news. John has a commercial pilot certificate
with single engine, mulitengine, and instrument
ratings, 450 hours of total flight time of which
50 are multiengine. When a friend of his, who
works for the regional carrier, encouraged him
to submit a résumé and offered to personally
recommend him, John went to work. With no
time to waste, he had a résumé written,
produced, and mailed within the week. Two
weeks later, he got the interview. Now what?
John was panicking. He really wasn’t
ready for the interview. With only three weeks
before the big day, John was faced with

Delta Air Lines recalled the last 158
furloughed pilots and is now actively recruiting first officers for their mainline operations. Minimums for interested applicants
are as follows: 1,200 total time, 1,000 fixedwing turboprop or turbofan, ATP written,
Class I medical, four-year degree, and at
least 21 years of age. Delta said they may
hire up to 200 new pilots in 2007. Qualified

AirTran Makes
$290M Bid for Midwest
AirTran Airways on December 13
made an offer to purchase Midwest Airlines
for $290 million in cash and stock options.
“This is a very strong strategic combination
that will create a national, low-cost, highquality airline,” said AirTran CEO Joe
Leonard. Midwest has hired investment
banking firms and outside consultants to
help evaluate the merger proposal.

US Airways
Increases DAL Bid
On January 10 US Airways raised
it s offer to purchase Delta Air Lines to
$10.2 billion, an increase of $1.6
billion from its original offer of $8.6
billion. The increased bid includes 89.5
million shares of US Airways stock and
$5 billion in cash.
Delta said it would review the
offer and added that the “revised
proposal does not address significant
concerns that have been raised about the
initial US Airways proposal.” Based
on Delta’s valuation method, US Airways estimated that the increased bid
could be worth between $12.7 billion
and $15.4 billion.

Current first officers interested in applying
must have: 800 TT, 50 ME, COMM/INST/
ME/RTOP, and a valid passport. Pilots with
an Advanced Jet Training (AJT) certificate
must have: 500 TT, 50 ME, COMM/INST/
ME/RTOP, and a valid passport. An AJT certificate includes: Level C/D jet sim experience, 20 hours in a level 5/6 jet FTD, FMS
and CRM training, glass cockpit experience,
and completion of Accelerated Jet Ground
School.

Fourth Quarter
Major Airline Results
Continental Airline (CAL) announced
they will post a modest fourth quarter loss
despite a better than expected December revenue performance. CAL is still forecasting
a full-year profit for 2006. According to JP
Morgan analyst Jamie Brown Alaska, American, and United may also post narrow losses.
US Airways is expected to post a profit for
the last quarter of 2006.
Eclipse Delivers First VLJ
Eclipse Aviation delivered its first
Eclipse 500 Very Light Jet (VLJ), to co-owners David Crowe and Jet Alliance. VLJ’s seat
between four and six passengers, weigh less
than 10,000 pounds, and can utilize the 5,000
satellite airports located around the country.
Eclipse currently has secured orders for
2,500 aircraft.
John Prater Takes Over
as ALPA President
Continental Airline pilot John Prater
took over as president of the Air Line Pilots
Association on January 1, 2007. Prater is
taking a hard-line stance and has stressed the
need for more collaborative action from all
airlines and has pledged to “make sure the
union grabs hold of any advantages placed
before us.” Prater beat out incumbent Duane
Woerth in an election last October.
Denied Startup Status
The Department of Transportation
(DOT) denied Virgin America’s startup application on December 27, 2006 saying that
the low-cost carrier failed to meet the U.S.
citizenship requirements. According to federal law foreign ownership in any U.S. airline is limited to 25 percent. The DOT said
that “Virgin America’s close relationship
with the U.K.-based Virgin Group indicates
that the carrier is not under the actual control of U.S. citizens.” Virgin, which currently
has 169 employees, nine A320s and A319,
and 42 pilots, said it would appeal the decision by January 10 but did not say how it
would attempt to reverse the DOT’s decision. ✈

completing his ATP written, passing a Class I
physical, and getting copies of his FAA, driver’s,
and educational records over the holidays–all
requirements for the interview. On top of that, he
wanted to talk to an interview coach and perhaps
squeeze in some flying time, either actual or in
the simulator.
With a regular non-flying, full-time job, this
was going to be hard to accomplish. Betty called
to ask me, “What should we do?”
Good question. Betty was wondering if John
should postpone the interview until he was
ready. John, living under the notion that you
have to take the interview when it comes, was
not very receptive to this idea. I thought it was
a good plan. I am not suggesting that John
delay the interview for another three weeks,
but one extra week may enable him to prepare
and to feel comfortable going into the
interview.
In my Interview Survival workshops held
in conjunction with the AIR, Inc. Airline Pilot
Career Day Seminar and Job Fair, I talk a lot
about being prepared for the interview. This
preparation should start early, since a no-notice
or short-notice interview could leave you in
a bind. Is it okay to accept a short-notice
interview and be unprepared? No. Will the
recruiters understand and sympathize? No. Can
you call and ask for another interview date if
there is no way you can be prepared in time?
Certainly! Ideally, you should take the first
interview date that is offered and live with it. But
in certain situations, and especially with your first
interview, you have to judge whether or not you
have enough time before your interview to complete certain tasks. Recruiters assume that
this work is already done, so they expect you to
show up ready to go. Additionally, being prepared
will put you at ease and give you more control
over the process–being relaxed and in control is
a good thing.
So what should John do? For now, his plan
is to use his vacation accrual and focus all of
his effort toward getting ready for the interview.
Even then, his plan may be a little ambitious.
One more week could relieve some of the
pressure. I have encouraged him to make the call
and ask for some more time. If the airline can’t
accommodate John, he can always keep the
original appointment. Will this act leave a
negative impression with the recruiters? Not
necessarily. How you handle the situation over
the phone is important. Be professional and
courteous. Explain that you are having trouble
arranging your schedule to meet the deadline
and ask if they would be able to reschedule the
interview. If they can, they will. If they can’t, then
you will have to do your best with the time you
have. Keep in mind however, that it is best to ask

for as much time as possible when you get the
initial call.
Arriving to your interview unprepared
and lacking requested paperwork will certainly
leave a negative impression. And we all know
what that means. Ultimately, coming to the i
nterview prepared is what is expected of you.
With interview offers being made at lightening
speed, make a plan now to accommodate this
requirement.
If you are applying for pilot position
you must anticipate that you will get an
interview. So don’t wait until you get the
interview to start your preparation. Being
prepared before the interview will allow you
to accept the earliest possible interview date
without delay, and with peace of mind. You’ll
only have yourself to blame if you are unprepared.
Get prepared, stay prepared. Make it your
NewYear Resolution and you won’t regret it! ✈
