ou have to wonder how many frequent flyer points The
National Ballet of Canada will have amassed by the end
of the year. With tours to Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and
London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre already behind it, and a trip
to New York in the offing, the company seems to be jetting
as much as jete-ing these days.
All of this travel is the result of a new and exciting repertoire
(Christopher Wheeldon’s riotously exuberant Alice’s
Adventures in Wonderland bowled over audiences in
Los Angeles and Washington, and Alexei Ratmansky’s freshly
invigorated Romeo and Juliet was the company’s calling card
in London) that other dance centres are eager to see, and of
a talented, dynamic and pleasingly cohesive group of dancers
executing these works with verve and style. On the return

of the National Ballet’s tour to England, we spoke to Artistic
Director Karen Kain to consider the company’s current profile,
it’s talk-of-the-dance-world repertoire, its artistic ambitions
and its high-flying ways.
Performance: You’ve always said the quality of the dancing
is what comes first in a good ballet company and you’ve
always stressed how important it is to attract and keep
good dancers. In that light, how would you assess your
company’s strengths right now?
Karen Kain: It’s always been a challenge for the National Ballet
to attract the best dancers and keep them here, simply because
Toronto isn’t one of the leading world dance centres and there
are other companies with greater reputations than ours. That
said, I think the quality of our dancers right now is as high as
it’s ever been and our best dancers are as good as any you’ll
find anywhere, both technically and in their overall artistry. We’re
also seeing more dancers than ever audition for our company.

Performance: What do you attribute that to?
Karen Kain: I think it’s our focus on a strong and innovative
repertoire. If we can’t match the aura or allure of the legendary
companies, we can offer something else in the challenge and
excitement of working with terrifically interesting choreographers,
of realizing the kinds of works few other companies have
access to. That’s true for attracting established dancers and
for developing and keeping younger ones here, keeping them
committed to the ongoing project of this company. Dancers
are artists and if you make the work itself the prize, good
dancers will want to be a part of that.
Performance: Who are some of the choreographers
you’re most excited about working with?
Karen Kain: Well, the recent experience of working with
established and renowned choreographers like Christopher
Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky and Wayne McGregor and
young Canadian dancemakers like Robert Binet, Crystal Pite
and Aszure Barton, all of whom are making a name for
themselves internationally, has been hugely rewarding for the
company. They’re all choreographers with distinctive and very
different dance visions, with very individual approaches to
understanding and creating dance, so their works stretch and
challenge the dancers in incredible ways. You can watch the
dancers grow and advance their artistry as they learn and absorb
these works, whether in a classical or more abstract mode.
The other advantage to forging relationships with artists like
these is that their work is in great demand internationally.
People want to see it and that leads to invitations to tour to
larger centres.
Page 6

Performance: Speaking of which, you’ve been touring
a lot recently. How does touring fit into your vision for
the company?
Karen Kain: Touring brings exposure. It puts the company in
the eye of audiences, critics and other dance artists in many
of the most important dance centres of the world. It puts us
on the map. And that helps build and solidify the company’s
reputation. If we simply stayed at home in Canada, we could
be the best company there is, but we’d just be a rumour to
the rest of the world. By touring, others can actually see and
experience what we can do, and that helps us attract creative
forces. This goes back to bringing talent to the company.
If we get out and are seen, people – choreographers, dancers,
artistic directors – will know what we have here and appreciate
what we’re doing and they’ll want to be a part of it.

Performance: I would imagine the dancers must derive
a lot from touring, too.
Karen Kain: Touring is hard work, but it’s also a great motivator
for the dancers. It’s exciting and galvanizing to perform before
different audiences in different theatres and in different cultures.
The atmosphere, especially in the major centres, is a change
from home and even the way audiences respond to a
performance can be a new experience. Touring was certainly
an enlarging and enriching experience for me when I danced,
and I think it’s the same for dancers today. It keeps you on
your game, keeps you excited about what you’re doing. As
a dancer, you always want to communicate with as many
people as you can. You want audiences, and the more diverse,
the better. Knowing that people may be seeing you for the first
time and that you’re representing both the company and,
to an extent, the country abroad, sharpens and brings a new
self-awareness to your art.
Performance: Your recent success, both here and in the
U.S., with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, raises the
question of co-productions and how that arrangement
may figure in future works.
Karen Kain: The way Alice came about and unfolded was
almost perfect. After Christopher Wheeldon set Polyphonia on
our company, I asked him if he would be interested in creating
a new work for us. He told me of his plans for Alice and asked
if we would be interested co-producing it with The Royal Ballet.
After I discussed it with Monica Mason and we firmed up the
details, everything fell into place with remarkably little stress.
The fact that the ballet was such a success – both financially

and artistically – and that the process was so rewarding
naturally made us want to try it again. So we’re going to be
co-producing Christopher’s The Winter’s Tale with The Royal
Ballet in the coming year. If the experience of Alice is anything
to go by, it should be a very exciting project and it’s one that
we’re really looking forward to.

Performance: What’s in store for next season?
Karen Kain: In purely choreographic terms, one of the most
exciting programs will be Innovation. It involves new works by
three exceptional Canadian choreographers – Robert Binet,
José Navas and James Kudelka. There’s a great appetite for
homegrown work among our audience and these three artists,
all at different stages of their careers, represent the best that
contemporary ballet has to offer. Then there is Aszure Barton’s
Watch her, which wowed audiences when it premiered in 2009,
a revival of Sir Frederick Ashton’s A Month in the Country,
which I think is a work ideally suited to our dancers, a mixed
program of Marco Goecke’s stunning re-working La Spectre
de la Rose, Jerome Robbins’ beautiful Opus 19/The Dreamer
and William Forsythe’s wittily subversive the second detail,
as well as three full-length works from our classical repertoire,
Swan Lake, Onegin and Cinderella.
Performance: That sounds like a season from a very
confident and sure-sighted company.
Karen Kain: That’s us. n

he daily ballet class that traditionally begins a dancer’s day
serves a variety of functions. It is a mental and physical
warm-up, a maintenance appointment for whatever has
got out of tune the preceding day, a review of fundamental
technical principles, and a social ritual that reminds the
members of the company of their aesthetic and artistic values.
More than anything, however, it is a dancer’s daily
confrontation with the limits of his or her instrument, the
aspiration to be more than the sum of those physical parts and
the inevitable realization that perfection is a thing of the mind,
rather than the body. As such, in spite of the apparent public
nature of a gathering that can include 60 or 70 people, class
is an intensely private and personal time.
Each dancer will approach the class somewhat differently,
depending on what is planned for the rest of the day. A day
with a run-through of a new principal role will naturally demand
Page 12

a different focus than a day which will be spent learning new
material or in a small scale rehearsal with few observers. Some
dancers will push extraordinarily hard in class on a day when the
schedule will make severe demands, using the physical effort
as a way to burn off anxiety, and to make the rest of the day
seem easier. Others will use less physical energy, and focus
instead on honing the mind/body connection, so that the clarity
of intent expressed through action will remain accessible
throughout the challenges of the day or the evening performance.
Class always begins with exercises that are fundamental to
sophisticated physical control. The dancers hold on to a support,
called a barre, and do hundreds of repetitions of basic elements
that create the unique posture, flexibility and muscle development
that identify a classical dancer. The exercises – pliés, tendus,
ronds de jambe, and so on – are then repeated in the middle
of the room without the support of the barre, and then
combined and elaborated, so that by the end of 75 minutes,
the dancers move dynamically through space, jumping, turning,
and using the full range of movement created in the early part
of the class. In a kind of daily epiphany, the dancer achieves
a temporary, but satisfying sense of mastery, in which the
physical understanding of fundamental principles allows the
achievement of complex virtuosity. Nonetheless, this mastery
is a moving target, so that the more one knows, the more one
realizes there is to learn.
On first observation, the personal and spiritual nature of the
daily class is rarely apparent. Class looks like a group of people,
who more by accident than design, are executing similar
movements, and following the direction of a rather distant
authority. Looking more closely, however, one sees that the
iron discipline of necessity touches every person in the room –
teacher, musician and dancer alike. Every class is both an
occasion for celebration of ability and a potential disaster.
Seen in this light, class becomes both the daily affirmation
of a dancers’ faith in his or her own ability, and the coin that
pays for the privilege of a life spent in pursuit of a dream. n

Synopsis
Scene I: The love between José and his
village sweetheart, Michaela, has grown cold.
José finally summons up the courage to
leave, his determination strengthened by a
vision of the gypsy Carmen, all fire and sexual
enticement in comparison to the gentle
Michaela.
Scene 8: Garcia and his bandits enter as
Carmen and José, momentarily sated, circle
hand in hand, but she swiftly returns to her
wanton ways and flirts audaciously with the
bandits. Driven to distraction when Carmen
tauntingly kisses Garcia, José stabs Garcia
in the back.
Scene 2: Carmen dances seductively with
her official lover, the bandit chief Garcia, and
his men. José is smitten as he watches the
exotic Carmen with the cigarette girls who are
Carmen’s workday companions. Carmen
gets into a fight with another woman.
Scene 9: José is tormented by jealousy
and guilt.
Scene 3: Carmen and José are passionately
attracted to each other, but it is his duty to
arrest the gypsy.
Scene 4: José allows Carmen to escape;
their passion for each other heats up, but she
runs away.
Scene 5: Momentarily bereft, José despairs.
Meanwhile, Michaela seeks him out and tries
fruitlessly to woo him back to her. At the end,
Michaela leaves, dejected.
Scene 6: To the music of savage drums, the
habitués of Lilas Pastia’s seedy bar, led by
Carmen and Garcia, seek out casual partners
for the night. José, lurking outside, spots
Carmen and watches hungrily.
Scene 7: Left alone, Garcia and Carmen
share some tender erotic moments. When
Garcia leaves, José takes his place in Carmen’s
intimate embraces. They are alone together
for the first time.
Scene 10: A new figure appears: Escamillo.
But he is not simply a man, but rather a bull,
the personification of masculine power and
the object of Carmen’s desire. Wild and
dissolute, he overwhelms Carmen, who
abandons herself to him totally. The crowd
cheers and Escamillo is carried off triumphantly.
José, seeing all, is shattered.
Scene 11: Carmen and José confront each
other once more and are involved in mortal
combat. Carmen wants to leave José. Seeing
that he can never possess the independent
and highly sexual Carmen, José pulls his
dagger. Active to the end, Carmen impales
herself on it, preferring to die rather than lose
her freedom. Horrified, José sinks into
profound grief and despair.

A Note on Carmen
T
here have been many ballet versions
of the story of Carmen, but there has
never been one like this groundbreaking,
genre-bending re-conceptualization by the
provocative Italian choreographer Davide
Bombana. While maintaining an allegiance
to the basic narrative of the Bizet opera,
Bombana dispenses with the inessentials
and goes straight for the latent carnality and
primal passions at work at the heart of the
story. The work premiered in 2006 and now
Mr. Bombana has expanded his earlier version
into a full-length work, allowing for further
dramatic definition, greater theatrical scope
and a broader platform for his dance ideas.
The full-length version gives freer lay to the
story and the characters, while never

sacrificing the unflinching carnality and
essentially tragic vision that pulsate at its
heart.
“I find Carmen’s plot fascinating and very
modern; everything is there: a sense of fate,
the violence that dominates human relationships, love which devours and destroys
everything and human isolation. It’s not a love
story. There’s not really a happy moment for
them, because neither of them will compromise.
Carmen is a force of nature, an independent
woman, faithful only to herself. José wants
to change her — and that leads to tragedy.
José is attracted to her sexuality but in the
end that terrifies him to the point of killing her.”

Georges Bizet
Composer
Georges Bizet was a French
composer of the Romantic
era. A child prodigy, Bizet
entered the prestigious Paris
Conservatory of Music at the
age of nine. In 1857, he
shared a prize offered by
Jacques Offenbach for a
setting of the one-act operetta
Le Docteur Miracle. Later
that year, he won the coveted
Prix de Rome. As per the
conditions of the scholarship,
he studied in Rome for three
years where his talent began
to mature with such works as
Symphony in C and the opera
Don Procopio. Bizet's bestknown work, Carmen, was
based on the 1846 novel of
the same name by Prosper
Mérimée. It was not an
immediate success and Bizet
became despondent over the
perceived failure but praise
came from such luminaries
as Camille Saint-Saëns, Pyotr
Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Claude
Debussy, who recognized its
greatness. Their views were
prophetic, as Carmen became
one of the most popular
works in operatic history.
Just a few months after the
opera’s debut, Bizet died at
the age of 36.

Kancheli, Silvestrov and others
– he was also influenced by
the Second Viennese School
and Shostakovich. In the

Reaching Audiences
and Inspiring Donors
O
ur June season in Toronto always
feels like the grand finale to a year
of beautiful, innovative performances; of
creative partnerships and friendships; and
of artistic growth. As I think of the incredible
season that will soon conclude, I also think
of the many audiences we have reached and
our ability to create for them unique and
memorable dance experiences.
The Canadian premiere of Nijinsky in March
showcased the incredible talents and
commitment of our artists, all of whom worked
tirelessly to realize John Neumeier’s gripping
choreographic vision for this ballet. Our
presentation this month of Davide Bombana’s
full-length production of Carmen offers
further evidence that our artistic leadership
remains fearless when it comes to presenting
cutting-edge ballet for audiences both on
tour and at home.
The National Ballet performed this year in
cities as far-flung as Los Angeles, Washington,
D.C., Ottawa, and London, England, attracting
new audiences and garnering rave reviews.
Also on tour were the Apprentices of YOU
dance, who recently travelled to Thunder
Bay, Port Hope and North Bay to offer ballet
workshops and performances in communities
underserved by professional dance.

We are so fortunate to perform for audiences
who not only applaud our efforts in the theatre,
but who also take time to donate to our
organization throughout the year. Your gifts
are vital to the ongoing success of this
company. The passionate commitment
of our audiences and donors is behind our
every achievement – it inspires us and it
creates new possibilities for developing the
art of ballet.
To our donor family, I extend my sincere
gratitude for an extraordinary year. Thank
you for embracing your passion so avidly.

Donor Profile:
Georgina McLennan
When did your appreciation for ballet begin?
I was 11 years old and living in London,
Ontario when The National Ballet of Canada
arrived with a new production of Swan Lake.
I was a competitive swimmer, but I hadn’t had
any real exposure to ballet. I fell in love with
the art form immediately. From then on, I went
to the ballet whenever I could with my sisters
and later with my husband. I took him to see
his first performance when we met as
undergraduates at university and he loved it
also. He passed the test!
Georgina and Ned McLennan with Principal
Dancer Jiří Jelinek. Photo by Bruce Zinger.
And you have stayed close to the National Ballet ever since?
I have attended National Ballet performances regularly since the late 1960s and we became donors
in the 1970s. I remember receiving a Celia Franca Medal after we gave our first donation all those
years ago. I always took my own children to the ballet when they were young and now I have the
pleasure of taking my grandchildren as well. We feel they benefit greatly from seeing such a wealth
of Canadian talent and they just love the performances. My children are always quick to use our
tickets when we’re away.
What do you feel are the benefits of being a donor?
This is our way of standing behind a wonderful company that, in our opinion, is just as strong and
dynamic as any ballet company in the world today. We are so in awe of the dancers and we see
the amount of work they put into their art every day. Our donations speak to our admiration for what
the entire company has achieved and our hope that they continue to excel in years to come.
What was it like to travel with the company to London, England recently?
It was absolutely thrilling to join the company for such an important tour and to watch our dancers
perform on the international stage. The performances were brilliant; everyone gave their best.
The audience responded so positively and with plenty of praise. I heard only good things from the
people we met there, many of whom had come to the theatre on the recommendation of friends
and family who had been impressed with the production on opening night.

YOU dance on tour.
Staff photo.
were just 18 of us on the tour and it felt like a great team working together
“to There
share ballet. We really appreciated being so close to the audience and to get
their immediate responses. We heard that the children were inspired to dance and
to explore the arts. Overall we felt privileged to be able to inspire people with what
we can do as dancers.
”
– Miyoko Koyasu, YOU dance Apprentice
“
Touring to these smaller centres felt similar to growing up as I did in Iowa where
there wasn’t a lot of opportunity to be exposed to the arts. It was exciting for us
to bring ballet to the children and students and for us to see how open they were
to their experiences and how honest they were in their enthusiastic responses.
– Trygve Cumpston, YOU dance Apprentice

”
he Apprentices in The National Ballet of Canada’s RBC Apprentice Programme set-off
this spring on a three city tour to Thunder Bay, Port Hope and North Bay with a series
of interactive performances and movement workshops designed for elementary school
students. The YOU dance tour, under the leadership of Artistic Director Lindsay Fischer, also
included community performances and ballet master classes.
Performing outside the Greater Toronto Area in fruitful collaborations with regional schools
and arts organizations made it possible to share the joy and power of live ballet with new
young audiences.

The Patrons’ Council
Celebrates 30 Years
A Message from Krista Kerr,
Chair, Patrons’ Council Committee
F
or 30 years The Patrons’ Council has offered the benefits of
community to those who love great dance and understand the
value and joy of supporting Canada’s largest performing arts
organization. As members we enjoy opportunities to celebrate the
National Ballet, to learn more about the artists and productions, and
to participate in social events.
The willingness of patrons to offer their encouragement, friendship
and enthusiasm is boundless. The donations of Patrons’ Council
members are offered as gifts that reflect our passion for watching
the National Ballet perform. Above all, I believe our legacy is defined
by a generosity of spirit.
Krista Kerr.

The Dancers Meet Their
Shoe Makers in London
W
hile The National Ballet of Canada was on tour in London,
England this spring, the dancers had the opportunity to
“meet their makers” at special pointe shoe fittings. Pointe shoe
makers identify themselves by leaving a unique symbol on the
soles of the shoes they make. “Diamond”, for example, will make
all the pointe shoes for a specific dancer to ensure consistency.
Each pair of pointe shoes, handmade at Freed of London, costs
roughly $85. A principal dancer may go through as many as
three pairs in one performance. In total, the National Ballet
requires a total of 2,000 pointe shoes a year!
By donating today, you can help the National Ballet keep its
dancers on their toes.
For more information about how you can help,
please contact Deanna Underwood at

A Performance
by The National Ballet
of Canada

E
very performance by the National Ballet is a magical occasion in its own right,
defined by the artists, audience members and donors who come together to
participate in a unique experience of live dance. A Performance Sponsorship celebrates
the singularity of one afternoon or evening of ballet and allows participating companies
to share in that occasion.
Sponsoring a ballet in our 2013/14 season such as Swan Lake will provide your company
with a valuable and far-reaching association with the National Ballet, along with profile
branding, media exposure and hospitality opportunities for clients and employees.
A legacy production that represents the pinnacle of classical ballet, Swan Lake attracts
large audiences who will associate excellence, leadership, and distinction with your
sponsorship.
JOIN THE NATIONAL BALLET ON STAGE IN 2013/14 AS A SPONSOR!
For more information about all sponsorship opportunities, please contact
Susan Rutledge at 416 345 9686 x380 or [email protected]

Celia Franca
Society
I
n addition to donations made in their lifetime, many donors have also established
gifts in their estates or through financial planning to help guarantee the future
of artistic excellence at The National Ballet of Canada. These legacy gifts reflect
an individual’s belief in supporting the ongoing needs of the National Ballet and
its mission to present the masterworks of classical and contemporary ballet.
Donors who arrange a legacy gift are invited to join the Celia Franca Society,
allowing the National Ballet to acknowledge their generosity and foresight during
their lifetimes. In gratitude, the National Ballet invites members of the Celia Franca
Society to special events and offers public recognition.
The Celia Franca Society is named in honour of the National Ballet’s Founder,
to pay tribute to her vision, tenacity and passion. The members of the Celia Franca
Society are likewise recognized for their dedication and generosity.
“It is my dream that The National Ballet of Canada
endure forever and ever.” – Celia Franca, 2006
