Newsletter #4 Grand Court of Washington Order of Amaranth January 2014 Message from your Grand Royal Matron, H.L. Carolie Larson: The holidays are over, and I thoroughly enjoyed having my Amaranth family visit my home in December. This “Sailing into the Future with Amaranth” year has been very successful. Our goals are on target with the raising of funds for Diabetes and Scholarship. The Benevolent Emergency Fund and Wounded Warrior Projects are doing great. We now have nearly completed the first 10 months of our Grand Court Year and are entering the final two. The last three Official Visits are Burien January 27, Everett - February 6, and then Capitol – February 8. The Capitol Court Official Visit is preceded by a Group Meeting and practices for the Associate Matrons/Associate Patrons and the Grand Officers. Come and support these Courts. Grand Court is coming soon on March 12 to March 15 in Everett at the Holiday Inn. On the evening of Wednesday, March 12, a fun night will be held. Get your talent or skits ready and let Sandy Gordon know. The practices for the Grand Court Session will be held afterwards. As a reminder, Committee Chairs need to get there reports in by February 15 to the Grand Secretary and the Chairman of Address and Distribution, Virginia Anicker. See you all at our finale of Grand Court. Carolie Larson, Grand Royal Matron NFC Champions Seattle Seahawks GO HAWKS!!! Message from Grand Royal Patron Jack Hutchins: Membership: From the Constitution: Sec. 35 Page 96 Objections to Petitions “Three members may object to the receiving of a petition for Initiation or Affiliation; such objection must be stated in writing, before the report of the Investigation Committee is read, and presented to the Secretary of the Court to be read to the Court.” Sec. 36 Page 96 Objections to Initiation: “Initiation of a Candidate shall be deferred if objection to such Initiation be made in writing and signed by three or more Members of the Court in good standing, stating good and sufficient reason for such objection and presenting it to the Royal Matron before the Candidate is presented for the Degree.” These two options are available to the members if they have an objection to a Petitioner or a Candidate. In the first option, the letter is read prior to the reading of the Investigating Committee report. It allows for those with an objection to state their reasons for their objections prior to the balloting procedure. The main part on this is that it is prior to the balloting and the members may hear the reason for the objection thus allowing them to decide how to vote. IF this procedure is not followed the members still may ballot. IF the ballot is unfavorable however according to the Constitution: Page 91 Sec. 29 BALLOTING subsection (E)” Only one individual ballot can be taken for each Petitioner. An adverse individual ballot cannot be reconsidered and no member of the Subordinate Court, the Grand Court or Supreme Council may overturn or demand the recasting of an adverse individual ballot under any circumstances.” This means that once a petitioner is balloted upon and rejected there is no going back. They may however repetition either the same or a different Court after a period of 6 months. The second option is after a favorable ballot but prior to initiation. It must however happen prior to the beginning of the Initiation Ceremony. As an organization, we need members, as a member of a larger family of Organizations we need to be mindful of the repercussions of either objecting to or adversely balloting on a potential new member. Sometimes our “disagreements” with a potential member are not as important as the results that happen when a candidate is blackballed. Remember you obligation and vote “for the good of the Order”. IF YOU WERE BLACKBALLED, WOULD YOU REPETITION AGAIN OR JUST GO TO ANOTHER ORGANIZATION? HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? Jack Hutchins, Grand Royal Patron Message from Grand Assoc. Matron, H.L. Lori Kellison and Grand Assoc. Patron, S.K. Fred Docker No message was received but I’m sure they are extremely busy getting ready for their year. Diana Esterly Newsletter Chair Message from Grand Conductress H.L. Rene’ Buchanan A note from the Grand Conductress, Where has the year gone! As we make all of our plans and reservations for Grand Court this year in Everett’s Holiday Inn, we need to remember that this is a time to welcome all of our outof-state guests and to let them see how friendly and fun our Grand Court is. In making next year another success, I have been working on next year’s ways and means projects. In one of the projects we will have a fifteen month calendar on sell this year. The months will be March of 2014 – May of 2015. I need everyone to send me any information of events, installations, Official Visits, Friends nights, special fund raisers, so, if you have a date and you let me know this date it will be put in the calendar. You can e-mail me your information at [email protected]. We will announce a wonderful Grand Court Fund Raiser at our Grand Court session with one of our members winning a Grand Prize. See everyone at Grand Court René Buchanan, Grand Conductress Message from Grand Assoc. Conductress H.L. Cathy Smith Mouseketeers The Mouseketeers have been busy getting organized and now have their Guidelines completed. Mouseketeers have attended many Friends Nights enabling us to get to know each other better. For a fund raiser the Mouseketeers are selling lace gloves mostly with fingers but some without; and we are selling fans. We hope to have a table at Grand Court. The Mouseketeers will be hosting the Hospitality Room at Grand Court, stop by and see us. Cathy Smith, GAC Message from Grand Treasurer H.L. Carolyn Barnett: To the Members of Grand Court: I have enjoyed being Grand Treasurer—both times, and I have enjoyed working with all four of the Grand Secretaries who served simultaneous terms with me. I am announcing that I will not stand for Grand Treasurer 2014-2015 at Grand Court this coming March. This has been a long thought out decision and was not made lightly. I feel it is in my own best interests, as well as those of Grand Court for me to step aside. For your consideration I list the qualities needed in for a competent Grand Treasurer: Familiarity with NUMBERS Basic knowledge of bookkeeping—the difference between a debit and a credit: reconciliation of a bank statement: with a check that is supposed to be divided between 3 philanthropic projects in two different banks—what should you do? Computer knowledge of Word, Excel, essential; Quick Books would really help. Do you check your computer for mail at least once a day? Do you work well with others? (Work with; not boss them.) Can you laugh even when it seems things are overwhelming and your head is under water? Lastly, do you recognize the following definition: “ . . .to be slow or late about doing something that should be done : to delay doing something until a later time because you do not want to do it, etc.; to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done.” If this sounds really familiar, if you hear people us the word “procrastination” in describing you—please think long and hard before you stand for Grand Treasurer. You must be heedful of your responsibilities and do them promptly with no one needing to remind you of basics (deposits, reconciliations, writing checks, double checking with the Grand Secretary—it should all be done automatically. If you are interested please call me with questions; you can visit me and I’ll walk you through the processes. 253-929-9399 206-941-1594(c) [email protected] Fraternally, Carolyn Message from Grand Secretary H.L. Ramona McNeil: Court Secretaries, Your Annual Reports are due on January 31, 2014 in my office. If I do not receive them until after the 5th day of February there will be a penalty assessed to your Court. This could keep your Court and its members from voting and taking part in our Grand Court. We want to see everyone at Grand Court and able to participate. All Courts & Members; It would greatly appreciated if your donations to all Philanthropies would be to the Grand Secretary by March 1, 2014. SK Jack GRP wants to give his check to the Wounded Warrior Project on Thursday evening and would like the total then. I appreciate your assistance in this matter. Ramona McNeil, DSRM Grand Secretary Message from the Membership Committee: Membership Amaranth needs new members. Every year we lose more members in death then we gain new members by initiation. We need to be open to new members and support them. It is sad when we initiate new members and they never come back. But what is even sadder is when we don’t even allow interested members to join who are active in other Masonic Groups. If you have objections to someone who has petitioned for membership there is a procedure, go to your Supreme Constitution Part IV Rules and Regulations Governing Subordinate Courts, Section 35 OBJECTIONS TO PETITIONS: Three members may object to the receiving of a Petition for Initiation or Affiliation; such objection must be stated in writing, before the report of the Investigation Committee is read, and presented to the Secretary of the Court to be read to the Court. If there are questions about a prospective member, check the Penal Code of the Supreme Council Order of the Amaranth Incorporated. Article I – Offenses, Section 1 Chargeable Offenses. This is a guideline that you can follow when considering Objecting to a Petition. The Membership Committee would like to recognize members at Grand Court who have been first line signers on new petitions and Courts who have had the most new members this year. If the secretaries of the Courts would please send this information to me I would greatly appreciate it. My e-mail address is [email protected] Cathy Smith, GAC Membership Co-Chair Message from Grand Lecturer H.L. Judy Mosier Honored Ladies and Sir Knights, Grand Court is fast approaching. I have been honored to be your Grand Lecturer. Our ritual is what sets us apart from many other groups to which you may belong. The proper understanding and performance of your office will present our ritualistic work as our Founders intended. I know many of you do not come to Amaranth for the ritualistic component, however, I am charged with trying to help you, through, the Assistant Grand Lecturers to do your ritualistic work as correctly as we can, so please study your parts. Everything you need to know is written in our ritual. It may not be where you expect it, but it is there. Our Grand Court will have many visitors from other jurisdictions and we all want to do our best, not just for our own satisfaction but make our GRM Carolie and GRP Jack proud of their officers. I understand nerves can play a part but if we are prepared and confident in what we are doing it will all go well and if it doesn’t we will have learned what not to do next time. We only open our Grand Court once a year and it is totally different from anything we do in our subordinate Courts. Grand Floor Officers please read through the `Informal Opening of Grand Court beginning on P. 235.It will help us if you remember which officer is in front and behind you, .Pay special attention to the diagram of opening and crowning ceremony on p 238. Please read how you get to your stations as described on the top of p. 242 after the GRM asks you to assume your various stations. Those Grand Officers participating in the Memorial Service review p 255-261. Memorial needs to have precision timing and partner cooperation to be the beautiful tribute it is designed to be to those who are now, Sweet in our Memory.” Please review the diagrams in Memorial on p. 234 and257. If you would like help on any ritual work in your Courts, please let me know or contact your Assistant Grand Lecturer. We are here to help you. This year I have tried to concentrate on the basics, those things we do every meeting. I would love to see some ritualistic competition in our future, but was not able to set it up this year. All we ask of any of our members is that they do their best I can guarantee if you know your work, your meetings will be shorter. All Floor Officers should attend the practice on Wednesday, March 12, at Grand Court in Everett; it is listed in the program at 7:00. Remember do not write out your part. If you have studied and cannot learn it then you will have to use your ritual, but there can be no note cards used during Grand Court ritualistic work. Grand Lecturer, Judy Mosier DSRM PS: From Grand Royal Matron H.L. Carolie: There will be a practice for the Grand Court Floor Officers at Capitol Court on February 8th prior to lunch. If at all possible please try to be there as your presence will make the practice much more efficient. Message from Supreme Royal Matron H.L. Lynda Dobbins regarding a new Court in New York Tue Dec 17, 2013 6:32 am (PST). Posted by: It was my honor to travel over the weekend to Olean, NY to witness the Constituting of a new court. They initiated a number of new and young members and then installed the RM/RP/AM/AP that were appointed to lead this new court. They will guide them until March when they will elect and install a full set of officers. The weather might have been a threat to all of this taking place, but it held off until we got back home. The excitement that was there was catching and I congratulate the Grand Court of New York and their officers for a job WELL DONE!! The GRM, H.L. Jean MacLeod, and the GRP, S.K. Virgilio Guijana, had a dream and it has partially come true. They have dream to constitute two more courts before the end of her year, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Hope other Grand Courts will start dreaming and make their dreams come true. Lynda Dobbins Supreme Royal Matron Akron Court # 5 Akron, Ohio PS: In a message from Grand Fraternal Correspondent H.L. Barbara Waterman: The new Court is Hamilton Court number 2. The original Court that was in Olean has moved to Portville, NY. Message from H.L. Virginia Anicker, Chairman of Addresses and Distribution All Committee Chairs are reminded that reports must be sent to "Addresses and Distribution" Chair, Virginia Anicker, [email protected] either as a PDF file or Word 97, using Ariel 10 font. Snail mail will also be all right. That means everyone who is listed as "chairman" for anything, or a Grand Officer who has to turn in a report. Please remember to make "suggestions" rather than "recommendations" if you have something you would like to see done or changed in the future. February 15th date was announced, but they will be accepted until March 5th. If your work is not finished by that date please send a "partial report". ALL reports must be in for Grand Court to start on time. Advertisement from the Mystical Sirens: Mystical Sirens Treasured Closet The Mystical Sirens will be having a “gently used” formal sale at Grand Court. If you would like to donate formals or other items to the Mystical Sirens please contact H.L. Rene’ Buchanan. We will have some men’s items as well. Stop by and pick up your “treasures”. Requests from H.L. Linda Millo: Into Recycling? Since 2010, our incoming GRM and GRP have given drop bars to the Grand Officers at installation. These are meant for you to have during your Grand year and as a keepsake. However, if you would like to recycle yours, please just return them to Linda Millo when you see her, or bring them to Grand Court and place them in a box in the group selling area outside the Courtroom. Memories? I am asking for your help. Sadly, all the photos collected by our Grand Historian for our State Fair year (2011-2012) have been lost. PGRP Darrel and I would love to have copies of any photos you might have from our special year. Please e-mail or snail mail them to me at [email protected], or deliver them on a disc or jump drive in person to either of us. My home address is not correct in the Official Book. It is: 4516 176th Street SW, E-4, Lynnwood, WA 98037. Thank you for any help you can give, Linda Millo, PGRM Messages from Members: Members: What can be done to encourage members to come to practices. One of the ideas is before a meeting. A lunch or refreshments after or before a practice. What would you like to see practicing for what part of the ritual Have a short meeting and then a practice. These are just ideas, perhaps if the members would express their ideas we just might take care of the lake of participation. One would be that members of the Court that have been an AGL learn to sit on the sidelines and just observe. After a short meeting have a short practice. Mary M. Strous PRM Members: If you have ideas to share about how to get members to come to practices—send them to either H.L. Lori Hanson or to H.L. Diana Esterly to share with everyone. H.L. Betty Harris, GRM of Arizona please contact H.L. Jaime Powell at [email protected] Court News: Greetings One and All from Trinity Court No. 51 and a Very Happy New Year too! We have started 2014 with a BANG as we now meet on the second Saturday of the month with February 8, 2014 being our first meeting of 2014. We changed our Rules and Regulations and they were approved by the Grand Court Rules and Regulations Committee the first part of December 2013. It will be exciting to meet during the day and we hope that many of our members will be able to attend our stated meetings. We are dark in January because the weather here sometimes is not the best this time of year. This January has been like Springtime days with temperatures sometimes in the 40s. Our stated meeting for February 8, 2014 will be Men's Night - the Sir Knights will be making and serving lunch at high noon with the stated meeting at 1 pm. It will be so nice to see daylight after our meeting! You might even come and wear your favorite western attire - and end the afternoon on a high note! Singing the praises of the forthcoming spring season. We are excited at Trinity Court because we will have an initiation at the March 8, 2014 stated meeting to welcome our new member Cladianne Jones. She has been a part of the Masonic Family for over fifty years and we welcome her to Trinity Court. We will also be celebrating St. Patrick's Day with the wearing of the Green. Many Trinity Court members will be going to Grand Court on March 13th, 14th and 15th in Everett, Washington. I can just imagine all the good meals that they will be having there. Have a great time one and all! In April comes the Easter Bunny and a basket full of goodies. Wonder if we will get any candy at our stated meeting on April 12, 2014? Guess we will have to attend the meeting to find out if there are any goodies for the Honored Ladies and Sir Knights. We will have lunch at High Noon, so be prepared for great food! Elections will take place for line officers and we will be having installation in May. Wishing everyone smooth sailing until next time. Diana (from left) Larry Dobbins (husband of SRM), Supreme Royal Matron Lynda Dobbins, Supreme Royal Patron David Ekren, and (wife of SRP) Carol Ekren visited the American Diabetes Association home office in 2013. “Their goal is the same as ours: to get rid of diabetes,” David Ekren says. January 2014 Diabetes Forecast Magazine Golden Dollars--The Order of the Amaranth’s dedication to funding research is legendary Do donations raised through golf outings, bake sales, and 90-year-olds shaking contribution cans outside discount stores add up? Prepare to be impressed. Such efforts, coordinated by the Order of the Amaranth, have raised almost $14 million for diabetes research. The order is a social, fraternal, and philanthropic Masonic organization dedicated to “truth, faith, wisdom, and charity”—and supporting the search for a cure for diabetes. Since 1979, the order’s Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, its philanthropic arm, has raised money exclusively for the American Diabetes Association’s diabetes research program. “There is no volunteer organization with a longer history with the American Diabetes Association that has given at the level of the Order of the Amaranth,” says Association CEO Larry Hausner. “The members set an incredible example, and we are so grateful for the impressive contributions they are making to our mission.” The Order knows that diabetes touches everyone. “There isn’t anybody who isn’t affected by diabetes, whether personally or a Member of the Order of the Amaranth, relative or a friend,” says Lynda Dobbins, the Supreme Royal Matron of the Order. Dobbins, of Hartville, Ohio, should know: She has type 2 diabetes, which developed after she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in 1983. As Supreme Royal Matron, Dobbins travels North America to meet with local courts and support their fund-raising efforts, from grand galas to “kiss-a-pig” events. “Right now we have 356 courts across the country and around the world that are all focused on finding a cure,” she says. Each member’s personal story provides even more motivation. Whenever George “Stoney” Pavlik, the president of the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, travels beyond his home in Mount Union, Pa., he brings along a copy of a 1986 American Diabetes Association book, Children with Diabetes. On the cover is a picture of his daughter, Audra, when she was a little girl. The book is a visual reminder of why he has dedicated his life to raising funds for Diabetes Research. Audra died in 2012 of complications related to type 1 diabetes, at the age of 34. “This is the reason why I’m so dedicated to this,” he says, his voice catching. “There’s an impending tsunami, a puzzle that is pressing the whole medical community. Finally, we might get all the pieces together.” Dobbins says that with every effort, big or small, members of the Order hope they’re one step closer to finding the “golden dollar” that funds the research that will find a cure. Typically, the money the Order gives to the Association supports from three to five researchers each year—more than any other organization working with the ADA. Current researchers funded by Amaranth are looking into helping people with neuropathy regrow nerves and identifying how inflammation may trigger type 1 diabetes, among other topics. This and other research focuses on improving the lives of people living with diabetes and the ultimate goal—finding a cure. ▲ Last fall, Janel Wright, then vice chair of the American Diabetes Association’s Board of Directors; Latino Diabetes Action Council member Irene Smith; and fellow volunteers Marybeth Lacy, Ann Rathbun, and Janice Wall joined more than 200 advocates from across the country in Washington, D.C., to meet with their members of Congress to urge a greater federal investment in the National Institutes of Health. These advocates acknowledged the many advances in treatment and tools to manage diabetes because of NIH research, especially at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. They also made the case that additional investments in NIH and NIDDK are critical to further improve prevention and treatment methods, and ultimately end the diabetes epidemic. I hope it has been informative as well as a little bit of fun. I have been asked to chair the Newsletter Committee again next year. It is a great tool to get information out to our Jurisdiction but I need your help. Please send me any information about your Courts, your members, your events. Anything that you think might be interesting to the membership. If you visit another jurisdiction—whether you are the Grand Representative or not—send me a “report”. We would all like to hear about “how they do it in______.” I will also be continuing the “weekly calendar” reports. If you know of anyone who has “changed their e-mail address or are not currently getting these weekly updates—please ask them to contact me and I’ll put them on the mailing list. One last item. I am putting the calendars together for H.L. Lori and for H.L. Rene. If you don’t send me the information—I can’t put it in the calendar. We are reformatting the calendar so that it is a more usable calendar—smaller and easier to carry in pocket or purse. It will be on sale at Installation at Grand Court. If you want your information in—I must have your information by February 15th. Thank you for your assistance. Fraternally, H.L.
