BEYOND THE FIELD
Maloney Honored With
Chancellor’s Award
Getting Involved...
Buffalo State student-athletes were active in the community once again
during the fall semester, being called to action in the wake of the surprise
October snow storm.
Over 100 student-athletes volunteered their time to help clean up the
community following the storm that caused significant damage to the
college campus and the
surrounding community.
On Oct. 21, a team of studentathletes partnered with Buffalo
State campus maintenance
personnel to remove brush
and downed trees that littered
the campus grounds. Buffalo
State’s Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC)
initiated the project to ensure
the campus would be ready to host the following week’s Homecoming/
Parents Weekend festivities.
Another large group of Bengals’ student-athletes were out making
a difference in the community again on Sunday, Nov. 5. The SAAC
coordinated the local efforts of the project in conjunction with the State
University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Community Service
Day. For the second-consecutive year, Buffalo State’s student-athletes
aligned with the Buffalo Mayor’s office to clean up the bike path leading
from Buffalo State to Delaware Park. The group cleared debris and tree
limbs from the path and playground that had been made unsafe by the
storm. The student-athletes also planted over 400 daffodil bulbs along the
path.
“It is impressive to see our
student-athletes take the time
to go out and help others in
our community, when so many
of them have already had so
much to deal with in their own
personal lives in the wake of
the storm,” said CHAMPS Life
Skills coordinator and SAAC
advisor Meg Stevens.
The next department-wide community service initiative will be the annual
“Kids’ Night Out” that welcomes Buffalo-area youth to the college’s athletics
facilities for a night of fun and games.

Dr. Maloney accepts the Chancellor’s Award
from College Council Chair John T. Hoskins and
President Dr. Muriel A. Howard on Oct. 21
Dr. Gail F. Maloney, the Senior Woman
Administrator and Senior Associate Director
of Athletics at Buffalo State, was honored
with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence
in Professional Service. Maloney has
dedicated herself to making a difference in
women’s athletics since she came to the
college in 1978. During her tenure, her
most recognizable accomplishments came
on the hardwood as she mentored the
women’s basketball team for 21 seasons,
leading the Bengals to a record of 374154. Her teams captured seven SUNYAC
Championships and made nine trips to the
NCAA Playoffs. Among her accolades are
SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors in 1984,
1989 and 1994. She has also excelled in
administrative roles with the Intercollegiate
Athletics Department, including serving
as interim director. Assuming her current
position as Senior Associate Director of
Athletics in 2001, she began administering
student services, focusing on advancing
the welfare of all student-athletes. She
then added business management
responsibilities, improving accounting and
budgetary procedures. Maloney earned her
Ph.D. in Social Foundations of EducationHistory of Education from the University
at Buffalo in 1995. Her dissertation was
titled: The Impact of Title IX on Women’s
Intercollegiate Athletics. Maloney also has
a Master’s degree in student personnel
services from Buffalo State and a
Bachelor’s degree in physical education
from Cortland.
