Example of the NOMURA GROUP’
s Comprehensive Strengths
UMEDA
TSUTAYA BOOKS
Located on the 9th floor of the LUCUA 1100
commercial building, UMEDA TSUTAYA BOOKS was
the first branch to be opened in western Japan.
Rows of books blend seamlessly with various
subtenants on the sales floor measuring around 4000m2.
A refined, cross-cultural theme can be seen across the
entire sales floor, creating a book and café area that
inspires a sophisticated lifestyle.
For its latest redesign, the NOMURA GROUP
contributed to the entire space creation process,
including the working drawings, manufacturing and
installation of bookshelves and fixtures from overseas,
environmental and interior construction and display
decoration.
Project Management
Takashi Isomura
(NOMURA Co., Ltd.)
Opened in the Osaka terminal, the birthplace of
our client’
s business, this large flagship store was
TSUTAYA’
s first store in western Japan. We fully
utilized our comprehensive strengths for the exterior
design of the store and joint construction of crossdivisional products. Everybody involved got to know
our client’
s business in depth and then worked with
the people in charge to create the ideal space and
functions. As a result, our client was satisfied with
our work.
Display Coordination
Akane Tango
We created two artistic window displays based on
the themes of a message from UMEDA TSUTAYA
BOOKS and leaving an impression on viewers. This
project included everything from sales to design and
production in a short space of time between the
proposal and completion, but our windows were met
with approval by both our client and the customers
who visited the store.
Creative Engineering Direction
Sakae Kirioka
(NOMURA Co., Ltd.)
UMEDA TSUTAYA BOOKS is the first bookstore
in western Japan to inspire a particular lifestyle.
To understand what our client was looking for, we
approached each of the people in charge for their
opinions and tried various options to make the end
result better and better. The construction conditions
were tight, but we managed to deliver highquality results, creating an environment that was
satisfactory to both our client and their customers.
Masafumi Teramoto
UMEDA TSUTAYA BOOKS is a large store inspiring
a particular lifestyle, and was designed to be a
noteworthy spot in Umeda, Osaka. We strove to
live up to NOMURA’
s reputation for construction,
with the whole of the NOMURA GROUP working
together to complete the project in the tight time
frame and construction conditions, while also paying
close attention to safety and quality.
Manufacturing and Construction (Sign Construction)
Overseas Production (Bookshelves and Fixtures)
The project of creating and constructing signs was
entrusted to us just one month before the store was to
open, and we were told that the sign items were still being
designed. We immediately held a meeting, then visited
the store to find that the products had already arrived and
the staff were busy preparing for the opening of the store.
We also had to incorporate strong opinions from our client
and the designers into one design. We had a lot to do and
only a short space of time to bring it all together, but our
project was a success.
To produce fixtures for the 4000m2 store, we made
use of our manufacturing experience in the area
where the fixtures were made, streamlining our
processes to ensure a quick turnaround at low costs
and thoroughly checking the finished product. I aim
to gain know-how about fixtures from our client and
expand the potential of our overseas-made shelves
to meet higher expectations.

Several tenants have stores inside UMEDA
TSUTAYA BOOKS. NOMURA worked as the floor
director, supervising the work of the tenants and
the construction companies contracted by our client
to ensure that the overall opening process ran
smoothly. This space was created with the help of
various clients and parties specializing in design
and construction. I am deeply grateful to them and
profoundly moved by the experience.

We performed strict quality control to meet the high
standards of our client while also maximizing the
efficiency of our transportation schedule, the prior
work in our warehouses and the installation process
on site to finish the fixtures by our tight deadline. It
was a thrilling challenge to lead our production team
to clear these tough hurdles in the design process.
It was a very valuable experience indeed.

Example of the NOMURA GROUP’
s Comprehensive Strengths
Himeji Castle
World Heritage Site and Japanese
National Treasure
Himeji Castle was recently repaired in a restoration
project that began in autumn 2009 and took around
51/2 years.
The NOMURA GROUP planned, designed, constructed
and operated a public exhibit of the castle inside
the protective scaffolding. We then designed and
constructed exhibits and signs in the main tower and
other areas of the castle.
Our exhibits include AR (augmented reality) technology
that shows visitors features of Himeji Castle’
s
construction and how the castle used to look when
it was first built. We also took measures to reduce
fire risks in the castle, such as using lights that do not
require electrical cords.
We have also been hired to perform operation and
management work since the grand opening of the
castle.
Tenku no Shirasagi, the facility for observing the restoration of the main tower
Project Management
Hirokazu Morimoto
As Himeji Castle is a World Heritage Site and
Japanese National Treasure, every step of the process
was a large-scale job where we had to consider
our responsibilities to society and the ramifications
of our decisions. My role was to create the right
“environment”
, managing conditions such as the
budget to ensure that the project proceeded smoothly.
As someone in charge of attracting visitors, I have the
ongoing job of making sure that visitors who come to
see Himeji Castle will return in the future.

Design for Asia Awards 2015 ― Grand Award
Koji Kami
You could say that my job is to write love letters
on behalf of Himeji Castle. I get close to the
“recipients”(customers), learn about them, come
to understand them and plan forms of expression
that will appeal them. Himeji Castle has incredible
cultural significance, and it was both a challenge and
a joy to plan exhibits that would be worthy of such
an important place. I think the biggest part of my
mission was working with the others to make sure our
proposals were accepted.

Design for Asia Awards 2015 ― Gold Award
Ryuichi Okuda
After our team worked together for five and a half
years, Himeji Castle finally reopened in spring 2015.
Every step of this job was new to me – I’
d never
restored a World Heritage Site and Japanese National
Treasure before! But all of us, including our affiliated
companies, were proud to work on such a significant
project, and the end result of the restoration was
splendid.

I was involved in running Tenku no Shirasagi, the
facility for observing the restoration of Himeji Castle’
s
main tower. After Tenku no Shirasagi was closed,
I created signs, graphics and AR content. Because
many of Himeji Castle’
s visitors are from other
countries, I designed signs in multiple languages,
taking great care to convey the meaning of the
content accurately. I had to learn many things as I
went along, but in the end I created content unlike
any other, that would convey the importance of this
world-famous heritage site to millions of visitors.
Operation Management
Kazuhiko Yamada
Interior Sign Design
I was in charge of designing the exterior signs. I
walked around the castle again and again, looking at
the great many signs that have been put up around
the castle over the years, then began designing signs
that would guide visitors smoothly through the vast
castle grounds. I also endeavored to create designs
with a quality worthy of a World Heritage Site and
Japanese National Treasure.
DSA Design Award 2015 ― Merit
I had the honor of being involved in the Himeji Castle
project after working on Tenku no Shirasagi (the
facility for observing the restoration process), which
opened in 2011. I directed the design of various
features, including the presentation of the various
spaces, the workings of the AR content and items
such as the signs, light fittings, pamphlets and tickets.
I tried various options until I came up with designs
that would best show what makes this World Heritage
Site great.

Creative Direction
This project began with the aim of making Himeji
Castle look like it did when it was first built. I strove
to make signs that blended harmoniously with the
atmosphere and construction of the castle while still
being sufficiently noticeable for visitors. I designed the
signs with the hope of sharing the many great things
about Himeji Castle with as many visitors as possible.
Kazuyoshi Asaga
Over 70 NOMURA staff are currently involved in the running of Himeji Castle. My
main mission is to improve the satisfaction and ensure the safety of the people
who visit Himeji Castle. I was also asked to be involved in security and disaster
prevention measures, which was an even bigger responsibility, but I took it to
mean that they thought highly of my work in the past. My staff and I aim to do
whatever it takes to show the world the many things that make Himeji Castle
great.

The Osaka International Peace Center was renovated for the first time in 25
years, with the purpose of teaching modern and contemporary history to the
children and young people who will one day run the world, and preparing new
generations to be part of a global society. This project centered on the concepts
of past, present and future, with the aim of encouraging visitors to reflect on past
history and open up doors for a better future. The emotionally impactful exhibits
are designed so that even young children will intuitively understand the message
and think inquiringly about the issue of peace.

Overseas Awards in 2015
2015 was an incredibly exciting year that brought NOMURA a string of
opportunities to enter competitions and to win awards.
We aim to keep up the momentum and sustain these high standards in 2016 by
presenting a wide variety of outstanding designs to the world.
Toranomon HOP
A German-style beer pub that has been a cherished fixture in Yokohama for 26
years, Toranomon HOP opened a new branch overlooking the open-air plaza at
the foot of the Toranomon Hills. The pub is modern enough to be congruous with
the new buildings in this large-scale development area, while also maintaining
the traditional ambience of an old-fashioned roadside store. This project sought
to create an intimate atmosphere like Su -nest-, where office workers will want to
make it a daily ritual to stop by.

Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle, Japan’
s first World Heritage Site, has reopened following five and a
half years of restoration work. The project was undertaken in two stages. The first
stage consisted of a restoration exhibition unlike almost any other in the world.
The castle was covered by a temporary tent, on which a picture of the castle was
painted. An observation space was set up inside the tent, where visitors could
come and watch the ongoing construction work at any time. The second stage
began after the restoration was completed in 2015. The latest AR (augmented
reality) technology was incorporated into the castle’
s commentary, bringing history
to life through 3D computer graphics and videos of the time when Himeji Castle
was built.
Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum
Japan’
s only carpentry tool museum, designed with a theme of linking people with
nature and traditions with innovation. Carpentry tools suffer a grim fate: they are
used until they wear out, and this is all the more true of high-quality tools. This
museum seeks to keep carpentry tools alive for future generations and teach
people about the spirit of building. Tools are collected, preserved, studied and
exhibited, creating a place where people can coexist with, understand, respect
and learn about nature and providing a place where the skills and wisdom of
craftspeople meet.

YASKAWA Innovation Center
W Guangzhou FEI
To celebrate the centennial anniversary of YASKAWA Electric, the area around
its head office and factory is being remodeled as a robot village. The YASKAWA
Innovation Center has been opened as part of this initiative to show members
of the public what YASKAWA Electric is working on in an easy-to-understand
way. Even the building itself is designed to evoke the image of a robot, with
a distinctive three-dimensional shape. Inside, the latest control technology is
arranged in an emotionally engaging way, telling the world about manufacturing
through a series of surprising discoveries.
The first W Hotel in mainland China, this gigantic lounge bar stands out with a
three-dimensional façade consisting of three 18m-long glass surfaces. With the
Chinese city of Guangzhou evolving and developing every day, this project aimed
to create a space that not only made an impact but provided a value that was
both completely new and long-lasting. Guests step out of their day-to-day lives
and into a cube of light, where they will enjoy a unique, special experience like
nothing they’
ve ever seen before.

In the“Robotic Signage”project, the signage was attached to the arms of eight sevenaxis industrial robots whose arms move as flexibly and dexterously as human arms. With the
first presentation technology of its kind in the whole world, the operations of the robots are
coordinated to create dynamic movements, with a variety of perfectly linked video content
creating a moment you’

Another piece of presentation technology that has never seen before is the“Mechatronics

, consisting of 150 cubes arranged in a 128-cube formation on a wall of 4.5m high and
4m wide. Coordinated with projection mapping, the cubes move back and forth and rotate at a
rapid speed and a high degree of precision, creating an artistic space full of visual surprises.

2011, the NOMURA GROUP has carried out volunteer work called the

three annual Hikari no Hako (Light Box) workshops with the Tohoku region,
whose residents we have come to know through our volunteer work. The
workshops were extended to some of the local companies and schools near
our Tokyo headquarters. The participants created light boxes, each with
