In 1475 a Danish Knight founded a fortress and named it Olavinlinna after
St Olaf of Norway. Today this delightful town is the lakeside setting for a
sophisticated Opera Festival. Performances are given in the courtyard of
Olavinlinna castle, remarkable for being the oldest surviving building in Finland.
The birthplace of Rossini, Pesaro holds an annual festival in honour of its
most famous son.
