We listened intently and heard the Spirit of God speaking of the need for a new era of unity. Everyone we talked to seemed hungry for combining forces for the purposes of mission. Tragically, though we are more connected by communication technology than ever before in the history of the church, we are further apart in our willingness to work together. In years past, the local church was the primary sending, financing and praying force in world missions. In just 35 years that has changed significantly. Entrepreneurial initiative within the kingdom of God has become the norm. Tens of thousands of new ministry non-profits have proliferated. The churches no longer have the “gate-keeper” role in the expenditure of mission’s dollars. Everyone has direct access to the Christian donor community through the internet. The result is a high level of competition for funding that pushes us apart when we should be pulling together. This year’s MissionFest is focused on the compelling need for all of us who care about the Harvest to work together. The New Testament calls us the Body of Christ, made up of a huge variety of members. According to the Holy Spirit’s plan each member exists to serve the others in harmony. Oneness is God’s idea of how best to finish the dream of Jesus and disciple every nation. The free market system may be the working platform for capitalism but it’s not the Biblical design for the church. Democracy and rugged individualism may be the basis of our American Republic, but independent initiative is not the healthiest way to accomplish our Savior’s mission. Without a doubt, we are better together… better when we lock arms for efficiency and effectiveness because the time is short and the needs of the world still vast. Let’s resist the urge to “do our own thing” for Jesus, no matter how well intended. Instead let’s do His world-embracing mission together. Imagine the power of churches combining energy with other churches and para-church agencies in a renewed surge of holy partnership. It’s not only possible, it is necessary! Thank you for joining us this year. It is our fervent prayer that you will be enriched and empowered in your personal mission as we work together for the Glory of our Loving Lord. Attention youth leaders – you may want to encourage the youth to come prepared to participate in the Christmas Shoebox project for MFS this year! For questions and to volunteer, contact [email protected]. Shoebox Mission Project Don’t you love the sparkle in a child’s eyes on Christmas? But many children never experience Christmas – they don’t even know about the Christ of Christmas. If you would love to give a child a once in a lifetime Christmas sparkle experience, you’ll love our mission project for this year – it’s Operation Christmas Child – shoeboxes for children who otherwise wouldn’t get a gift. These shoeboxes go all over the world. Just take a shoebox (or buy a plastic shoe box), put some hygiene items in (toothbrush & paste, soap, etc.), some school items (pens, etc.) and a toy. Pick the gender and age child you wish to bless and mark it clearly on top. (ages 2-4, 5-9, 10-14). Wrap the box top separately so it can be easily removed. Note: no glass, no war toys, no liquids. Please use only new items. Include $7 with each box to help cover shipping and a Bible picture book each child is given in their language. This is an outreach sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse, and checks can be made out to them. Bring your completed box with you to Missions Fest Seattle, and we’ll deliver it to the nearest pick-up terminal. Email us at [email protected] with questions. [5] FLOOR PLAN [6] FLOOR PLAN [7] Keynote speaker Josh Mcdowell Evangelist and Apologist (International Speaker, Author and Humanitarian) A trailblazer for truth and relationships, Josh McDowell has been at the forefront of cultural trends and ground-breaking ministry for five decades. Early in life, Josh considered himself an agnostic, believing that Christianity was worthless. While being challenged to intellectually examine the claims of Christianity, Josh discovered compelling and overwhelming evidence for the reliability of the Christian faith. After believing in Jesus Christ, Josh’s life changed dramatically as he experienced the power of God’s love. His plans for pursuing law changed to an education in theology. Fuller Seminary was his next stop. During his world speaking tours, Josh realized that where young people were sick, homeless, and hungry, words alone were insufficient. He organized aid programs to back up his Christian testimony. He’s the only non-Russian to receive the Russian Academy of Medicine’s honorary degree and the only foreign member of the prestigious Russian Club of Scientists. Josh shares the essentials of the Christian faith in everyday language so that youth, families, churches, leaders and individuals of all ages are prepared for the life of faith and the work of the ministry. This included leveraging resources based on years of experiences, new technologies and strategic partnerships. Since 1961, Josh has delivered more than 24,000 talks to over ten million young people and their families in 125 countries. He is the author or co-author of 127 books, including More Than A Carpenter and New Evidence That Demands a Verdict, recognized by World Magazine as one of the twentieth century’s top 40 books. Josh’s books are available in 88 different languages. Josh and Dottie are quick to acknowledge that after their love for the Lord, family is their greatest joy and top priority. They have been married for over 40 years, have four wonderful children and eight beloved grandchildren. Josh McDowell Ministry is a division of Cru, (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). Josh McDowell [8] Keynote speaker Linda Smith Shared Hope International, President and Founder Linda is a leader in the global movement to end sex trafficking of women and children around the world and the US. In 1998, while a member of U.S. Congress (1994-98), Linda traveled to Falkland Road, Mumbai, India—one of the worst brothel districts in the world. The hopeless faces of desperate women and children forced into prostitution compelled Linda to established SHI to support, shelter and service sex trafficking survivors using a comprehensive model for restoration. By partnering with local organizations, SHI provides restorative care, shelter, education and job skills training through the Women’s Investment Network (WIN) at Homes and Villages of Hope where women and children live. SHI provides leadership in education, training, prevention strategies, research, and policy initiatives. Linda founded the War Against Trafficking Alliance (WATA) in 2001, coordinating regional and international efforts necessary to combat sex trafficking. In 2003, WATA co-sponsored the World Summit with the U.S. Department of State, uniting leaders from 114 nations that demonstrated sustained commitment to protect the vulnerable from the sex trade. Six international summits followed, leading governments in under-achieving nations to pass human trafficking laws and plan for enforcement. In 2009, Linda presented the findings to Congress. In 2011, she commissioned a landmark initiative to assess every state’s laws as they relate to or impact domestic minor sex trafficking (Protected Innocence Initiative). She also designed an integrated training and awareness model, Do You Know Lacy? Besides appearing on CNN, MSNBC, USA Today, Dan Rather Reports, ABC News, the Dr. Phil show, O’Reilly Factor, and CBN, she has authored numerous articles and received many awards. Linda’s political career began as a Washington State House Representative, then a State Senator and ended as an elected “write-in” Member of the US Congress. Linda and her husband, Vern, reside in Vancouver, Washington and are proud parents of two and grandparents of six. LINDA SMITH [9] Keynote speaker DJ Vick Eastside Foursquare Church, Lead Pastor DJ Vick began his journey at Eastside Foursquare Church in 2000 and was installed as Lead Pastor in June of 2011. The church has a strong history of dynamic local and global outreach, and under DJ’s leadership, this passionate and generous commitment to missions continues, by God’s grace, to grow! DJ has a Bachelor’s Degree in Pastoral Ministry from Corban College and a Master’s Degree in Theological Studies with an emphasis in Church Planting from Bakke Graduate University. He has lead or been part of foreign mission teams which have traveled to Jamaica, Honduras, and the Philippines. He also led the small group ministry of the church for years and has a passion to help people discover their calling through connecting in community. DJ’s been married to Jenny since August 2000. They have three children; Makayla, Hana, & Eli. His favorite colors are royal blue and orange, and his hobbies include basketball, racquetball and reading. DJ Vick Better Together by Missions Fest Seattle Conference Chair Pastor Jan Hettinga The global mission of Jesus is always about finding and joining partners in order to better accomplish the task: - Churches combining forces with other churches - Church and para-church teams - Financial partners who share resources - Churches, para-church agencies and committed individuals supporting and serving one another as we do in Missions Fest Seattle - Alliances of people, churches and agencies who are focused on an unreached people group or a specific area of need like Justice ministries - Interest groups that join forces to reach children, teens or college students There are some things that can be done by individuals or separate churches or agencies. But, most missionary work is best done by groups who are all pulling in the same direction. [ 10 ] Keynote speaker James Davidson James Davidson is a pseudonym because his ministry is in a closed country, and we do not want to expose him to any risk. When James was eighteen years old, God gave him a passion to see King Jesus worshipped with white-hot intensity from all corners of the earth. After two years of study at Boston University, James took a leave of absence and led a church-planting team to a war-torn country in the Middle East from 2009-2010 when he was twenty years old. His team lived among a broken people, learned the language and culture, and began sharing their lives and the treasure of Jesus Christ. In just one year, James’ team saw God work in incredible ways among the local Muslim people, as disciples were made who began making other disciples. He met his lovely wife who was on the team, and they have enjoyed marriage for over two years now. Now, at twenty-four years old, while James is on his way back to the Middle East, he currently works in mobilization and loves to speak, teach, and talk about God’s global purposes. Over the past three years, James, a gifted and dynamic speaker, has taught thousands in fifteen different states nationwide at various conferences, church events, and Perspectives on the World Christian Movement classes. He is most qualified to teach on topics relating to God’s heart for the world and sharing the Gospel cross-culturally. James and his wife, Amanda, currently live in Washington and are planning to return to the Middle East in early 2014 to lead a long-term church-planting team and start a non-profit organization that will work among an oppressed people. In his spare time, James enjoys playing volleyball, experiencing other cultures and writing on various issues relating to the Christian life. James is the author of The Big Picture, an eight-lesson bible study on God’s global purposes, which was published in September 2013. James Davidson [ 11 ] MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT Walter Jespersen turned 100 on March 12, 2013. A celebration was held with a hundred of his closest family and friends. At one end of the room there was a DVD which ran for 10 minutes, depicting his early years on the mission field in China with China Inland Mission (CIM). In 1951, he and his wife Helen had to leave after the Communists took over. They endured many trials, including house arrest. From a publication: “In the fall of 1950 the first public execution was held. One member from each family was required to attend and observe. Both neighbors on either side of the Walter Jespersen Jespersens were eventually taken out and shot because of their involvement in the previous regime. Walter was so grateful that he had the opportunity to share the Gospel with one of the men.” Returning to North America, Walter was a leader with the CIM (later called Overseas Missionary Fellowship or OMF). He also served in various capacities later in life, including pastoring, counseling, Bible teaching, and continued as a prayer warrior. Helen went “home” in 1987. Walter has five children, all serving the Lord. Walter went to be with the Lord July 15, 2013. Ernie Klassen was born October 18, 1918, #6 of 12 children to pioneer settlers in Saskatchewan, Canada. When Ernie was 6 years old, he raised his hand in church, indicating he wanted to be saved. No one seemed to notice, and life went on. When he was 16 a close cousin dropped dead of a heart attack. That was his wake-up call, and he knelt by his bed to confess his sin and be born again. Immediately his thought was, “If God saved me and I’m on my way to Heaven, I need to tell others.” But he was so shy that if company showed up for dinner, he’d rather miss the meal and stay in the barn! God was at work, however, and he handed out his first tract – and ran for fear the person would ask him a question! Ernie Klassen He was baptized in a creek, while his teenaged friends looked on and mocked. He attended a small Bible School and then pastored until WW II. After military service and college, he taught at the New Brunswick Bible Institute. In 1955 the family sailed to Germany to help start a Bible School. In 1959, they started a second school, which has grown to become the largest in Europe. Many graduates go into the mission field. Ernie never knew retirement – he’s been active since leaving Germany, witnessing whenever/wherever he has a chance. He’s on his way to Heaven, and he wants to take along as many as possible. [ 12 ] MISSIONARY SPOTLIGHT Joe & Betty McLennan Joe and Betty McLennan began their married life in 1958 committing themselves to serving the Lord in foreign missions. They served as missionaries to Brazil for nearly 20 years with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF). Joe served as pilot/mechanic and minister of the Gospel of Christ witnessing of his faith to those who came in contact with him. Betty served as support for Joe and their daughters while providing hospitality to fellow missionaries, pastors, teachers, medical personnel and other travelers passing through the MAF bases where they lived. She gave strong testimony of constant reliance on God to meet the challenges of daily living in a foreign land. The McLennan family returned to the U.S. in 1976, and settled in the Everett, WA area where they could assist Betty’s aging parents and care for the education of their four daughters. At Alderwood Community Church Joe served as Elder and Missions Pastor, and serves currently as Adult Sunday School teacher. Betty served as Church Secretary and choir member, and currently is the coordinator for a women’s cancer support group. They enthusiastically and humbly meet the challenges of serving, always trusting God for the outcome. Over fifty-five years later, they still live by the hymn writer’s phrase: “Give of Your Best to the Master.” They continue in their faithfulness to serving our Lord, each other and others! In 2005, Joe agreed to Chair Missions Fest Seattle in its start-up days, and each year since was asked to maintain that position...we let him finally retire after last year’s missions conference. Doug and Margaret Nichols have served in missions for over 43 years, of which 20 years were in the Philippines. They presently reside in Seattle, where Doug serves as ACTION Founder and Global Missions Advocate/Mobilizer as an advocate for needy pastors, the poor, children in crisis (100 million street children, and 159 million orphans worldwide). Doug travels extensively worldwide speaking on behalf of the gospel and the glory of God in missions. Margaret travels in ministry with Doug when possible and is involved in speaking, teaching and disciplining. Margaret and Doug have two children, Robby and Julie, and four grandchildren, David Joseph (DJ), Gabriele (Ellie), Douglas (Dougie) and Patrick (Patch). Doug & Margaret Nichols Today, ACTION serves in 26 countries with 267 missionaries. They are trusting that people attending this conference will be energized and inspired to better understand Christ’s Great Commission to His church. Their hope is that you will take back to your home church ideas and examples that you have learned and are able to apply both locally and globally. If your home church is not presently one of the Sponsoring Churches of Missions Fest, we encourage your congregation to become involved in this exciting effort. For more info, please contact us at: Missions Fest Seattle P.O. BOX 33813 SEATTLE, WA 98133 missionsfestseattle.org acknowledgements This is our eighth area-wide missions conference, for which we praise God. We are so very appreciative for the warm reception which Eastside Foursquare Church has extended to Missions Fest Seattle. This is a major undertaking. A special thanks goes to Pastor Brandon Brazee who has been the liaison between Eastside Foursquare Church and Missions Fest Seattle. Likewise, our thanks go to Northshore Baptist Church for opening up their facilities, both for our all-day Friday Pastor/Lay Leader Partnering Workshop and for hosting our Youth Program. MFS’s inaugural fall conference was held at Northshore in 2006, which gave us a great foundation for these succeeding years. To Lead Pastor D.J. Vick and Global Outreach Pastor Brazee, (at Eastside Foursquare Church), Pastor of Global Missions Hilario Pardo and Senior Pastor Jonathan Alexander, (at Northshore Baptist Church), we say “thank you” for being a great witness both locally and globally. We honor you and your ministries. Missions Fest Seattle has been a success due to many contributing factors. To our sponsoring congregations, all who attend this no-cost gathering are most grateful. To those organizations hosting exhibit booths and sponsoring ads in this magazine, much thanks. We also deeply appreciate our Keynote Speakers and Seminar leaders, as well as our conference volunteers. There is an organizing Missions Fest Seattle (MFS) Leadership Team and an Executive Committee which meets monthly to plan and organize this outreach. They make up the sub-committees listed below. Thanks to each and every one for all your prayers, time and efforts.
