Dear Congregants,
As we begin September, I hope you have all had an
enjoyable and relaxing summer.
This past June we had the annual installation of our
officers and directors. Rabbi Zuker also decided not
to renew her contract, and we began the process of
looking for coverage for the holidays and lifecycle
events for the duration of her contract.
We also welcomed Daniel Simon (Rabbi Zuker’s new
son) to our community.
During the summer, we held many themed services to
attract new members and bring our community together. These were well-received and well-attended.
This fall we will be bring back dinners on Friday
nights. Your attendance will be needed to help build
community. Watch for the flyer.
A huge thank you to all who have and continue to
volunteer in various capacities. As the summer winds
down, with the High Holidays fast approaching, I ask
all of you to consider taking a more active role at the
Temple beginning this fall. Please contact me to discuss an opportunity that would fit with your work and
other time commitments. Your thoughts and ideas
on how we can make our Temple a shining star of the
Jewish community on the North Shore are always
welcomed, encouraged and needed.
Enjoy these last weeks of summer and I look forward
to seeing you and your families in September as we
welcome in the New Year.
Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!
Eric Richman
Sisterhood, Esther Kaufman
I don’t know where the summer went, but I turned the
page on my calendar today to September. When September begins, the pace of my life changes. I am
back to school and squeezing in household responsibilities around work obligations. The pace changes at
TNT as well. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur bring
throngs of people to the synagogue. Sukkot and Simchat Torah follow closely behind with their own set
of services and celebrations. The celebration of the
cycle of fall holidays provides us with new opportunities to reconnect with our Jewish community at
TNT, and rejoice together in the promise of a new
year.
One great way to get involved this year is through
Sisterhood. Our activities are so varied that everyone
is bound to find something that will interest them.
Our first meeting on September 10 is a program
called Drinkable Art. Instead of your ordinary paint
night, the painting is done on your choice of a coffee
mug or wine glass. If painting isn’t your thing, perhaps you’d like to help out with preparing and setting
up food for an event. Volunteers are always needed
to set up for break fast at the end of Yom Kippur services, put out refreshments in the Sukkah, or help
with weekly onegs. Maybe your talents lie in soliciting ads for our calendar, or decorating welcome baskets for new members. Throughout the year, Sisterhood offers a variety of general meetings as well as
card parties, rummages sales, dinners, and social
events. There is truly something for everyone! I have
also found that Sisterhood crosses all age barriers.
Everyone works together in a warm and friendly atmosphere for the benefit of the Temple, deriving
pleasure and satisfaction from helping out.
Rabbi Hillel said, “If I am not for myself, who will be
for me? If I am not for others, what am I? And if not
now, when?” As the calendar turns to September and
we begin a new year, let the time be now that you do
something for yourself and others by getting involved
in Sisterhood.
My family joins me in wishing everyone a Shanah
Tovah oo’Mitookah, a good and sweet year.

health experts even connect the apple peel to

Finally, one can witness the power of the biblical apple in its technological namesake. Why
else would the late Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, founders of Apple, Inc., select a logo of an

this lofty position?
Shanah Tovah, M’tukah Uvriah
(Wishing you a good, sweet and healthy year),
Of course, we can trace the apple all the way Cantor Steve
back to the Garden of Eden in the Genesis Creation tale. The serpent tempts Eve with a
“forbidden fruit”, often identified as an apple.
While Torah scholars actually denounce the existence of apples on that Tree of Knowledge,
Kabbalah actually refers to Eden in its entirety
as the “holy apple orchard”. Later in Genesis,
Isaac delights about his son Jacob, “Behold, the
fragrance of my son is like the fragrance of a
field, which the Lord has blessed” (Genesis
27:27). The French Rabbinic commentator
Rashi explained that the fragrance actually refers
to the apple orchard in Eden.
The most sensual Biblical canon, the Song of
Songs, gives apples an aphrodisiac quality. Solomon (or the anonymous alternative author)
writes “Beneath the apple tree I aroused you(r
love)” (Song of Songs 8:5). Obviously the apple holds a special place in the TaNaKh, so the
sweetness attributed to Rosh HaShanah is not far
-fetched.

Students, staff, parent volunteers, and friends of Foxborough Regional Charter School have been saving, trimming, and counting
cancelled postage stamps since 2009 as part of a Community Service Learning initiative, the Holocaust Stamps Project.
Five years ago, an ambitious goal was set – to collect 11 million
stamps to visually illustrate the enormity of that number of children,
women, and men having been killed as a result of prejudice, racism,
and discrimination by the Nazi regime. Six million Jewish people
and five million others considered by Germany’s dictator to be
“enemies of the State” are being honored and memorialized by each
of the collected stamps.
Thousands of the stamps are being used, by small groups of talented
middle and high school FRCS students, to create a series of 18
unique collage pictures that reflect causes and effects of the Holocaust. Long-term plans are for a public venue to be found where the
entire collection of stamps can be permanently displayed in a custom designed acrylic sculpture, along with the whole collage series.
As of mid-November, more than 5,467,130 stamps had been counted, but there is a long way to go before the goal is reached.
