DEL REBOLLET
History of the building
The church where the Virgin of Rebollet is worshipped
and the convent of which it formed a part were built to
house the Oliva Franciscan community who resided in
the Nuestra Señora del Pino convent (in the current
district of San Antonio) from the mid-15th century. Like
the castle at Rebollet, it was devastated by the
earthquake that struck the area in 1598. The new
convent and its church were built on land given by the
6th Count of Oliva (7th Duke of Gandía), Carlos Francisco
de Borja-Centelles y

ƚƵƌŶĞĚƚŚĞĐŚƵƌĐŚŝŶƚŽĂǁŝŶĞƌLJ͕ŝƚǁĂƐŶŽƚƵŶƟůϭϴϱϯƚŚĂƚ
it was acquired by eleven farmers and members of the
Third Franciscan Order. Two years later (1855), worship
was reinstated and the Virgin of Rebollet was moved from
the Santa María parish church. The former convent would
ďĞĂĐƋƵŝƌĞĚƐŽŵĞLJĞĂƌƐůĂƚĞƌďLJƚŚĞZĞǀĞƌĞŶĚ:ƵĂŶĂƵƟƐta Escrivá Llorca, who sold it in 1902 to the Carmelite
Sisters of St Joaquina Vedruna for use as a school (use that
ŚĂƐůĂƐƚĞĚƵŶƟůƚŚĞƉƌĞƐĞŶƚĚĂLJͿ͘

/ƚƐĐŽŶƐƚƌƵĐƟŽŶŵƵƐƚŚĂǀĞďĞĞŶǀĞƌLJƌĂƉŝĚ͕ĂƐƚŚĞĮƌƐƚ
stone was laid in 1599 and on 4 October 1606 (the Feast
of St. Francis of Assisi) the site was opened and the

works throughout the 17th century - for improvement
ƉƵƌƉŽƐĞƐĂŶĚĨŽƌƚŚĞĐŽŶƐƚƌƵĐƟŽŶŽĨƚŚĞŶĞǁŚĂƉĞůŽĨ
the Virgin. The latest of these works, in 1683, coincided
with a major architectural project that would culminate
in the early 18th century with the original church being
ĐŚĂŶŐĞĚ͘tŝƚŚƚŚĞĞĐĐůĞƐŝĂƐƟĐĂůĐŽŶĮƐĐĂƟŽŶƐŽĨDĞŶĚŝnjĄďĂů ;ϭϴϯϱͿ͕ ƚŚĞ&ƌĂŶĐŝƐĐĂŶƐ ůĞŌ ƚŚĞ ĐŽŶǀĞŶƚ ĂŶĚ ŝƚ
became state property. Sold to a private individual who

the west nave. The roof of the nave is barrel vaulted with
blocked windows and arches supported by pillars topped
with composite capitals. The transept vault, which is
square with side chapels and taller than the nave, is reinĨŽƌĐĞĚ ďLJ ďƵƩƌĞƐƐĞƐ͕ ƚŚƌĞĞ ŽĨ ǁŚŝĐŚ ĂƌĞ ůŽĐĂƚĞĚ ŽŶ ƚŚĞ
south façade between the adobe wall and the back wall.

the high chancel at the entrance, where some sketched

temple sanctuary. Square with two small, rectangular side
rooms of lesser height (reached by doors in the main
façade to the altar), it has a small dome on shells and
ƚƌĂŶƐǀĞƌƐĞ ĂƌĐŚĞƐ ĨĞĂƚƵƌŝŶŐ ƉƌŽĨƵƐĞ ƉĂŝŶƚĞĚ ĚĞĐŽƌĂƟŽŶ
that also extends to the imposts and part of the walls. It

south and west perimeter walls, made using a mud technique with layers of brick. Of these, a 32-metre stretch of
the south wall remains that is of 5m average height and in

of stone blocks. It is also likely that the dividing wall of the
church with the convent and the main façade in the

Apart for the adobe walls, almost all of the current church
dates from major refurbishment work carried out
between the late 17th century and early 18th century,
