Hair Care tips by Lady J Looking Fabulous Even In Tough Times Want to maintain that well put together look, even when salon visits are cut down or just not an option. Here are some tips for tough times. 1-Consider a well defined cut that can be worn in more than one style but doesn’t cost a lot to maintain. An easy to work easy to play style that you can wash at home flat iron or curl and tousle through with your fingers is the way to go. 2-An updated mid –length layered bob will always grow out nicely. Hot oil treatments followed by moisturizing shampoos and conditioners help to nourish and strengthen your coif. Semipermanent colors are good when you’re trying to save money because you don’t have to maintain the color as often as permanent. Always use the same products as your stylist-your hair Will benefit from the regular routine. Look for styles that are appealing and low-maintenance. With a little love care your hair will still look fabulous even if you can’t get back to the salon as quickly as you’d like. Dr.Edloe The Doc’s in every Thursday live on WCLM 1450am 7pm Health Tips for 2010 1. Get up and do something. Obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and arthritis are all chronic conditions that are more prevalent among the inactive, overweight population. Just 30 minutes of moderate physical exercise everyday can help keep your risk for these serious, costly conditions low. You’ll be improving your overall health while taking steps (literally) to help keep healthcare cost down. 2. Watch your mouth. Eating right can improve your overall, and therefore keep your healthcare costs down. Obesity and being overweight, and the health problems associated with them, cost Americans as much as $100 billion each year. Devising a nutritional plan to accompany your excise program can reduce chronic problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and asthma. Proper nutrition can improve your overall health, reducing the risk of such common illnesses as colds and viruses. 3. Develop a Professional Relationship. Two professionals are vital to your optimal healthcare cost savings- your physician and your pharmacist. Getting to know them, and letting them really get to know you and your family can save all of us billions each year. You see, Americans spend about $15 billion on preventable medical “errors” each year. These “errors” result from patients not being completely forthcoming with their physicians. We like to lie about how much we smoke or drink, about how much we really understand what the doctor or pharmacist is saying regarding our condition and its treatment, about what medications we are taking. These “errors” result in overmedicating, under dosing, medication interactions, allergic reactions, drug/alcohol interactions, and other preventable injuries. Honesty really is the best policy, especially when it comes to your physical and mental health. Having a good relationship with your physical can have added benefits, too. Regular checkups can spot problems before they reach stages requiring expensive, extensive treatments. He also founded his own record label, owned the company that manufactured his records and he purchased a beer brewery in Baltimore. These feats were unheard of for an African-American in the 1960’s. On Dec.11,1964, Cooke was approached by shadowy figures who wanted to buy into his lucrative businesses. Sam decline the offer by saying ‘ I like being my own man.’ Later that evening, Cooke left a popular night club with a beautiful Euro Asian woman named Lisa Boyer. According to Boyer, Cooke drove her to a motel in South Central and tried to rape her, when she broke free, Cooke allegedly chased her through the courtyard. When she reached the managers office, Cooke irrational behavior, she would pull out a gun and shoot him four times, he would die instantly. This was the offical story given to the medias around the world. After a brief trial, the jury deliberated for 15 minutes and found a verdict of justifiable homicide. Both were freed. Cooke family hired an private investigator who uncovered the following facts: Rumors says Cooke had dated Elisa Boyer three weeks proir to his murder despite the fact that numerous people warned him about her colorful past which included prostiution. If Cooke was dating her, why would he try to rape her? Singer Etta James revealed in her book”Rage to Survive,” that Cooke was so badly beaten that his head was decapitated from his shoulders, his hands were broken and crushed, his nose was smasshed and he had a two inch bump on his head. These injuries were never explained and a woman could not inflict these type of injuries.Bertha Franklin had a .32 registered in her name yet Cooke was killed with a .22. Cooke’s widow married Bobby Womack 3 months after his death. Cooke’s wife also sold the Sam Cooke publishing catalogue to a Jewish businessman for $103,000. This catalogue currently generates $3-$5 million a year. Nine facesfive black, four white-peered from the pages, recording an historic first. Never before had a Southern city elected a black council majority do its business. The Afro-American‟s response was both a measure of the momentary euphoria and a foreshadowing of the bitterness to come. “An era dominated by narrow-minded, racist politicians who served only the white elite and their business interests at the expense and suffering of black people and poor white people, has ended…hopefully forever,” wrote Editor Raymond Boone.(Richmond Free press) Black progress in Virginia‟s capital has fallen shy of expectations. To be sure, the political shift has brought a tide of black faces to city hall and a few city contracts to minority-owned firms. But the transfer of power from whites to blacks has proved more painful and the acquisition of power less absolute than many blacks envisioned. A voting majority at city hall has done nothing to erase segregation in the high-toned, azalea-filled neighborhoods of west Richmond, where household income is four times that of the city as a whole. Nor has it eliminated the knots of unemployed black men, standing idly at midday amidst the abandoned houses and garbage-strewn lots of the East End and North side. It has not stopped a steady erosion of white support for public schools. And it has not reduced the number of black Richmonders who live in poverty. City council is now back in the hands of white majority and the citizens of Richmond are looking for great things to happen but as for the black communities they must keep hope alive because black leadership has ruined the black side of Richmond………….. City amends towing charges Citizens came out to city council meeting in protest to the increasing of towing fees of towed vehicles from private property. Some of the complaints included administration fees, finding your vehicle after being towed, daily storage fees, and how many have lost their vehicles to towing companies because fees added up faster than they could raise the money. Under the current code, the most they can charge for that initial tow is $65.00, but the city has raised it to $125.00. The only person to speak in favor of the raise other than towing company’s representatives was the President of The Jeff Davis Civic Association Charles Willis, why? With vehicle and fuel costs on the rise-it sounds like a fair enough deal say’s a Capital Garage representative. What do you think ? Ms.Maggie’s Seafood gone ! Maggie Walker said “Let us put our moneys together; let us put our money out at usury among ourselves, and reap the benefit ourselves,” Walker said in a 1901 speech “Let us have a bank that will take the nickels and turn them into dollars.” Two years later, St. Luke Penny Savings bank was formed, with Walker as its president. By 1913, assets had grown to over $300,000, and she presided over the flourishing black community of Jackson Ward, sometimes called the Harlem of the South. It was home to five other black-owned banks and scores of other African-American-owned businesses. She made loans to black businesses, she made loans to students, she made loans to people to buy houses, and she made it easy to get loans. Walker also started a weekly newspaper, and a department store that ultimately failed after the white community boycotted it and its suppliers. While many of the largest black-owned banks went under during the Great Depression, Walker’s bank survived, in part by merging with two smaller, black-owned banks in 1930, when it was renamed Consolidated Bank & Trust. The bank did great and made money for years then when integration happen in the 60’s black money started leaving the black community and began to circulate in other communities instead of the black community. It’s been rumored that back when blacks were getting jobs in the major factories like Phillip Morris , American Tobacco, Reynolds Metal and were buying homes, cars and other major items Consolidated never push for their business and many mortgages and car loans were made by Bank of Virginia, Richmond Bank, United Virginia Bank and loan companies. It’s rumored that Consolidated preferred to loan money to Teachers, Lawyers, Doctors and other professional. It’s also rumored that your banking business would be all over the street. So it’s not surprising that Claireece Precious Jones is one of the most cogently-developed characters this reviewer has ever come upon in the many novels read and reviewed on this platform. At times, it was difficult to read this story without feeling startled over the gritty reality of what life must be like for someone like Precious Jones. However, it’s the act of motherhood that leads this illiterate, physically-sexually-emotionally abused single mother to push for something better- a powerful reality-message to others caught up in life-situations that are similar to precious Jones. Overall, PUSH carries a potent message of hope, self-discovery, and most of all, redemptive liberation. Author, Sapphire, is a noted ‘performance poet’, and it comes across in her inimitable style of perceptive, sometimes elegiac, form of storytelling. PUSH is an 9 unforgettable story….well-worthy of adaptation to screen, and this reviewer can’t wait to see the movie! On a Reviewer’s Scale of 1 though 10- with one being a devastatingly-bad-read and ten being an awesomely-wonderful-read- PUSH scores a 10! www.gloriatayloredwards.com THINGS NOT TALKED ABOUT, BUT EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT! Jermaine Jackson married Brother Randy girlfriend and then divorces her. Rev. James Cleveland Popular preacher, recording artist and pastor, Rev. James Cleveland died in 1991 in Culver City, California. Though his death often recognized as having been a result of heart failure, there has been an enduring controversy as to whether or not Cleveland actually succumbed to Aidsrelated complications. Subsequent to these rumors circulating, Christopher Harris, a former member of Cleveland’s church levied allegations of homosexuality and pedophilia against Cleveland in a 1994 news article. Harris claims he was 13 when he started his sexual encounters with Cleveland, it was not molestation. Nor, he said, he was not his first such encounter with a man. He says that they were typical of the secretive lifestyle of many of the people to whom he was exposed, “People in (Cleveland’s) inner circle knew, people at church knew,” he said. “But they pretended it didn’t exist. Harris who has HIV filed suit against Cleveland estate alleging 5 years of sexual contact that ended with Harris testing positive for HIV. The case was settled out of court. The terms prohibit him from discussing the settlement, but he is free to discuss his life with Cleveland. According to Margaret Maldonado in her book, “Jackson Family Values,” Jermaine Jackson didn’t want her to forge out a career, instead, he wanted her barefoot and pregnant despite the fact, he wasn’t allegedly, bringing any money into the household. Maldonado would go on to produce “The Jacksons: An American Dream. When the series became a ratings success, she got other offers. Maldonado has 2 sons by Jermaine. After breaking up with her, Jermaine married Randy’s girlfriend Alijandra. This act of betrayal left Randy emotionally wrecked. Randy has 2 kids by Alijandra. Another new face at the Jackson house was a baby name Dante, whom Joseph brought into the family. While no one was claiming paternity, the baby called Jermaine “daddy’ and Alijandra “mommy” despite the fact that Alijandra had not been recently pregnant. Joseph remains silent on the issue and Jermaine has divorced Alijandra and married Halima Rashid. The Jacksons have a TV show call The Jackson: A family Dynasty. This program was filmed all year as they mourned Michael’s death in June. Denny Terrio host of “Dance Fever sued billionaire Merv Griffin for sexual harassment. The 11.3 million dollar case was later dismissed. Terro hosted his own Disco radio show on the Sirius Network. In 1991 Brent Plott filed a 250 million dollar palimony suit against Merv Griffin, claiming “I gave him sex, companionship, emotional support and anything else he wanted. I traveled the world with him as a sexual play thing, his case was dismissed. According to Atlanta talk show hostess Alexyss Tylor “Jackie Wilson raped her underage mother, and she is the product of that rape”. This is not the first time rape allegations have been leveled against singer Jackie Wilson. Patti Labelle stated in her book that Wilson attempted to sexually assault her until someone rescued her. By the time Wilson was 18, he had fathered 9 kids. Throughout his life span he fathered 17 kids in total with numerous women. ************************************************************ Join King Salim Khalfani Monday’s on WCLM RADIO 1450am Ready for a Revolution Radio Show at 5pm 10 GOSPEL SPOTLIGHT 6 R’s Visions Raymond Lindsey Sr. P.O. [email protected] COVER (804) 651-8546 You know when most people think of the words cover, covering, or covered, other words such as blanket, a bathrobe, a pot lid, and umbrella, even a house comes to mind. In today’s economy being what it is, words like security, insurance, financial stability, and health care are truly on our minds. The bottom line is we want protection, a shield, and safety. We really want to be covered. “For All Your Religious Needs” 18 East Broad Street Richmond, VA 23219 As we (the people) are transforming as a nation we continue to face obstacles in our personal and professional lives. Let me be the first to state to you “I AM PROUD OF ALL OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS”. None of us can say we got here on our own, made it through alone, and can leave here without the hand of the Almighty God Himself. We need each other whether we agree with each other or not. Look at what has happened to us over the past hundred years. We were originally thought of as animals and dumb, later captured into slavery, abused, tormented, and killed. Though freed, we were turned against each other, educated by segregation and molestation. Then finally given the right to vote, to make good money, buy land and build fine homes. Now! In 2008 this world elected the first African American president. A minority who has now become part of the majority of possibilities, and victories our ancestors fought so hard for. To me, this is historic and we are history. We are still making testimonies ya’ll on how we overcame. Oh! But we almost lost it. But now it’s back: the gleam in our children’s eyes, tears of joy in the old ones eyes, and a boost of strength to the once weak, fearful, and broken hearted is back. We can’t leave this place of renewed joy and power. A covering is needed right now while our belief is at its highest. God has done it again. Right in the middle of time where folk literally turned against themselves, their children, marriages, family members, hard work, family values, and morals. God has given us hope by showing us victory once again. Yes, I know that we have all experienced a lot of what this life can throw at us. Like the hidden generational mess, accidental, freaky, unimaginable, and life changing stuff. Can we recover from the tragedy? Can we try again to make something from nothing? YES WE CAN! We all need to forgive ourselves for the stuff we got ourselves into, trying to be grown. We need to forgive others too, because hurt people-hurt people and then cover each other, shield, protect, and secure each other. We need patience with our children and with others, time with our children and in our neighborhood. Begin teaching healthy, moral living to our children and with their friends, as we the villages begin to raise each other. You see prejudices have taken on a new face. When you look in the mirror, it’s really you and I. (804) 643-1987 Toll Free: 1-877-226-5885 COMMITED TO EXCELLENCE 50th Years of Service C.L.
