Digital Drawing Tablets: Direct on Screen Image Manipulation
A. Provide a description and intended purpose for all project expenditures and identify
expenditures from Central Pool funds.
This proposal is to acquire the Wacom Cintiq Digital Drawing Tablet Series that allows for on
screen interaction and manipulation of digital imagery and would be available to all students.

The curriculum in the College of Design focuses on visual ideation, creative problem solving,
visualization, and skill development. The faculty and students also understand the importance of
using digital technology and the relationship of connecting drawing, illustration, photographic
manipulation, and creating advanced work in 3-D modeling and animation. Digital imaging
would be improved through the use of high quality state-of-the-art on screen digital drawing
tablets. The ability to draw and manipulation digitally on screen would allow for greater
flexibility and intuitive aspects of natural hand-eye coordination within the digital realm. The art
and design studio is built on the tradition of drawing from still life, sketching preliminary design
work, and through to final compositions. It is through the studio background and training that
students learn to draw as a communicative tool, medium of expression through observation,
record keeping, and design ideation. Design and drawing through the use of photography
manipulation also assists students in the ability to draw, record, and measure as an important part
of their communication and ideation of preliminary design work. This equipment provides an
additional way to record the hand drawn mark, and how it challenges artists and designers to
understand and use it as fluently and preciously as traditional mediums.
Focusing on visual language and image making, the ability to create imagery through the
computer is an integral component of all digital art and design processes. In order to adapt our
diverse curricular offerings to a digital environment, high quality on screen digital drawing
tablets give greater range of control with digital manipulation in animation, photographic work,
digital illustration, digital image manipulation, and all other fields that use image-editing
software.
All expenditures will be from central pool funds. We propose to purchase twenty (20) smaller
sized Cintiq 21WX digital drawing tablets with pen and mouse, and carrying case for student
check out. In addition, five (5) larger Cintiq 21UX will be located stationary in the 4th computer
lab in the College of Design. These stationary digital drawing tablets are too large to check out,
but would provide greater control and detail in digital image making for students.
The Cintiq 21WX has a specific carrying case to handle all the additional
components for the digital drawing tablet, durable enough to handle
student checkout. This proposal also has a small amount of replacement
nibs to handle initial wear on the digital pens.
B. Describe specifically how the proposed facilities or services will be made available to
students.
1. Specify the hours when this facility or service will be available for general student use.
The printer and computer lab center in the College of Design is open to all students in the
university and is easily accessible with the extended hours that it operates. Students will be
able to work in the lab or check equipment out from this printing and computer lab center
during the following hours: Monday to Thursday from 8 am to 2:00 am; Friday from 8 am to
10 pm; Saturday 12 pm to 10 pm; and Sunday noon to 2:00 am. The typical checkout period
will be for one over-night period, but special circumstances will be considered. The system
that is already in place for checking out equipment will be used to efficiently dispense
equipment and guarantee its return in good condition. This equipment will be on a free
checkout basis to all students showing University identification.
2. Identify the number of students that will be able to use the facility or service
simultaneously during these hours.
Twenty five different individual students could work with the equipment at one time.
However, groups or teams of students will frequently share the equipment. Therefore, this
number is extremely flexible depending on the purpose and demand for the equipment at any
given time.
3. Identify the student population(s) that should benefit from this proposal. Estimate the
number of students to be served.
This equipment, because of its improved quality and flexibility, is a supplement to the pool
of general use equipment. This equipment is available for sophisticated visual projects.
Technology improves every year, yet these digital tablets are of the highest quality and will
be available to all students. This proposal aims to enhance the opportunities for advanced
individual working with all digital aspect of digital image work specific in any field.
Based on the Spring 2008 10-day list enrollment numbers there are 1880 undergraduate and
graduate students enrolled in the College of Design who could use this equipment. Students
will benefit from this proposal by having increased access to quality digital image making
equipment. Currently, there are no digital tablets to these quality on campus available to
students or in the College of Design.. This proposal will give students more access to the
equipment 7 days per week. Increased access and a more convenient location will better
serve the needs of students many of whom are balancing heavy class loads with work and
other obligations.
Students will benefit from the increased quality of this equipment. Higher resolutions and
better image quality are essential to digital art and design work. In addition to creating final
art projects, cameras often act as a device for creating preliminary sketches and can
accelerate the design process. These cameras will help students who work with advanced
image capture.
4. If the proposal involves the development of an innovative model, indicate how this model
will be disseminated to others in the university.
The acquisition of these cameras will promote the innovative use of technology in our various
curricular areas and broaden the experience of our students to include new media. The
inclusion of digital processes into as much of our curriculum as possible is an important goal
for the college. The College of Design operates a new printing service center for student.
Having digital input devices along with this digital output will greatly enhance the services
offered to all students in the university by this center.
C. If the proposed project requires special new technologies, describe how these
requirements will be met.
Existing facilities and support will be utilized for this equipment.
D. Identify university facilities that would be needed for the proposed project. Specify the
building(s) and room number. A scaled sketch of the floor plan showing the location of
equipment should be appended.
The existing printing center in the College of Design will be used for storage of this
equipment. The printing center is located on the fourth floor of the College of Design near the
computer labs.
Section III: Support and Maintenance
There is no maintenance package with these items. Consumable items, such as pens, cords, and
adapter will be replaced through student fees as needed. Students will individually be
responsible for damage to equipment up to the deductible amount. Wacom Digital Drawing
Tablet have a 2 year warranty on the product, to the original consumer purchaser, except for the
Software and consumable items such as the pen nibs, to be free from defects in materials and
workmanship under normal use and service for a period of two (2) years, from the date of
original retail purchase, as evidenced by a copy of the receipt and registration with Wacom by
mail or online within 30 days of purchase.
Based on previous experience, the equipment will last 3-5 years at which time we will have to
consider an upgrade regardless of the condition of the equipment. These digital tablets are stateof-the-art models, which should prove valuable to the longevity of the equipment. Since the
speed of changing technology requires upgrades every few years it is uncertain as to when this
equipment will need to be upgraded.
