Founded in Atlanta in 1867, Morehouse College remains the only all-male historically black college in the nation. The Glee Club is known for its musical precision, wide-ranging repertoire and distinguished alumni such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. VocalEssence and the Glee Club will share the stage with guest conductor David Morrow, singing everything from classical favorites to the Morehouse College Glee Club anthem, “Betelehemu.” SAT, MAR 19, 2016 - 8 PM SUN, MAR 20, 2016 - 4 PM FOUR SAINTS IN THREE ACTS GOODALE THEATER, THE COWLES CENTER 528 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis CREATIVE AND CAMPY Gertrude Stein FEATURING: VocalEssence Ensemble Singers Philip Brunelle, conductor Concert Conversations at 7 pm on Saturday and 3 pm on Sunday with conductor Philip Brunelle Called “ebullient, grand and unusual” and “a high camp masterpiece” by critics, Four Saints in Three Acts changed the course of American opera when it premiered in 1934. Set in 16th-century Spain, the playfully humorous Four Saints traces the lives of saints on Earth through a witty libretto by Gertrude Stein and a stunning score by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Virgil Thomson. VocalEssence reimagines the ground-breaking piece on the stage of the Goodale Theater. From Stein’s famous “Pigeons on the grass, alas” to “the last act, which is a fact,” this wildly inventive work pushes the boundaries of opera and leaves you with a smile on your face.
