APCAP 2016
Welcome Message from General Chair
Welcome to 2016 IEEE 5th Asia-Pacific Conference on Antennas and Propagation (APCAP 2016)!
On behalf of the organizing committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome all the participants
around the world to attend APCAP 2016 to be held from July 26 to 29, 2016 at Grand Hi-Lai Hotel
in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
APCAP is an international forum for the exchange of information on the progress and recent
advancements in the research and development of innovative antenna technology and radio wave
propagation. APCAP was successfully inaugurated in Singapore in 2012 and held in Chiangmai,
Thailand in 2013, Harbin, China in 2014, and Bali Island, Indonesia in 2015. APCAP 2016 is the
fifth APCAP and will offer a rich scientific program of the highest quality with keynote and invited
speakers from all over the world.
APCAP 2016 will cover a wide range of topics related to Antennas, Propagation, EM Wave,
EMC/EMI, Microwaves, and Millimeter and Terahertz Waves. This symposium also provides
opportunities for the delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to
establish business or research relations and to find global partners for future collaboration.
The support of conference sponsors is greatly appreciated. I would also like to express my sincere
thanks to the contributing authors, the invited lecturers, speakers and all the organizing committee
members. Their support makes this conference possible.
Finally, thank you for attending the conference and wish you have an enjoyable stay in vibrant
Kaohsiung!

APCAP 2016
Invited Lecturers Workshop on AP Technologies
Room C, 14:00-16:40, Tuesday, July 26
Dr. Hiroyuki Arai (Yokohoma National University)
Lecture title: “Flexible Waveguides and Antennas for On/Off Body Communication”
Abstract: Flexible waveguides consisting of band pass filters and transmission lines are presented for
on-body communication networks. A subsidiary flexible waveguide on body surface is another option for
on-body communication with high security and small transmission losses. A smart suit made by this
waveguides will be used for astronauts, rescue works and others. A sheet-like flexible 2-D waveguide
provides free access by any type of antennas in any positions, however its propagating cylindrical wave
increases transmission losses. By limiting the coupling position on body surface, the transmission line is
replaced by 2-D waveguide and easy electromagnetic coupling structure gives free access to the
transmission line network on the body surface. Flexible waveguides for smart suits are demonstrated by
printed electronics technology. This talk also contains flexible off-body antenna design with same
fabrication process.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dr. John Batchelor (University of Kent)
Lecture title: “Passive RFID Sensing Tags”
Abstract: The rise of big data and pervasive wireless sensing networks leads to the need for new, very
low cost and low environmental impact sensing nodes. In this presentation, different techniques for
achieving passive sensing based on passive RFID technology are introduced. The first technique uses
detuning of a resonant tag antenna in proportion to an external stimulus. The second technique introduces
a latching mechanism to memorize the occurrence of certain states when the tag is not energized. The
third technique exploits the functionality of RFID chips to update the output communications register
without the need for a powered ADC chip. This allows the signaling of digitize data for state based
sensing. Various examples of passive tags sensitive to gas vapors, liquids, freezing, and movement will
be described. The tags are UHF RFID with read ranges in the order of meters.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dr. Xingfeng Wu (Huawei Technologies)
Lecture title: “MIMO OTA Test for the Performance of 4G Mobile Phone”
Abstract: The measurement methodologies for performance evaluation of terminals using multi-antenna
technology are called MIMO OTA which are deeply discussed by many standardization organizations in
past 5 years, such as 3GPP RAN4, CTIA MOSG (MIMO OTA Sub Group), CCSA (Chinese
Communication Standardization Association) TC9 and IC1004 TWGO.
The reason why it took so long time for MIMO OTA standardization are varied, while one of these
should be complicated theories both from MIMO technology used by DUT itself and MIMO OTA
channel model re-construction. Even today, there are still many details which could have effects on final
result left for further study. The calibration and validation of channel models rebuilt in Lab should be
confirmed before any tests are executed, while there are few of Labs can provide these verifications.
Furthermore, industries are also seeking for the solutions balancing between the accuracy and investment.
ABP, together with HWA-TECH, is deeply involved in the MIMO OTA activities and especially studied
the MIMO OTA methodology based on solution of multi-probes plus channel emulator since 2012.
The principle of MIMO OTA as well as test examples will be introduced in this presentation. Some
challenges and solutions will also be explained.
