St. Edward’s NEWSLETTER Issue 3 • 2nd October 2015 Issue3• 2nd October 2015 Gospel Reading: Mark 10:13-16 Parent Consultation Evening Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary time People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” “Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced the children and blessed them, placing his hands on them. Are you prepared to “accept the kingdom of God like a child”? We tend to think that the more knowledge of God we accumulate, the more lovable we will be in God’s eyes, or we are persuaded to believe that the more grace we build up, the more God will find us acceptable for eternal life. However, Jesus praises the children because they have none of that; they have no personal accomplishments that would make them stand out above others. This is how we must approach heaven – with the heart of a child. Take a moment to acknowledge yourself as a child of God, as completely dependent upon mercy rather than human resourcefulness. Parent Consultation Evening for all children will take place on the th th 6 and 7 of October 2015.. 3.00pm – 6.30pm Letters explaining which time slots are available will follow in due course. We look forward to meeting parents and carers to discuss how your children have settled into their new classes. And finally… In Newham, we are very lucky that every child in our school is given a free school lunch every day. But did you know that if you apply for free school meals you can raise £1,320 for our school. Can you imagine the amount of extra funds we would receive if all our pupils were eligible? What’s more it will not affect your claim for Welfare Benefits! Please complete the online Eat For Free registration forms for free school meals, even if your child does not have school meals. The web address to complete this form is as follows: http://www.newham.gov.uk/Pages/Services/Free-school-meals.aspx You will need to go onto the free school meals page and click on the ‘Apply For Free Schools Meals’ link. . Thank you to all the parents who attended our Parent Information Evening held on Wednesday 23rd September. On Friday 25 September, there was an extra buzz of excitement at our afternoon Show and Tell assembly. While the rest of the year groups expertly spoke about all the exciting topics they had studied and all the new things they had learnt, year 6 pupils were unusually impatient. All were waiting with baited breathe to hear who would be St Edwards Head Boy and Head Girl. I hope the information that we shared was useful and gave you an insight into life at St. Edwards We congratulate Daniel and Hilary and wish them the best of success in their new roles. Their first priority will be in choosing members to join them within the Teaching & Learning Committee. th The look of amazement on the faces of both Daniel and Hilary spoke of the shock and joy at achieving this highest accolade. Joy turned to tears as parents and grandparents were brought into the hall by Mr. Mabey. Not a dry eye was seen in the hall. God Bless, Mr. Mabey (Head Teacher) ‘Following Christ we reach our goals’ ‘Following Christ we reach our goals’ Issue 3 • 2nd October 2015 . Issue 3 • 2nd October 2015 We’re all going on a “Teddy” Hunt! oFootballFIRST WEEK Forget Bears, pupils in St. Edwards were hunting around the school in search of Teddy last week. As the picture shows he is keeping us all on our best behaviour by reminding us how to conduct ourselves in school. Don’t worry Parents, we haven’t forgotten about you. Look for the giant sized Teddy welcoming you to the school in the front reception, We’re all going on a Teddy Hunt. What a beautiful doggie! Premiership Footballer visits Thistle Class On the 23rd of September 2015, Thistle Cass was very lucky to have Ibrahima Sonko, a premiership footballer, spend the day with them. Ibrahima decided to visit the class when he heard that they were learning about Walter Tull as part of our celebration of Black History Month. It turns out that Ibrahima’s Grandfather was a very good friend of Walter, who had received a letter from him in January 1918, two months before he was killed on the battle field of World War One. He brought the letter to read to the class and answered all the questions they had for him- it was brilliant! Ibrahima also helped them to solve a dilemma regarding A Footballer Called Flip. Flip comes all the way from Ireland and absolutely adores football. However, his coach thinks he is too short and won’t even consider him for the local football team. When Flip heard that the class had a premiership footballer visiting, he sent them a video link pleading that the class email him tips to help him get on the team. As can be seen by the photos, Ibrahima and Mr. Read taught them an abundance of skills that they were able to pass on! Soup, Soup, Glorious Soup! Our nursery children had fun picking, chopping, cooking and eating the vegetables grown in their garden. By the look on their faces it was truly scrumptious. ‘Following Christ we reach our goals’ ‘Following Christ we reach our goals’
