People called it ‘the grandaddy of reality TV’ because it influenced so many other shows. The programme makers hid cameras and played jokes on members of the public. Some people didn’t like the idea of this secret filming! a b FR EE 2 Soon after this, talent shows became popular. The first was Ted Mack and the Original Amateur Hour. It invited people onto the show. They weren’t professionals. They sang, danced or told jokes. It was a success and soon there were more talent shows competing for an audience. 3 In 1954 a US television channel broadcast the first Miss America competition. The winner became a national celebrity and everyone understood that appearing on television was a great way to become famous. 4 c Seven up! was a British programme. It came out in 1964. It was part reality show, part documentary. The programme makers chose a group of twelve seven-year-olds. They asked the children questions and filmed them doing everyday things. Every seven years they went to visit the same people and reported on the changes in their lives. d SA M PL E 5 In 1989 the series COPS became an instant success in the USA. The series followed a group of policemen doing their job. It was exciting for the public to see things that they didn’t see in their normal lives. gLossary influence(v)–wpływaćnakogoś audience–publiczność,telewidzowie broadcast(v)–transmitować,nadawać(program) celebrity–sławnaosoba instant–natychmiastowy,błyskawiczny 6 In 1999 Big Brother appeared – first in the Netherlands and then in countries all around the world. E 4 Culture FR EE in Europe Amir Kumar is a Bollywood actor and dancer who travels around, bringing the best of Bollywood dance and music to theatres and festivals across Europe. We met him in Barcelona and asked him a few questions. Did you know …? ◆ India’sfilmindustryiscalledBollywood fromthewordsBombay+Hollywood. ◆ Bollywoodmakesabout1,000films everyyear–that’smorethanHollywood! SA M PL E ◆ Bollywoodfilmsareusuallylovestories, comediesoractionfilms. When did you start dancing? Well, I started acting when I was ten years old. I had classes with a famous Bollywood dancer. When I was seventeen I got my first professional job, dancing in a film. It was like winning a prize! I was very lucky. Where did you live in India? I was born in Mumbai. It had an important film industry and I saw lots of famous actors and dancers; including Aishwarya Rai – the most beautiful woman in the world! It was an exciting experience for a young boy. How many films did you make in Mumbai? Oh, a lot! I participated in more than forty films! I acted and danced in about twenty films and then I discovered that I was a good choreographer so I invented steps for other dancers. Why did you decide to come to Europe? A theatre company in Spain invited me to dance at a festival. It was a wonderful opportunity for me. At first I came for a month but then I got more offers of work, so I stayed. Do you miss India? Sometimes, yes. I miss the food and the music most, but Europe is my second home now. I am a very lucky man. gLossary filmindustry–przemysłfilmowy including–włączając participate–braćudział discover–odkryć invent–wynaleźć opportunity–okazja 1.48 Readandlisten.Tellyourfriend inPolishwhatthetextisabout.
