Come and enjoy a cool dip in the pool as well as some delicious food from Bo-Bo’s Diner of Vernon Hills, our concessionaire at the aquatic center. Beginning August 15 through Labor Day, the Family Aquatic Center will only be open on weekends from 12-5 pm due to the high school and college age lifeguards and deck staff returning to the classroom in mid-August. Our final Movie in the Park this summer will be on August 26 at dusk at the north end of Deerpath Park, next to the Warrington playground. The featured film is ”Zootopia”. Celebrate the end of summer at our 6th Annual Little Bear Ribfest in Century Park! On August 19 & 20, the park will be filled with blues music entertainers, rib vendors and beverages! Refer to page 7 for more information and be sure to visit the Ribfest website at www.littlebearribfest.com. Families can play together at our 9th Annual Worldwide Day of Play event on September 17th. This event features fun, outdoor recreational games for every age. No registration is necessary, just come out and play in Century Park North! Mark your calendars now for all the October special events. Trucks, Trunks, and Treats, a Halloween themed event for children, will take place on October 8th and our popular Fall Fest is October 28th. When all of your Halloween activities are over, head over to the Century Park sled hill on November 5th for the Annual Pumpkin Launch. Bring your pumpkins and “launch” them down the sled hill for a “smashing” good time! The Kids’ Castle playground in Deerpath Park, constructed by our community in 1997, has been replaced with a modern day castle and is open for play! Vernon Hills’ resident, Amy Lamberti, was the District’s community volunteer leader for this playground project. Amy organized the volunteer effort of residents who offered their time to demolish the old playground and build fences and benches along with planting flowers for the new Kids’ Castle play area. The Sullivan Community Center construction is underway and on schedule for a Spring, 2017 completion. The project includes a new state-of-the-art preschool wing, an additional full-size gymnasium, a new customer service entrance, and offices for the Administrative staff. See page 4 for more details about the renovation. Step outdoors and enjoy the best your parks and Park District have to offer! David Doerhoefer Board Meetings: The District is governed by five elected Commissioners who set policy for the operation of the Park District. Park Board meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Larry Laschen Community Center, Century Room, 294 Evergreen Drive, unless otherwise posted. Please call to confirm the dates or times or visit us online at www.vhparkdistrict.org. Meetings are open to the public and residents are invited to share comments or suggestions during the appropriate time as listed on the agenda. Vision Statement: Addressing the lifelong leisure needs of all Vernon Hills residents. Mission Statement: To promote diverse community based recreational opportunities by providing a variety of programs, services, facilities and natural spaces to enhance the quality of life for our residents. SRACLC provides community based therapeutic recreation programs to people of all ages with disabilities or special needs. SRACLC is a cooperative effort of the Grayslake, Vernon Hills and Mundelein Park Districts and the Villages of Hawthorn Woods, Lake Zurich, Libertyville and Lincolnshire. Individuals residing within the boundaries of the Member Agencies are considered “residents” of SRACLC and may utilize the services. SRACLC offers more than 500 weekly programs, special events, and camps during the year. SRACLC also recognizes that some people with disabilities prefer to participate in recreation programs within their own Park District or Recreation Department. SRACLC can help you with this opportunity by providing an extra staff, if deemed necessary, behavior management support, disability awareness training and other adaptive services necessary for safe and successful participation. Contact the SRACLC office (847) 816-4866 if you would like to receive a brochure or would like more information. The SRACLC Administration building is located in Hartmann Park, 290 Oakwood Drive, Vernon Hills. SRACLC needs your help. Lessons follow the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim guidelines. Taught by instructors who are certified lifeguards, our lessons feature progressive swimming instruction and practice of water safety skills. Selecting the Right Class for Your Child 1. Review the general descriptions. Choose the first class that lists a skill that your child has not yet mastered. 2. Children’s skills will be assessed on the first day of class to ensure that they are placed in the proper level. Adjustments will be made if necessary. Swimming requires motor coordination and practice to become proficient. 3. It is not uncommon to spend more than one session in a particular level. This is especially true with levels 2, 3 and 4. Therefore, do not expect your child to automatically advance to the next level at the end of a session. 4. If you are unsure about your child’s abilities or have questions about the different courses or swim class policies, contact Robert Wood, Aquatic Supervisor at (847) 996-3488. Parent / Tot Swim Lessons Ages: 6 months-4 years You and your child will be exposed to water adjustment activities and experience supported movements in a fun and enjoyable manner. This program is designed to let children have fun in the water through games and activities while developing swimming readiness. Only one child per adult will be allowed. If more than one child is enrolled, a second adult must be present. Parent/Tot and Preschool lessons are listed on page 38. Preschool Lessons Swim Levels 1-5: 4+ Years Our Learn to Swim program consists of 5 levels of progression in swimming techniques and water safety. For the deaf or hearing-impaired, call the Illinois Relay Center voice only operator at 800-526-0857. Food Allergy Policy The Park District will attempt to accommodate each program participant who has a food allergy in order to provide the safest learning environment possible. A Food Allergy Action Plan will be created by the District staff and parents and will identify operational practices for parents, teachers and children to follow. For a copy of the Food Allergy Policy, contact Tom Ritter, Superintendent of Recreation, at (847) 996-6802. Only the program supervisor is authorized to make exceptions to these age ranges. Consideration will only be given once all age-appropriate participants have had an opportunity to register. Resident/Non-Resident (NR) Fees Vernon Hills residents significantly contribute to the operating budget of the Park District by paying property taxes. Everyone who resides within the boundaries of the Park District are eligible to receive resident discounted rates. Once per year, each Vernon Hills household is required to show proof of residency in order to qualify for resident rates. Families living within Hawthorn School District #73 are also eligible to receive resident discounted rates for programs. The only exceptions are facility rentals and daily admission to the Family Aquatic Center. In addition, District 73 residents must wait until the non-resident registration dates to register for programs. Non-resident fees are the second fees shown in program descriptions. These rates are not discounted and are necessary in order to ensure that non-resident participants contribute to the overall financing of the park system on an equitable basis with residents. Senior Citizen Discount Senior discounts are available for individual passes and membership to our Fitness Center for residents aged 62 & older. For all other programs and the Family Aquatic Center, a 20% discount will be applied. Payment Policy - Households with an unpaid balance will not be allowed to register for any Vernon Hills Park District programs, activities, memberships or rentals until the balance is paid in full. For assitance with an unpaid balance contact the Business Services Supervisor at 847-996-6803. NSF Policy A $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned due to non-sufficient funds (NSF). Photo & Video Policy On occasion, the District staff or contractors may take pictures or video footage of participants in our programs, or of people in the District’s parks. These pictures may be used for the Park District’s website, brochures, pamphlets, videos, flyers or for media promotion. Residents are encouraged to submit photos for the Park District to use in its informational materials. Vandalism Each year, vandalism costs the Park District thousands of dollars. Higher costs of maintenance, repair and clean up of park areas can be avoided only with your help. Should you see vandalism occurring, please call the Vernon Hills Police at (847) 362-4449. Discipline A positive approach is used regarding discipline. Staff periodically reviews rules with participants during programs. If inappropriate or unacceptable behavior occurs, prompt resolution will be sought and the Behavior Code of Conduct will be used as a guideline. The Park District reserves the right to remove a participant whose actions endanger the safety of himself. Notary Public Services Notary public services are available at the Lachen Community Center. Please remember that documents must be signed in the presence of the Notary Public.
