Following immediately after Sukkot, Simchat Torah brings the fall holidays
to a close. Marking the culmination of the cycle of weekly Torah readings
and their beginning again from Genesis, it is celebrated with a joyousness
that exceeds that of any other holiday in the Jewish calendar.
In the Bible, Sukkot, the major harvest festival, is the holiday marked for
special joy. "And you shall be altogether joyous," says the Torah regarding
this festival. Understandably, for our ancestors, when the crops were in and
there was assurance of food for the months ahead, it was natural to express
one's feelings in thanksgiving and joyous celebration. "They who sow in
tears shall reap in joy." says the psalmist.
But why the joy on Simchat Torah? It does not celebrate any historical
event, nor is it in any way associated with the bounty of nature. It is not a
continuation of Sukkot. Neither the sukkah nor the etrog and lulav have a
place in its observance. It is not even mentioned in the Torah. As a matter
of fact, it did not come into being until the Middle Ages.
Yet, as the years went by the people took Simchat Torah to their hearts and
invested it with a special feeling shared by few other observances in Jewish
life. The answer is simple. There is such a thing as gratitude for the
blessings of nature. Not to take God's bounty for granted but to rejoice in
God's goodness - that is a basic quality of the thoughtful person. But an
even higher quality of a civilized person is the ability to recognize and
appreciate the bounty of the spirit. This is what Simchat Torah represents.

BERTRAM DE SOUZA
Wednesday, October 20
6:00 p.m.
Ultimately, it is in the spiritual insights of our faith and our way of life that
the essential nature of Judaism is to be found. Simchat Torah celebrates this
fact. . It is altogether fitting that we demonstrate our appreciation of this
remarkable quality of our heritage by letting our joy be unconfined at this
happy time of rejoicing with the Torah . .
NEW AND 50 YEAR
MEMBERSHABBAT
Friday, October 29
Service - 6:00 p.m.
Dinner - 6:45 p.m.
This year we will be doing something very special. We will unroll the Torah
Scroll around the entire sanctuary for all to see and hold. It will be unlike
anything you have experienced before. Since the Torah is the possession of
the whole Jewish people, what better way to rejoice than to have all of us
hold the Torah as one big community. I hope to see as many of you as
possible for our special celebration of Simchat Torah.
My View from the Bilnah
E171il S. Dickstein
The Rodef Sholom Sanctuary Fund to replace the chairs and carpet in the
Sanctuary is well under way. We have received $15,000 from the estate
of the late Ben Gould, may his memory be for a blessing. We have-also
received $5,000 from Sisterhood. The estimated cost of the necessary
renovation is $50,000. Are there any donors out there willing to help us
reach our goal? All donors will be recognized.
Our "College Connection" program is off the ground under the leadership
of Bonnie Grossman, Sherry McKelvey and Fran Rothenberg. Be sure the
Temple office is aware of your college student's address.
Our membership is slowly growing. If you know of any new Jewish
people in town or of any unaffiliated Jews ready for us please inform the
office.
The SCRIP program is now history. Thanks to the superlative efforts of
Marilyn Oyer and Barbara Clouse, we have sold out our entire remaining
stock of SCRIP and have decided not to pursue this any more. Thanks to
all who participated.
Our guest speaker on October 15th, Barbara Ribakove Gordon, is a musthear event for Temple members. Please come out to support your Temple
for our very first Social Action Shabbat. We would appreciate a large
.turnout.
The Chai-Tones can use more male voices. Please call the Rabbi if you
have a yen to sing. Our musical programs are uniformly successful.
Remember, there is always a lot to be thankful for, if you take the time to
look. For example, as I'm writing this I'm thinking how wonderful it is
that wrinkles don't hurt. Have a good month!

Marc'ee Anderson, Program Director
This month is full of terrific activities for all ages. October 10th is the
Kick-Off Event for our Junior Youth Group. We'll enjoy a pizza lunch in
the Elaine Lester Youth Lounge at 12:15 p.m. after Sunday School, then
caravan to Lanterman's Cornfield Maze in Canfield for a fun and active
afternoon. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. There will be
pumpkins and t-shirts for sale after we complete the maze. If any parents
are available to help drive, please give me a call at the Temple. This
would be greatly appreciated! On October 16th, we will celebrate
Shabbat at our 1st fall Tot Shabbat. The morning will be filled with
songs, prayers and a special art project. All tots, parents and grandparents
are invited. We look forward to meeting our new tots and welcoming
back our returning group.
With so much going on this month at our Temple, why not place at least
ONE event on your family calendar. Make some time to be with your
congregational family!
?
Cantor & Pinky Ehrlich and Pauline
Berkowitz would like to thank the
many congregants for the cards,
uniongrams and New Year greetings.
They were greatly appreciated.
The Rabbi and the Office Staff would

High Holiday Service Participants
After many months of planning and preparation, the High Holy Days of 5760 are now merely a pleasant memory.
Our busy calendar year in the Temple forges ahead, requiring ever a look forward in preparation for the next event
or holiday. Yet it is important to give recognition and convey our appreciation to those who helped to make our
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services the truly inspirational occasions they were. Many Temple members
answered the call to participate in this year's services, and we would like to warmly thank them for adding to the
overall quality and vibrancy of the holy days.
For Erev Rosh Hashanah, we thank Geri Muller and the Executive Committee-Emil Dickstein, Stuart Strasfeld,
Alan Kretzer and Elliot Legow. We are grateful to Dr. Ronald Roth for his excellent message to the congregation
from the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and to Rabbi Ted Levy who offered a moving closing prayer and
. benediction. On Rosh Hashanah morning the following individuals participated: Jackie Abrams, Claudia Axelson,
Arlene Brewster, Judy Brown, Fran and Mendel Harmon, Richard Shapiro and Steven SheakoskL Special mention ·
must be made of the outstanding job of blowing the shofar done by Hal Brewster, and the beautiful chanting of the
Haftarah portion and blessings by Erin Rocchio.
Many thanks to the members of the Chai-Tones, our volunteer choir, who for the third consecutive year enriched the
quality of the musical offerings on Rosh Hashanah morning. Their collaboration with Cantor Marie Betcher added
much to the service. The Chai-Tones are: Marcy Cohen, Suzyn Schwebel Epstein, Louise Lefkort, Christine
Legow, Rachel Malowitz, Ellen KJeinerman Rocchio, Harry Schagrin, Jr. and Frances Sieman.

the Torah scrolls during the Kol Nidre prayer.
Our services throughout the day on Yom Kippur were enriched by Karen Abrams, Dorothy Baroff, Barbara Clouse,

Sheldon Persky, Jane and David Pollack, Jan Pratt, Sally and Ernst Rose, Donn Rosenblum, Harry Schagrin, Jr.,

of the past year's Bar and Bat Mitzvahs did on reading from the Torah: Richard Baroff, Janna Fisher and Julie
Mallen. Special thanks to Rhoda Mostov and Elliot Legow for chanting the Haftarah blessings, in the morning and
afternoon respectively.
Todah Rabbah to the following youth who led the Children's Family Services: Max Altman, Ryan Baroff, Leandra
Cohen, Jamie DamioIi, Sara Heal, Ian Levison, Lisa Mallen, Jason Newman, Aaron Pollack, Rebecca Rosenblum,
Lia Sheakoski and Ben White. A delightful skit, "Jonah and the Whale" was performed by Adam Anderson,

Program Director, Marcee Anderson.
Many thanks to all those who ushered during the services: Richard Abrams, Reid Dulberger, Bruce Epstein, Martin

Last, but certainly not least, our heartfelt gratitude to Cantor Marie Betcher, whose magnificent voice lifted our
prayers and uplifted our souls for the fourth consecutive year. We extend a hearty mazel tov to Marie on her recent
investiture from the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music, where she received the official title of Cantor.
As we continue through the days of 5760, let us all open our hearts to the possibilities that exist in our wonderful
congregation. With the ongoing involvement and interest on the part of you, our members, Congregation Rodef

While the year 2000 may not have any particular meaning for Jews, prophetic
predictions regarding a certain moment in time have been common throughout our
history. For Christians, the year 2000 potentially represents an historic milestone.
Charismatic Christians have demonstrated their intensified interest in the new
millennium especially through pilgrimages to Israel. Some charismatic groups
believe it their responsibility to evoke the catastrophic Armageddon in order to
facilitate the "Second Coming of Christ." Others believe the anti-Christ is among
us in anticipation of Jesus' return. Beliefs such as these, and actions based on
them, will proliferate as the year 2000 approaches.

Jews have had their own share of predicted redemptions. On the eve of this new
millennium, we shall reflect upon what the Jewish community might expect from
Christians concerned with the new century, as well as how this notion of an awaited
era manifests itself among Jews - then and now.
