Background – History of Area
The Early 1900’s through the Early 1960’s
1900 – Tacoma Eastern Railroad Extended into Area
1910 – Start of sawmill operations
1935 – 1976 the Columbia Powder Plant
1955 – Area remains mostly agricultural and forest
with only a few hundred scattered homes.
1956 – Started Construction of SR 512
The 1960’s through the 1990’s
1964 – Rail service ceased – bankruptcy of Milwaukee Road
1968 – Port of Tacoma purchased 500 acres
1972 – Completion of SR 512
1990 – Boeing Company constructed its skin and spar facility located at
the former Columbia Powder Plant site.
1998 – Rail service re-established (City of Tacoma)
