NON-PROFIT US POSTAGE PAID DUBLIN, OH PERMIT #723 ANNUAL REPORT / 2011 LEARN BECAUSE EVERY CHILD DESERVES The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is America’s only nonprofit public charity dedicated exclusively to finding permanent homes for the 107,000 children in foster care waiting to be adopted. We are driven by Dave’s vision: Do what’s best for the child. In our unwavering pursuit of this goal, we provide free educational resources about foster care adoption, promote awareness, assist policymakers and employers, and support adoption professionals and agencies throughout the U.S. and Canada. All to ensure that every child finds a forever home. Groundbreaking evaluation shows Wendy’s Wonderful Kids works for waiting children. For too many of the 107,000 children waiting in foster care to be adopted, the wait ends when they age out of the system — when they’re left to navigate life and its challenges without the support of permanent, loving families. Last year, that was nearly 30,000 children. That’s why we created Wendy’s Wonderful Kids. Through this program, we award grants to public and private adoption agencies to hire adoption professionals who implement a proactive, child-focused recruitment model. This model is targeted exclusively on moving America’s longest-waiting children from foster care into adoptive families. Currently, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters average 13 adoptions each week. In 2011, a rigorous five-year evaluation by Washington, D.C.based Child Trends revealed that our greatest hope had proven true: WENDY’S WONDERFUL KIDS WORKS. The research proved that: Children served by the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program are 1.7 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE ADOPTED than children served by “business as usual.” Children with mental health disorders and children over 15 are 3 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BE ADOPTED VISION EVERY CHILD WILL HAVE A PERMANENT HOME AND A LOVING FAMILY. MISSION THE FOUNDATION WILL DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ADOPTIONS OF WAITING CHILDREN FROM NORTH AMERICA’S FOSTER CARE SYSTEMS. than those not served by the program. The program works because recruiters DILIGENTLY SEARCH for adoptive families. The program works because recruiters THOUGHTFULLY PREPARE THE CHILDREN for adoption. The program works because recruiters establish ONE-ON-ONE RELATIONSHIPS with children. Read more about the evaluation results and download free materials about Wendy’s Wonderful Kids at DAVETHOMASFOUNDATION.ORG LEARN I AM NOT UNADOPTABLE. I AM A WENDY’S WONDERFUL KID. ADOPTED AT 12 AND 14 ADOPTED AT 11, 8, 7, 3, AND 2 At 5 and 7, brothers Andrew and Andre were separated from their siblings and placed in foster care. They faced more heartbreak when they were removed from their first foster home because their caretaker was using drugs. Through a diligent search, a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter located a woman named Bernice who had attended the boys’ church years before. Bernice returned the recruiter’s call in tears — saying she had no idea what had happened to the boys. Without a second thought, Bernice adopted Andrew and Andre and welcomed them into a strong community of church, fellowship, and friends. Removed from their home for safety reasons, these siblings had spent most of their lives in foster care. Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters knew they had an important job: searching for someone who would adopt all five children, and preparing them for adoption. In the end, it was one of Dana’s teachers who adopted the children and answered Tyree’s question, “Will this be the family I live with forever, like until I have gray hair?” The teacher and her husband bought and renovated a foreclosed sixbedroom house, took adoption classes, completed their home study, and brought the five siblings home. ADOPTED AT 13 ADOPTED AT 15 Ian went into foster care as an infant. Twice during his time in foster care, he was almost adopted, but both adoptions fell through. With an intimate understanding of Ian’s difficult case, a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter found the name of an adult cousin, and then worked tirelessly to get enough information about the cousin to contact him. After contact was made, the recruiter coached Ian’s cousin through training specifically designed to help Ian with the challenges he faced due to his chaotic childhood. Finally, Ian was adopted at age 13 — forever freed from the worry that he would age out of foster care without a family to call his own. Kayla was 6 when she entered foster care. Her father had died three years before, her mother was no longer in her life, and she didn’t know any of her paternal relatives. Over the next nine years, Kayla moved from one foster home to the next — until a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiter got involved. The recruiter scoured records looking for mentions of kin, but none was found. Then she located Kayla’s father’s obituary and contacted the relatives mentioned in it. Soon, Kayla was reintroduced to her half-sister, aunt, and great-aunt, who had all kept Kayla’s baby pictures in hope of one day reconnecting with her. Now adopted by her great-aunt, Kayla is excelling in school and thriving as part of a large, loving, extended family. DONATE 2012 marks 20 years since Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas established the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Today the women of his family are speaking out and getting involved to ensure the legacy of a husband, father, and grandfather will live on for generations to come. OUR PARTNERS MAKE IT POSSIBLE. LORRAINE THOMAS Lorraine is a mother of five, grandmother of 17, and passionate supporter of her late husband’s Foundation. She remembers when the Foundation was just an idea in Dave’s head, and looks back with pride at how much the organization has accomplished in the two decades since. “Every time a child in foster care is given a loving, permanent home, we fulfill Dave’s greatest wish,” says Lorraine. “But there are so many kids out there still waiting to be adopted. That’s how we know we have to keep pushing forward.” “Dave wholeheartedly believed that children in foster care are our shared responsibility,” she says. “There are a lot of great causes out there. But these children are everyone’s cause. They just need love and a home. And anyone can provide that.” Lorraine now keeps Dave’s spirit and influence alive as a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Every year, generous businesses, organizations, and individuals band together to host events, raise funds, and increase awareness for the Foundation. We are incredibly grateful to the Thomas family and each and every person who made an effort to advance our work in 2011. WENDY (THOMAS) MORSE Wendy was 8 when her dad opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Today the company’s namesake is a partner in the Thomas 5, a Wendy’s franchise operating more than 30 restaurants in Ohio. She also serves on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, championing the cause through fundraising and speaking engagements. “My father instilled in me not just a love for the business, but also a love for kids and doing the right thing,” Wendy says. The Thomas 5 provides support by participating in DTFA Kickball, fundraising campaigns that support the Foundation, and by raising awareness about foster care adoption in their restaurants. They also invite all customers to drop change into Foundation canisters. “We want Wendy’s customers to know they can make a difference,” says Wendy. “A few cents goes a long way.” Individuals, businesses, and organizations can: • MAKE A DONATION • HOST A SPECIAL EVENT • OFFER PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS MCKENZIE MORSE Daughter of Wendy and granddaughter of Lorraine, McKenzie is a 19-year-old, thirdgeneration advocate for the Foundation. She recently made a major contribution by hosting the first DTFA Kickball for a Home fundraiser in 2011. “I was volunteering in the Foundation office when we started talking about this kickball idea,” McKenzie remembers. “Not long after, I decided to do the kickball tournament as my high school senior project. My grandpa did some really great things — and I think he’d be proud of this event,” McKenzie says. “I’m just really glad to be able to help kids in foster care find homes.” Since McKenzie left for college, DTFA Kickball for a Home has blossomed into a grassroots fundraising campaign. People across North America are hosting DTFA Kickball events to help the Foundation create even more forever families. As for what Dave would think about kickball, McKenzie answers with a smile, “I think he’d have a blast. He’d make a great coach.” • OFFER MATCHING GIFTS • HOST A DTFA KICKBALL FOR A HOME TOURNAMENT • CONSIDER THE FOUNDATION IN WILLS AND TRUSTS Learn more by calling 1.800.ASK.DTFA THANK YOU. Two words. Beyond releasing groundbreaking research that is changing how people view and approach foster care adoption, we made important strides in achieving our number one goal: finding a forever family for every waiting child. WE EMPOWERED ADVOCATES. WE RECOGNIZED COMMITMENT. WE CELEBRATED SUCCESS. WE INCREASED AWARENESS. In May of 2011, we brought more than 240 Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters and their supervisors to Columbus, Ohio, for a two-day summit. They learned about new strategies for doing what they do best: solve problems, make connections, and increase adoptions. Joshua DuBois, Executive Director for the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, shared an inspiring message, while national adoption experts facilitated intensive training workshops. In the fall of 2011, we released the 100 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces list, bringing national attention to the importance and value of offering adoption benefits to employees. Among the acknowledged workplaces were major brands including The Wendy’s Company, Delta Air Lines, FedEx Corporation, Gap Inc., Google, and Hanes Brands. Millions of Americans tuned in once again to hear joyful stories of foster care adoption success as the 13th annual A Home for the Holidays aired on CBS in December of 2011. This collaborative effort of Wendy’s, Children’s Action Network, Triage Productions, CBS, and the Foundation resulted in 6.7 million people witnessing the incredible impact of foster care adoption. 2011 was a year of sharing. We shared our story through a total brand refresh, making all communications — from our website to toolkits — friendlier and more intuitive. We shared adoption information, including more than 113,000 free educational resources and downloads. We shared connections by growing our social media presence on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. And we shared new, simple opportunities for our supporters to make a difference through mobile giving. See QR code on back page. A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO ADOPTION WE PUSHED FOR FINALIZATIONS. WE STOOD IN THE SPOTLIGHT. WE KICKED THINGS UP A NOTCH. On November 19, 2011, a coalition of advocates, including the Foundation, Alliance for Children’s Rights, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Children’s Action Network, and Freddie Mac Foundation, led the 12th annual National Adoption Day in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. In preparation for this day, we partnered with celebrity spokesperson and adoptive parent Willie Garson to encourage judges to bring adoption finalizations to the top of their to-do lists. The result? The cumulative number of adoptions from this 12-year effort topped 40,000. Many national media outlets provided exposure for the Foundation in 2011, including the Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Washington Post, and Yahoo News. To achieve this press and more, we engaged in a year-long effort to position the Foundation as the foremost thought leader and expert in foster care adoption. Kickball for a Home, a grassroots fundraiser first hosted in 2011 by Dave Thomas’ granddaughter, McKenzie Morse, has since been transformed into an organized fundraising program anyone can host, anywhere. You can order a free program kit online, gather a group of friends or coworkers, pitch in a donation, and play ball. Contact us for more information about foster care adoption.
