Message from the Executive Director
It gives me great pleasure to announce that we are in the process of purchasing a
building in Plymouth Industrial Park which will give us much needed GROWING
space. Our new building will be approximately 12,000 square feet and will house our
Employment division, Shared Living Program ,Adult Family Care Program, Family
Support Division including our Family Support Center as well as the Administrative
offices. This is a very exciting event for our Agency as we prepare for our continued
growth. Over the past five years we have strived to build strong relationships with
all of our stakeholders . This has created a trust that has allowed us to grow steadily
over the past three years. In 2009, after significant cuts to Family Support, our
budget was 1.2 million dollars. Today, in 2013, we are approaching $4 million in services. This
growth is a testament to the people I work with everyday.
We have shown that we are an Agency committed to quality services and value our place in the community. We
have a vision of continued growth which includes developing our Family Support Center into a true Community
Center ,open to people in all walks of life. Our plan is to expand not only our physical space, but also the many
wonderful services we offer . Hopefully in the near future, we will be sending notices to all of you of our impending move. Please join us in our future growth. Come and grow with us!
Roger Monty, Executive Director

Healthy Lifestyles Eight
Week Class Completed
by Robin Gersten
Our first Healthy Lifestyles class
just ended here at The Arc. We had
seven active participants who really
enjoyed themselves throughout the
8 week program. We learned about
exercise, healthy eating, emotional
health and taking care of our bodies. Several guest speakers came
into the class, including a dental
hygienist, personal trainer, massage
therapist and relationship expert.
We also sampled many new, healthy
foods and planned a healthy menu
for our final banquet. Participants left armed with per-
sonal goals, a pedometer to keep track of walking, as
well as a folder full of handouts to help remind them of
all they learned!
Some quotes from our participants:
Tina said: “My favorite part of the Healthy Lifestyles class was learning how to eat right and setting up goals for myself. My goal is to
walk my next door neighbor’s dog Sadie every Friday afternoon”.
Maggie said: “My favorite part of the class was being the assistant.” Maggie, along with Linda Freeman, from our AFC program
were trained to be facilitators and teamed up to present this session of Healthy Lifestyles.
Eric said: “My favorite part of the class was the food! I also like that
Maggie and I are now going to the gym and I like the “ Rock Your
Body” class.
Erin said: “I like that my Mom is cooking healthy. I also walk the
mall with my Mom, sister and niece. I learned healthy eating is
good for you!”
A Visit with Senator Murray
On April 29th the Family Support Center welcomed Senate President Therese Murray, to speak with over 25
parents and some of their young adult children and discuss Transition/Turning 22.
Senator Murray was previously presented with some of the most common questions and concerns voiced by
parents and professionals concerning the Transition process, housing, vocational opportunities, and transportation. She began the evening by addressing those concerns but the majority of our time together became a casual
exchange of experiences, comments and ideas. She was very attentive, taking notes and once again reaffirming
her commitment to support people with developmental disabilities.
The parents who attended were wonderful advocates whose comments and questions were enlightening for all. In
particular, our thanks to Mr. Collins, who reminded us all that the most significant change needed, is that those we
serve are valued and given every opportunity to grow to their FULL potential and not given a job
simply because no one else will do it.
We thank Senator Murray for visiting The Arc office once again, listening to our families and sharing her expertise.
Roots and Wings…Life after TransitionA Family Support Center Series
On May 6th the Family Support Center concluded The
Roots and Wings Educational Series designed for parent/
caregivers of individuals’ age 22+ who yearn to assist
their children through adulthood. Sessions were presented by Counselor and Facilitator Kathy Dunn and Arc Social Worker, Robin Gersten. The participants were given
information and resources concerning human stages
of development, the ISP process, services and benefits/
entitlements, pathways to greater independence for their
children and more.
SPRING 2013

Week one included a panel of parents with children of
varying ages/stages of adulthood and with different day
and residential situations sharing their experiences…the
successes and challenges and all that falls in between.
Week two included a panel of self advocates, again of
varying ages and with unique day, vocational, volunteer
and residential situations, who very eloquently discussed
their lives since turning 22, what makes them happy, their
challenges and their vision for their futures.

Employment Services - Growing Plans
“We certainly have been growing” says
Mark Pineo, Assistant Director of Employment Services
Deb Monopoli, Director of Employment Services.
As summer approaches and we are edging closer to the
exciting transition into our new space, we are hopeful that
there will be several new and exciting opportunities for
the individuals in the Supported Employment Program.
One area that we hope to take advantage of is building
maintenance, both inside and out. While the planning is
still in the early stages, we are developing a landscaping
crew which will most likely consist of two or three individuals who will be involved in most all of the aspects of
maintaining the outside of our building and the grounds.
In addition we look forward to to put in place a cleaning
crew that will keep our new building clean and shiny on
the inside. Many of our individuals have extensive experience and really enjoy this work. We believe it will be a
wonderful fit.
Lastly, there is a plan in the making to have individuals
attend a Safe Food Handling class here at the Arc. Once
completed, these participating individuals will work with
coaches to bake and prepare breakfast and lunch items
with many healthy choices to be offered for sale throughout the office.
ARC CLASSIFIEDS
“We are growing in numbers; currently serving 38 clients
in the Supported Employment Program. We continue
to build new community partnerships and are about to
start working with The Old Colony YMCA with 3 internships at Camp Clark . We anticipate these internships
will result in at least 2 permanent, year round positions.
We are able to offer more and more internships to our
program participants thanks to our community partners
and a grant from The United Way of Greater Plymouth
County. Also growing and expanding is our in-house recycling program and we are thankful to the Makepeace
Neighborhood Fund for granting us the funds to get this
very important program up and running. We have 2 part
time interns heading up this program; Jake Destefano
and Victoria Johnson. However, the growth that is most
exciting to watch unfold is the personal growth of each
of the individuals in the program. We have seen this
growth in maturity, self confidence, self control, professionalism, the ability to self advocate, to lead, to be team
players and a willingness to work with, respect and help
one another. There certainly is always room for more
growth, but I think this group is ready for the challenge.”
Attention Business Owners
Amanda Butler is very eager to have
a job that she can call her own.
She recently was part of a crew
working for Chartwell’s at Mass
Maritime. During her time at MMA,
Amanda excelled in dining room
maintenance as well as serving in
the kitchen. She gained many skills
from her experience there that make her a great candidate for employment.
Help us find competitive job placement for this skilled,
motivated and loyal job seeker. If you, a friend, neighbor or family member own a business, we have an
opportunity for you to make a difference. The Arc of
Greater Plymouth Employment Services Dept. has
programs in place for grant-funded on the job training, as well as Job coach supports tailored to your job
requirements.
Amanda would like to work in a restaurant perhaps as
a hostess. She likes the idea of working in a hotel, or a
position of “Caring” for people or animals. She is kind,
very outgoing and always comes to work with a smile
on her face. Amanda would make a wonderful addition
to any team!
South Shore YMCA held an Employee appreciation

Welcome to Elaina Gianatassio who
has joined The Arc Employment Services as a Job Coach and weekend respite
PCA. Elaina began classes at Massasoit
Community College in May and she
will be working toward a Direct Support Certificate in Human Services which is sponsored by
the Department of Developmental Services. “I like all the
interactions with all the staff and individuals. I learn something every day and every day is a rewarding experience”
says Elaina.
Welcome to Lynne Gilmore, also a Job Coach

been with us since October as an independent contractor and became a permanent
employee in March of this year. One of the
reasons Lynne likes working with folks with
DD/ID is her very special Aunt with Down
Syndrome. When asked what she likes best about working
with The Arc, Lynne said “making all these new friends. They
think I’m here to better their lives, but the truth is… they
make my life better!”
Here’s How Arc Employees Grow! Kevin Melville is employed by Verc Enterprises
at the Mobil station/convenience store on Commerce Way in Plymouth. Kevin has worked there for four

AFC News
New Beginnings
by Cari Robbins
New beginnings are happening for Arc member Marie Saldi age 25 and AFC
member Celia Walsh, age 23. These two young women have worked very hard to
accomplish their goal of independent living. Celia and Marie have become roommates and moved into a beautiful 3 bedroom apartment located in Pembroke. The women share their apartment with staff members who assist
them when needed. Celia and Marie are taking on all the responsibilities of independent living including daily
chores, cooking, and household shopping. Their work to achieve this goal is remarkable and inspiring. We congratulate them both, and wish them the best of luck on their new journey of independence. We look forward to more
stories of their accomplishments in the future.
continued from page 4
These panels were wonderful, frank and hopefully enlightening and inspirational for all in attendance.
After the two originally scheduled sessions, we realized that the participants would benefit from a 3rd meeting with
a professional panel. We were happy to welcome Margaret Holmes, Assistant Area Director of the Plymouth DDS Office who discussed adult eligibility, adult DDS services and the ISP. Amy Pratt, Service Coordinator Supervisor from
Plymouth DDS gave a detailed housing presentation…a topic that generated many questions. Claire MacDonald of
the Plymouth Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission office joined the panel to discuss services provided both
before and after age 22. It was a wonderful exchange and a terrific wrap up to our first post transition educational
workshop.
Participants were invited to join a smaller, 5 week Roots and Wings support group which started on May 13th.
We look forward to repeating both our Transition and Roots and Wings workshops in the fall/winter.
For more information regarding Roots and Wings, please call Malissa Kenney or Robin Gersten at 508-732-9292.

A Visit From Representative Tom Calter
Monday March 18th, State Representative Tom Calter joined The Arc Voc. Ed. Class to speak about employment
motivation and to offer encouragement. Following a tour of our office area led by Joe Conley and Tina Theran ,
Tom spoke to an eager group of individuals about his personal life struggles and also his accomplishments. He
questioned the class about where they worked and their ultimate work goals. Many responded that they were
working, but with limited pay and hours, their goal of independent living seemed out of reach.
Representative Calter discussed his own learning disability and recalled the many times he was told he could not
accomplish his personal goals. Tom credited his self advocacy for getting him where he is to be today. He encouraged the group to include him in any of their Self Advocacy projects and to send him copies of any letters written.
Tom also offered to help the group with ideas for starting a business.

LETTER FROM THE AECE
April16, 2013
Lft. To Rt. Efrain Gomez, Tina Theran, Kevin Melville
To all Marathon Runners, Victims and their families, our thoughts and prayers
are with all who were affected by the tragedy. We all hope your family members get well soon
and we are very sorry for ones who perished and we will keep them in our prayers.
The Arc Employment Advisory Committee had a bake sale and we were able to raise $200

and we are sending $400.00 to the One Fund for the victims. Sincerely, The Arc Employment Advisory Committee
TRIP TO THE STATE HOUSE On Wednesday March 6th The Arc of MA and the Developmental Disabilities Council
held their annual legislative reception at the State House. A few members of The Arc decided to attend with a goal,
get the attention of Governor Patrick.
We made the trip by public transportation.I challenge you to take a look around the various
T stations the next time you ride and try to imagine what it would look like to someone in a
wheelchair.. Look for the elevators; notice the gap between the platform and the train. It’s a
struggle that someone in a wheelchair deals with everyday. This was one of the issues the Arc
members wanted to bring to the attention of our legislators at the event.
One of our individuals, Marie, introduced herself to Gov. Patrick told him where we were from.
She explained she works 5 days a week at The Arc as our receptionist and the Governor was
so proud to hear this that he gave her a ‘fist bump’. “Good for you! You’re getting it done!” he
exclaimed. Mission accomplished.
