Harunasan Takasaki Western Gunma ❶ The Lucky Town Takasaki City Misato Shibazakura Park MAP/D-1 Dosojin Statues of Kurabuchi MAP/B-1 There are 114 Dosojin (guardian deities of travelers) statues around Kurabuchi that were built by the villages long ago. They are symbols of their wish for a peaceful life and a safe journey for travelers. Located on the northern tip of the vast Kanto Plain, Takasaki City is one of Gunma’s major cities. Byakue Dai-kannon and Cherry Blossoms Haruna Fruit Road MAP/D-3 MAP/C-2,D-2 Many local fruit stalls stand along this road. You can enjoy picking fruit such as Japanese nashi pears. Red, pink and white carpet phlox are planted in a spiral pattern over the hillside. This park is designed to resemble a pink hagoromo – a legendary robe of feathers belonging to an angel. Best season: early April to early May The Three Stelae of Kozuke (Kozuke Sanpi) The White-Robed Goddess of Mercy statue stands 41.8m tall and weighs roughly 6,000 tons. It is well known as a place of good luck for singles, as it is said that visitors will be blessed with fortune in finding a suitable partner. In spring, the blossoms of 3,000 cherry trees come into full bloom. Best season: April These three ancient stone monuments have been nominated in Japan for UNESCO Memory of the World listing. They are one of Japan’s most precious treasures for learning about our ancestors’ lives. Takasaki Pageant of Starlight MAP/D-3 Haruna-jinja Shrine Downtown Takasaki sparkles with thousands of tiny lights from late November to late December. The stunning view from the observation deck on the 21st floor of City Hall is a must-see. Lake Harunako MAP/D-3 MAP/C-1 This magnificent shrine is one of the most well-known spiritual spots in the Kanto region. The amazing honden (main sanctuary) blends in to the boulders surrounding it. The shrine’s harmony with its natural surroundings is one of its main charms. Haruna Shrine is even more alluring under a veil of snow. MAP/C-1 Enjoy everything from fishing to trekking. In summer a fireworks display takes place over the lake. Roughly 3,000 fireworks light up the night sky. There are 250m high wisteria trellis and a sample garden with 45 kinds of Japanese wisterias. Enjoy various shapes and colors wisterias. Best season : late April to middle May Colorful Japanese Wisteria and Winter Cherry Blossoms Fujioka City Japanese wisteria flourishes in full bloom in the spring, and Fuyuzakura (winter cherry blossoms) in the winter. This area also offers many fascinating events such as a historic summer festival and a fruit picking excursion. Sakurayama Park MAP/E-4 MAP/D-4 There are 7,000 Fuyuzakura trees and autumn leaves. The Fuyuzakura is designated as a national place of scenic beauty and a natural treasure. Best season : middle November to middle December Fujioka Festival MAP/E-3 This summer festival is resident’s participation event like the Miyamikoshi-Togyo a tradition of Suwa-jinja Shrine. Lake Sannako Takayama-sha Sericulture School (World Heritage Site) MAP/D-4 It was an educational institution for silk cultivation founded by Chogoro Takayama. He established seion-iku, a method of carefully regulating ventilation, temperature and humidity. Students from all over Japan studied at this institution. Tsukamoto Organic Blueberry Farm MAP/D-4,E-4 Onishi Summer Festival This is known as a mecca for catching Japanese crucian carp in Japan. Anglers from all over Japan gather and Japanese Crucian Carp Fishing Tournament is held in September. MAP/E-4 This festival is held in middle July. The Shindenzaka Run in which each team must pull their dashi (parade floats) up a hill and the Yoriai in which five dashi meet up and play festive music are full of excitement. MAP/E-4 From middle July to middle September, visitors can pick safe blueberries grown organically. Raran Fujioka Roadside Station Fujioka JCT Fujioka IC Tanofuji Tourist Strawberry Park 254 Tsuchi to Hi no Sato Park MAP/D-4 In this facility, visitors can make one-of-a-kind handicrafts like ceramics, bamboo ware, glassware and staining with experts. Tanofuji Tourist Strawberry Park MAP/E-3 From middle January to May, visitors can enjoy picking and eating fully ripe "yayoihime" a breed of strawberries in Gunma. 6 Sakurayama Tourist Mandarin Orange Orchards MAP/D-4 Four farms are located here. 4,500 mandarin orange trees have been planted on a 2.5 ha orchard. The main sanctuary holds a unique design of being located at the bottom of the approach. It has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. This city is situated in southwest Gunma. There are Tomioka Silk Mill (World Heritage Site) and Mt. Myogisan (one of Japan's Three Scenic Spots). Tomioka Silk Mill (World Heritage Site) MAP/C-3 This facility was a government-run model spinning mill and was established by the Meiji government in 1872. It achieved the mass production of high- qualit y raw silk and made significant contributions to the spread of silk all around the world. Mt. Myogisan Myogi Roadside Station MAP/B-3 MAP/B-3 This is one of the Japan's Three Scenic Spots. It is covered with fantastically shaped rocks and attracts many mountain climbers visit there. Autumn leaves best season is last October to middle November. Sunflower Field at Lake Nyuko The shops offer local specialty products such as konnyaku, Shimonita scallions, and mushrooms. The "maitake gohan" (rice with maitake mushrooms) is also popular. Ice creams with variety of flavours for each season are appealing as well. MAP/C-3 During the summer, this lakeside turns yellow. Best season : early August Gunma Safari Park MAP/C-4 Wild animals roam in this park. An excursion bus for feeding the animals called Pakkun-go is a popular attraction (requires additional fee). Famous Spots for Viewing Cherry Blossoms Tomioka City has several famous spots for cherry blossoms such as Tomioka Silk Mill, Nukisaki-jinja Shrine, Lake Nyuko, Lake Oshioko, and Ichimine Park. The Shidare cherry blossoms at Myogi-jinja Shrine are also magnificent. Horumon-age It's a deep-fried fish sausage on a skewer. The salty-sweet sauce makes the dish more delicious. Mt.Myogisan Myogi Roadside Station Myogi-jinja Shrine Myogi-jinja Shrine MAP/B-3 It is located on Mt. Hakuunzan, the main peak of Mt. Myogisan and has a history of 1500 years. In the fall, a cosmos field spreads across the area. 8 9 Annaka Western Gunma ❹ Usui Pass Railway Heritage Park MAP/B-2 This railroad theme park is packed with the history of the Usui Line, a rack railway system that is no longer in use. The Flower, Pass, and Railroad Heritage Village Annaka City This city borders Takasaki and Tomioka in Gunma and Karuizawa Town in Nagano. It has abundant natural surroundings such as Mt. Myogisan, Usui Pass, and onsen. Aputo no Michi MAP/B-2 The former railroad tracks crossing the Usui Pass have been made into a nature trail. Enjoy natural surroundings such as "Meganebashi" (Spectacles Bridge)", which is an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and Lake Usuiko. Ansei Toashi This is a Japanese-style marathon held in the Edo period. People not only dress up like samurai but wear various other costumes. It is fun to watch as well as to run. When: Second Sunday of May Robai no Sato Toge no Kamameshi One of the most popular ekiben lunch boxes sold at in Japan. The carefully selected ingredients and a homemade taste. Village Arafune Cold Storage (World Heritage Site) MAP/A-3 Mountain Hike Enjoy hiking the mountains of Nanmoku Village, which consists of a series of low mountains all year round. Arafune Cold Storage is the remains of Japan's largest facility for storing silkworm eggs. It makes use of cold air which passes through the space between large rocks. It made a significant contribution to the advancement of the silk industry, as it allowed silkworm eclosion to be carried out multiple times per year.
