Peterborough Pride 2015
www.peterboroughpride.ca
Our Mission:
“Peterborough Pride” exists to: support & celebrate people of all sexual orientations and
gender identities (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Intersex and
Two-Spirit – LGBTTQI2-S); honour and give thanks to those who have come before us and
contribute to the resilient spirit and courage of the present struggle for our human rights. We
promote a justice seeking future through education and advocacy so that all may participate
fully in the life and work of the City of Peterborough and surrounding area with safety, dignity
& respect!
Values we believe in:
• Treating all shareholders with respect and dignity
• Being volunteer-driven and recognizing the value and contribution of all shareholders
• Transparency and accountability of actions
• Commitment to anti-oppression principles and practices
• Promoting diversity, inclusivity and accessibility for all
• Celebration!
A Brief History:
In 2003, a group of bold and courageous individuals organized Peterborough’s 1st Gay Pride
parade and Mayor Sylvia Sutherland officially proclaimed September 13th as Gay Pride Day.
On that occasion, over 300 people participated in the parade. The proclamation was a strong
statement endorsing the importance of diversity in our community.
In 2005, Peterborough Pride participants celebrated the passing of Bill C-38 (the equal
marriage bill) when Parliament spoke clearly and loudly in proclaiming that all couples,
regardless of gender, are equal in value and equal in law in every province and territory of
our country. Ongoing efforts to gain full equal rights for all members of our community have
continued to be given profile during Pride events.
Press PLAY!
This year marks the 13th Peterborough Pride celebration. The theme for Pride Week this
year is “Press PLAY”. For some, “PLAY” relates to sports; for others it relates to audio or video
experiences. For yet others it means “have fun” and to others still, simply a general notion of
moving forward. This year’s theme is open to your interpretation, make it your own, YOU get
to play with it. Just “Press PLAY” for Peterborough Pride.
When we walk or march in the Pride Parade we carry with us the memory of those that have
marched and fought over the last 40 and more years to win the rights and respect we now
share. While we celebrate inclusiveness and diversity here, we must also highlight the need
to continue to push for rights and respect around the world. Everyone should be able to live
and love as they wish with dignity and without fear. Freedom from discrimination of any sort
should be a basic human right that all humans can enjoy.
Pride Week is an opportunity for us to connect and build community. It has been a rallying
point for education and response on issues of interest and importance and it has helped
change perceptions. It is an important part of the effort to create a community with room for
us to fully, safely, and happily participate in Peterborough life.
We invite you to have a great Pride Week and to participate year round in your community.
Special Thanks
for the support of the
For the past 12 years, the Peterborough Pride Committee, made up of representatives of
community organizations along with community volunteers, encouraged by overwhelming
support from post-secondary institutions, individuals, community service agencies and
business people in Peterborough, has committed to making Peterborough Pride an annual
celebration.
www.peterborough.ca
Each year the celebrations have expanded with more events, a bigger parade, park event,
performances, workshops and dances. Although we identify a Pride Week, events now cover
more than a week and the celebration is a cornerstone opportunity for the community to
gather and express itself publicly. In 2011 for the first time, the Pride proclamation was read
by the Mayor, Daryl Bennett before the parade and this tradition has continued.
Peterborough
Police Service
We continue to work with the community to build an enduring organizational structure that
includes greater inclusivity and opportunities for them to help make Pride Week what they
want it to be. With over 20 events planned during Peterborough Pride 2015, we hope the
participation keeps building!
