OVERVIEW
Project Name:
Company Name:
Application:
Crossrail (C510 Section Construction)
BBMV
Environmental Monitoring System
The purpose of the overall system was to provide environmental
monitoring during the construction phase of the C510 Crossrail project.
There are two sites (Finsbury & Whitechapel).
33 Environmental Monitoring Stations were installed in total with 2
SCADA systems, one at each site, to be able to review underground
environmental monitoring at above ground stations.
The gases specified were:
• Oxygen
• Methane
• Nitric Oxide
• Carbon Monoxide
• Nitrogen Dioxide
A Global Alarm Pushbutton is fitted on each Environmental Monitoring
Station. This allows a worker to trigger the alarm if they are in any
danger, which will send nearby Sensorstations, and the connected
SCADA system into alarm. Alarm setpoints are in line with BS6164:2011
There is also a Traffic Light facility included. If any gas station in
the system goes into an alarm condition then the station closest
to the pit bottom changes the Traffic Lights to warn of potential
dangers in the tunnel before human entry.
All commissioning of the sensorstations, an ongoing maintenance
contract and full training on the system was also supplied.
CASE STUDY – ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING SYSTEM FOR BBMV/CROSSRAIL
TX9165 - Environmental Monitoring Station
The Environmental Monitoring Stations consist of the Sentro 8 Sensorstation, a
battery back up (P9000.223.01) and A/V alarm all with communications to the
surface SCADA system. Each system has a global alarm button as well which can
communicate to the other stations as well as the SCADA/HMI systems (TX9503).
The system is housed in a stainless steel mounting hood (P9000.164) (580 x 400 x
150mm).
The Sentro 8 is ready to be configured to meet any combination of gas detection
and environmental condition monitoring requirements. In this Crossrail 510 section
they were configured to sense for 5 different gases at set ranges.
The fully integrated Sentro 8 Sensorstation with intelligent, interchangeable sensing
modules can simultaneously monitor the concentration of up to eight different
gases or be combined with a choice of remote connected sensors measuring
temperature, level, pressure, vibration, speed, proximity and air velocity in any
combination. It also offers a number of through life savings and benefits and will
easily incorporate any future system upgrade into its existing architecture.

Notes:
The screens below are from the SCADA system showing examples of the type of data
monitoring available. Each of the squares represents a monitoring station and shows
approximately where within the site that they are. The green squares are stations that are
fitted and running and green indicates that all is well at that location. If gas was present at a
particular location in a concentration that breached either setpoint 1 or setpoint 2, the green
square would turn to yellow or red respectively.
The stations that are “greyed” out are inactive stations which indicate they are not installed yet.

OVERVIEW
Application: VSD & Fan Monitoring System
Trolex manufactured and supplied a VSD & Fan Monitoring system for
Heathrow Airport Terminal 5. The project required monitoring of eight
ventilation fans for the following parameters:
• Motor Winding Temperature (x3)
• Motor Bearing Temperature (x2)
• Motor Bearing Vibration (x2)

OVERVIEW
Project Name:
Lower Lea Valley Cable Tunnels
Company Name: J. Murphy & Sons/National Grid
Application:
Gas Detection and Air Velocity Monitoring System
The purpose of the overall project was to re-locate overhead line
circuits, which crossed the Olympic site in the Lower Lea Valley
area as part of the Power Lines Underground (PLUG) project.
The project involved the design and construction of 2 cable
tunnels running parallel between Hackney and West Ham over a
route length of approximately 6km. One tunnel is 4.15m nominal
diameter and connects into National Grid Company (NGC)
substations; the other is 2.82m nominal diameter and connects
into EDF Energy (EDFE) substations.
For the National Grid Tunnel, Trolex provided a gas detection
system to monitor the main shaft, shaft staircases and plantrooms. Junctions of the shaft and tunnel were also monitored
and additional carbon monoxide sensors were fixed at the
plantroom inlet/outlet grills. Methane sensors were fixed at top
of shafts.
The alarms where the sensors are sited are classed as Zone 1 so required ATEX Grp II equipment.
These fed back up to the control panels via intrinsically safe barriers to the non certified cubicles containing gas racks.
The following gases needed to be monitored: •Methane •Carbon Monoxide •Hydrogen Sulphide •Oxygen
The monitoring and control panels were located in the control office of each shaft head building. The trip amplifiers
located in the control panels monitored the various gas levels. Control relays were tripped at alarm set points to initiate
alarms.

CASE STUDY – GAS DETECTION SYSTEM AT LOWER LEA VALLEY CABLE TUNNELS FOR MURPHY GROUP/NATIONAL GRID
J. Murphy & Sons (JMS) has been procuring Trolex equipment for over 15 years and have been known to us through
a number of TBM OEMs for the environmental monitoring systems they provide in and around the TBMs. JMS have
developed a working relationship with Trolex and when fixed gas monitoring at regular intervals became a British
Standard good practice in this country, Trolex were able to offer JMS an affordable system that we could install &
maintain. The Trolex environmental monitoring systems can be readily installed by our own fully trained operatives and
only require a Trolex service engineer to attend for commissioning and regular maintenance.
Trolex have delivered sensors that seem to be more tolerant in the humid conditions naturally encountered within the
existing ventilated tunnel network which has helped prior concerns with fixed monitoring systems where we had issues
affecting the durability of the various sensors/cells remaining in calibration and failing within months rather than years in
operational service.
Trolex have always been an approachable company that are always willing to assist in mutually resolving problems &
issues that can manifest themselves on challenging projects.

Universal Sensing:
The heart of the Sentro 1 is the Sentro eModule - an intelligent
standardised gas sensing module that detects a range of toxic and
flammable gases. Dynamic data is stored within the eModule, together
with the condition of the gas sensing element and its service history.
The modules are already calibrated so they can be substituted at any
time with a replacement module. Each eModule retains its calibration
data and is automatically recognised by Sentro when the eModule is
inserted. This significantly simplifies calibration and maintenance and
the module can be changed, even with the power applied.
Sentro eModule
Pre-calibrated plug-in
sensing modules
can be changed for
rapid calibration and
serviced - even with
the power applied.
Security
There is no danger of inserting the wrong module. Up to 20 insert codes can be configured and Sentro 1 automatically identifies the
module that is inserted.
Security coding is used when it is necessary to ensure that the same type of Sentro eModule is always used.
TWA and STEL
Selected toxic gas sensing modules are equipped with automatic Time Weighted Average (TWA) and Short Term Exposure Limit
(STEL) calculation, in accordance with international EH40 recommendations.

Features:
•
•
•
Commander is a powerful data input/output management system, equally suitable for localised monitoring systems, or high
density distributed SCADA networks
Bus expandable modular architecture enables general plant personnel to create local monitoring and control systems or complex
tunnel or mine-wide data networks
Individual input/output modules can be distributed at any point on a Commandbus data network and configured to specific
applications integrating analogue inputs, pulse inputs, switch inputs and output control drivers
TX2100: DATA SHEET
DATA SHEET - TX2100
Application Benefits:
Exploit the unique benefits of Commander and look at a Control and Monitoring System in a completely different way:
System Simplification
All field I/O data is transmitted from the Commander Terminal modules to the Command Module by a single Commandbus data
cable, so eliminating practically all the panel wiring as well as dramatically reducing manufacturing costs. Reliability is improved and
fault diagnostics is considerably simplified.
Ease of System Design
Commander system design does not need to be committed at an early stage in the project. Once the Commander backbone is in
place, the format can be adapted or changed to suit the design prerogatives of the plant as it develops.
System Flexibility
As never before, system evolution is in the hands of the Plant Engineer. System configuration may be modified as required; and I/O
can be dispersed at any point on the Commandbus. Sensor and control device functions are individually programmable so control/
alarm functions can be decided as appropriate during final commissioning. The same versatility can be exploited for later plant
upgrades and changes.
TX2100: DATA SHEET
DATA SHEET -
Installation Cost Saving
Terminal modules can be located at the optimum position
to marshall incoming plant cables. Data from the Terminal
Modules is then transferred via a single Commandbus
cable to the control area or display device - no plant
cables need enter the control and monitoring centre.
ocally dispersed groups of sensors or field devices can
L
also be added to the same Commandbus, so saving
the cost and complexity of multiple plant cables. All
data can be transmitted up to a total distance of 1km.
This distance can be easily increased by the use of
Commander Repeater modules.

CALIBRATION
Calibration intervals:
Due to the gas sensors using sensing elements which have known zero and span movement relating to time and
environment we recommend the sensors are calibrated on a six monthly basis.
Bump testing:
It is advisable the gas sensors are also bump tested at set intervals between calibration periods to check they are still
functioning correctly. The recommended time period for this test is set on an individual site basis and falls under the
remit of the health and safety representative for the site. A general guidance of time period for this test is monthly but
this should be reviewed by the responsible site personnel.
Important: The equipment supplied performs a safety role and calibration is an essential part of maintaining the safety
integrity of the products.

NOTES:
• The calibration gas shown is our recommended ideal calibration
level however any concentration gas down to 50% of full scale can
be utilised for accurate calibration
• The CH4 test gas must be supplied in balance air if being used to
calibrate pellistor based devices
• The quantity of gas used per calibration has been calculated using
following: 4 min gassing time period utilising a fixed 0.5l/min
regulator
• 25% O2 cannot be shipped via air so a concentration below 23%
would have to be used if air shipping of gas was required
