Hobie Alter. He Started Out Shaping Surfboards, He Ended Up Shaping A Culture.
Growing up in Laguna Beach during the 1950s, Hobie Alter always knew he wanted
to make life fun. But how could he have known that he would someday make a life
out of fun? And in the process forever change the way people play in the water.
It all began on a sunny day at Laguna’s Main Beach, when a teenaged buddy of
Hobie’s asked “What are we going to do with our lives?” For Hobie the answer was
simple. He looked out onto the waves, dug his toes in the sand and said, “Nothing
where we have to wear shoes, or live on the east side of the Pacific Coast Highway.”
introducing a whole new way to have fun in the sun and revolutionizing the industry
in the process. In the past three and a half decades more people have taken to the
water on a Hobie Cat than almost any other sailboat design. The Hobie 14, 16, 17,
18 and 20 foot models are still the world’s best selling cats and it’s hard to find a
body of water on any continent that doesn’t have an active Hobie fleet.
In the years to follow plenty of other ocean innovations emerged from Hobie’s fertile
imagination: the handy Hobie Power Skiff, a frisky 33’ monohull sailer, a 60’ ocean
voyaging power cat and innovative fishing floats. Life out of the water wasn’t ignored,
either. Hobie’s logo has meant the very best in everything from radio-controlled gliders
and skateboards to his world-famous polarized sunglasses and sportswear.
If you use it in or around the water, it seems, Hobie has made it and made it better. The
perfect example is Hobie’s new line of touring and fishing kayaks, whose innovative
foot-pedal Mirage Drive represents the first major design change in over 300 years!
The solution was born in his parents’ garage, when Hobie decided to apply his love
of woodworking to the then-fledgling sport of surfing. Dad backed the Buick out of
the way to make room for a shipment of balsawood, Hobie got out his drawknife
and carved out his very first surfboard. Friends soon started dropping by and
before you knew it there was no room left for the Buick—Hobie’s business of fun
had begun.
Hobie and the sport grew together. A couple of years and 40 tons of sawdust later,
Hobie opened up Southern California’s first surf shop in Dana Point. Then in 1958
Hobie and buddy Gordon “Grubby” Clark began experimenting with new materials,
literally inventing the polyurethane foam surfboard (and blowing up the garage in
the process). The new boards were lighter, faster and easier to ride than anything
else in the water. Suddenly everyone wanted to be a surfer—and every surfer
wanted a Hobie.
By the mid-1960s, while the Beach Boys were making records, the legendary Hobie
Surf Team was setting them. Hobie’s lineup was a veritable Who’s Who of surfing
greats. Phil Edwards, Joey Cabell, Corky Carroll, Mickey Munoz, Joyce Hoffman,
Joey Hamasaki, Gary Propper, Billy Hamilton and Herbie Fletcher are just a few of
the champions who sported the distinctive Hobie diamond logo over the years.
Hobie’s enduring combination of innovation and meticulous attention to detail
would continue to attract the world’s best surfers and shapers to the label for the
next 40 years. But for Hobie Alter, the fun had just began with surfboards.
In the late 60’s Hobie started messing around in boats. With head designer Phil
Edwards Hobie developed a prototype for a lightweight, fast and easy-to-sail
playboat based on the Polynesian twin-hulled catamaran. History soon repeated
itself. What the foam Hobie surfboard did for surfing the Hobie Cat did for sailing,

It seems incredible that one man’s vision could provide so much fun for watermen and
women the world over, but in that department Hobie Alter stands alone. Hobie didn’t
just create toys, he created a way of life, a whole new way of looking at our watery

Why Fish from a Hobie Mirage?
It’s simple, you’ll catch more fish. With no motor to scare them off, the fish won’t know
you’re coming. Go places powerboats can’t, in rocky shallows, up narrow creek channels,
and over prop-snagging vegetation. The Hobie Mirage allows you to keep your hands
on the rod and reel at all times and provides the stability needed to land the big one.

As a nimble, efficient watercraft the kayak’s basic design remained unchanged
for centuries—until now. Hobie’s MirageDrive achieved a real stroke of genius by
eliminating the stroke and introducing the step.
Here’s how it works: alternating pedal steps drive two underwater fins that work
much like a penguin’s flippers, propelling the Mirage with surprising speed and
ease, coming up to plane in a snap and reaching top speed with minimum effort.
In a match race between a single Hobie Mirage and a conventional tandem kayak,
the Hobie Mirage won hands-down (pun intended).
The magic is in the drive pattern. With each step the MirageDrive “flippers” flex and
take the shape of a propeller blade, then reverse this shape on the alternating step.
Unlike the complete revolution of a conventional propeller, this sweeping action allows
the MirageDrive to utilize large, powerful blades in a shallower configuration. By using
very short steps with the blades perpendicular to the hull, you can easily propel the boat
through the shallowest water. The blades can even be “tucked up” for beach landings.
Steering? Say goodbye to the paddle sweep and hello to finger-tip control. The
Mirage steering system is conveniently positioned at arm’s length and allows
instant control of the kick-up rudder.
Get out on the water and the benefits become obvious. Using the large muscle groups
of the legs and hips generates far more efficient power than back and arms. Tracking
and directional control are no longer issues. The Mirage is quiet, dry (no more
dripping paddles) and leaves your hands free for fishing, photography or hydration.
