Join trailblazing scientist Dr. Patricia Wright on her lifelong mission to help these strange and adorable creatures survive in the modern world. A presentation of Warner Bros. ANIMALS OF MAdAgASCAr Madagascar is an island off the coast of Africa. Scientists think it broke off from the African continent about 160 million years ago. It is about the size of Texas and is the fourth largest island in the world. WHy IS IT SpecIAL? Many new species of animals and insects have evolved on Madagascar because it has been isolated from the rest of Africa for so long. About 80% of the animals found in Madagascar do not exist anywhere else on earth. Since more than 90% of their natural habitat has been destroyed, many are endangered. More than 30 different species of lemurs, including the pygmy Mouse Lemur, Hairy-eared Dwarf Mouse Lemur and Aye-Ayes, live in Madagascar. They can travel up to 25 feet in one leap! Because of their declining numbers, the International union for conservation of Nature (IucN) considers lemurs to be the world’s most endangered mammals, noting that— as of 2013—up to 90% of all lemur species face extinction within the next 20 to 25 years. cHAMeLeoNS Almost half of the world’s chameleons (about 60 different species) are found only in Madagascar. Known for their ability to change color, these reptiles vary their appearance in response to changes in temperature, light and mood. chameleons can see to all sides, without moving their heads, by rotating each eye independently. TeNRecS START Figs are a favorite treat of the Ring-Tailed Lemur. Help him through the maze for a delicious meal! When scared, they curl up in a ball and extend spiky hairs to protect themselves from predators, very much like a hedgehog. Most species are nocturnal and have poor eyesight. Their other senses are well developed, however, and they have especially sensitive whiskers. FoSSA The fossa is Madagascar’s largest predator – with a cat-like body and a dog-like nose. It is often said to resemble a small cougar. This endangered animal is a close cousin of the mongoose. About twice the size of a house cat, the fossa primarily hunts lemurs and birds. It has a long tail which helps keep its balance when high up in the trees. The greatest threat to this animal is habitat destruction.
