A Back to School Edition!
Parent Newsletter
August 2015
Principal’s Message
Dear Kleb Parents and Students,
Welcome back, Bearcubs! It is hard to believe that the 2015-2016 school year is just around the
corner. We are so very excited to see our returning Bearcubs and extend a warm welcome to our
incoming sixth graders and new students! I want to assure both parents and students that the faculty
and staff of Kleb Intermediate strive to make the back to school transition an exciting and smooth
experience for all involved. It is our goal to continue to make Kleb a place of learning where students
enjoy coming to school, each and every day.
There are many exciting changes coming to our new school year at Kleb! One change that the
Kleb faculty is super pumped about is our new Bearcub Den period! Bearcub Den is a 33-minute
classroom period (daily, before 5th period) where students will receive a variety of structured
opportunities with a Bearcub Den teacher/class. Such opportunities include:
 Weekly character development lessons (occurring at the beginning of the year for two weeks and every
Monday after that);
 Standards-driven instructional intervention and support (as needed, occurs in 3-week cycles that run
Tuesday-Friday)
 Den Hall- a time to see other teachers and complete make-up work and/or time to
independently work on homework, assignments, TPSP projects, etc. (every Wednesday and
Thursday)
 Silent, sustained reading days with student book of choice (every Tuesday and Friday)
Last year, we case-studied and extensively planned for this opportunity, so we are excited to see it come
to fruition. It is our goal at Kleb Intermediate to grow and develop our students both academically and
socially. Bearcub Den will help facilitate the time and structure needed to reach our goals. We look
forward to working with your student(s) in this capacity to ensure success and learning for all!
Also, please note that the Kleb bell schedule (see page 6) is slightly modified, with two bell
schedules; one for 6th graders and one for 7th and 8th graders. 6th graders get out of school 5 minutes
early (3:50) and start 5 minutes sooner (8:50). This staggered bell system allows for better hallway
traffic patterns and for our new Cubs to get acclimated to the intermediate life! Kleb opens its doors for
all at 8:15, with breakfast starting at 8:25. Thank you in advance for dropping off your student on or
after 8:15 as a supervised Bearcub is a safe Bearcub! Students may visit their teachers in the morning
after 8:15 on days designated by their teacher with a dated and signed parent permission note.
As we gear up for the new school year, I would like to inform you of upcoming activities and
events scheduled in the near future at Kleb Intermediate:
 Thursday, August 20: School Supply Sale- School supply packs, spirit shirts, locker padlocks,
PE uniforms, and PTO memberships will be available for purchase on this date. The school
supply sale will occur in a come and go fashion from 12 to 3 pm for 7th and 8th graders and
from 4 to 6 pm for 6th graders and new students (in conjunction with New Student
Orientation; see below). A KISD Food Service representative will also be available to dispense
students’ lunch pin numbers and assist with any food service account questions.
 Thursday, August 20: New Student Orientation- We invite our incoming 6th graders and new
students to come and check out their new school anytime between 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.! Tentative
schedules and locker assignments will be made available to better prepare them (6th graders and
new students only) for their first days at Kleb! We ask that you do not bring school supplies on
this day as lockers will be not be available for actual use until the second day of school.
 Monday, August 24- The First Day of School- The first day of an awesome year! Kleb will open
its doors starting at 8:00a.m. 6th graders will report to the gym, and 7th and 8th graders will
report to the cafeteria to pick up their schedule. 6th grade students will be escorted to their first
class by their first period teacher from the gym, shortly after their 6th grade welcome pep rally!
Please note that the lunch lines will be longer than normal on the first day as students get
acclimated to their lunch routine. All students will have the opportunity to eat lunch whether
they purchase a lunch at school or bring their own. Bus assignments will be posted and shared
throughout the school day (see newsletter for KISD Transfinder bus information)!
 Monday, September 7- No School- Labor Day Holiday
 Thursday, September 10- Kleb Open House- come meet your child’s teachers at Open House!
This event will start at 6:15 p.m. and will last until 8:30 p.m. Further details on Open House to
come!
 Tuesday, September 15- School Picture Day
Please contact us at 832-249-5500 if you have any questions regarding any of the above information. I
hope that you continue to enjoy your remaining weeks of summer vacation. We look forward to seeing
our Bearcubs soon!

Exiting a PreAP Course:
A student may exit Pre-AP courses at the end of the first
semester and must have teacher, parent, and
administrator approval. Students and parents should
have the benefit of knowing the semester grade before
making an exit decision. Students should consider
exiting a course at the end of the first semester if they
do not maintain at least a “C” average for the semester.
Please contact your child’s counselor prior to the start of
school if you wish to make any Pre-AP course
adjustments.

Metal Detector Letter to Parents
Dear Parents:
The Klein Independent School District has a deep concern for the safety and security of its
students and employees. To address these concerns video cameras have been installed, random
parking lot drug searches before and during the school day have been implemented, humancanine teams make regular visits to the campus, and each high school campus has full time
police officers and a parking lot monitor on duty during the school day.
As described in the student handbook, an additional procedure has been implemented to further
secure the high school and intermediate campuses. All high schools and intermediates have been
provided with hand held metal detectors, which will be used solely on a random basis. Students
in randomly selected classrooms and/or buses will be scanned using the hand held metal
detectors. Should there be an alert, students will be asked to cooperate in determining the cause
of the alert. If requested, this may be done in an area other than the classroom. Walk through
metal detectors may be used on some campuses in a similar manner.
The purpose of implementing these security measures is to prevent any student from bringing
guns or any illegal weapons into the school building. Zero tolerance of guns and illegal weapons
means that the KISD will not accept excuses. Therefore, those who possess these objects will be
arrested. Your cooperation and support are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jessica Haddox, Principal
Kleb Intermediate
