Out & About
What crazy weather we have been having.
My son asked on our wild drive to work this week,
how do people do this in Alaska? I told him, I don’t
know, but that I was ready for this crazy weather
to be over. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy snow, only
if I don’t have to drive in it. I can only describe
what we have been getting as awful. Freezing
rain, snow, wind, more snow, frigid cold, all

Forty Quality Dealers Meet at Normal, Illinois’
Top of the Class Antiques Show
Article & Photos by Brian Maloney
Doug Jennings has managed the event since year-one. It’s held right on the Illinois
State University campus, in the Brown Ballroom of the beautiful Bone Student
Center Building. Normal, Illinois, at the crossroads of Interstates 74, 55, and 39
might sound like a long drive, but it’s actually only two hours from Chicago, St.
Louis, or Indianapolis.
The location of the show is no accident, for Jennings has a day-job too, as a program director with the Illinois State University’s School of Communication. The
School of Communication here is eight-hundred students strong - with more than
two-hundred of them in the Public Relations program. The Show serves as a department fundraiser and learning tool for those P.R. students too: over twenty serve as
interns at the three-day event.
That doesn’t mean that the show is an amateur affair. Quite the contrary - the event
attracts some of the best antiques dealers from the Land of Lincoln and several surrounding states. And with the goal to make the show as balanced as possible, show
manager Doug Jennings has crafted a diverse mix of dealers offering everything
from country stoneware and vintage toys to advertising, estate jewelry, and more.
Missouri’s Old Paper Boy Antiques was one of those dealers. They brought an
eclectic mix of oddities and ephemera, among them period Military posters from
both WWI and WWII. Also there: a mint-in-box unassembled Monogram Jumbo
1963 Deuce Coupe plastic model kit, asking price $750.
Shoppers found posters of a very different sort at the nearby display of Academy of
Posters: movie posters by the hundred. From classic one-sheet posters to lobby cards,
there were examples from classics like Singin’ in the Rain to swinging 60s Annette
Funicello beach flicks. A rare original watercolor storyboard from the making of the
1956 Audrey Hepburn romantic comedy Funny Face was a highlight there, complete
with Paramount Pictures documentation on the back and priced at $800.
Period furniture shoppers couldn’t have been disappointed with the selection at the
show either. Country at Heart Antiques brought their usual fantastic selection of
primitive pieces – plus decorated stoneware to spare. And Peacock Antiques brought
some notable pieces as well, my favorite there a country pegged corner secretary
with fall-front desk - asking price $895.
More into toys? The Paper Moon had lots to choose from, including some choice
litho-tin wind-ups. A rare 1930s Marx Popeye Express toy was one of the best there
– price tag $750. Pressed steel toy gems awaited at Mad Cat Antiques, like an early
Steelcraft Army Mack Truck ($650) nearly 2’-long; and toys from every era could be
found at Bob’s Americana, with cast iron examples dating from as early as the 19th
century.
I hope the photos will give you an idea of some of the treasures you missed. For
more information about the Top of the Class Antiques Show, you can reach show
manager Doug Jennings by telephone at 309-438-2872, or through the show’s website www.topoftheclassantiques.com. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of
next year’s Top of the Class Antiques Show in the Auction Action Antique News!

Rummage-A-Rama!
This Weekend At
Wisconsin State Fair Park
MILWAUKEE, WI – Rummage-A-Rama! is this weekend, February 23rd from
9AM to 5PM and the 24th from 9AM to 4PM at the State Fair Park Wisconsin Products
Pavilion.
This mid-winter show is the biggest of the five-show season. A record number of
participants, 115 to be exact, will be selling their wares this weekend. Customers travel from
all over Southeast Wisconsin to visit this eclectic show. A recent survey by Rummage-ARama! revealed that nearly half of customers visit from outside Milwaukee and Waukesha
counties. “I think it proves that this event is worth traveling for,” says Owner/Producer Tim
Gill. “Through cold, snow, wind, and hail, our customers are committed to hunting for treasures and bargains.”
Rummage-A-Rama! also regularly attracts new customers. The same survey
showed that about 1/5 of the customers at each show are first-time attendees. “A large percentage of our customers hear about the event from a friend or relative.” Gill says. “It’s contagious!” Rummage-A-Rama! comes to Wisconsin State Fair Park once more this season:
April 6-7.
Admission to Rummage-A-Rama! is $4 per person, but patrons who bring a donation of two non-perishable food items for Hunger Task Force get in for $2. Since its return
in 2009, Rummage-A-Rama! has collected 71,500 pounds of food through this promotion.
As always, kids age 12 and under attend Rummage-A-Rama! for FREE.
FREE parking is available for all Rummage-A-Rama! customers in the North Lot
by the Pettit National Ice Center via Gate 6; however, it requires an uphill walk to the
Wisconsin Products Pavilion. Preferred parking is available within the park for a $5 fee, as
regulated by Imperial Parking, by entering Gate 5 off 84th Street. For the most up-to-date
information on Rummage-A-Rama!, visit Rummage-A-Rama.com.
Rummage-A-Rama! is a collective rummage-sale-flea-market event consisting of
individual rummage sales and local and regional exhibitors offering an intentional and endless variety of new and used items. Milwaukee’s next Rummage-A-Rama! event will be held
April 6-7, 2013 at Wisconsin State Fair Park. Find Rummage-A-Rama! on Twitter at
twitter.com/rummagearama, and on Facebook at facebook.com/rummagearama. For a complete schedule of show dates for the 2012-2013 season, visit Rummage-A-Rama.com.
RUMMAGE-A-RAMA!, P.O. Box 14101, West Allis, WI 53214 or www.rummage-a-rama.com for more information about Rummage-A-Rama!, or to schedule an interview with Tim Gill, please call Tim directly at 414-899-0893 or email [email protected].

Produced by the Chicago Suburban Antiques
Dealers Association, the show celebrates our heritage
by collaborating with its sponsor, Garfield Farm
Museum in LaFox, Illinois. This museum is the only
surviving, historically-intact Illinois farmstead being
restored as a working 1840's living-history farm and
inn, a true asset for teaching American history.
Connect with others who love antiques and
history. Share knowledge and exchange stories.
Networking with members and dealers at the Chicago
Suburban Antiques Dealers Association's Fox Valley
Antiques Show is always welcome and often yields
surprising results. A quick glance at the YouTube
