The refurbishment of the Macau Cultural Center is well underway and the renovations should be completed on
schedule this Fall. The MCC Directors are busy planning the "Grand Opening" celebration and drawing up
guidelines for the management and operation of the cultural center.
On behalf of the MCC, I would like to thank all UMA members who have made donations, and whose names will
be on a plaque in the MCC building as “Original Friends of MCC”. The list of all donors thus far is on Page 3 of
the Bulletin.
The Directors announce with regret that the MCC has suffered a setback in its investments. A significant portion of
the MCC funds was held in the Schwab Yield Plus Fund. This Fund was represented by the Schwab financial
adviser to MCC Treasurer, Maria Roliz, as a "Capital Preservation No-to-Low Risk Fund". Unfortunately, the Fund
was heavily invested in mortgage-related securities. Due to the mortgage crisis and the collapse in home prices
across the country, in March/April, the Fund suffered a 20% decline which resulted in a loss to the MCC of
$133,301.93. There is currently a class-action lawsuit against Charles Schwab for misrepresentation of the said Fund
to investors, and the MCC is part of the lawsuit. In the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that Charles Schwab, the
Fund's underwriter, and others misled the investors about the underlying risk in the Fund, including its exposure to
the sub-prime mortgage market. The Fund was not well diversified and instead was concentrated in the mortgage
industry. As is often the case with class-action suits, it could be years before the suit is settled, and the Directors will
keep you informed on the progress of this action. While the MCC has sustained a serious loss through this crisis,
over the years of its investment in the Fund, it had also received gains of over $300,000.00.
We have had no applicants for the annual UMA Scholarship of $1,000 for eligible college-bound high school
graduates. Because there may not have been sufficient time to publicize the scholarship, the Scholarship Committee
will extend the application deadline to August 15, 2008.
Amendments to the UMA Bylaws will be on the Agenda for our Annual General Meeting on November 15, 2008;
and in accordance with Article 7.4 (b) Notice of Certain Items, the proposed amendments are published on Page 4
of this Bulletin for your information. These Articles are being amended or changed for better clarity and definition,
and also to comply with amendments passed by the Board of Directors over the years since the Amended and
Restated Bylaws were adopted in 1997.
APIM and the Organizing Committee in Macau have announced that there will be a Primeiro Encontro dos Jovens
Macaenses (also known as Encontro da Nova Geração Macaense or First Youth Encontro) to be held in Macau in
July/August of 2009. Ten young adults between the ages of 18 and 35 from each Casa around the world will be
invited to attend. The organizers would welcome ideas and suggestions from the young persons of the various
Casas to assist in making this an interesting and successful Encontro for our Macanese youth. Please address your
recommendations to me as President of UMA. Further details will be forthcoming.
Our best wishes to all for a Glorious Fourth of July!

Many of our readers may be surprised to learn, that UMA had some great sport teams in the early years.
TEN-PIN BOWLING: In 1969 UMA ten-pin bowlers represented Portugal in a Round-Robin International
Tournament in San Francisco, beat five other top National teams in the Bay Area for the four feet high
trophy. In the final tally our boys beat the Philippines to win the International Round-Robin Tournament.
1969 Ten-Pin Bowling Champions (Left to Right) Bernie Santos, Ronnie Souza, Carlos ‘Perry’ Gonsalves
(Sports Convener), Fred ‘Googie’ Marques, Consul General of Portugal, Cipri das Caldas, and Phil Ferras.
In the early days ‘10-Pin In-Door Bowling’ was very popular among many UMA Members. Both men and
women competed in the local leagues. In 1969 the various leagues in the City set up an International
Tournament representing the various ethnic groups playing in their leagues.
UMA Members selected their top 5 bowlers to represent Portugal and the Consul of Portugal was invited
to the tournament. On the day of the ‘Tournament’ the Consul General was most gracious and came out to
watch and cheer the UMA team to victory. Carlos 'Perry' Gonsalves who was the Executive Vice President
of UMA, took great pride in our bowling teams and became the team Convener.
Portugal and the Philippines were the strongest teams in the competition and were evenly matched. In
the final round between Portugal & the Philippines, the fans supporting their national team were
boisterous and cheered their favorite team to victory.
The scores for each game between the finalists were very close and the organizers would not divulge the
ranking and kept the score secret. After the last game, everyone waited patiently and tried to guess which
team won. Finally, the scoring judges made their announcement, starting with the 5th runner-up, then 4th

runner-up and so forth. The air was charged with excitement as the last two teams Portugal and the
Philippines were left. Who would be the runner-up and who would be the winner?
Again after a short pause and complete quiet from the crowd, Portugal was declared the winner by a couple
of points. At the formal reception later that evening at a restaurant, the coveted 4-feet high trophy was
presented to the team of Portugal who in turn presented it to the Portuguese Consul, amid thunderous
applause from all present.
Wouldn’t it be great if the current Consul General of Portugal will present this trophy to the Macau
Cultural Center?
SOFTBALL: In 1973 UMA’s Softball Team named the ‘COUGARS’ won the San Francisco League
Summer ‘Fast-Pitch’ Championship.
Unfortunately, we do not have a picture of the players but Miguel Ferras and Robert Remedios, with the
help of some of the old timers have come up with the line-up of the original team of 1969:
Line Up of the 1969 Softball Team
Pitcher: Miguel Ferras
First Base: Robert Remedios
Second: Manuel Nunes
Third: Manuel Xavier
Short: Vic Pedruco
Left Field: Frankie Loureiro
Center: Carlos (Calau) Azevedo
Right: Rick Oliveira
Catcher: Tony Rodrigues,
Reserve: Eddie Guterres, Alfredo Madeira, Ronnie Souza
The Cougars, with several player changes, continued to play in the ‘San Francisco Park & Recreation
League’ for the ensuing years and in Spring of 1973, they took 1st Place in the ‘San Francisco Park &
Recreation Fast Pitch League’.
I understand that Marcus da Luz, with his sizzling ground ball hit into the outfield, brought in Miguel
Ferras for the winning run at home plate. Miguel Ferras was awarded the game ball with the autographs of
all the players because he was the manager, the winning pitcher, and the scorer of the winning run.
Line Up of the 1973 Softball Team Champions
Pitcher: Miguel Ferras
Left Field: Kenneth Chambers
First Base: Miguel Foegal
Center: Roy Earby
Second: Mac da Luz
Right: Mike Howard
Third: Joe Ritchie
Catcher:
Short: George Jegen
Rich Bassi
Our Cougars are the proud winners of two trophies which I am holding for the MCC.

SOCCER: Our boys loved to play soccer.
In September of 1959, they used to get together on weekends at the Beach Chalet Soccer Fields near the
ocean between the two windmills, or at the Julius Khan practice field, just off Arguello Boulevard, at the
entrance of The Presidio. We would pick sides and play against each other. There was a Russian team
called Mercury Athletic Club who also practice at these fields. Mercury Athletic Club consisted of mostly
Russian players from Shanghai and were the ex-students of the old SJA/SFX Marist schools. Our boys from
SJA knew most of these players.
One afternoon on a Saturday, Steve Nogoesco, (famous local player and now retired USF Don’s Coach),
who was studying at the University of San Francisco, happened to pass by the field and watch the guys
practice. I knew Steve from the Page Street Library where we used to bring our studies and do our
homework at the library. We got to chatting, and he mentioned having just left the USF Junior Varsity team,
which he was coaching and who had just beaten their Senior team and became the State Champions. I asked
if he could promote a friendly match between our boys and his champions. At this point, our boys had not
yet decided which local divisional league to join. Steve was more than eager to oblige. So, we decided on
the following weekend to play at the USF Campus ground on Parker & Anza Streets close to St. Ignatius
Church on Fulton. The field has since been renamed Nogoesco Stadium, in honor of Steve.
Most of our boys were keen, but most did not have proper soccer shoes, and did not have any uniforms. It
was decided that we would play in a white t-shirt and in any color shorts.
On Saturday morning we got to the field at 9.30 a.m. for the 10 o’clock game. I was most happy to see two
old friends from Shanghai. One was Mr. Ian MacFarland, who used to referee most of the main matches at
the International Sporting Club. With him was Mike Karolidge, who used to play for the “Y” Reds in
Shanghai, who was going to assist him as a linesman for this friendly game.
Our players were: Ronnie, Rudy, & Ernie Souza, Sydney & Fernando Silva, Fred Tonnochy, Fred Marques,
Cipri das Caldas, Bernie & Reggie Santos, Stanley Joaonilho, Ronnie Ozorio, Eddie & Francis Cruz,
Herbert Honniball, Mickey d’Almeida, Ron Souza, & myself Oscar Collaço. There were 8 pairs of boots
among us, and the rest played in sneakers.
The first half we held our own at one goal each. Then many of our boys began getting cramps and gasping
for air. It was earlier agreed that we could interchange as many players as needed, in order to give everyone
who turned up a chance to play. Eventually, we lost the game 5 to 3, which I thought was darn good against
the State College champions.
After this game, many of our boys decided to join the local divisional leagues. Several were good enough to
play in the first division but others who enjoyed the game and wanted to play just for the exercise, joined
the second and third divisions.
UMA SOCCER TEAM FORMED(1973):
As new immigrants arrived from Brazil, Lorenco Marques, Portugal, & Macau, the younger and fitter
members of this group came to see me to ask if UMA would consider sponsoring a soccer team to play
under the UMA Banner. The local leagues were completely full, so enquiries were made in the North Bay,
and UMA joined the Mayflower League up north. There were eight teams: 3 British, a Greek, a Swedish, a
Jewish, and a team from the Army at Fort Baker. UMA made it eight. The format was to play a double
round-robin. In 1973, UMA came close to winning the trophy and ended up in second place.

In 1974 UMA’s Soccer Team took the North Bay Area League Championship by winning each and every
game. Our players were all heart. Below is a photo of the victorious champions.
Back: Humberto Collaço (Manager), Oscar Collaço (Coach), Jose Roliz, Miguel d’Almeida, Bill Rodrigues, Andy
Bolton, Gerald Roliz, Miguel Roliz (Captain), Tony Rodrigues.
Front: Eloy Morgado, Dave James, Jaime Collaço, Jose Collaço, Rick Oliveira.
From time-to-time, the following also played for UMA: Raimundo ‘Zamora’ Jorge, Victor ‘Junior’ Ribeiro, Ian
James, Francisco & Pedro Roliz, George & Joseph Rodrigues, Patrick Daly, Pedro Jesse, & Mike Souza, and some I
cannot remember.
Girls Field Hockey: UMA also attempted to field a girl’s hockey team in 1959. Unfortunately, the only
girl’s hockey teams known in the Bay Area were at U.C. Berkeley and at Stanford University at Palo Alto.
There were no facilities within the City. In any event, John Gonsalves and myself (Oscar Collaco) made an
endeavor to recruit from our community and the following showed some interest: Evelyn (Cotton) Collaco,
Mira (d’Almeida) das Caldas, Marcella Collaco, Regina Barradas, Brenda Remedios, and several others.
Two practices were held at the Crocker Amazon Playing Field on Geneva Avenue. We couldn’t even get 10
girls, so after the second practice, we decided to drop the idea of fielding a girl’s hockey team.
Acknowledgement
We, M. Lourdes, M. Helena, and John Gonsalves, wish to gratefully acknowledge our dear friends and
relatives for their kind expressions of sympathy, prayers, masses, telephone calls, and attendance at the
Memorial Mass for our beloved mother, Olga Gonsalves.

Early Macanese Immigrants
By Tess Duarte Zaklan
Fernando Antonio Do Rosario, his wife, Emilia Xavier Do Rosario, their six daughters: Alice, Delsa,
Therese, Dulce, Daline Do Rosario, and Beatrice Do Rosario Duarte, their son-in-law, Ralph Duarte,
and their grandson, Fernan (Fred) Duarte, arrived in San Pedro on May 2, 1945 aboard the US transport,
SS Admiral Eberle. They departed from Manila, P.I. April 10, 1945 as British /Portuguese citizens per
General McArthur's orders following his return to Manila to liberate the Philippines.
Fernando, Emilia and their daughters were all born in Hong Kong. (Emilia Xavier Do Rosario's father,
Lisbello Xavier, was one of the founders of The Hong Kong Printing Press Company.)
The families settled in San Pedro, CA, two weeks after their arrival. They obtained jobs, became US
citizens, and prospered. Their extended family now numbers in the 60's at this time. Fernando along
with his son-in-law, Ralph Duarte, remembered their Macanese roots and eagerly welcomed the new
emigrants to the US. Whenever possible, they offered their assistance and helped them find jobs, homes,
and sponsored many for citizenship. Fernando and Ralph were recognized in the local newspapers for
sponsoring over 50 new citizens.
In 1980, Ralph Duarte, a Spaniard born in the Philippines, was approached by Gloria and Guido
Sequeria, then officers of the Southern California UMA Chapter, to become its President. Ralph
accepted the position and served for two terms. At the time of his first presidency, membership in
UMA's Southern California Chapter numbered in the forties. As he, along with his father-in-law
Fernando Do Rosario, were acquainted with the many local Macanese, Ralph was able to organize a
general meeting of these residents. Close to two hundred Macanese attended this meeting. They were
informed about and encouraged to join the local UMA chapter. Within two months, the UMA roster in
Southern California jumped to 192 members. Ralph went on to serve, throughout the years, again as
president, as well as various other positions within UMA.
My father, Ralph Duarte, is currently suffering from terminal cancer. All prayers would be appreciated
and welcomed.

Yolanda (Silva) McCargar – 70th Birthday Celebration
As recollected by Gaby Sarrazolla, proud sister!
Beautiful Child!
Beautiful Woman!
It was a blistering hot day (100 degrees!!) on Saturday, May 17th for the birthday bash for Yolanda held at the
Lake Park Brea Club House at 4:30 pm for family and friends. It was hosted by sisters, Judy, May and Gaby.
Daughter, Karen, was the right hand and an important part of the planning. Daughter, Laurie, surprised Yolanda
with her presence (from Idaho) and a beautiful, delicious birthday cake.
What a celebration of life it was as there was love all around and from all walks of her life - friends from the
Brea community, ping pong club members, church group members from PALS, Cursillo friends, neighbors,
friends and of course, her family. Unfortunately, sons, Steven and Danny and their family from Folsom couldn’t
make this event; but we all felt their spirit with us and we sure missed them.
Far away cousins, Aurea and Ken Meyer from Canada, Roberto Roliz (who was the pro photographer) from San
Francisco, along with other cousins, Vasco Collaço from Palm Springs, Bosco Collaço, and Jaime Collaço all
came to help celebrate this happy occasion. Good friend, Sheila Ribeiro came from San Francisco and was a
great help.
There was plenty of food. The appetizers were a great variety contributed by friends. The dinner of Chicken
Alfredo Pasta, salad, and roll was delicious and enjoyed by all. Son, Jeff, along with Nephew David McCargar
were in the kitchen helping. The waiters were Riley (Gaby’s 8 yr. old grandson), Brennen (Gaby’s 12 yr. old
grandson) and Kyle (Judy’s 8 yr. old grandson) and were supervised by Lisa and Jill (Judy’s daughters).
Actually, so many were helping that it would take this whole page to name them all. All this was orchestrated by
Judy with Gaby, Aurea, Sheila and the others just following her commands. It was wonderful to see such
teamwork and all done with such great love for Yolanda.
A wonderful video presentation of Yolanda’s life was prepared by our very own, Mark (Judy’s son) who did
such a tremendous job with the pictures and music background. We had entertainment by her granddaughter,
Bella (age 5), who did a Hannah Montana song “You’re One in a Million” which could make Hannah nervous as
Bella just was such a pro! Yolanda gave a “short” long speech of thanks to include everyone that made a
difference in her life. After that, sisters, Judy and Gaby, sang “Sisters” to Yolanda. I must say, we did quite a
good job too and sounded unbelievably great!
Well, to make a long story short, fun was had by all and most of all, God’s love along with the love in the room
could certainly be felt.
We wish Yolanda many more years to come and congratulate her on another milestone!
Muito Parabens and we love you!

All Day Social: On Monday, June 16, 2008, sixty-nine members and friends attended our Social.
The players started to arrive about 9:30 A.M. to set up their mahjong tables, poker tables and Mexican train
places. They all looked so enthused and ready to begin the day.
We had a day planned to provide them with four meals; breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. What fun the kitchen
helpers and servers had. I wish to thank the following people for their help; without them this event would be a
difficult task: My wife, Maureen Xavier and aunt, Rita Ribeiro; Mildred and Bernard Brown; Ray Xavier;
Horatio Carion; Branda Pedruco; Tila Danenberg; Barbara and Bernard Vas; Margie, Gabby and Sidney Shaw;
Jack Ferras; Marie Machado; Nice and Johnny Marques and Al Madeira. Hopefully, I did not miss anyone. All
of these people have helped us at all the socials, and we’re very grateful for their help. Maureen and Rita are the
ones that do all the shopping and ordering of foods, food preparation, set-up and cleaning up for this event.
Mildred is responsible for getting the water and coffee ready before the people arrive and also setting up and
cleaning up of the hall and, of course, our Treasurer, Bernard Brown, who helps me unload and load the van, setup the hall and pay the bills; Tila Danenberg for helping with the registration and helping in the kitchen. The rest
of the people make themselves available to us and assists us with all of the above. Branda, Maureen extends her
sincere appreciation for keeping her company and doing all the preparation of the foods in the kitchen; you made
it a lot of fun for her. Yes, you’re much faster in cutting the bread and spreading the cheese!

To Our Dear Members – From Maria F. Gomes, President
On April 19th, we had another very successful Tarde. The attendees were delightful and really knew how to have
fun! The party of course had to start with the delicious Macanese Chilicote made by Katherine Orescan. The fun
group of individuals then enjoyed the delicious dinner: Mimi de Britto’s Brisket of Beef Curry; Jean Xavier’s
Minchee; Katherine Orescan’s Saffron Chicken; Joe and Maria Perpetuo’s Fancy Mixed Vegetables; and good
old steaming hot rice made by Daniel Gomes.

to enjoy the desserts on the beautifully presented dessert trays prepared by Jean Xavier and her dessert team that
included Doris da Silva, Terri da Silva, Geri Piglowski, Maria Gomes, Manuela Sequeira, and Lourdes
Remedios. Then more dancing and socializing, followed by an auction of donated prizes. There was an oil
painting donated and painted by Leonel D’Aquino, two beautiful Bonzai’s and an oriental garden lamp donated
by our Bonzai expert Lawrence Gill, and a numbered and hand-signed print of Hong Kong by Gustavo da Roza.
After the very successful auction we had the usual lottery with the grand prize of $200 which was won by none
other than our State Board President, Raquel Remedios. The party was a great success because of the lovely and
cheerful people present, and the wonderful helpers who made it possible. These helpers include all the above

Chapter Meeting on May 31
We welcomed our out-of-town members Joy & Neil Xavier from Henderson, Nv. They had volunteered to Chair
a fund-raising campaign for the Macau Cultural Center to request donations from our Chapter members. The
MCC is a project they strongly support. Joy reported that the response from our Chapter members has been
generous. Donations received to date have been forwarded to the MCC and as future donations are received, they
will also be sent to the MCC. Our sincere thanks to Joy & Neil for their work on this worthy project.
Parabens to Delano Pereira and Terence Pomeroy on their birthdays! How many years???
There was some discussion at this meeting regarding the new member application fee and the
reinstatement fee for delinquent members. Please be reminded that at the Annual General Meeting
on Nov. 15, 2003, a motion was unanimously approved to be effective on April 1, 2004 as follows:
”Implement an application fee for all new members, and that delinquent members be considered new members if
they reapplied after the final past due date for receipt of membership fees on March 31 of each year. This fee
will be $10 in addition to the regular membership fee.”
We always welcome new members so please contact Leda Pomeroy for New Member Applications.
May 31 “Paella” Demonstration
by Gloria Sequeira
The 30 members who showed up at this meeting were treated to a delicious Paella dinner prepared
by our Iron Chef, Leda Pomeroy, following the meeting. It was one of the best Paellas I have ever
eaten with tender chunks of chicken, large prawns, Portuguese linquisa and fresh mussels. A tossed
green salad accompanied the meal and for dessert we had a mixed fresh fruit compote and Haagen Daz
ice cream. To complete the sumptuous meal, we were served SANGRIA. Needless to say, we had a
very “happy” afternoon. The sous chefs who assisted Leda were Rita Guterres, Joe & Sally Carchidi,
and Terence Pomeroy.
At the end of the meal, Leda gave us all copies of her recipe and explained how all the meats should
be cooked and when to add all the seasonings. It was very informative especially all her little cooking
tips. It was really nice of Leda to do all this cooking and we do appreciate it.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped with the clean up, and special thanks to Rita Guterres,
Alda Gosano and Mercia Poirier for washing all the pots and pans! Great teamwork and we do
appreciate your help.

A Day At The Casino
By Rita Guterres
The celestial stars were aligned exactly right, our horoscope read financial success for all, our
bio-rhythm readings were "high", so on Sunday, April 27, the So. Calif. Chapter members went to
San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino in Highland, approximately 1-1/2 hours drive from Downey,
to try our luck!!
San Manuel 's Bingo Parlor is renowned for its big prizes - $3,000 for the lucky winner. Unfortunately,
no So. Calif. Chapter member hit the big one (We must fire our astrologer). Most of us played the slots some came home richer but, by and large, the majority returned with lighter wallets. Despite this, all
returned home with memories of a happy day spent with friends.
Thank you, Gloria Sequeira, for organizing this enjoyable event for the So. Calif. Chapter members.
CORRECTION
In the December Issue of the UMA Bulletin under Community Interest, we erroneously reported
that “Rich Remedios is the son of the late Anita (Ferras) Remedios”. This should be corrected to
read "Rich Remedios is the son of the late Anne (Ferras) Remedios”.
We regret the error and apologize to Vincent Remedios & family for this mistake.

Bowling, Bowling, Bowling – Nothing But! The Bay Area lawn bowlers were all rearing to go by the time
Opening Day rolled around, and maybe even before! 2008’s Opening Day was held on March 29th at the
Rossmoor Lawn Bowls Club. Would you believe there were 126 avid bowlers from the various bowling clubs in
the Pacific Intermountain Division (PIMD) – wow?!
The day turned out to be very comfortable for bowling, a little overcast but not windy. With a hot cup of
tea/coffee and some breakfast pastries, the bowlers were eager to start. Two games were played, one in the
morning and one in the afternoon, with prizes for bowlers on each green and for each game. The winners are too
many to mention but there’s no doubt, whether they won or lost, everyone had a wonderful day of bowling to
welcome the 2008 season.
There are many tournaments under the PIMD schedule of events as well as each club’s own events. The PIMD
event on the calendar in April (26th) was the Women’s Fives, meaning 5 women band together as a team. Two
games are played, one in the morning where four women from the team will play a Fours game, with the 5th
playing a singles game, whereas in the afternoon, three women play in a Triples game and two play a Pairs game.
Placing third was the women’s team of Reggie Banares, Pat Guterres, Sandy Souza, Micki Remedios and Pauline
de Assis.
The time has arrived for the US Play downs consisting of three weekends of Pairs games in June played at
Rossmoor and two July weekends of Singles games to be played in Oakland. Thus far, the women’s Pairs results
are already in as there were only 4 women’s teams. The winners again this year are Sandy Souza and Marie
Guterres. Sandy has competed and won in four consecutive years and Marie in two. The men’s Pairs are still
ongoing and the results will be after the round robin games (the 6 qualifying teams out of 12 teams meet and play
all five teams on Sunday, June 15th and the following weekend, June 21-22nd. The winners of the Play downs will
then compete in October in Sun City, Arizona against the winners of the other Divisions, e.g., South Central
Division, Northeast Division, etc.
This year the Pacific Intermountain Division is also hosting the 2008 National Open in September where bowlers
from across the nation will arrive in the Bay Area to compete for 6 days in men and women’s Singles, Pairs and
Fours games. Due to the large numbers expected the games will be played at several clubs’ greens, namely San
Francisco, Oakland and Rossmoor. Being the hosts for the games, the events should be particularly interesting
and fun, and bowlers are lining up or have already lined up team mates for these games.
Rossmoor Lawn Bowls Club tournaments invite many skilled as well as the not so skilled bowlers to the greens
on tournament days. Worthy of mention was the Men and Women’s Championship Triples held on May 27- 29.
In second place for the women was the team of Sandy Souza, Pauline de Assis and Pat Guterres (skip, vice and
lead, respectively). The team of Lucy Guterres, Suzie Eriksen and Gerri Sequeira came in third. For the men,
first place went to the team of Robert Remedios, Lionel Guterres and John Monteiro against the finals team of Ed
de Assis, Bill Lee and Bob Lewis. Only recently completed was the Pairs Championship tournament held on
June 3-5. The runners up for the women team were Sandy Souza and Suzie Eriksen. As for the men, the
champions were Ed Guterres and Miguel Roliz who beat Ed de Assis and Rick Oliveira.
Please Note: Bowlers and guests, mark your calendars for San Mateo Chapter’s annual Mixed Triples
Tournament on Sunday, August 24th at Rossmoor for a fun day of bowling and BBQ dinner. For info. call
Sandy Souza 925-256-0307.
Welcome to our new members: We are happy to announce San Mateo Chapter's new members, namely,
Elfrida Gaan, Maria Carreiro, Paul Carion, Collette and Lizette D'Almeida, Leonardo and Jacqueline Gutierrez.
We heartily welcome you to our chapter and look forward to seeing you at upcoming events.

Alda Alberta Alves Tavares
Eulogy - delivered by Joan
Alda was my Dad’s Best Friend, his lover and his wife. Our mother, our buddy, our partner in shopping. Grandma to
Caroline, Andrew, Michelle, Joe, Anthony, Chris, Matthew, and Daniel.
Mom was the best, our husbands couldn’t have asked for a better mother-in-law or our children, a greater grandmother. If you
know Mom like we know Mom you knew that her heart was everywhere just like all the hearts “left in San Francisco”. Where
there is a heart, Mom is there. No matter what you did, no matter how you felt, Mom always knew when you needed her.
In my last years with Mom, I enjoyed every minute of what she wanted to do. I’d come over and I could tell she was ready to
go. Her purse was downstairs; she had makeup on and an agenda for the afternoon. We would go out to her favorite places
that she would frequent; McDonald’s for French fries, Wal-Mart for Pepperidge Farm cookies (Dad always needed cookies).
She would be buying something and get sidetracked by wanting to buy something either for Cathie, Val, Caroline, Michelle or
me. We would go to Wells Fargo Bank for money, Trader Joe’s for bananas, and her Kung Pao Chicken at Panda. If she
wasn’t feeling well, we’d watch the soap operas with Dad. Uncle Vincent would visit us occasionally for afternoon tea. We
even enjoyed exercising together with Mary Wilson from the Sit and Be Fit program. She enjoyed going out to eat at Sushi
House, that Cambodian place, China Gourmet, trips to Chinatown on our way home from the doctor’s office, she would
always keep in touch with friends by calling them. She will miss Uncle Alex’s routine phone calls on Tuesdays and Fridays to
his beloved sister.
Mom loved to travel. She and Dad went to Hongkong and Macau several times. Her greatest joy was playing tour guide when
she accompanied my sisters and John. She’s been all over the world. She’s stood on the Great Wall of China, prayed in the
Vatican, feasted with the Maori Indians in Australia, marveled at Stonehenge in England, visited the shrine at Fatima, and
cruised the Caribbean.
Mom and Dad moved to Alameda in 1985 after they retired to take care of Cathie’s children. Her grandchildren were a huge
part of her life. She would think nothing of going to San Francisco or Fresno to help out with the grandchildren. Each baby
was always special to her and she would faun over each one. Christmas and Easter were always very special and she made
them extra special. She always had treats for all the kids you know. Fruit roll ups! She even gave them to the children that
delivered her meals-on-wheels daily. I remember so vividly her excitement when Mom played cards at our parties. We will
always remember the Chillicothe and the jook after midnight masses on Christmas day.
She and Dad enjoyed going to the racetrack and she was always lucky. Every once in a while she would win big and she
would share her winnings by taking us all out to a great dinner. She’d always slipped a couple of bucks to the grandchildren
and told them not to tell us. I remembered how worried we were when Mom got lost on one of the UMA trips to Reno. Lost! I
don’t think so. My Mom was never lost! While we were searching for her, checking the hospitals and even resorted to faxing
her picture to the Hilton security people, she found another group and hitched a ride back to San Francisco. She called at
about 7 that night at the BART station for us to pick her up like nothing had ever happened.
Mom always wanted the best for us. She always encouraged us to work hard and to explore new avenues. She inspired us to
dream to be more. She was very proud of Cathie’s MBA and Valerie’s MD. When Cathie wanted to move to LA after her
college graduation, Dad was not able to let go of his little girl yet, but mom wanted her to spread those wings and find what
life was all about. Mom knew Cathie should follow her bliss and she did.
Marriage was very sacred to her. I think the happiest days of her life were our wedding days. She loved John, Larry and
Richard deeply.
These memories and all the memories of her that we hold dear in our hearts will help us through her passing. Our biggest
reward in our lives is having a mom like Alda.
On behalf of our family, my Dad and all of us, we would like to thank everyone for all your support through this special time
remembering Mom. She loves you as you love her.

GRITO DO CORACAO
Eulogy delivered by Pinky da Silva
Dear Cissy,
We are a large family, father, mother, and seven boys and seven girls. Following upon an old Macanese
tradition Mama designated you, her second daughter, to be the “Mae de casa” (one in charge of running the
household) and to “criar Pinky” (to raise Pinky). You never married but in actuality you became a substitute
mother to me fulfilling a lifetime deed.
Before The War we lived at Jordan Road Building in Kowloon. Here are some happy shared moments, your
taking me in hand to the stretch of sidewalk by Diocesan Girl School to teach me to roller skate, your preparing
the Consoada Supper for the “Missa de Galo de Natal”, your overseeing yearly the big da Silva clan Christmas
dinner with some 25 or so persons attending, your preparing the “Presunto de Natal” (Christmas salted ham with
cloves), your perfectly controlling the fire on the Chinese old-style clay “fung lo” stove to prepare the must have
Familia Impadas de Natal, your placing glowing charcoal on the round flat cover of the cooking pan to produce
your perfect Bebinga de Ovos which must have some charred top. Macanese cooks today have it easy with
controlled temperature settings with their gas stove ovens. I remember your churning by hand the cream and milk
in the ice-cream mixer to make home-made ice cream, vanilla flavor only. You were indeed the Mae de Casa de
Familia.
There was a terrifying moment in your life during The War when as an Auxiliary Nursing Service nurse with
your sisters Irene and Aida and some Macanese women you were all posted at the Maryknoll School nursing aid
station. Japanese soldiers arrived on the scene. Fortunately ranking medical officers accompanying them dutifully
posted a sentry and secured the safety of all the ANS nurses until the cessation of the fighting. That incident was
indeed a close call in your life.
On coming to San Francisco in 1956 you worked for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation of
California until your retirement 20 years later. You had your special memorable times. In the mid-1960s you,
niece Dilna Victor and I went on a car camping trip from San Francisco to Victoria, Canada. Throughout the trip
we sang “Domani” (Tomorrow) from the theme song of the movie “The Yellow Rolls Royce”. We camped under
a tent overnight and enjoyed the day at Multnomah Falls State Park in Oregon. You really enjoyed the vehicular
ferry ride from Port Angeles, Washington to Victoria B.C. and to visit brother Afit & wife Nenita. There you had
your long sought- after “English pork pies” quite like those sold at Dairy Farm Confectionary in Kowloon.
Cissy you always placed the interests of the family first. You especially bonded with Bill. The three of us
made a special threesome within the family. The friends you had were very, very close ones, Cita Barreto , Marie
Xavier, and Betty Rozario. You found solace and delight over the years sitting by the window tending to a canary
or budgie in a cage and watching passers-by. This happy trait of yours was made so much easier for me to care
for you when in the last few years you were effectively housebound.
During a lucid moment in your dying days at Saint Mary Medical Center you motioned to me and whispered,
“This place is terrible, I want to go home”. I have acceded to your final request. Your precious ashes are now
terrestrially with me at home, your soul is in God’s celestial home.
Earlier before you died you received the last sacrament, Extreme Unction. I was present with you at the very
last moment of your life. After you died I had a special private Holy Mass celebrated in a private chapel, just for
you. On June 17th 2008, your birthday, your favorite nephew Manuel Victor and I honored you with a
posthumous dawn Mass at namesake Saint Cecilia Church. I could do no less for you, Cissy.
On the Final Day of Judgment all the Saints shall muster before God. I end this Grito do Coracao (Cry of the
Heart) to sing in Macanese the triumphant “When the Saints Go Marching In”.
Quelora Santos vai pa Ceu,
quelora Santos vai pa Ceu,
osse logo vai juntado,
quelora Santos vai pa Ceu!
CISSY, YOU GO GIRL!
With love, affection, pride, and thanks, Pinky

was also a loved member of the extended family of Aunts and Uncles, and many cousins of both the large
d’Aquino and Ozorio clans. His sister and nephew extend their heartfelt thanks for the visits, the gifts, the
