500 MAIN Winter 2016 Newsletter HOT OFF THE PRESS: Recent Works from Flatbed December 12, 2015 to February 28, 2016 Opening Reception: Friday, December 18, 6 - 8 p.m. Texas is privileged to be the home of Flatbed Press in Austin – a worldrenowned printing atelier and publishing workshop that has produced extraordinary, limited editions of original etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and monoprints for over 25 years. Hot off the Press features over 40 prints by 12 emerging and established artists that have worked with Flatbed Press to print and publish their artistic visions over the past few years. Artists include Ricky Armendariz, Alice Leora Briggs, Veronica Ceci, John Robert Craft, Suzi Davidoff, Sandra Fernandez, Annalise Natasha Gratovich, Jules Buck Jones, Sharon Kopriva, Linda Ridgway, Frank X. Tolbert2 and Joan Winter. The artwork in this exhibition showcases a range of techniques, styles and subjects, demonstrating the facility and aesthetic bravura of Flatbed’s stable of artists, owners and master printers. Fine art printmaking is a historical art process with origins tracing to central Europe in the 1400s; present day Sharon Kopriva, Witching Hour, 2015, monotype, 23 1/2 x 17 1/2 in., loan courtesy of the artist and methods, like those in this exhibition, Flatbed Press show the evolution of the process in relation to contemporary movements and technical advancements, achieving a heightened sense of fresh, artistic originality. This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by the Edaren Foundation, Kim and Roy Steinhagen, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Art Works and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation. JOURNEY FROM WITHIN: Ceramics by Linnis Blanton December 12, 2015 to February 28, 2016 Opening Reception: Friday, December 18, 6 - 8 p.m. Linnis Blanton, southeast Texas native and adjunct instructor of ceramics at Lamar University, Beaumont, is recognized throughout the region for his ceramic masterpieces. Inspired by organic and figurative elements of the natural world, as well as ancient Anasazi culture and his travels in the southwest, this exhibition features over thirty ceramic vessels and plates ranging in size, color and visual texture. The artwork in this exhibition was created over the past few years, and visualizes Blanton’s artistic journey as he expands his creative boundaries and ventures into new territories with his medium. While some of the artwork in this exhibition appears to be traditional ceramic vessels, upon closer inspection subtle transitions in the artist’s application of glaze and transitions in surface texture open the viewer’s eyes to another world, where surrealistic figures and shifting patterns dance with great bravura across Blanton’s ceramic landscapes. This is a cohesive exhibition that achieves a synergistic energy due to Blanton’s skillful mastery of forms, mass, color and texture, heightened by his Linnis Blanton, Gnome, Gnome, Where is the Gnome? intrinsic understanding of light and how II, thrown and altered stoneware clay, 22 1/2 x 9 1/2 contours and contrasts achieve visual x 9 1/2 in., loan courtesy of the artist elegance. Journey from Within, long overdue, is Blanton’s first solo exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. The works invite viewers to revel in the sensual nature and aesthetic beauty of clay and to delve into a deeper understanding of Blanton’s artistic journey. This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by the Edaren Foundation, Colleen and Bob Burns, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation. Café Arts SKIN CONDITION: Ceramics by Kelly Costlow November 5, 2015 to January 24, 2016 Kelly Costlow is an emerging artist from Batson, Texas, who graduated from Lamar University, Beaumont in May of 2015, with a BFA in Fine Arts and an emphasis on ceramics. While at Lamar, Costlow studied with noted Southeast Texas artist Linnis Blanton, who is featured in a solo exhibition at AMSET in the Steinhagen Gallery on view December 12, 2015 through February 28, 2016. Costlow is inspired by the natural world and is a nature enthusiast – she loves spending time outdoors. This passion is demonstrated in her sculpture, which depicts anthropomorphic figures that shift subtly from animal to human forms. Clay is an attractive medium to the young artist due to its malleable nature, allowing Costlow to mold, shape and shift forms as she Kelly Costlow, It’s in the Bones, 2015, clay, raku creates her sculptures. Costlow’s pieces have a certain seductive and surreal quality, and when fired, 7 x 8 x 5 in., loan courtesy of the artist viewing them it is easy to find yourself waking up in her world, where female figures morph into birds and lizards stand tall and walk instead of crawl. Costlow’s effortless facility in her medium is evidenced in the intricate details in her figures and bold colors produced in the raku firing process. She has created a fantastical world where reality and dreams converge. AMSET is honored to present Costlow’s ceramics in our Café Arts series. Birds in Art March 12, 2016 to June 5, 2016 Opening Reception: Friday, March 18, 6 - 8 p.m. Debbie Stevens, On the Mark, 2014, oil on canvas, 34 & 3/8 x 58 & 3/4 Birds in Art is an annual juried exhibition organized by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wisconsin. This exhibition of approximately 50 contemporary paintings and works on paper and 10 sculptures will include a variety of avian themes and habitats from a selection of international artists. It will also coincide with birding season in Southeast Texas. In April and May, Southeast Texas boasts one of the largest migratory fly zones in the United States, drawing birders from all over the world. This exhibition will attract both art enthusiasts and birders, and includes a full color printed catalogue. This exhibition is generously funded, in part, by the Edaren Foundation, Sheila and Jerry Reese, Karen and Michael Fuljenz in Honor of Lynn P. Castle, the Beaumont CVB, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts, an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, Art Works and the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Foundation. Permanent Collection Spotlight Mary McCleary, I Fled Him Down the Days and Down the Nights, 2000, mixed media collage on paper, 45 x 70 1/2 in. Mary McCleary is a Nacogdoches artist who taught at Stephen F. Austin for 30 years. She is known for elaborate, three dimensional narrative collages made from layers of paper, rag board, foil, glitter, sticks, wire, mirrors, nails, glass, string, leather and small tiny toys. McCleary was Houston Art League's Texas Artist of the Year in 2011. Her collections include: Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas; El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas; San Antonio Museum of Art, San Antonio, Texas. I Fled Him Down the Days and Down the Nights is a modern day depiction of the Biblical story of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. She used friends and fellow artists, Ann Stautberg and Frank X. Tolbert, dressed in contemporary clothing as her models. In the upper right corner of the composition, McCleary makes reference to Masaccio’s fresco depicting Adam and Eve being expelled from the Garden of Eden, c. 1424-27, located in the Brancacci Chapel inside the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, Italy. The title comes from the poem The Hound of Heaven by Francis Thompson (1859-1907). McCleary incorporated poetry and Biblical themes as sources of inspiration for her work. One work of art will typically take six months to a year to complete. A Five-Year Vintage Affair Returns to Chateau St. Arte de AMSET January 29, 2016 It’s time for that special love affair again. Kids of all ages and their parents had fun frosting cookies, making pipe cleaner ladders, greeting cards, spin art ornaments, and writing personal letters to Santa. The Post Office operated their giant mailbox to receive letters from Santa and to ensure their speedy delivery to the North Pole. This year’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting was made special by all of the participating museums and organizations including the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Fire Museum of Texas, Texas Energy Museum, Edison Museum, Southeast Texas Arts Council, Tyrrell Library, Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau, McFaddin-Ward House Museum, Clifton Steamboat Museum, the Beaumont Children’s Museum, Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, Beaumont Main Street and the Dishman Museum. Special thanks to the City of Beaumont, Mobil Federal Credit Union and Flint Hills Resources for their sponsorship. Gingerbread Workshop 2015 Icing, gingerbread, white chocolate, candy canes, orange slices, gum drops, mints… f it sounds like AMSET has grown a sweet tooth, we have! We held our bi-annual Gingerbread House Workshop on Saturday, December 6th. To fill popular demand, a second workshop was held on Saturday, December, 12th. Paige Neyland of Michaels Arts & Craft Store in Beaumont led these tasty gingerbread adventures. The Gingerbread House Workshop participants displayed their holiday spirit by rolling up their sleeves and creating a gingerbread masterpiece. AMSET did permit finger licking, as if we could have stopped it! Protégé 2016 Competition and Exhibition In its 30th year, the Protégé Competition and Exhibition was created specifically to encourage graduating high school seniors to begin taking the steps necessary to become part of the world of art. This year's Protégé juror is Michael Kennaugh. Born in Casper, Wyoming, artist Michael Kennaugh currently lives and works in Houston. He moved to Southeast Texas in 1965, graduated from Lamar University with his BFA in 1986 and from the University of North Texas in Denton with his MFA in 1990. Known for his large, painterly abstract canvases, Kennaugh’s arabesque forms sweep across the plane. Kennaugh further develops his compositions with decisive and layered applications of grisaille tones and color hues, yielding a physically invigorating and dynamic creation. Kennaugh’s solo exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (Sept. 25 – Nov. 29, 2015) Locus In Quo, featured works on canvas, as well as drawings and sculptures. This competition allows students to begin learning about the evaluation processes used in the art world. Prizes for winners include scholarships to Lamar University's Art Department and gift certificates for art supplies. Requirements and materials required for entries can be found at www.amset.org. If you know a budding young artist, counsel him or her to prepare to enter this school year’s Annual Protégé Competition and Exhibition. Entries will be accepted from January 5 - 20, 2016 and he or she may enter any work created after August 2015; he/she need not be part of an organized art class to enter. Join us to see what great works of art this year’s students have created at the 2016 Protégé Reception and Awards Ceremony on February 25, 2016 from 6 - 7:30pm. The Protégé Exhibition will be on display in the Conn Take pArt Gallery until March 20, 2016. Fun in the Mud! Family Arts Day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, February 20, 2016 This fun day will be about fun in the mud clay mud, that is! In conjunction with the Linnis Blanton ceramics exhibit, we will be creating various types of sculpture with clay. There will be demonstrations in wheel throwing and firing. Of course, visitors will be encouraged to make their own clay vessels by experimenting with various techniques such as coils, slabs, textured stamps and pinch pots. As always, face painting and refreshments will round out this free event. Volunteer Spotlight: Xenia Fedorchenko Xenia Fedorchenko, Lamar University Associate Professor of Printmaking, is an extraordinary volunteer. Despite her demanding schedule, Xenia agreed to chair AMSET’s first-ever fundraiser The Monster Mash…an AMSET Bash on October 23. As Chair, Xenia managed to enlist a whole new battalion of volunteers to assist with this event. She oversaw the live printing of T-shirts by the Print Council student organization of Lamar University, as well as printed give-aways authored by the Graphics Novels Honors Class at Lamar. She was also able to recruit artist Maurice Abelman, who designed and donated the Monster Mash logo design. In addition, she spent an entire weekend in her home hand printing the logo on the front of every one of 125 t-shirts prior to the event. Not only has Xenia been a wonderful volunteer to AMSET, she has dedicated her life to creating art and promoting the creation of art in our area. Aside from her teaching responsibilities, she has widespread connections with artists all over the world and regularly opens her home to them while they are on international tours. In November, she hosted a group of 16 Estonian performance artists lead by the Estonian group Non Grata and included Helios Circuit from Oklahoma and Wild Torus from New York City while they performed in Beaumont as part of their North American tour. The week before that, she hosted a group of Finnish artists, two who were graphic novel/comic artists, Pertii Jarla and Emmi Valve, as well as one printmaker, Janika Herlevi. All three presented artist talks on campus. We are grateful to Xenia for successfully chairing The Monster Mash fundraiser while continuing to provide creative vision in Southeast Texas. A Letter From the Director Mary Jane Garth In Loving Memory AMSET recently lost a great patron of the arts. Mary Jane Garth passed away on November 18, 2015 at the age of 87 after a lengthy illness. She was a huge supporter of AMSET having served on the Board of Trustees and generously donating to exhibitions, the gala and the acquisitions fund. Mary Jane loved contemporary art and actively collected art her entire life. She always said that great art should reflect the times in which we live. She also strongly believed that this museum should attempt to acquire a work of art by every artist represented in solo exhibitions at the museum. Mary Jane was a well-loved woman, bigger than life, who touched the lives of so many in our community. All art lovers learned so much from her and her strong passion for the arts was contagious. Mary Jane never minced words. There was never a hidden agenda. These attributes combined with a person who was very generous, adventuresome and fun loving created a one of a kind, remarkable woman - Mary Jane Garth. If you didn't know Mary Jane, perhaps you know her daughter-in-law, LeeAnn, and son, Terry, or daughter, Harriet. Terry was the president of the Board of Trustees from 2014-2015 and is also very generous with his resources to AMSET. Please join me in making a contribution in Mary Jane Garth’s honor to AMSET to purchase a work of art in her memory. Sincerely, Lynn P. Castle AMSET Executive Director AMSET Donors 2015 This Donor list reflects contributions made to AMSET for the year preceding November 30, 2015.
