may need you to plant plants, weed, harvest or assist with side projects in
the asparagus patch, berry patches, etc. Open Wednesday, June 3–Saturday,
October 3. Plant days begin June 3 until all plants are in the ground. Harvesting
begins tentatively August 5 on Wednesdays and Fridays only. Special Monday
evening harvest dates will be as follows: August 10, 24 & September 14 from

able to provide guidance if requested. Gardeners will be required to donate (10)
hours of their time to the Community Garden in order to remain in good standing.
The Community Garden kick off meeting will be Monday, March 30 at 6–8pm.
Mandatory new gardener orientation will be held at the Garden—pick a day—
April 20 or May 18, 6–8pm. Don’t miss out on getting your plot, register now!
Forms can be downloaded online and brought in, mailed in or dropped off to our
after-hours drop box. Cost $25 res/plot and $35 non/plot.

WINTER/SPRING 2015
For ages 4–14 (kindergarten–8th grade). Our program combines two crucial courses
into one, Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project: Secure Child (child
safety). Students will be trained with proven, age-appropriate techniques that are
necessary for kids to protect themselves from attackers. This program is set in a fun,
yet structured, environment which will give your child a positive outlook on learning
a martial art. We focus on healthy attitudes versus perfection! Participants will
achieve great self confidence and leadership through the physical techniques, mental
strategies, drills and exercises they are led through.
Sanchin-Ryu’s Karate for Families!
A Parent AND Child program for all ages! Set in a fun, non-competitive and
informative atmosphere, this program allows parents to learn alongside their children.
Physical techniques will be instructed along with drills and exercises, to help you
have a positive experience with your self defense education. Sanchin-Ryu will teach
you how to use your whole body, rather than just certain muscle groups, so size and
stature are not an issue.
Sanchin-Ryu’s “Grace Under Pressure” Women’s Self-Defense!
For ages 14 and older. Learn to act on stressful situations rather than being controlled
by them in a fun, go-at-your-own-pace environment. Our program, titled “Grace Under
Pressure”, is a hands-on study of personal protection at home, school and at the
workplace. We’ve designed street-wise techniques so that size or strength, age or
athletic ability are not factors in defending one’s self.
Sanchin-Ryu’s Karate for Adults!
For ages 14 and older. Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere,
this program is designed to empower today’s adults with knowledge that can save
your life! Students will learn a broad range of techniques including individual strikes,
advanced combinations and more. You will also receive training on how to deal with,
get out of and counter different grabs and other attack scenarios. Sanchin-Ryu will
teach you how to use your whole body, rather than just certain muscle groups, so size
and stature are not an issue.

Tamiya Ryu Iaijutsu
(Japanese Sword Class)
Kunst Des Fechten
Train your body, spirit and mind. Tamiya Ryu
Iaijutsu is a Koryu Japanese Sword Art, not taught
outside of Japan until recently. We are the only
official group in the U.S. teaching this particular
art. The Clarkston Branch is managed by Kenneth
Young (Genchu) Sensei (4th Degree) and guided
by the 15th headmaster in Japan. This class is for
adults over the age of 18 (no exceptions). Since
many of our techniques start from a traditional
kneeling position, students should expect to get
into, and up from, this position several times a
class. Association and equipment fees will be
needed for continuous study; these details will be
covered in class. Visit www.ustamiyaryu.org to
learn more and see a short video about the art. REGISTRATION NOW ONGOING FOR SESSION

Learn the historical German Art of Combat
(Kunst des Fechten) as it is outlined in the
fencing manual of 16th century German master,
Joachim Meyer. With the Longsword at its core, subsequent
classes will include additional tools. Classes are taught by Member of the Meyer
Freifechter’s Guild: Graham Scherr. Due to
limited equipment available, few spaces are
available. This is a full contact combat art and
as such, the age limit is 18, or 16 with written
parental consent. A waiver also MUST be
signed prior to participation (will be available at
first session). Upon deciding serious pursuit of
this art, obtaining personal equipment is highly
recommended, as is applying for membership

Reduce Your ‘Rainwater
Footprint’ With A Rain Barrel
Rain barrels are a great way to capture rain water
for use on your vegetable and flower gardens,
trees, and turf grass. They also benefit our nearby
lakes and streams by reducing the amount
of rainwater runoff that is being sent these
waterways via pipes.
Rain Barrel Features to Consider:
nRemovable top—useful for dipping water out
with a watering can.
nOverflow portal—for excess rainwater
overflow
nStand or blocks for raising the barrel—
Elevation is essential for maximum water
pressure (1–2 feet is recommended).
nScreen over the barrel opening—to trap
leaves/debris and mosquitoes.
Rain Barrel Selection & Placement:
nRain barrels should be placed near your
downspouts.
nRain barrels range in cost from $70 to $250,
depending on the style and shaping. Choose a
style that is right for you.
nManufactured rain barrels come in different
sizes (30 gallon, 60 gallon, or 80 gallon).
Consider how much rain you will need to
capture.
Rain Barrel Installation:
nUse flexible downspout material to connect
the downspout to the barrel. Downspouts that
‘hang free of a solid surface’ are vulnerable to
wind damage.
nAn extension hose attached to the overflow
port may be useful.

“When 600 people age 85 and older

this than resilience. Dr. Thomas K. Stone

is offering an ACT Prep class
This 3-hour ACT Prep Workshop is for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This class helps

questions to expect for each section of the test, teaching both general and specific test-taking strategies,
giving tips for pacing during the test, explaining the rubric for the essay portion, as well as administering
and correcting mini practice tests. The best way to reduce anxiety and increase confidence is to be
familiar with expectations. With the requirement of all juniors to take the ACT as part of the Michigan

Student should bring a scientific calculator and a pen and pencil. A manual with a complete practice test

only be given if requested 48 hours prior to the class.
