting our athletic programs and the
school.
I would also like to thank Graphics teacher and Webmaster Amy Stoll. Amy created the Turf West Potomac Website and enhanced our
Golf Website and provided valuable graphic services to help us promote WPHS. I also want to thank Mark Sentner and Michael
Glatting for their printing and graphic services they continue to provide in creating the Fall Program, Stadium Banners, Golf brochures
and other promotional art work we need throughout the year. A special thank you to Lee Harrington, past president and current WPHS
coach for working in many capacities particularly the Fall and Spring card sales, Christmas and Mulch sales and his due diligence in helping maintain our fields and facilities.
Remember our meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 7 pm in the library. The meetings are open to anyone and we
encourage all team reps, coaches, parents, and students to attend.
The annual WABC Golf Tournament held on June 11th at Laurel Hill Golf Course was a huge success. We had 106 golfers enjoy a dry
but hot day. Due to the generosity of our players and sponsors, we were able to raise more money than the year before which will
help fund necessary improvements for the athletic program. Thank you Joel Sickler and his company, Justice Advocacy Group for generously being the Grand Sponsor.
Look for the 2014-2015 Silver Patron Passes going on sale soon. The deadline for the discount ($155) is August 31st.
Finally, I would like to thank our Co-President, Vicki Aardema for her dedication to WPHS the past four years. We have been fortunate
to have Vicki as Co-President and her willingness to organize many important WABC functions and events. It was a banner year of improvements with two Turf fields, a new brick entrance feature, parking lot Wolverine banners, landscaping along Gunston, fresh
painting, drainage improvements for the softball field, and a Bermuda grass practice field. And we are getting a new track as we speak!

BASEBALL
The varsity finished in 3rd place in the Patriot Conference this year in the regular season but
lost in the first round of the conference tournament. This marked the 5th consecutive winning season for the team and the 1st time in 4 years that we did not qualify for the Regional
Tournament. While this was disappointing, we had some great wins this year including at
least one victory over every Patriot Conference team and outside conference wins over Marshall and Chantilly who each won their conference tournaments.
The varsity team was led this year by an extraordinary group of seniors: Zach Belanger, Zach
Hecker, Rocky Iboleon, Tom Nicholson, Joe Ranney, Sam Snider and Kent Sullivan. They have
each been with the program over the last four years and have been major contributors to our
success.
Although we are graduating a large number of very talented individuals, we will have a number of core players returning as well as a large group of JV players to represent West Potomac
next year. We expect to make another run at the Patriot Conference Championship next season and get back to the Regional Tournament.
This year’s JV team consisted of 14 freshman and five sophomores. Though this dynamic
looks like a recipe for a “rebuilding year,” our JV Wolverines shared great success headed by
the leadership of those five returning sophomores. Our team captains, returning sophomores Chris Day and Patrick Aitken helped teach minute skills in practices, rallied the team
when down in many of the games and stood out as offensive and defensive leaders on the
field. Though led by sophomores, it was the freshman who dominated the lineup card, accounting for six starting positions in any given game.
This year the coaches selected Sophomore Brennan Willmott-McMahon to receive the
Coach’s Award. Brennan was a returning sophomore outfielder who played some games in
the outfield for us last year, having gained a spot through hard work and perseverance.
Though he struggled to begin this season and even sat a couple of games on the bench, Brennan’s spirits were not to be “dashed” (his nickname is dash). Brennan taught himself a skill
that only very few ball players at any level can gain; bunting for a base hit. Brennan made his
way back into the lineup about mid-season and raised his (at the time) abysmal average over
300 points. Though not a voted on captain, Brennan led groups in practice and games, especially when his fellow teammates were playing up at varsity. Though Brennan will be missed
at the JV level next year, we look forward to his continued success with the program and expect great contributions from him.

Lastly, it is important to remember that our players are students first and they have a duty to
their studies as well as their athletic development. This year 19 of our players and managers
achieved a Grade Point Average above 3.5! These students should be commended for their
exceptional dedication to their sport, and their brilliance in the classroom. They are: Patrick

CREW
This year was marked by another great turnout of athletes for crew. Our 73 rowers got two extra
weeks of bonus training in the weight room and on the erg, as we extended the winter conditioning
season to wait for the ice on the river to melt so that we could get out on the water.
Our first two regattas of the season at Sandy Run and Baltimore were both cancelled early in the day
due to high winds. Our first real race took place at Mathews Virginia on April 18th. It was a beautiful
day at Mathews and nearly all of the boats we entered placed in the top three in their events. Our
only other non-Championship race was the Charlie Butt regatta in Georgetown where our Women’s
Junior 4 took 1st, and the Men’s 1st 4, Women’s 2nd 4 and Women’s Junior 8 took second.
The core of the Men’s team consisted of 4 boats, including the 1st 4, Lightweight 8, 1st 8 (plus 4) and
Novice 4. At Championships, all boats had solid races with the Lightweight 8 a close 4th and the 1st
4 coming in 3rd in the Petite Finals. The Women’s team boats that competed at States included the
1st 4 (went to Petite Finals), 2nd 4 (5th overall), Junior 8 plus 2 (5th overall) and the Junior 4, who
came in 1st and earned the title of State Champions! This boat, with Rachael Brautigam, Rachel Hardison, Liz Brodie, Juliette Burcham and Natalie Lorca, went on to make the semi-finals at the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia and compete in the Scholastic Rowing Association Nationals competition in Camden NJ, where they placed 7th overall, representing West Potomac with pride and distinction once again.
Special kudos to our graduating rowers! Four-year rowers include Men’s Captain Grant Ours, Wendell Vago, Jesse Willis (rowing at Clemson next year), Lilly Lane (rowing at Loyola), Taylor Haas, Hannah Engle, Student President Sabrina Bishop and Samantha Murphy. Other seniors are Women’s
Captain Rachel Perez, Sagar Patel, Kyle Chittal, Tyler Hovey and Claude DeLamater-Brotherton.

BOYS LACROSSE
The West Potomac Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse Team finished with 4 wins on the year and remained competitive
through adversity. The Boys Varsity team narrowly missed a return trip to regionals with an 8-6 defeat to
Lake Braddock in the Regional Playoff. The team was led by their 12 seniors who provided leadership and stability to the Boys’ Lacrosse Program for the last four seasons. With 10 freshmen participating on the Varsity
squad in 2015, the future is definitely bright for West Potomac Lacrosse

BOYS JV LACROSSE
The West Potomac Boy’s Junior Varsity Lacrosse team finished the season with a record of 6 wins and 5 losses. The team’s philosophy of 100% at all times drove it to new heights during the season. After a timid display in the scrimmage against Westfield the team regrouped and found its strength. The opening win against
Fairfax illustrated that the defense and the team as a whole were ready for a season of dominant displays.
The team shutout both Lee and Annandale, while holding Mount Vernon to 4 goals, and Marshall to 2. The
team’s mental toughness and fighting spirit were on full display in the close losses to Mclean, Woodson, and
West Springfield by a margin of 2 goals. The highlight of the season was the team effort to reduce penalty
minutes during games, averaging less than 2 minutes of man down play a game. The group of young men
that comprise this team are true competitors.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Girls' Varsity had a successful season with 10 wins and 8 losses. We challenged ourselves
with a tough schedule this year and hope to build on that experience for next season. The
team put in some great work this season and it didn't go unnoticed. We had several AllConference honors. Sarah Gallagher, Maxine Clifford and Theresa Willmot-McMahon were
given honorable mentions. Second team honors were earned by Madison Smith, Chloe Harris, Claire Barber. Lizzie Wood, Martha Gallagher and Zshana Lee earned first team honors.
We had three players go on to earn All-Conference honors - Lizzie Wood and Martha Gallagher with honorable mentions and Zshana Lee made first team. Most importantly, our
team excelled in the classroom! 92% of our girls earned a 3.5 GPA or higher this season.
Girls JV Lacrosse had a successful season with 6 wins and 5 loses. The JV team started the
season with the largest roster in many years, counting 27 participants compared to a normal
size in recent years of 17. Of those, 9 girls were new to the sport having never played on an
organized lacrosse team before. The season is notable for the tremendous improvement in
skill level and teamwork by all members.

The Team started out the Spring 2015 season with 96 very talented soccer players trying out
for 24 varsity positions and 25 JV Positions. Snow covered the two new turf fields for the majority of tryouts and the first scrimmage extending tryouts an extra week and into the first
scrimmage. The new coaching staff: Head Coach Ahmad Sasso, Assistant Jay Ruelas and Assistant David Heller knew that the season was going to be a very challenging season and were
up for the task.
West Potomac was one game under par during the regular soccer season and went into the
District Tournament seeded fourth. The Wolverines defeated West Springfield High School 32 in a close game to earn a spot into the regional round. West Potomac then traveled to the
number one seed Lake Braddock High School to take on the Bruins. The team played well and
pulled off a win after playing 80 minutes of regular time, four overtime periods and winning
the shootout 5-3. Edgar Waitt had a terrific save during the shootout to ensure a Wolverine
victory.
The Wolverines then took the bus ride over to take on a very strong WT Woodson HS team.
The majority of soccer fanatics that filled the Woodson stadium were wearing wolverine blue,
loud and spirited. Late in the second half Nelson Flores scored an upper ninety goal and the
stingy defense protected the goal for the next twenty minutes and the Patriot District Championship. This was the first district soccer championship in school history for the World’s
Greatest High School. The following week the Wolverines played a strong McLean team and
lost their regional game 2-1 in a close match.
The JV Squad coached by Jay Ruelas and David Heller had a very productive year. The talented
team lead by captains Nate Cermak, Cooper Hanson, Kevin Aviles and Gabo Caicedo finished
the season with 8 wins, 4 loses and 2 ties. The players and coaching staff are looking forward
to a promising 2016 spring season.
Accolades were in abundance for this talented, young team. Nelson Flores earned a spot on
the 6A First All Region Team. Bright Somuah made the 6A Second Team Roster. Patriot Conference District award winners were, First Team Sophomore Nelson Flores and Junior Bright
Somuah. Second Team Patriot District Team Honors went to Freshman Paul Bangura and Senior James McNulla. Patriot Conference Honorable Mention went to Fernando Acosta, Ivan
Hernandez and Kevin Garcia. WPHS Sportsman Award was given to Senior Nick Cucinotta.
Honorable Mention for Team Sports went to Nelson Flores. Nelson Flores also won the Most
Valuable Player in soccer certificate. The WPHS Boys Soccer Team Coaches Award went to
James McNulla. The JV Coaches Award was given to Cooper Hanson. The boys soccer teams
had players that earned Spring Scholar Awards with 3.5+ GPA Fernando Acosta, Vaughn Bassett, Nick Cucinotta, Ben Slobodin, Kevin Aguilar, Dominick Heratsch, Brendan Kosar, Luke
Lash, Christopher Letai, Eric Romero and Sean Sullivan. Finally, Coach Ahmad Sasso was honored by his peers with the WPHS Coach of the Year award.

The 2015 Girls’ Soccer team completed one of their best overall seasons in years!!
The Patriot District is one of the toughest soccer leagues in all of Virginia; the Wolverines had
seven players from the girls varsity team recognized as All-Stars!!

The regular season overall record for the West Potomac Varsity team was 6-6-1.
Girls JV Soccer
First year coach, Peirce Chandler led a determined and skilled group of student-athletes. The
West Potomac Girls JV Soccer team had a great year. We started off strong with a win against
rival Mount Vernon. We continued our strong effort throughout the season finishing with
seven wins, three ties, and three losses. The girls played well throughout the year and improved in many facets of the game. The girls worked extremely hard during practices on defensive technique and moving as a team. The results of this hard work were apparent in the
games as the year progressed. We finished the year on a three game winning streak and
capped the season off with a victory over another rival in T.C. Williams. Our Goalkeeper Claire
Callahan had a great year improving leaps and bounds from the beginning of the season, and
her effort was rewarded with this year’s Coach’s Award.
The overall record for the West Potomac JV team was 7-3-2.

SOFTBALL
On behalf of the West Potomac Softball program we would like to thank Mr. Case for supporting all our athletes. We would also like to thank Aaron Helmick, Barb Mahoney, and Chris Beal for their support behind the
scene to make our season a successful one. Also, a big thank you to all the parents, faculty, custodial staff,
and students who came out to watch our games-- it really makes a difference when you are in the stands!
Our Varsity season opened in celebration of the remembrance of Hannah Graham against Mount Vernon
with a resounding victory-- and we never looked back. We finished tied for 2nd place in the Patriot Conference with defending State Champions South County with a 9-3 record and behind Lake Braddock. Both rivals
were ranked in the Washington Post top 10 all season. We advanced to the Regional Tournament for the 6th
straight season and lost to McLean who finished first in the Liberty Conference and also ranked in the top 10
by the Post.
We won 14 games overall this season scoring 159 runs while leaving 136 on base. Our defense was outstanding compiling a team fielding percentage of .922.
Several players were recognized in the Patriot Conference, more than any other softball team including:

a full course load and 5 AP classes.
We also had two players recognized by the Fort Hunt Community and Fairfax County.
Torie Bolger was awarded the Fort Hunt Sportsmen’s Bob Beatty Award given to one individual for athleticism, sportsmanship, and community Service.
Jayne Orleans was honored with the prestigious Donna De Verona, Spirit of Sport Award given to one senior,
amongst 25 high schools in Fairfax County, who manifests a never give up attitude, is a leader on and off the
field, and displays behavior that is consistent with the ideals of ethical conduct in athletics.

BOYS TENNIS
The Boys Team finished 11-2 in the conference and 12-2 over all defeating Robinson (a Region
semifinalist) 7-2. 1st team All-Region honors went to Aiden Kiernan and Joe Leonard at #3
doubles. The Team lost to Langley (likely State winner) by literally 2 points 1st Team AllConference honors went to Aiden Kiernan #4 singles, Scott Liner #5 singles, and Jordon
Tenenbaum undefeated at #6 singles during the season. Aiden Kiernan and Joe Leonard were
#3 doubles All-Conference for their undefeated season at #3 doubles. Michael Ruamthong
was 2nd team All-Conference at the #1 singles position. Michael Ruamthong was team MVP,
Scott Liner won the Coaches Award, and Chris Cheng won the Sportsman of the Year Award.

GIRLS TENNIS
The Girl’s 2015 Tennis Team was blessed with healthy returning players who were eager and
ready for the season. We also welcomed new freshman faces that help round out our varsity
line up. 14 girls in all – whom worked hard, improved tremendously and had lots of fun doing
so.
Our team came in 4th in the Patriot Conference with a record of 8-5. Our competition was
evenly matched with teams like Lake Braddock and West Springfield who at the end narrowly
beat us out of contention for the Regional Team Tournament. The girls did an outstanding job
this season. Freshman Sarah Ames brought home two awards this season 1st Team All District – for Singles on line 6 and 2nd Team All-District in Doubles with her partner, Molly Cabral. Our Senior and Captain, Claire Sedlak received a 2nd Team All District Award in Singles
at line 2. Along with her doubles partner, Mia Elsheikh, Claire finished up her high school tennis season by making it to the semi-finals in the Patriot Conference Tournament.
This year’s Most Valuable Player Award was given to freshman, Sarah Ames and the Coach’s
Award was given to senior, captain, Claire Sedlak.

SPRING TRACK
This spring has been a very successful season for Wolverine Track and Field. They hit the
ground running while qualifying with regional and state times from the first meet of the season and never looked back. This year’s team was led by senior captains Jessika Dickerson,
Maura Finn, Cullen O’Boyle, Nick McCobb, Glenn Rushing and Kenny McClusky. These remarkable athletes created a welcoming and fun atmosphere for our new freshman to our seniors
that wanted to give track a try before they graduated!
This year’s patriot conference championship was successful for West Potomac, the boys
4x400 relay (Lozie Goolsby, Cory Jones, Glenn Rushing and Cullen O’Boyle) took first place by
smoking their competition of Lake Braddock and T.C. Williams. Senior and first year thrower
Zach Sadler was conference champion in Shot Put and runner up in boys Discus. Nick McCobb
rounded out the 300m hurdles finishing second in the conference while sophomore Zach
Lindsey finished 5th in the 3200m. Lozie Goolsby scored points for the Wolverines by finishing
in the top 6th for boys high jump, 200 and 400m while Chris Mitchual took all-conference
honors in the boy’s shot put.
Robinson Secondary is where the competition continued for regionals. Lone female,
Maura Finn represented the school in the 3200m and Glenn Rushing advanced to states by
not only hitting the automatic qualifying time in the 400m but by also placing 6th. The 4x800
relay (Matt Frame, Zach Lindsey, Cullen O’Boyle and Lozie Goolsby) secured their spot for
states by running a season best time while senior Lozie Goolsby set the West Potomac school
record in the 800m with a time of 1.55.15 giving him 2nd in the region.
With states having just concluded in Newport News, yet again our boys 4x400 looked stronger
than ever improving their all-state honors with a 5th place finish and Lozie Goolsby earning all
-state in the 800m, both leaving their mark on the track at Todd Stadium. The Wolverine
track program would like to thank everyone who contributed to our success this season, especially our team representatives Lisa Finn and Sue O’Boyle.
