The following programs helped raise funds for the Orioles Charitable Foundation in 2015: LICENSE PLATE PROGRAM Since its launch in 2012, the Orioles License Plate Program has raised more than $111,000 for the Orioles Charitable Foundation. This season, the Orioles held an online charity auction for the 2130 and the 2131 numbered license plates in honor of the 20th anniversary of Cal Ripken, Jr.’s record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game. The auction raised $5,598 with all proceeds benefiting the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation. SCOREBOARD SURPRISES For a small financial contribution, fans can have a birthday or anniversary message appear on the scoreboard during home games at Oriole Park. In 2015, the scoreboard surprises program raised nearly $43,000 for the Foundation. MEMORIAL DAY JERSEYS AUCTION On Memorial Day, Orioles uniformed personnel wore special home jerseys featuring an authentic, military-digital camouflage design licensed from the United States Marine Corps embedded into the twill, as well as digicamo-patterned caps featuring the cartoon bird. The game-worn jerseys and caps were autographed, authenticated, and auctioned to benefit the Fort Meade Alliance Foundation, raising nearly $14,000. On September 11, the Orioles presented a check in that amount to Col. Brian Foley, Garrison Commander of U.S. Army Fort Meade 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, Command Sgt. Maj. Rodwell Forbes, and representatives Deon Viergutz, Steve Tiller, and Jay Baldwin of the Fort Meade Alliance Foundation. COMMUNITY BOOTH During each home game, the Orioles provide a community booth for charitable, nonprofit organizations to distribute information, sell raffle tickets, register participants, and raise awareness for Orioles fans. Nearly 60 different organizations participated in the Community Booth Program in 2015. LUNGEVITY FOUNDATION Through various initiatives to raise funds and awareness, the Orioles continued their partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation, a nonprofit firmly committed to increasing quality-of-life and survivorship of people with lung cancer, as well as providing community, support, and education for all those affected by the disease. The Orioles once again hosted the LUNGevity Foundation’s Breathe Deep Baltimore on October 18, a 5K walk to raise funds and awareness for lung cancer in memory of late Orioles Public Relations Director Monica Pence Barlow. More than $139,000 was raised at the walk, including a $10,000 donation from United Concordia, and all proceeds benefited the LUNGevity Foundation. Additionally, Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy and third base coach Bobby Dickerson instructed fielding drills to a youth baseball team from Savage, MD, to fulfill an experience auctioned during the 2014 MLB Winter Meetings, benefiting the LUNGevity Foundation. Orioles players continued to donate funds, totaling over $166,000 in financial contributions to the Orioles Charitable Foundation in 2015. GAME-USED MEMORABILIA AND ONLINE AUCTIONS Through various online auctions of special anniversary jerseys and other game-used items, the Orioles raised more than $318,000 this year. Over $25,000 was donated to Shannon’s Fund over the course of 2015. Shannon’s Fund was established by the Orioles and OriolesREACH in 2008 in memory of Shannon Obaker, the club’s former Director of Community Outreach, who bravely fought cancer for a year before she passed away in 2007 at the age of 29. MLB INITIATIVES MARYLAND GOVERNOR LARRY HOGAN & ORIOLES TEAM UP TO FIGHT CHILDHOOD CANCER As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Orioles announced a new partnership with the office of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Ronald McDonald House Charities in the fight against pediatric cancer. The Orioles partner with Major League Baseball and support worthy causes chosen by the league each year. The following programs and organizations were part of this partnership in 2015: JACKIE ROBINSON DAY In support of this important initiative, the Orioles hosted a fundraiser in September and presented a check for $50,000 to benefit the causes. An exclusive ticket offer allowed fans to contribute while receiving a discount on game tickets for remaining 2015 season games. In recognition of the 68th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball, the Orioles honored Robinson’s legacy on April 15, by hosting a “self-expression” contest with the Boys & Girls Club at the Westport Homes branch. Members were challenged to express their thoughts creatively through a speech, poem, art, or skit about Robinson’s nine values for success: citizenship, commitment, courage, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence, and teamwork. BARCS ANIMAL SHELTER PET CALENDAR FUNDRAISER 3 The Orioles launched the annual Orioles Pet Calendar, sponsored by Pet+E.R., with proceeds benefiting BARCS, a nonprofit shelter that accepts and cares for all animals in need. The 16-month calendar features photos of Orioles players and manager Buck Showalter with their pets as well as various BARCS animals at locations around Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Additionally, Brad Brach, Zach Britton, Kevin Gausman, Miguel Gonzalez, J.J. Hardy, and Matt Wieters appeared at BARCS for an autograph signing in August. More than $46,000 has been raised for BARCS through pet calendar sales in 2015 and the Orioles have helped raise nearly $190,000 for the shelter over the past seven years via calendar sales and player signings. The largest companion animal shelter in Maryland, BARCS takes in more than 12,000 dogs and cats and 1,000 wildlife and other small mammals annually. On any given day, BARCS cares for 110 dogs and 110 cats in the shelter, plus more than 800 animals in foster care. A panel of three distinguished individuals – Orioles center fielder Adam Jones, Chair of the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s Mid-Atlantic Scholar Advisory Committee Kendra Gaither, and Secretary of the Jackie Robinson Foundation Alumni Association Lauryn Nwankpa – evaluated each project. On April 15, all Orioles uniformed personnel wore No. 42, Robinson’s retired number, joining all other Major League teams in honoring Robinson’s historic achievement. Each player’s authenticated, game-worn, and autographed No. 42 jersey was auctioned, raising more than $10,000 to benefit the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation and the Jackie Robinson Foundation. Since 2009, the Orioles have raised more than $70,000 for the Jackie Robinson Foundation through the auction. AUTISM SPEAKS In April, the Orioles hosted Autism Awareness Night, as OriolesREACH and Major League Baseball partnered with Autism Speaks to recognize April as National Autism Awareness Month. The night included a ceremonial first pitch from Owen Skerry, the inspiration for one of the top Baltimore Walk Now for Autism Speaks teams, as well as a Quiet Room in Suite 73, and an information booth. 4 KIDSPEACE Since its doors opened in 1882, more than 200,000 children have participated in one of the multitude of programs KidsPeace offers. These initiatives include a comprehensive range of residential treatment programs, accredited educational services, and a variety of foster care and community-based programs to give hope, help, and healing to children, families, and communities. The organization offers services in 10 states, including Maryland, and provides an atmosphere of teamwork, compassion, and creativity. The Orioles and OriolesREACH partner with KidsPeace to host a variety of initiatives benefitting the nonprofit and hve raised more than $425,000 over the course of five years since the relationship began in 2011. 4 ALS DAY Continuing baseball’s long-standing commitment to raising awareness of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Major League Baseball and all 30 Clubs once again teamed up “4 ALS.” In August, the Orioles participated in the return of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as each Major League club hosted its own ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and then challenged another franchise, along with two other local personalities or organizations, to partake in the charitable effort. Bullpen catcher Jett Ruiz served as Orioles spokesperson for the initiative. Ruiz was teammates for three seasons with Pete Frates on Boston College’s baseball team. Frates, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012, has served as one of the driving forces behind the Ice Bucket Challenge. In support of the campaign, MLB donated $100,000 to The ALS Association to further collaborative efforts between several ALS organizations. 2015 HONORARY BAT GIRL CONTEST TM Major League Baseball announced Sara Tresselt as the Orioles Honorary Bat Girl winner among the 30 representatives of the 2015 Honorary Bat Girl Contest, which recognizes baseball fans who have been affected by breast cancer and demonstrate a commitment to eradicating the disease. Tresselt was honored during an on-field ceremony, threw out the ceremonial first pitch, and received pink MLB merchandise and tickets to a game in May. The 37-year-old breast cancer fighter, who was diagnosed with Stage III Invasive Ductal Carcenoma-Breast Cancer in October of 2011, passed away in September. Tresselt demonstrated bravery and selflessness throughout her battle, continuing to volunteer at the local homeless shelter and soup kitchen each week and while also participating in a mission trip to Ecuador, bringing school supplies to an orphanage. Along with monetary and memorabilia donations as well as charitable events in 2015, the Orioles also hosted 10 members of the KidsPeace KEYS group in July to shadow various members of the front office and learn what it takes to work behind-the-scenes of a Major League Baseball game. KEYS (KidsPeace Empowering Youth to Succeed) is a life skills training and education program for youth transitioning from foster care to independent living that prepares youth to effectively implement learned skills by providing support through four different areas: internships/job training, individual sessions, flexible funding, and group sessions. The KEYS group experienced working with several different departments during the day including Community Relations, Public Relations, Ballpark Operations, Corporate Partnerships, and Productions. The group also had the chance to meet KidsPeace supporter and Orioles manager Buck Showalter, and joined him for a PSA shoot promoting the KidsPeace Trick-or-Trot 5K/1-Mile Walk that was held at Oriole Park in October. Following their experience pregame, the group attended that night’s game against the Atlanta Braves as guests of the Orioles. Over the past five years, the Orioles, along with Showalter and his wife Angela, have joined forces with KidsPeace to host the annual Trick-or-Trot 5K/1-Mile Walk to benefit children in foster care. The Halloween-themed race began and ended at Oriole Park this past October and included a preand post-race party featuring a costume contest, face painting, food, and Halloween fun. “Angela and I were thankful for the opportunity to host the annual KidsPeace Trick-or-Trot,” said Showalter. “We believe deeply in the services this organization provides to foster youth and their families, and are honored to continue to be a part of the Orioles’ commitment to the Birdland community.” More than 1,200 runners, walkers, sponsors, and volunteers participated this year and the event raised more than $119,000. PLAY SUN SMART 5 For the 17th season, the American Academy of Dermatology and Major League Baseball teamed up to educate the public about the importance of sun safety. In May, the Orioles recognized Play Sun Smart, which began its season-long program to raise skin cancer awareness, while encouraging players and fans to practice sun-safe behavior and to schedule regular skin screenings. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Orioles fan Tanya Locklear from Glen Burnie, MD. Several weeks prior, Locklear was diagnosed with Stage IV Invasive Melanoma and was being treated at Johns Hopkins for multiple tumors including several melanoma brain tumors. Additionally, the Orioles hosted KidsPeace Night this season as 150 youth received game tickets, concessions vouchers, an Orioles t-shirt and cap, as well as transportation to and from the September 1 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. KidsPeace also held a silent auction that night featuring several signed memorabilia items to help raise money for the critical services it provides. Through a broad spectrum of events and experiences, the Orioles and KidsPeace continue to pursue a brighter future for youth in foster care. With the help of Buck and Angela Showalter, as well as the Birdland community, the Orioles are committed to enriching the lives of families in need and empowering youth to succeed. 6 YOUTH EDUCATION FIELD TRIP DAY AT ORIOLE PARK AT CAMDEN YARDS OriolesREACH, in partnership with MASN and WJZ-TV, hosted approximately 11,000 students from local schools for the eighth annual Field Trip Day at Oriole Park. The students had the opportunity to learn about weather from WJZ-TV’s First Warning Weather Team of Chelsea Ingram, Bob Turk, and Tim Williams, and Orioles Head Groundskeeper Nicole McFadyen. The Orioles support educational programs for students throughout Baltimore City and the state of Maryland by providing real world experiences and baseball as an incentive for students to help increase their willingness to learn and succeed. The organization understands and is committed to backing these efforts, as a proper education is one of the most important investments one can make to ensure positive results in a child’s development. MARYLAND STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: “BIRD ON A STEM” In May, the Orioles partnered with Maryland Public Schools to launch a new educational initiative known as “Bird on a STEM” lesson plans. The program, which was created by Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows, focuses on developing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math skills in the classroom. The “Bird on a STEM” program strives to educate and excite statewide youth about Orioles Baseball and to cover the Maryland State Board of Education’s STEM curriculum. This partnership made for a new, unique, fun, and interactive way to teach students their mandatory subject matter in a way that interests them and enables them to relate to real world experiences. The program not only consists of classroom instruction, but it offers the opportunity for students to attend Orioles baseball games, to receive behind the scenes ballpark tours to learn about the history of the team and the city, and to meet Orioles players. The Orioles and the “Bird on a STEM” initiative provide these experiences to help the students relate to what they are learning in the classroom. ORIOLES SUMMER READING PROGRAM BALTIMORE CITY SCHOOLS NIGHT The Orioles celebrated Baltimore City Schools Night by providing complimentary tickets to more than 7,000 students, teachers, and staff for a game against the Toronto Blue Jays in May. The Baltimore City College Choir performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “O Canada” before the game, and the Frederick Douglass High School JROTC presented the color guard. Teacher of the Year, Ryan Kaiser, from the Mount Washington School threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Additionally, the Orioles Wives donated a suite to the Baltimore City School Teacher of the Year nominees. Students in the program registered at their local public library, read books, and participated in classes and workshops. The Orioles supported the 2015 Maryland Public Library Summer Reading Program by donating 5,000 tickets to Maryland Public Library Branches. The Orioles also acknowledged the 2015 Summer Reading Program representatives from each county library on the field prior to a game in September. 8 SCHOOL APPEARANCES This season, Wei-Yin Chen and the Oriole Bird visited the Baltimore International Academy #335, a full language immersion school, which requires students to learn their core subjects through one of five languages. As part of the “It Can Wait” program, AT&T presented a 10-minute documentary titled “The Last Text,” which recounted stories of families and students who have lost loved ones or have been involved in accidents as a result of texting while driving. Following the video, Joseph spoke to the students, shared stories from his childhood, and participated in a question-and-answer session. IMMERSIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE AT ORIOLE PARK This season, the Orioles hosted students from the Leadership in Media Production program from Baltimore City Public Schools through a partnership with “Youth Works.” The summer program focused on enhancing the in-school curriculum and allowed students to learn about digital storytelling and broadcasting. The Orioles and MASN provided these students with the opportunity to showcase their talents and to learn about the behind-the-scenes productions at the ballpark. Approximately 10 students from the class visited Oriole Park in July and produced a story about their experience working at a Major League Baseball game. Students covered the manager’s pregame press conference and OriolesREACH pregame events, observed MASN’s television production from various places around the ballpark, and practiced play-by-play announcing in a broadcast booth during the game. The students talked about how their experience shaped their pursuit of landing a career in media production in their final project. 9 10 YOUTH BASEBALL The Orioles believe that children of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities should be given the opportunity to play and enjoy the game of baseball. The Orioles have partnered with several leagues and developed programs to provide this opportunity for kids throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and in Sarasota. MANNY MACHADO’S BASEBOWL TOURNAMENT & “PLAY BASEBALL” CLINIC Orioles third baseman Manny Machado hosted his 2nd Annual Celebrity BaseBOWL Tournament on May 18. In 2015, United Concordia partnered with the Baltimore RBI and donated $10,000 toward the program, which benefited both baseball and softball teams. Six softball teams, six 12U baseball teams, 11 baseball teams ages 13-15, and 12 baseball teams ages 16-18 drove record participation in 2015 with more than 475 participating players. The Orioles supported Baltimore RBI participants in a variety of ways including a recognition ceremony and complimentary tickets to RBI coaches and players. RBI coaches participated in a clinic hosted by the Positive Coaching Alliance, a Stanford University-based nonprofit organization who works with coaches, organizational leaders, and parents to teach young athletes about teamwork, discipline, respect, and setting proper goals through their athletic experiences. The Orioles sent All-Star teams to Prince George’s County to represent Baltimore in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament. The club provided transportation, uniforms, and hotel accommodations. Each season, the Baltimore Orioles provide complimentary Orioles tickets to nonprofit, community-based organizations through this initiative. ORIOLES MAGICAL WISHES PROGRAM The Orioles Magical Wishes Program provides critically-ill children with an opportunity to watch batting practice on the field before Orioles home games, as well as the chance to receive autographs from their favorite players before enjoying a game with their families. The program gives children an escape from the treatments they are receiving, as well as VIP treatment at the ballpark. Some of the dedicated organizations that refer these children are the Casey Cares Foundation, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and The Ronald McDonald House of Baltimore. ORIOLES REACH VOLUNTEER TEAM Each year, members of the Orioles front office through the OriolesREACH Volunteer Team program volunteer with various organizations in the region to help improve the local community. This year, the OriolesREACH Volunteer Team donated their time at the Franciscan Center, Maryland Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, St. Francis Neighborhood Center, USO of Metropolitan WashingtonBaltimore, and at other local organizations. ORIOLES PARTNER WITH THE FRANCISCAN CENTER, INC. TO HOST “GAME NIGHT” As part of an ongoing commitment to volunteerism, the Orioles partnered with the Franciscan Center, Inc., and hosted a “Game Night” event and evening meal for hungry men, women, and children in the community in August. The Franciscan Center has served the Baltimore community since 1968, providing food, clothing, emergency financial assistance, and supportive outreach. 17 COOL KIDS CAMPAIGN In late July, the Orioles hosted 50 children from the Cool Kids Campaign as part of “Buses for Baseball.” At the conclusion of Orioles batting practice, a number of Orioles players greeted and interacted with the youth. The Cool Kids Campaign is a nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of life for pediatric oncology patients and their families by focusing on the academic, social, and emotional needs brought on by a cancer diagnosis. “Buses for Baseball,” a program administered and underwritten by the Major League Baseball Players Trust, provides transportation, game tickets, and personal greetings from players to underprivileged children across the country. Also this season, Ryan Flaherty, Adam Jones, and Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas represented all Major League Baseball players when they presented a check for $10,000 to the Cool Kids Campaign Foundation, located in Towson, MD. The Cool Kids Campaign was co-founded by Rob Belanger, son of the late Orioles Hall of Famer and Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) Special Assistant, Mark Belanger. 18 PLAYER HONORS HEART & HUSTLE AWARD PRESENTED BY MLBPAA Adam Jones received the Orioles’ 2015 Heart & Hustle Award from the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA). This esteemed award, voted on by Alumni players, honors active players who demonstrate a passion for the game of baseball and best embody the values, spirit, and tradition of the game. Jones previously won this award during the 2012 and 2014 seasons. MILITARY & VETERAN APPRECIATION The Orioles extend several special offers to members of the military and U.S. veterans throughout the season including discounted tickets, complimentary gift items for military members and their families, and complimentary “Welcome Home” scoreboard messages. At select Sunday home games, AT&T and the Orioles also invite the family of a deployed military service man or woman to be their guest of the game and feature the family on the centerfield video board. ROBERTO CLEMENTE AWARD PRESENTED BY CHEVROLET Brian Matusz was named the Orioles 2015 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Matusz was one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. Matusz earned the Orioles’ 2015 nomination for his work with many charities in and around Baltimore, including Casey Cares, the Cool Kids Campaign, Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, and the OriolesREACH Gameday Experience Program. As part of the nomination, in honor of Roberto Clemente, Matusz presented the Casey Cares Foundation with a $7,500 donation from Chevrolet. Additionally, through the Sunday Suite Program in partnership with GEICO, the Orioles host wounded service members and other active duty, veteran, and military organizations in a private, catered suite. The Orioles provide a special player meet and greet before the game, recognition after the playing of “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch and complimentary Orioles player T-shirts. Participating players this year included Zach Britton, Brad Brach, Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy, Darren O’Day, Chris Tillman and Matt Wieters. In support of Orioles partner Southwest Airlines, David Lough participated in the Southwest Airlines “Trading Places” promotion at BWI Airport. Lough took part in a variety of jobs performed by Southwest Airlines employees including boarding passengers for a departing flight, supporting the arrival of a Southwest Airlines aircraft, and more. Additionally, Zach Britton frequently visited the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center Division of Pediatric Oncology, to spend time with children battling cancer. During one of his visits, Britton selected a child from the hospital to throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to an Orioles game. 19 The Baltimore Sun Media Group presented Darren O’Day with the 2015 Tim Wheatley Award for Community Service. The Baltimore Sun Media Group created the Tim Wheatley Award in 2010 to honor a local athlete whose contributions off the field were just as important as his or her contributions on the field. O’Day has supported the USO and the Orioles’ Military Sunday Suite Program and has donated $50 to Luke’s Wings for every batter he struck out. Since 2013, O’Day raised nearly $12,600 for Luke’s Wings, a nonprofit military organization dedicated to the support of current and former service members wounded in battle. THE BOB FELLER ACT OF VALOR AWARD Darren O’Day was the Orioles finalist for the 2015 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award. Each year, the MLBPAA gives the Brooks Robinson Community Service Award to a current or former Major Leaguer whose community service exemplifies the unselfish and humble attitude of Brooks Robinson, bettering the lives of the youth in his community. The award was created to honor the dedication Robinson has shown to young people across the country through his support of the Legends for Youth Clinic series and the MLBPAA since its inception in 1982. Since 2001, the Orioles have partnered with the Baltimore-based Casey Cares Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides personalized, uplifting, and ongoing programs with a special touch to critically-ill children and their family members throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. The ongoing relationship with the foundation has included ticket and memorabilia donations, on-field experiences, player visits at local hospitals, and Casey Cares Extra Innings Events where children and their families meet with Orioles players to learn how to play baseball. Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz served as the honorary “Race Ambassador” for the 2015 Casey Cares 5K Run/Walk. Leading up to the event, he helped to promote the race through radio and TV interviews by encouraging fans to participate. On the day of the 5K, Matusz joined 2,100 runners at the starting line to kick-off the race and participated in the on-field ceremony honoring the winners. With the help of Matusz and the Orioles, this year’s race raised more than $106,000 for the Casey Cares Foundation. Each year, the Orioles partner with the Casey Cares Foundation to host a 5K Run/Walk benefiting patients and their families. The Casey Cares Foundation launched its first 5K event in 2010 and later moved the race to Oriole Park at Camden Yards in 2013. The 3.1-mile run and one-mile walk now begins at the ballpark and ends on the field. Since moving the race to Oriole Park, the Casey Cares 5K Run/Walk has raised more than $290,000 to provide programs for sick children and their families. Many Orioles players have taken a special interest in the Casey Cares Foundation, often visiting with patients at nearby hospitals, attending Casey Cares Extra Innings Events, hosting Casey Cares patients at the ballpark, and helping the children experience batting practice and tour the clubhouse. In August, the Orioles and OriolesREACH again partnered with the Casey Cares Foundation to host the sixth annual Casey Cares 5K Run/Walk at Oriole Park. The event featured a pregame warm-up with the Oriole Bird, music and other entertainment, along with post-race refreshments. The top race winners were announced in a pregame ceremony prior to that night’s game. Executive Director Casey Baynes founded the Casey Cares Foundation in 2000 for five Baltimore families with the goal of providing uplifting programs and activities for children fighting cancer and other serious illnesses. With the help of the Orioles, the charity has grown to serve hundreds of families throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and has now provided more than 16,000 activities for critically-ill children and their families.
