MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The mandate of SABIS is to provide support
and help to adults with an acquired brain injury
and to provide assistance to family caregivers
so that the adult survivor can live as
independently as possible in the community.
This is done through our dedicated Case
Managers, our Support Services including
support groups, courses for family care givers,
peer mentorship programs and through our
Educational Services. All of these programs
have been strengthened this year through our
support from the provincial government and
our fundraising activities, and I would like to
recognize all of the agencies and supporters
who have made this possible.
I would like to commence by saying
congratulations to SABIS (Southern Alberta
Brain Injury Society) as we start our 30th
year of providing outstanding service and
support to the adults with acquired Brain
Injury. This past year has been one of
transition and I would like to thank all of the
Staff and Volunteers that have contributed to
making this one of our best years. SABIS
now has a new Executive Director, staff that
have been promoted through the
organization, an increased staff level, all
providing continuing and new services to our
clients and members of their families.
2015/16 promises to be an exciting year as
SABIS continues to expand and improve their
programs and continues to provide excellent
service to their clients. The Board will also be
looking to strengthen the operation of SABIS
and to improving the way we provide support.
I would like to thank all of you for helping to
make this another successful year.

SABIS has been well supported this year
through the provincial government, grant
organizations, corporate support and individual
donations. SABIS had a very successful 30th
Anniversary Brunch with Dr. Maté as the
keynote speaker and at the time of writing also
a very successful Astrid?s Walk ?n?Roll in early
June. SABIS also received many donations
that allowed our new logo to be developed,
new website and computer upgrades. SABIS
has received a CIP grant and is actively
pursuing other grants to enable expansion of
their support programs.

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
Since our last Annual General Meeting it
has been a very busy year for SABIS. The
goals of Service Coordination; to assist
adults with acquired brain injury and their
families to obtain the services and supports
they require, to identify the supports and
services in the community that are currently
available to adults with acquired brain injury
and their families; and to facilitate and
support initiatives that further develop the
community's resources continue to be the
foundation of the services SABIS offer.
SABIS remain to promote lifelong support
and strive towards ensuring that survivors
and their families do not have to walk the
road less travelled alone.
In its on-going effort to improve our service
delivery program. We have refined our
Intake Process during the last year to be
more active to both new and returning
clients. We have established a faster
procedure where potential clients are now
being passed on to our Case Managers
within 2-3 weeks of an initial contact. We
believe this ensures a more efficient and
effective way of being able to meet and
discuss with survivors what their specific
needs and goals are and then work with
them to achieve these.
SABIS continues to be a regular member of
the monthly Calgary Interagency Meetings
and the Distress Centre's Lunch Bag
Workshops. As well as the Brain Injury
Interagency that meet quarterly to share
developments and resources throughout the
network of local brain injury services. We are
also pleased to remain actively involved with
the Action Committee on Disabilities and
Abuse (ACDA) and Calgary Police Services
Diversity Committee. In the coming months
the CPS Diversity Team will be promoting their
Vulnerable Persons Database. This will be a
voluntary self-registry allowing citizens of
Calgary to register vital information pertaining
to vulnerable family members or other
persons in their care. The program is to
provide police critical information about a
registered person and promote communication
if in an emergency situation.
At SABIS we recognize the important part that
caregivers play in a survivor?s daily life. Brain
injury doesn't just affect individuals; it can
transform the lives of entire families. SABIS
do offer a six week support group for
caregivers twice a year (Spring and Fall) Companions on the Road Less Travelled. This
facilitated support group allows participants to
share their experiences, talk about the
challenges specific to coping with a survivor of
brain injury and develop healthy self care
skills.
Due to the popularity as well as the amount of
survivors wishing to participate. Over the past
year we have begun two new weekly Peer
Support Groups. We now have 2 groups on
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. We also
felt it was time to give some SABIS survivors
the opportunity to build on their personal

growth and pursue their own goals. For this they
are now volunteering at all SABIS Peer Support
Groups as well as the SABIS special events. One
of our new Peer Support Groups is facilitated by
two long-standing SABIS survivors.
To help individuals overcome the many losses
attributed to brain injury. It may require the
support of others. Building and maintaining
strong community connections is a vital part of
our work. This is why community presentations
are an important part of what SABIS does to
ensure that other agencies are aware of the
community services we provide. This year one of
our projects is to get out and about to as many
Calgary agencies and outlying areas as possible
and renew our connection. We have already
presented at; the John Howard Society, The Drop
in Centre, CUPS, Mustard Seed, Dream Centre,
and the Distress Centre. We have visits to The
Alex and the Remand Centre booked for the
upcoming months. In addition to this SABIS has
explored and connected too many relevant
community agencies in Strathmore, High River,
Okotoks, Airdrie, Cochrane, Canmore and Banff.
Finally, please join me in officially greeting Kasey
Pearson, Intake Coordinator, back from a year's
maternity leave. Plus, welcoming Cassie Jenkins
and Tessa Veikle, Case Managers in joining the
SABIS Team.
