English ivy, a widespread invasive
plant in parks throughout DC that
SCA and its partners are working
to mitigate.
For more than thirteen years, SCA has fielded crews of local high school youth
to work on conservation and restoration projects in Rock Creek Park under the
supervision of the National Park Service. The crews are led by college students
and operate both in the summer and year round maintaining and repairing trails,
restoring habitats damaged by erosion, and removing exotic species threatening
the natural diversity of the park. All projects are designed and approved by Rock
Creek Park Administration.
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the nation’s leading provider
of conservation service opportunities, outdoor skills and leadership training
for young people. Our mission is to build the next generation of conservation
leaders and inspire lifelong stewardship of our environment and communities by
engaging young people in hands-on service to the land. A specific focus is on
traditionally underserved youth.
During 2013, SCA in partnership with neighborhood supporters, is seeking to
raise $25,000 to sponsor a crew of local high school youth to work at Battery
Kemble, Glover Archbold and other Rock Creek Park units on critical projects
ranging from invasive english ivy removal, bridge repair, erosion control, native
plant restoration. You can help meet this goal with your donation. Those who
contribute $1000 or more will be recognized as sponsors. Not only will you have
the satisfaction of making a tangible difference for your neighborhood parks, you
will also be making a positive difference for the youth involved.

Invasive plant management crews
Through our school year, summer employment, and education programs in
DC, SCA members receive training and service opportunities, environmental
education, career preparation and are exposed to SCA’s continuum of
conservation service programs.
Conservation Leadership Corps
The Conservation Leadership Corps is a program during the school year for
high school students, aged 15-19, with opportunities for environmental
education, conservation service, and leadership training through a hands-on
outdoor education program experience.
DC Summer Crews
The DC Conservation Crew Program provides more than 100 greater Washington,
DC high school youth with a significant and educational summer experience.
Participants are recruited from high schools throughout the area. SCA offers a
unique six-week summer program for high school students interested in working
outdoors in a local park.
Conservation Internships
Each year, SCA places over 2,000 college age youth (18+) in a diverse array of
businesses, public land agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the U.S.
The internships cover wide range of conservation, environmental and sustainabilitybased opportunities and vary in length from 3-12 months. Many interns parlay their
internship experience and the connections they make into careers in the natural
resources field and beyond.
