Stated Meeting: First Thursday of the month; 730PM
South West Lodge Trestle Board - Volume 128 Issue 12
Monthly Newsletter
FROM THE EAST….
It is now December and time to say
Merry Christmas and wish for a
Happy New Year to all. Let me
honestly state that I have tremendous
appreciation of the support coming
from all angles; Past Masters,
brethren, candidates, sisters and
including those visitors who frequently
come. Each and every one had been a
great asset in the accomplishment of
our many projects and goals. It is my
hope and joy to see this excellence of
support continue for our incoming
officers.
Enclosed with this trestle board is a letter outlining
another project that is still about to evolve. A South West Lodge
addressed envelope is included in the package. Please consider a
heartfelt support for this gigantic project. This project will only be
accomplished through the effort and support of all of us. We are
counting on you. Should you decide otherwise just simply return
the envelope with or without explanation.
Last year Worshipful brother Danny Pepa’s motto:
HARMONY AT LAST coincidentally coincided with my motto: ON
THE LEVEL. I firmly believe that our lodge had shown great
success is because of our wonderful members. Let us continue to
render our best support for Our Lodge and watch it prosper for
many years to come. Those who will come after us will then be
proud to say that the leaders and members of the past have left a
legacy worthy of all imitations.
Although this may be my last column in this trestle board
does not represent the idea that I will be completely gone. I
promise to return the favor that I have enjoyed as exemplified by
our endearing group of Past Masters.
FRATERNALLY….By the Square
Ed Yaptangco, Master
ENTERED APPRENTICE MASON
Bro. Francisco Ragsac

FROMTHE WEST…
As the year draws to its
end, many pause to reflect the
events which have transpired
throughout. These times for
reflection can be seen in the
various religions as holidays.
Many of the World’s religions
will be celebrating various days
of observance which allows the
individual to reflect on the past,
present and the future.
December 8 has come
to be the day Japanese Zen
Buddhists observe the enlightenment of the historical
Buddha. Traditionally, this observation, sometimes called
"Bodhi Day", was held on the 8th day of a 12th lunar
month, which often falls in January. When Japan adopted
the Gregorian calendar in the 19th century, Japanese
Buddhists adopted fixed days for many holidays, including
Buddha's birthday. Western Buddhists of many schools
appear to be adopting December 8 as Bodhi Day, also.
Bodhi means "awakened" in Sanskrit, although in English
we tend to say "enlightened."
The eight-day Jewish celebration known as
Hanukkah or Chanukah, which begins at sunset on
December 6th and ends the evening of December 14,
commemorates the rededication during the second century
B.C. of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to
legend Jews had risen up against their Greek-Syrian
oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which
means “dedication” in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev
on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or
December. Often called the Festival of Lights, the holiday is
celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional
foods, games and gifts.
The December solstice is on either December 20,
21, 22 or 23. It is called Winter Solstice in the Northern
Hemisphere, where it is the shortest day of the year. In the
Southern Hemisphere, it is the Summer Solstice and the
longest day of the year. December Solstice in San Diego,
California, U.S.A. is on Monday, December 21, 2015 at 8:49
PM PST.
Pancha Ganapati is a modern Hindu festival that
lasts for five days, from December 21 to December 25. It
honors Ganesha, one of the most worshiped Hindu deities.
Ganesha is venerated as the patron of arts and culture. The
festival of Pancha Ganapati was created in 1985 by Sivaya
Subramuniyaswami (born Robert Hansen), an Americanborn convert to Hinduism. The celebration was conceived as
a Hindu alternative to December holidays (Christmas,
Kwanza, Hanukkah etc.).
The Christian holiday taken from the Roman Pagan
winter solstice festival of Saturnalia, is celebrated on
December 25th. This holiday is meant for Christians to
honor the birth of their saviour, Jesus Christ. Christmas
evolved over two millennia into a worldwide religious and
secular celebration, incorporating many pre-Christian,
pagan traditions into the festivities along the way. Today,
Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together
and exchange gifts.
Dr. Maulana Karenga, professor and chairman of
Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach,
created Kwanzaa in 1966. After the Watts riots in Los
Angeles, Dr. Karenga searched for ways to bring AfricanAmericans together as a community. He founded US, a
cultural organization, and started to research African “first
fruit” (harvest) celebrations. Karenga combined aspects of
PAGE 2 0F 3
several different harvest celebrations, such as those of the
Ashanti and those of the Zulu, to form the basis of Kwanzaa.
The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya
kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili. Kwanzaa also
has seven basic symbols which represent values and concepts
reflective of African culture. The holiday begins on December
26 and ends on January 1. An African feast, called a Karamu,
is held on December 31.
Though different and distinct, the holidays which are
celebrated by the Brethren around the world, there are many
particular themes which all the holidays share with each
other.
All the holidays encourage self-reflection, bring
families together, and to remember the welfare of their
neighbors. Let us remember, no matter which religion or
tradition we celebrate, that in the end, we all want the same
or similar things for ourselves, our family and our community.
Fraternally,
Jude Cabrera, Senior Warden
FROM THE SOUTH…
As we reach the end of this year,
it is time to reflect on the good
deeds
of
many
deserving
brethren
and
convey
my
gratitude to them. The job of a
Junior
Warden
has
truly
exposed me to a good variety of
tremendously
incredible
challenges. I am greatly thankful
and equally appreciative of the
support everyone has rendered
these past 11 months. Not only
inside the lodge room but as well as in refreshment
preparation challenges involved at many of our lodge's
events. The experiences have provided me with extra
knowledge of lodge officer’s duty as well as some
culinary practices. Our Worshipful Master, Eduardo
Yaptangco, has given me the encouragement and
unconditional support which I truly appreciate. There
are yet many individual brothers to acknowledge but in
order not to miss and offend anyone I will speak to each
of them individually.
It is quite an honor to say that in our Lodge it is
such a common scene to have a tremendous show of
Past Masters at every facet of lodge events. They are
there on fellowships, degree conferrals, and many
special events. These are people who are always ready
and dedicated to extend a helping hand for any cause;
financially, mentoring, manual labor, etc.
Hopefully, I have earned everyone’s trust as I
continue to aspire for the Oriental Chair and serve our
Lodge for many more years.
Fraternally,
Percival Tiu, Junior Warden
