Monday, August 12th is the ARES, SATERN meeting at The Salvation Army Corps,
420 Santa Fe, Olathe, KS at 7pm.
Dusty Davis, EDS Volunteer, receiving a Certificate of Appreciation in
thanks for Dusty's work related to the SATERN Communications Vehicle
Project. The award was presented to Dusty Davis with Emergency Disaster
Services Staff in attendance on Friday, July 12, 2013 by Rich Britain.
“Safe From Harm” Training:
Safe from Harm: The Salvation mandates that ALL staff and volunteers complete the Safe
from Harm training. This training will identify common disaster scenarios in which
vulnerable person(s) could be harmed. It describes strategies to keep a vulnerable person safe
in an emergency environment and it will show how staff and volunteers can be protected
against unfounded allegations. No National Salvation Army ID badge will be given to a
person unless they have completed the Introduction to Salvation Army Disaster Services and
the Safe from Harm training and have a completed volunteer packet on file with approved
background check.
Editor’s note: “Safe From Harm” training is most applicable to all volunteer activities. Dee Smith presents a
clear, interesting session with participant interaction invited. The Critical Incident Stress Management CISM is
at the core. Watch for training opportunities.
The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services 2013 responses…
The Salvation Army EDS Philadelphia, PA building collapse Wednesday, June
5th
Emergency Disaster Services crews of The Salvation Army are serving first
responders on the scene of the Philadelphia building collapse with food and
hydration as emergency efforts continue.
The building, located at 22nd and Market Street in downtown Philadelphia, collapsed
this morning onto The Salvation Army Family Store located next door. As of 1:00
p.m., two people remained trapped under rubble while twelve others were taken to
area hospitals with injuries, according to CNN.
“Our number one concern is for the safety of our customers and the employees who were involved,” said Major
John Cranford of The Salvation Army of Philadelphia. “We are coordinating with the Police and Fire
Department and local authorities. We ask for the public to pray for those involved.”

The Salvation Army EDS Flight 214 crash response Saturday, July 6th
The Salvation Army is providing aid and support to survivors, responders and affected
families from Saturday morning’s crash-landing of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 at San
Francisco International Airport, which claimed the lives two people and injured nearly 200
others. The Boeing 777 jetliner carried 307 passengers from Seoul, South Korea. Two teams

The Salvation Army EDS Respondes to Lac-Mégantic, Quebec train derailing
Saturday, July 6th
The Salvation Army is responding after a train derailed in Lac-Mégantic,
Que., on Saturday, causing the deaths of five people and forcing 1,000
people from their homes.
A team of volunteers from the Sherbrooke Salvation Army, along with
Major Brian Venables, divisional commander, Quebec Division, and
Lieutenant Wayne Knight, divisional emergency and disaster services director, are onsite providing practical and
spiritual care. An emergency disaster services Community Response Unit has been deployed to deliver supplies,
including water, coffee, snacks and blankets.
“We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to all those that have been affected by the rail catastrophe at LacMégantic,” says Esteban Bongiovanni, director of marketing and communications, Quebec Division.

May 19, 2013 - Oklahoma City, OK - Even as storms continue to hammer the region, The Salvation Army is in
contact with Emergency Managers across Oklahoma and has a presence at the State Emergency Operations
Center. The Arkansas-Oklahoma (AOK) Division has placed all disaster response teams and mobile feeding units
(canteens) across the division on stand-by for the next 48 hours.
Multiple locations in Oklahoma have sustained damage due to high winds, tornadoes, and hail which began a
little after 4 PM Central Time this afternoon. It is the beginning of a very active 24 - 48 hours for much of our
division.
Tornado warnings are currently underway in several counties in Oklahoma. The Salvation Army will be
prepared to provide care and compassion to those affected by storms as well as providing food and
hydration. Please pray for all of those affected by storms today across multiple states in the Central United
States.
Oklahomans are strong, but their strength is being tested yet again. Last night, severe rainfall caused flooding
while at the same time multiple tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma, impacting areas near Moore, OK –
including El Reno, 25 miles west of Oklahoma City. Though the storms were not as strong as those seen on May
20, yesterday’s storms resulted in five tornadoes in Oklahoma and Missouri, and killed nine people.
The Salvation Army is there, on site to provide not only food, hydration,
and clean-up supplies, but also emotional and spiritual care to first
responders and survivors. Time and again, The Salvation Army has seen
firsthand the importance of meeting the needs of the body and the soul, and
meeting each helps provide the strength people need to move forward after
the storm has passed. Notably, Salvation Army emotional and spiritual care
teams provided counseling to more than 5,500 people since the Moore, OK
tornado on May 20.
Currently, The Salvation Army is mobilizing resources to the areas affected
by tornadoes and flash flooding. Local units have had operations up and
running to serve those affected since 7:00 this morning. While teams
mobilize, damage assessment is a top priority for units on the ground which
will allow response teams to determine where the greatest need is.
“The Salvation Army is deeply grateful for all donated disaster supplies,” said Major Thomas Louden, The
Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services Incident Commander in Oklahoma and will lead the team of
Salvation Army personnel to service people in need. “Our most critical need is for monetary donations and The
Salvation Army will most certainly notify the public if there is a need for any donations of material.”
Major Louden is also no stranger to helping Oklahomans. He served in the community after the Oklahoma City
Bombing and the May 3, 1999 tornado, which was an F5.
Overall The Salvation Army has called in 150 volunteers, plus 100 staff and officers to respond to the current
storms. The Salvation Army is 250 strong on the ground, which includes 18 emotional and spiritual caregivers, as
well as 30 emergency disaster support staff manning the canteens throughout the area. Ten additional staff are
located at various distribution centers and Multiple Agency Resource Centers (MARCs).
Salvation Army personnel will be onsite providing these support services to all for as long as the need exists
following these storms in Oklahoma.

The Salvation Army EDS response to Chicago area flooding
Chicago, IL (April 18, 2013) - The Salvation Army is responding to storms that have created severe flooding in
many Chicago neighborhoods and suburban communities.
An Emergency Disaster Services mobile canteen and crew from The Salvation Army Metropolitan Division is in
the Albany Park community of Chicago at the Eugene Park Field House at 5100 N. Ridgeway serving food and
hydration to approximately 150 first responders and emergency personnel responding to the flooding.
Two additional canteens are on stand-by for immediate dispatch awaiting further requests from either the City
Incident Command Center or suburban Emergency Management agencies.
