Vocabulary development is a critical
component in your child’s ability to
interact with the world around them.
Here are 8 more ways to build your
child’s vocabulary:
1. Create language-rich environments
to encourage new vocabulary. This
might include a trip to a museum, a craft
or a book. You can increase you child’s
vocabulary through fun, memorable
experiences.
2. Use kid-friendly terms to explain
new words.
3. Encourage your child to brainstorm
their own examples of new
vocabulary words. For example, if the
new word is “enormous”, you might
encourage your child by saying “Can
you think of an enormous animal?”
4. Practice sorting new vocabulary.
Encourage your child to describe, sort
and categorize vocabulary based on
various features. For example, you could
say, “think of 3 cold things, 3 animals, or
3 things that take you places.”
5. Think of synonyms and antonyms.
Encourage your child to think of
substitute words. For example, ask your
child, “Can you think of another word for
delighted?” He could add, “overjoyed!”
Or talk about opposite words, “What is
the opposite of rude?” He might say,
“friendly.”
6. Give your child opportunities to
practice new vocabulary words.
7. Introduce new vocabulary words
ahead of time. Plan a fun craft that
incorporates new words. You might
make Play-Doh shapes using vocabulary
words, draw new words with sidewalk
chalk, or search for words in books,
magazines or newspapers.
8. Teach strategies to remember new
vocabulary. Your child might create a
“vocabulary flashcard box” that includes
challenging words from chapter books,
words they are learning in school, or new
concepts encountered in their
environment. Encourage your child to
define vocabulary in their own words,
and draw a picture as a representation.

una "caja de tarjetas de vocabulario"
que incluye palabras de retas de libros
de capítulos, palabras que aprende en la
escuela, o conceptos nuevos de su
