Huddled in a valley basin surrounded by the Himalayas,
Lhasa is one of the world’s highest cities at an average
elevation of 3,500 meters. Meaning “place of the gods”,
it became Tibet’s political, religious and economic
center after the fifth Dalai Lama moved the capital here
in 1642. On this journey you’ll get at the heart of this
ancient capital-in-the-clouds and the spiritual home
of Tibetan Buddhism. In a whirl of prayer wheels and
stupas you’ll visit temples and monasteries thick with
incense and crimson-robed monks, breathe crystal clear
air in Tibet’s awe-inspiring landscape, and find serenity
in a uniquely spiritual culture.
