Oregon MGMA is proud to announce our Annual Fall Conference, September 7-9, at The
Red Lion on the River at Jantzen Beach in Portland, Oregon.
Make your plans now to take advantage of this exceptional education program. As
practice administrators and office managers we are constantly subjected to changes in
the business of healthcare. This year’s OMGMA Fall Conference, “The Patient Will see
You Know... Envision the Outcome” is designed to help you grow your own professional
network by providing you the opportunity to get to know others facing these same
challenges. Faculty invitees will present a host of educational and informational
strategies to keep you confident and freely moving forward as our industry continues
to reinvent itself.
Please join us at the Red Lion resort-style hotel which is just seven miles from downtown
Portland, yet worlds apart in relaxing ambiance, overlooking the Columbia River. The
Red Lion hotel features 320 guest rooms and suites which offer river, pool or tennis
court views. Room amenities include private balconies, 32” LCD TVs, refrigerators and
microwaves.
Our annual Golf Scramble, planned for us this year by Jon and Jim Anderson, will be
held on Wednesday morning at nearby Heron Lakes Golf Club. The 18-hole Great Blue
Course at Heron Lakes Golf Club in Portland, Oregon was rated 4 Stars by Golf Digest’s
“Best Places to Play” for 2008/2009. This pre-conference event is a lot of fun regardless
of your golf skill level (or lack thereof!). It’s a great way to spend a beautiful afternoon.
The conference officially begins Wednesday evening with our ever popular opening
reception kicking off at 6 p.m., providing you some informal time to meet old friends,
new acquaintances and our Sponsors, Business Partners and Exhibitors. Throughout
Wednesday evening and each Exhibit Break during the conference, we will feature
drawings for valuable door prizes. Remember, you must be present to win.
Thursday evening includes dinner and musical entertainment. We are bringing back the
band, Hit Machine, created by Bart Hafeman. The energy projected from this 5 piece
band is highly contagious, to say the least. Their play list includes hits from all eras. Our
event will be held in the conference area of the hotel as well as their outside patio.
Last but certainly not least, we will feature a Conference App for use with any Smart
Phone or Tablet device! You’ll be able to access the conference schedule, session
materials and a list of other attendees and exhibitors within the powerful program.
See you in Portland!

around partnership creation, payer and provider engagement,
and asset development. In addition, John has conducted
research and published a perspective on employers response

Thursday, September 8 – Opening Session
Sonny Nguyen
The Doctors Company, Senior Director, Department of Patient
Safety and Risk Management
With over 100,000 mobile health apps now available, physicians
now have to handle an increasing amount of constant data
and patient information that they did not have in the past. This
presentation will share some of the risks and limitations to using
an app within your practice.
“Do It Well. Make It Fun”
Thursday, September 8 – Keynote, Lunch
Ron Culberson, MSW, CSP, CPAE
Sonny Nguyen earned his Bachelor of Arts
Degree from California State University Long
Beach while working full-time as a respiratory
care practitioner. He completed his Juris
Doctor from Chapman University School of
Law in Orange, California. He has earned
the Certified Professional in Healthcare
Risk Management (CPHRM) designation.
He is a member of the American Society for
Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM) and Oregon Society for
Healthcare Risk Management (OSHRM).
If you’ve ever had a boss who was really good at what he or
she did but was also fun to be around, you didn’t mind arriving
early or working late. In fact, you probably loved your job.
That’s the power of Do it Well, Make it Fun. It’s about seeking
excellence but making the process of life and work more fun.
This presentation shows practice managers how to create a
less stressful work environment where people want to work.
It also helps them understand that excellence combined with
fun and humor can improve productivity, create better working
relationships, enhance creativity, change the workplace culture,
and lead to the delivery of better services.
Mr. Nguyen has over 30 years of experience in leadership
positions at nursing homes, acute care hospitals, physician
practices, insurance companies, and a law firm. He has
presented numerous risk management educational seminars
to medical societies, physician groups, hospital medical staff
members, medical management associations, and medical
schools.
Ron Culberson, MSW, CSP, CPAE as
a speaker, humorist, and author of three
books, including his most recent called Do it
Well. Make it Fun: The Key to Success in Life,
Death, and Almost Everything in Between,
Ron Culberson’s mission is to change the
workplace culture so that organizations are
more productive and staff are more content.
By combining excellence with humor,
he helps organizations attract and retain great employees,
develop excellent leaders, and deliver extraordinary products
and services.
“The Marketplace Revolution: Shattering the
Sick-Care Model”
Thursday, September 8 – General Session
John Rudoy, PhD
For ten years, Ron worked in a large hospice organization as
a social worker, Counseling Manager, and Senior Director of
Quality Services. Through these roles, he gained experience on
the front line, in middle management, and ultimately in senior
management. He has a proven track record as a successful
member of a multidisciplinary team and as an effective senior
leader.
Oliver Wyman
Healthcare is an industry in transition, and that transition
is accelerating. Innovators as diverse as retailers, biotech
companies, wearables manufacturers, and software developers,
are already putting individuals in the driver’s seat, transforming
them from passive patients to active consumers. Successful
health systems and physician groups will break out of the sick
care model and broaden their relationships with consumers,
providing a wider range of services and access points, helping
individuals make more informed health and financial decisions,
and leading the way toward personalized medicine. This talk will
describe the new healthcare ecosystem and provide a roadmap
for participating in it, highlighting the surprising number of
providers who are already moving in this direction.
Since 1996, he has delivered over 1000 presentations to over
140,000 people in the U.S. and abroad. In 2001 Ron received the
Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation, the highest
earned designation from the National Speakers’ Association
and in 2014, he was inducted into the CPAE Speaker Hall of
Fame®.
John Rudoy, PhD, based in the Oliver
Wyman San Francisco office, is a thought
leader in the Health & Life Sciences Practice.
He has helped a range of clients, including
payers, providers, and health IT firms,
address the challenges and opportunities
that develop from changing consumer
expectations, reimbursement structures,
and regulations among other issues. John is

No matter where you look, everyone is calling for the transformation of American Healthcare, however, our presumptive

“Provider Predicaments – Cat Herding & Other
Strategies for Managing Provider Employment
Law Compliance Issues”
Thursday, September 8 – Concurrent Session #2
Randall Sutton | Lawyer
Saalfeld Griggs PC, Business Litigation & Employment Law
Providers are people too, which means they can get themselves
into messes, exercise poor judgment, or suffer challenges that
impair the efficient practice of medicine. When the provider
relationship is unhappy, no one is happy. Challenges can arise
from romantic entanglements, performance issues blamed
on disabilities, bullying of staff, or other misconduct. If the
relationship can’t be repaired, an exit strategy for the provider
is necessary. In an interactive workshop format focused on
problem-solving scenarios, we will discuss practical strategies
for investigating and responding to concerns, recommend
employment policies/practices, and discuss key protections to
include in employment contracts and buy-sell agreements.

Helping your patients pay their bills on time,
Increasing collection percentages, and
Negotiating patient payments while maintaining good
relationships with those patients.
You’ll walk away with an action plan to make sure that your A/R
isn’t fermenting!
The only constant in health care is change and the same is
true with health information technology (HIT). It’s the Wild West
out there and the world of HIT is expanding rapidly. Between
the increase in mobile device work for clinical purposes, an
expansion in the use of assistive technology and new and
changing patient tools to prompt greater patient participation
in their own care, it can be rather daunting. It also represents
a great opportunity as health care becomes more mobile. This
presentation focuses on the HIT landscape today and look
into the future. Along with great rewards comes greater risk.
Participants will learn how to take advantage of the expanding
presence of HIT in health care delivery and how to address
associated risks to adoption.

“Managing to Be a Great (and Fun) Leader”
Thursday, September 8 – Concurrent Session #9
Ron Culberson, MSW, CSP, CPAE
Sarah White joined The Doctors Company
in May of 2011, coming from The Doctors
Company Insurance Agency of Northern
California, a captive agency of The
Doctors Company. Sarah is a licensed
insurance agent/broker and has served
physicians, healthcare organizations, and
healthcare providers for 10 years. Sarah
is currently enrolled in Eastern Oregon
University where she is completing her bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration with an emphasis on leadership and
organizational management, from which she will graduate
September 2016.
Leadership success comes from creating
confidence in those you lead while creating
an environment that attracts and keeps good
people. In order to accomplish this success,
you must manage yourself, manage the
people, and manage the culture. You create
confidence by what you do and how you do
it. The “what” refers to the skills you need
to do your job well. The “how” refers to the
values or manner in which you lead. Great leaders are not only
skilled but embrace values that are respected by those around
them. Additionally, great leaders motivate and inspire staff to
pursue the mission of the organization.
