Some may return to Surrey Downs next year however at this stage we are still waiting on approval for several of our positions. Until we know for sure who is returning we would like to say thank you to the following staff who have worked productively to support learning outcomes of our students. Thanks to Heidi Mebberson, Mel Davies, Tamar Williams, Karen Meddle, Janet Jones, Jane Dickie, Amy Wallace, Sue Wilson, Cynthia Didcote, Maria Barrientos, Kylie Faul and Noelene Frappell. We appreciate your work and dedication to the Surrey Downs community. A special thank you and farewell must go to Pam Peek. Pam has decided to retire and move onto the next relaxing stage of her life. We thank Pam for her many years of valuable service to Surrey Downs, and the Education Department, and we wish her all the very best for the future. Friday 13th December 2013 Also taking some extended time away from Surrey Downs is Di Scott. Di will be on a leadership exchange in Canada for all of 2014 and will be working at a school called Berkshire Park Elementary. We will welcome Jean Sveinson, from Canada, who will be our Assistant Principal for 2014. I look forward to the opportunity to work with a leader from another education system. I am sure we will have many new ideas to share with each other. 2013 classes We have finalised how we expect our 2014 classes to start and students visited their 2014 class today so they could see their new teacher and classmates. They will also have a slip with this information with their report. Staff have worked very hard to ensure all children are placed in the location that best supports their learning. At times over a Christmas break we have a change in enrolments that may affect the classes we have planned. If any changes have to occur to our original plans we will let families know at the first opportunity in the new year. I want to wish all our staff, students and families a wonderful Christmas break. Take the time to be with family and friends and to be good to yourself. Cathy McAuley ☺ Merry Xmas & Safe Holidays Year 7 Graduation Year 7 Graduation Hello Surrey Downs I am so excited to be lucky enough to be coming to your school out of all the Primary schools in Australia! I wonder how many there are? 1000? 10,000? 20,000? Maybe someone could find that and let me know when I get there! I could then use you as an Australian Math Consultant. I sure hope you like Math; I am a Science nut. I just love Science. I also love good jokes, reading, cooking, poetry, art, wildlife, and meteor showers. I love the time of the morning when there is complete silence and then right after, just before the sun comes up, when the birdsong begins. Have you ever been up that early? Thank you for your letters! Some of you mentioned that sometimes you can see a koala near your school. Ms. Scott told me that her daughter and her recently saw a kangaroo hopping by their house. Ms. Scott will be living in my house when she is in Canada. She may see a family of raccoons, a blue heron, an eagle or even a coyote by our house or in our backyard. Today was the first school day that we had snow. Many of the students in my school have never seen snow before. It was very strange and wonderful for them. I am coming to South Australia for one year with my husband (who loves motorcycles and who will come to read to you once in a while at the school) and my 16 year old son Michael. He will be in Year 11 at Golden Grove. My older son Danny is 20 years old and will be staying in Canada while we are in Australia. He is a musician and works in a music store. We would love him to come visit us in Australia. If he does, I would love you to meet him. I will miss him! Our school goes for Christmas Break Dec. 20. Zealand before arriving in Australia. We will leave Dec. 27 for Hawaii and New I can't wait to meet you all!! Ms. Scott is so very proud of you! She says you are wonderful. I got some of your artwork and letters today and I think she is right! Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a great Christmas Break! See you in January! Mrs. Jean Sveinson Principal M.J.
