SULC STUDENT PHOTOGRAPH DIRECTORY
Welcome to new and returning law students for the 2015-2016 academic year.
During the 2015 Entering Student Orientation this fall, I introduced the class motto: “From
Enrollment to Employment,” disclosing to the incoming law students that we want you to
succeed as professionals. The incoming students are from 18 states and Canada; and from
63 colleges/universities. The highest GPA is 3.96 and the highest LSAT score is 165. The
average age is 28. The male/female ratio is 44.2/55.8 percent. The diversity is 55.36 percent
African American; 32.59 percent Caucasian; and 12.05 percent other.
We at the Southern University Law Center are committed to producing lawyer-leaders. We
are very excited about the prospects of what all our students will accomplish during your time
with us. Additionally, we look forward to the outstanding contributions you will make to the
profession and community as a whole, when you join the ranks of our nearly 4,000 alumni
throughout the state, nation, and world.
Seventy years ago on January 10, 1946, Charles J. Hatfield III wrote a letter seeking
admission to the only state institution offering a law degree program at that time. Although
he was academically qualified, Hatfield was denied admission because of his race. That
courageous act and letter was the catalyst for the establishment of Southern University Law
Center.
As we observe “2016 as the Year of Charles J. Hatfield III,” we want to share the history of this
institution and why we are proud to be an institution of access and opportunity and salute our
top rankings in diversity.
Lastly, I encourage you to get to know your classmates and fellow future alums for they will
become an invaluable network of friends and colleagues that you will cherish for a lifetime.

MISSION
The mission and tradition of the Law Center is to provide access and opportunity to a diverse group
of students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to obtain a high quality legal education with special emphasis on the Louisiana civil law. Additionally, our mission is to
train a cadre of lawyers equipped with the skills necessary for the practice of law and for positions
of leadership in society.
