Fastener Training Institute “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”. One of FTI’s trainers, Laurence Claus noted this quote from John Harvey in a recent article he wrote about the importance of training. Also noted in his article; “Education should become a life-long commitment. It’s obvious that someone with no experience needs training, but what about those people that have been in the industry for some time? It’s easy to fall into a comfort zone no matter how much experience you have.” This is where FTI comes in. The Fastener Training Institute’s core purpose is to enhance fastener use, safety and reliability. Founded in 2008 by the Los Angeles Fastener Association (now the Pacific-West Fastener Association), FTI was to be the platform for delivering education programs locally, and then to other parts of the west coast. Over the last six years, the course offering has grown tremendously and our reach has grown nationally. In addition to the 30 classes planned for 2015 in 10 cities, FTI offers customized on-site training as well as interactive webinars. Future plans include on-demand web-based courses. Now separate from Pac-West, FTI is an independent resource for the entire fastener industry and focused on filling the training void. The FTI Team: An amazing group of leaders. So what is the Fastener Training Institute? www.fastenertraining. org webinars FTI is a non-profit organization that provides beginning and advanced training on fastener products, standards and specifications. “The objective of the Fastener Training Institute is to elevate the level of technical understanding and expertise of the individuals in the fastener industry by providing a variety of training programs presented by recognized industry experts.” Led by a team of industry professionals, FTI believes its training will help participants compete more effectively, building safety and quality into their businesses and their customers’ businesses. FTI is led by a volunteer Board of Directors who all value the importance of fastener training. The Board consists of Directors John Wachman (Desert Distribution), Andy Cohn (Duncan Bolt), Tim Roberto Jr. (Star Stainless), Dallas Puckett (Valley Nut & Bolt) and Jennifer Harder (Empire Bolt & Screw). “I wanted to work with a group of people who believed as strongly in education as I do, and something needed to be done to make training more accessible to other parts of the country. I remember training using The Exciting World of Fasteners videos. They were dry, boring, and it was hard to stay focused. This industry needs education which is accessible and affordable for every size of Jennifer Harder business.” advanced training tensile strength aerospace understanding print reading structural bolting thread pitch technical expertise Filling the Training VOID! safety head styles quality assurance certified fastener specialist what is a bolted joint? plant tours ASTM ISO Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government. -Thomas Jefferson Why is training necessary? Your business may not be a government entity, but what Thomas Jefferson wrote in a letter 225 years ago still applies today. Education pays back both your business and the employee when they are able to effectively and accurately help their customers. In the past it was common for fastener manufacturers to send factory-trained representatives and product managers into the field to work with and train their distributors via joint sales calls on OEMs. This has changed with the majority of standard fastener manufacturing moving offshore; this critical resource has mostly disappeared. This has left the responsibility for reliable fastener product information to distributors and the consuming OEMs. “There is no better investment managers can make in their businesses than providing good training to their staff” says Joe Greenslade, Director of Engineering Technology at Industrial Fastener Institute. “When something goes wrong in an application, it is highly unlikely that a fastener defect is to blame. Typically the problem is that the part was specified incorrectly, installed incorrectly or ordered incorrectly.” What type of fastener training does FTI provide? 2015 Class Topics Product Training- Part #1- 1 day Product Training- Part #2- 1 day Product Training- Part #3- 1 day Understanding Hydrogen Embrittlement- 2 days Quality Management Systems- 1 day Fastener Training Week- * 5 day CFS class Fastener Basics- 1 day Fastener Manufacturing Plant Tour- 1 day Automotive Fastener Technology- * 2 days Fastener Secondary Processes Plant Tour- 1 day Structural Bolting- 1 day Fastener Technology Workshop- 1 day Fastener Specifications and Terminology- 1 day Aerospace Fasteners: An overview- 3 day Understanding the Bolted Joint- 1 day Dimensional & Material Specifications- 1 day Fastener Quality Assurance- 1 day Fastener Testing Seminar- 1 day Metric Fasteners- 1 day The 2015 class schedule is still being finalized, but can be found on the FTI website along with class descriptions. *Events co-produced with the Industrial Fasteners Institute. CFS = Certified Fastener Specialist. Become a Certified Fastener Specialist! To receive the CFS™ designation, students must complete seven full-day training courses offered throughout the year (or the 5-day accelerated version) and pass a final exam at the end of the training. Upon completion of the program, students receive an engraved plaque designating their certification as a fastener specialist, according to the requirements established by the Fastener Training Institute. This advanced technical training program was created in 1998 and now has over 400 graduates. www.fastenertraining. org all levels are welcome • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • heat treating There are classes available for every level of fastener professional. The classes offer a healthy dynamic between manufacturers, distributors and end users to collaborate, communicate and bring knowledge, ideas and innovation together. Many of the courses are offered multiple times a year, and in different cities around the US. All are public seminars, but many are also offered as private, customized courses that can be tailored to your company’s needs. On-site training is a great way to get multiple employees involved, while saving on costs, since the instructors come to you. FTI John Wachman Director John Wachman says, “Anyone taking an FTI course will learn something, no matter what his or her level of expertise. Our industry is fragmented; pockets of specific knowledge are everywhere. FTI allows us to bring all these fragments together and pool the knowledge.” Laurence Claus and class during “Fastener Training Week”. fine thread classes in 10 cities across the US course thread knowledgeable instructors specifications are important dimensional training fastener training real world trainers sign up Trusted and Respected. I have yet to leave one of these sessions without having learned something new from the other instructors and class participants.” -Laurence Claus Carmen Vertullo, Salim Brahimi CFS Trainers Carmen Vertullo - CarVer Consulting Salim Brahimi - IBECA Technologies Joe Greenslade - Industrial Fasteners Institute Bengt Blendulf - EduPro US, Inc. As the new generations find their way into the fastener industry the goal is to offer more web-based and interactive type training, and also expand the range of topics. “We hope to work with and gain support from all of the fastener associations, and work to create more regional training opportunities. The biggest problem FTI has is budgeting. It takes money to develop new programs,” says John Wachman. “If you have the means to donate, why not put your money in a place that will serve the needs of your business? The IFI (Industrial Fasteners Institute) has been a big supporter of FTI. Rob Harris, Executive Director of IFI, has just announced they are increasing their “CFS week” grants for 2015 to support 14 of their member students. We are encouraging other associations to adopt this educational grant model as a member benefit”. Fastener Education Foundation The Fastener Education Foundation (FEF) was created by Pac-West in 2014 as a tax-deductible way for companies and individuals to help develop and fund fastener-related education. The purpose of FEF is to enhance public safety through fastener education. FEF Mission Statement • To enhance public health and safety by insuring sustainability of the manufacturing industry in North America by assisting the fastener industry in attracting, training, and educating talent. • The FEF is dedicated to seeking out, informing, and funding individuals and companies that will continue to make the NA fastener industry thrive. FEF has its own Board of Directors, who as industry professionals are highly capable and committed to creating an organization that will support fastener education throughout the country. Andy Cohn of Duncan Bolt, Jennifer Friel of Midwest Fabricating, Simmi Sakhuja of Stelfast, Kelly Cole of SBS and Phil Johnson of ITW are leading the cause today. Get Involved! FTI and FEF need support from the industry to continue the path for fastener education.
