Today many American Jews celebrate Hannukah with the same gusto as their
gentile neighbors celebrate Christmas. It is a time of giving and receiving,
marking the beginning of the end of the secular year, in this case an entire
millennium. Yet in the traditional Jewish calendar the Festival of Lights was
considered a minor holiday without rampant commercialism and the secular
connotations that come with gifts. In an Ashkenazi prayer book, printed in
the United States in 1848, the Hannukah celebration was not yet a parallel to
Christmas, although the practice of lighting the menorah was common.
Indeed, throughout much of the nineteenth century American Jews tended to
neglect the Festival of Lights - a fact noted even by Christian newspapers.
Yet already by the 1920' s, Christians were referring to Hannukah as the
"Jewish Christmas," while Jews celebrated the holiday not only by lighting
the menorah but by giving gifts, all in the shadow of a developing consumer
culture.
Like so many aspects of Jewish religious practice, the transformation of
Hannukah was linked to the growth of United States Jewry within its unique
environment. Interestingly, we can even see signs of Americanization in the
changing eating habits of various Jewish communities. Jews traditionally eat
latkes on Hannukah, served with applesauce and sour cream. Yet, in late
nineteenth century Vermont, Jews ate their latkes with maple syrup, while
during the same era in California, a dish of potato pancakes was served with
goat cheese!
The elevation of Hannukah to a major holiday was the result of Jews
acculturating themselves to an America that was overwhelmingly Christian in
population and symbols. During the renowned Pittsburgh Rabbinical
Conference of 1885, Kaufmann Kohler (1843-1926), a leader of the Reform
movement, spoke of the importance of dressing up Hannukah to compete
with Christmas. In part, this advice was a reaction to Christian missionary
activities, which attempted to lure Jewish children to Christmas celebrations
with the promise of material rewards.
By the 1920's, Hannukah had become an important holiday among American
Jews. Yet it would be incorrect to regard this holiday as a mere imitation of
Christmas with an emphasis on the exchange of presents. Rather, American
Jews use this time as a celebration of family - reinforcing Jewish identity in
a country whose population may be overwhelmingly Christian, but in which
we feel at home. Hannukah, therefore, is a means for us to feel a kinship with
our neighbors, while simultaneously asserting our Jewish distinctiveness. A
happy holiday to you all.

Seven of us will be going to the U.A.H.C. Biennial in Orlando this month.
We hope to return loaded with information and materials by which we can
continue to make Rodef Sholom your synagogue for the next millennium.
In 2000 we will be concentrating on Membership, Outreach, and Youth,
while not ignoring the other needs of the Temple, including the promotion
of educational and social events for all ages and enhanced religious
services.
We have excellent ties with the U.A.H.C. Judy Lichtig and Marilyn Bennett
of the Northeast Lakes region of U.A.H.C., centered in Cleveland, came to
our last Board meeting to hear of our accomplishments and needs, and
provided superb feedback. The U .A.H.C. has the resources to help us with
all Temple matters, thus making our annual dues to the Union well worth
the cost.
I have been asked to inform members that Tod Cemetery charges
substantial add-on fees for funerals that take place on Sundays, or weekdays
after 3 p.m., at times more than doubling the base fee.
Our membership continues to grow. New members receive free
membership in Sisterhood and Brotherhood. If you know of any new Jewish
families in the area, please call the Temple office.
Our Outreach Committee is newly formed, under the leadership of Jodie
Damioli, chair. The committee will be extending an open hand of friendship
to non-Jewish spouses and relatives of Temple members. In addition,
without proselytizing, we do invite any non-Jewish person:s interested in
converting to Judaism to contact the Rabbi.
Is your 6th, 7th, or 8th grader in the Temple Youth group? It's the best thing
going! Call Marcee Anderson, our Program Director, for more information.
Incidentally, the Rabbi is now forming a Youth choir (first concert for M.L.
King Day) and we encourage our children's participation.
In accord with the stem mandate of our movement's leader, Rabbi Eric
Yoffie, your Board has been assiduously studying Jewish texts and
discussing them at our meetings in order to heighten Jewish awareness and
spirituality. Our latest book is "Jewish Humor, What the Best Jewish Jokes
Say about the Jews", by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin. (A Jewish woman is
wheeling her grandson in a baby carriage. Another woman stops her. "What
a beautiful baby," she says. "Ah, this is nothing! You should see his
pictures! ")
HELP US REACH OUT TO
PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS!
If you know anyone who is currently unaffiliated and who might like
to learn more about Rodef Sholom, please call or e-mail Barb Clouse
(759-0141; [email protected]). With your help, we can grow
stronger in the coming millennium.

A wonderful opportunity for our youth.
A chance to sing and enjoy being Jewish
at the same time. We are looking for
children in the congregation who would
like to be part of a youth choir that will
perform at special events in the
community and sing at our popular
family services. Rehearsals will be
reasonable, the fun and enjoyment
superb. . We will begin preparing
immediately for our debut performance
at the community-wide Martin Luther
King Interfaith Service on January 16.
Rabbi Muller and Jim Johnson will be
leading the group, named The Junior
Chai-Tones. If your child would be
interested, call the Rabbi as soon as
possible.

65th UAHC Beinnial
Our congregation will be well represented at the upcoming UAHC
Biennial Convention in Orlando, FL. Along with Rabbi Muller, Emil
Dickstein, Stuart Strasfeld, Alan Kretzer, Amy Hendricks, Leonard
Spiegel and Joy Elder will be among 5,000 delegates who will convene
in Disneyworld Wednesday through Sunday, December 15-19, for the
Reform movement's largest gathering of all time.
The five day convention includes the announcement of major initiatives
for the 21 st century by President, Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, more than 160
workshops on all aspects of synagogue life, major addresses by political,
religious, and international leaders, the opportunity to worship in a wide
variety of styles, late-night song fests, and study with leading scholars.
Concurrent with the UAHC's Biennial, the Women of Reform Judaism
will hold its 42nd Assembly.
The best thing about a UAHC biennial is the direct impact it has on the
congregations themselves. When temple leaders volunteer their time and
energy to attend a UARC Biennial they return with renewed vision and
fresh ideas to implement in their respective houses of worship. We are
grateful to Emil, Stuart, Alan, Amy, Leonard and Joy for commitment
and dedication to Rodef Sholom.

Happy Hannukah! Our holiday Tot Shabbat is planned for December 4 at 10:00 a.m. The morning will be filled
with songs, prayers, and a special story. All tots, parents and grandparents are invited.
The Congregational LifelBrotherhood Hannukah Pot Luck Dinner is Sunday, December 5 at 6:00 p.m. For your
entertainment, we will have the "Golden Age Follies" singers and dancers, who were recently featured on the front
page of the Youngstown Vindicator. This club was formed in 1990 and has grown from a cast of 9 to 26 members.
They have been performing at wedding anniversaries, parties and hospitals around the area. They are terrific. But
that's not all. There will also be magicians to entertain both young and old as they perform "Table-top" magic. If
that wasn't enough, a songfest of feline lyrics to familiar Hannukah tunes will be led by the famous "Katzwoman."
Don't forget to bring your menorah for a family lighting ceremony.
Our upcoming event for Friday , January 21 is a TuBishvat Seder sponsored by the Congregational Life Cominittee.
TuBishvat, the "New Year of the Trees" was celebrated by the 16th century Jews in the form of a seder, similar to
Passover. They prepared a fifteen course meal, each course including a food connected with the land. The service
included passages from the Bible, the Talmud and the mystical Zohar. Today we celebrate by eating fruits and nuts
that grow in Israel - oranges, figs, grapes, dates, carobs, pomegranates, almonds and more. In between each course
we drink fruit juice instead of wine. It is also a tradition to plant trees in Israel through the Jewish National Fund.
Tree certificates are purchased to honor or memorialize a loved one.
We are preparing a new project and would like to request that anyone who has an e-mail address, please forward it
to [email protected] We would like to compile an electronic directory and thus notify our congregants of
upcoming events and meetings via e-mail. Thank you in advance for your interest.

Brotherhood
We expect another big crowd at the Annual Hannukah Dinner on Sunday, December 5th at 6:00 p.m. Brotherhood
members will be doing the "dirty work", staffing the kitchen, setting the tables, and cleaning up. We are so glad
that the Congregational Life Committee has once again taken responsibility for the entertainment this year
featuring "The Golden Age Follies", magicians and a children's chorus. It promises to be a fun evening for
everyone.
Brotherhood invites all Temple members ·to an important service January 28, 2000 when we reintroduce the
Jewish Chautauqua Society (JCS) to the congregation. JCS is the interfaith educational arm of Brotherhood.
Founded in 1893 and based on the belief that prejudice is bred from ignorance born of stereotypes, JCS was
created to spread knowledge about Judaism to non-Jews.
A JCS representative will speak at the service January 28th about JCS programs that are of growing importance
today, when hate groups are spreading "disinformation" about Judaism. The goal of JCS is "Understanding
Through Education". Please attend this service January 28th and gain a personal understanding of the JCS
mission and how we can all help.
