I told him, I don’t know, but that I was ready for this crazy weather to be over. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy snow, only if I don’t have to drive in it. I can only describe what we have been getting as awful. Freezing rain, snow, wind, more snow, frigid cold, all Take The wrapped up in one storm. Always On Time! 6 Forty Quality Dealers Meet at Normal, Illinois’ Top of the Class Antiques Show Article & Photos by Brian Maloney Doug Jennings has managed the event since year-one. It’s held right on the Illinois State University campus, in the Brown Ballroom of the beautiful Bone Student Center Building. Normal, Illinois, at the crossroads of Interstates 74, 55, and 39 might sound like a long drive, but it’s actually only two hours from Chicago, St. Louis, or Indianapolis. The location of the show is no accident, for Jennings has a day-job too, as a program director with the Illinois State University’s School of Communication. The School of Communication here is eight-hundred students strong - with more than two-hundred of them in the Public Relations program. The Show serves as a department fundraiser and learning tool for those P.R. students too: over twenty serve as interns at the three-day event. That doesn’t mean that the show is an amateur affair. Quite the contrary - the event attracts some of the best antiques dealers from the Land of Lincoln and several surrounding states. And with the goal to make the show as balanced as possible, show manager Doug Jennings has crafted a diverse mix of dealers offering everything from country stoneware and vintage toys to advertising, estate jewelry, and more. Missouri’s Old Paper Boy Antiques was one of those dealers. They brought an eclectic mix of oddities and ephemera, among them period Military posters from both WWI and WWII. Also there: a mint-in-box unassembled Monogram Jumbo 1963 Deuce Coupe plastic model kit, asking price $750. Shoppers found posters of a very different sort at the nearby display of Academy of Posters: movie posters by the hundred. From classic one-sheet posters to lobby cards, there were examples from classics like Singin’ in the Rain to swinging 60s Annette Funicello beach flicks. A rare original watercolor storyboard from the making of the 1956 Audrey Hepburn romantic comedy Funny Face was a highlight there, complete with Paramount Pictures documentation on the back and priced at $800. Period furniture shoppers couldn’t have been disappointed with the selection at the show either. Country at Heart Antiques brought their usual fantastic selection of primitive pieces – plus decorated stoneware to spare. And Peacock Antiques brought some notable pieces as well, my favorite there a country pegged corner secretary with fall-front desk - asking price $895. More into toys? The Paper Moon had lots to choose from, including some choice litho-tin wind-ups. A rare 1930s Marx Popeye Express toy was one of the best there – price tag $750. Pressed steel toy gems awaited at Mad Cat Antiques, like an early Steelcraft Army Mack Truck ($650) nearly 2’-long; and toys from every era could be found at Bob’s Americana, with cast iron examples dating from as early as the 19th century. I hope the photos will give you an idea of some of the treasures you missed. For more information about the Top of the Class Antiques Show, you can reach show manager Doug Jennings by telephone at 309-438-2872, or through the show’s website www.topoftheclassantiques.com. And as always, keep an eye out for listings of next year’s Top of the Class Antiques Show in the Auction Action Antique News! Circa 1960’s “Bobby” helmet from Lancashire, England, from Nigel Russell Antiques - $100. 636-947-4703 You never know what you’ll find at The Peddlehorse Farm & Antiques, from Native American artifacts like this Plains Tribe buffalo hide shield ($525) to a 15” stoneware pickle jar with St. Louis advertising, asking price $180. 715-266-4409 16” diameter electric clock with Postal Telegraph advertising, from The Peddlehorse Farm & Antiques $275. 715-266-4409 Vintage movies are the focus at Academy of posters, but you’ll find much more there, like this original Ohio’s Robbens Metal 1953 watercolor storyboard from Restoration brought a wide array of restored vintage silver, like the 1956 Audrey Hepburn romantic this ornate 19th century water tankard, asking price $1,200. They comedy “Funny Face,” with can repair, re-plate, and polish all of your fine silver too – just give Paramount Pictures documentation them a call at 877-257-0596 on the reverse - $800. 217-840-9590 Among the many finds at Rae Patrick Enterprises: this circa 1910 N. L. White “King” trumpet, heavily engraved and priced at $395. 815-895-6033 All-original Wyandotte Truck Lines pressed steel hauler, 24” in length, from Bob’s Americana $139. 309-683-0899 Continued on page 8 British expat Nigel Russell brought a nice selection of memorabilia-of-the-realm, including this 10 1/2” Royal Doulton loving cup commemorating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 (and with an image of Elizabeth I on the reverse), one of only 1,000 produced - $850. 636-947-4703 7 Two very different military posters from Old Paper Boy Antiques: the WWII Amoco example with a dehumanizing depiction of a Japanese soldier priced at $475, the WWI Liberty Loan version at $375. 314-524-9400 Mike Cox of Academy of Posters with a rare 1938 Terry-Toons one-sheet movie poster in fantastic condition, asking price $375. 217-840-9590 J’s Antikes came with a choice Gray graniteware in an unusual mottled pattern, with this Dutch “Zeep, Zand, Soda” hanging laundry set priced at $195, the utensil set with hanging rack at $248. 309-635-5374 It was a wonderland of antique and vintage toys at The Paper Moon, with gems like this 6” Kenton double decker bus complete with passengers ($475) and 1930s Marx Popeye Express litho-tin windup, asking price $750. 309-452-2593 Mike Finley of Old Paper Boy Antiques lends scale to a jumbo 1963 Monogram Big Deuce 1932 Ford Roadster plastic model, mint and unassembled in its original display box - $750. 314-524-9400 More mottled gray graniteware from J’s Antikes: the nine-egg poacher priced at $95, the nesting set of four mixing bowls at $145. 309-635-5374 A wonderful selection of decorated American stoneware awaited at Country at Heart, like this boldly-lettered Sheehan & Co. five gallon jug, asking price $450. 815-795-6616 Weller Pottery collector Joe Baran was on hand with a wide variety of the famed pottery’s works, like this little jug-form Aurelian vase - $180. 847-431-1839 Buck & Wright St. Louis #10 covered cast iron skillet, from Zaffir Antique & Decorative Arts $325. 314-2763469 Sporting finds at Jesse Behr Antiques included whole school of tin-boxed Al. Foss Pork Rind Minnow lures, the rarest this No. 3 white example priced at $75. 309-661-2148 Chicago’s Turtle Creek Antiques came with period quilts aplenty, among them this 1920s appliqued quilt in a Rose of Sharon pattern, price tag $285. 773-545-7181 Continued from pages 6 & 7 8 From Bob’s Americana, a hard-to-find 1930s Bakelite pencil sharpener sporting the image of Our Gang’s Spanky McFarlane - $120. 309-683-0899 Peacock Antiques was headquarters for restored antique furniture, my favorite there this country craftsman-made corner secretary with fall-front desk - $895. 309-289-2356 Great look to this carved English oak chest from 4Ever Lookin’ Antiques, and priced at only $585. 219-863-4515 I found this useful country pine dining table at Peacock Antiques: 48” long closed, it opens to 84” by extending the breadboard leaves - $795. 309-289-2356 Circa 1860s Stevens cast iron cap pistol in good working condition, from Bob’s Americana - $245. 309-683-0899 It was toy collector’s heaven at Mad Cat Antiques, with finds like this early Steelcraft US Army Mack Truck, 22” in length - $650. 319-235-8866 Fenton glass is a specialty at Schurter’s Curio Cabinet, where the choices included this Lime Green Opalescent Hobnail cruet, asking price $450. 309-925-3031 Glass anyone? There was no shortage at art glass purveyors Schurter’s Curio Cabinet, where I found these Anchor Hocking green ribbed canisters ($90 each) and matching White City Coffee jar - $115. 309-925-3031 Doug Jennings has organized the event from the very first year. He’s a longtime antiques collector and dealer, as well as a faculty member at the show’s home - the Illinois State University’s Normal Campus. This Weekend At Wisconsin State Fair Park MILWAUKEE, WI – Rummage-A-Rama! is this weekend, February 23rd from 9AM to 5PM and the 24th from 9AM to 4PM at the State Fair Park Wisconsin Products Pavilion. This mid-winter show is the biggest of the five-show season. A record number of participants, 115 to be exact, will be selling their wares this weekend. Customers travel from all over Southeast Wisconsin to visit this eclectic show. A recent survey by Rummage-ARama! revealed that nearly half of customers visit from outside Milwaukee and Waukesha counties. “I think it proves that this event is worth traveling for,” says Owner/Producer Tim Gill. “Through cold, snow, wind, and hail, our customers are committed to hunting for treasures and bargains.” Rummage-A-Rama! also regularly attracts new customers. The same survey showed that about 1/5 of the customers at each show are first-time attendees. “A large percentage of our customers hear about the event from a friend or relative.” Gill says. “It’s contagious!” Rummage-A-Rama! comes to Wisconsin State Fair Park once more this season: April 6-7. Admission to Rummage-A-Rama! is $4 per person, but patrons who bring a donation of two non-perishable food items for Hunger Task Force get in for $2. Since its return in 2009, Rummage-A-Rama! has collected 71,500 pounds of food through this promotion. As always, kids age 12 and under attend Rummage-A-Rama! for FREE.
