Message from the Premier
Spectacular growth in Queensland aviation and aerospace industries is an important
success story in the Smart State vision.
Far North Queensland is playing a vital role in these industries and I commend the
collaborative approach developed by the Australasian Aviation Group Cairns.
The industries have attracted acclaim for excellence in many areas, including
advanced maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities, as well as world-class education
and training, leading-edge logistics and research and development.
Since 1998, 6,000 new jobs have been created in this sector as Queensland builds and
consolidates its position as the aviation hub of the Asia-Pacific.
Cairns has been a key part of this success story, with the gross value of aviation in
Tropical North Queensland at over $500 million, and the industry providing more than
2,700 jobs.
In terms of global reach, Cairns International Airport is Australia's fifth busiest, with 3.5
million passengers and 130,000 aircraft movements a year.
Last October I had the pleasure of opening the $7.6 million Hawker Pacific engineering
and maintenance facility at Cairns International Airport.
This world's best-practice facility can accommodate a wide range of passenger jets
including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s, while its line maintenance and overnight
check support operations on-tarmac can cater for wide body Boeing 767 and Airbus
A330 aircraft.
Cairns is also making its mark in aviation education.
The Cairns Aviation Skills Centre is the premier regional
training centre for aircraft engineers and other aviationrelated fields. The Queensland Government recently
committed $15 million to the centre's training
provider, Aviation Australia, to help train more
skilled workers.
The Queensland Government is proud to
support and encourage the development of
these industries in Cairns.

Queensland's aviation industry with regional aero-spaces
strategically located throughout the vast state of Queensland.
Innisfail
The Innisfail Aerodrome is approximately 90km south of Cairns. The facility consists of
two runways, sealed and grassed with associated services. The sealed runway has
electric lighting to cater for 24 hour and emergency operations. Innisfail Aerodrome is
primarily utilised by single and twin engine aircraft with a maximum take-off mass of
less than 5700kg.
The Aerodrome supports the following:
• Fixed wing and helicopter maintenance and agricultural spraying
• Charter operations including tourist operators
• Military operations
• Flying training
• Recreational aircraft maintenance and instruction

The general aviation lease opportunities surrounding the Innisfail Aerodrome are
significant with a number of hangars and additional land available. Innisfail has an
extensive and innovative engineering capability developed through the servicing of
the region's sugar and banana industries. It is also a burgeoning tourist destination
renowned for its art deco buildings.
Mareeba
The Mareeba Aerodrome is located approximately 64km south west of Cairns. The
aerodrome currently supports a range of general aviation businesses which service
clients across northern Australia and PNG. The aerodrome is emerging as a major
regional centre in north Queensland's fast growing general aviation industry.
The aerodrome has a 1505 metre long sealed runway equipped for night operations.
Due to increasing demand, Mareeba Shire Council is developing additional land at the

industry as an ideal conference and meeting centre with regular clients including the
Cairns Port Authority, Education Queensland and Australian Customs.
Cairns International Airport
The Cairns International Airport is owned and operated by the Cairns Port Authority
(CPA), a Queensland Government owned Corporation. The airport plays a very
important role in the region and is a major stakeholder in developing Tropical North
Queensland's tourism industry. In 2003/04, Cummings Economics estimated the total
value added to the regional economy by the Cairns International Airport is $2 billion.
Estimated foreign exchange generated in the region is more than $1,130 million
through the international operations of airlines, international tourism and other
exports of goods and services. Cairns International Airport is Australia's largest
regional airport, 5th busiest international and 6th busiest airport in Australia.
CPA is now in the process of delivering new and enhanced facilities at the International
Terminal and recently completed work on an additional concourse and aerobridge,
two additional aircraft parking positions and a significant expansion of the Baggage
Reclaim and Customs Hall area. Over the next two years CPA will expand the Domestic
Terminal to meet the projected growth in the domestic network. The expansion will
see common check-in and baggage reclaim areas developed within the terminals and
also enhanced passenger facilities in the central shopping areas. Combined with the
expansion of both terminals, an improvement of all access provisions for ground
transport will be implemented.
General Aviation (GA)
The airport is home to a large and active general aviation industry. There have been a
number of important developments in the GA precinct in recent years, including the
establishment of the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre and the new heavy aircraft
maintenance facility by Hawker Pacific.
In consultation with a wide range of industry participants, CPA is developing a GA
Precinct Plan that will provide a sound basis for investment and decision making for
both CPA and GA clients. As part of the plan, CPA will be assessing the suitability and
feasibility of a Multi Use Facility in the GA Precinct. This facility would be multidimensional, and will accommodate:
•
CPA aviation historical display
•
Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitors Centre;
•
Viewing Deck;
•
Café/Bar;
•
Common Use GA Terminal; and
