!"#$%& S T. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE ALUMNI A S S O C I AT I O N November 2007 Room 204, 2/F, Leung Kau Kui Student Centre, St. Stephen’s College, Stanley, Hong Kong. G.P.O. Box 125, Hong Kong. Tel/Fax : 2813 1071 E-mail : [email protected] Homepage : http://www.sscaa.org Submitted by Mr. Boris Tang (1994) More than 20 alumni from 1994 (Form 5) got together to join the Homecoming Event, taking over a large section of the Martin Hostel! Like kids all over again, we played basketball, badminton and volleyball under the hot sun, enjoying the heat and sweat. We walked around the campus, finding the gate of the Main Building unlocked, we went in exploring, taking photos and reminiscing the good old days. Next we head to Stanley to have our favorite drink - at ! - yummy...yummy...same taste as 13 years ago! One of the highlights was getting to see our teacher Miss Maggie Chau. We had dinner together at the Dining Hall and a great time chatting. Miss Chau was so kind to have prepared home-made dessert (tong shui) for us! Late at night, we went to Stanley to have beer - cheers! Then we stayed up all night playing cards, board game, talking about old days and drinking beers (oops, I meant Coke). It was a wonderful experience for us, and we sure look forward to the 2008 Homecoming. Swimming Competition 2007 Submitted by Mr. Dennis Lai (1983) Dear Alumni, I am Dennis Lai, class of 1983. It was a pleasure to be able to participate in the SSC Swimming Competition on Sept. 21, as part of the Alumni Swimming Team with Ms. Jenny Fung, Mr. Howson Tsang, Mr. Nicolas Chan and Mr. Bernard Yu. I was the final leg in the 4x50m relay event. We competed against 5 other teams made up of teachers and students. All of us were in the school swimming team back in the 70's, but now with a belly of 40" (except Jenny of course), we all had the same thought, "let's participate, do our best, and not worry about medal". Well, we were certainly successful - we participated, we did our best, and we did not win any medal. That day turned out to be a great moment in the history of St Stephen's, as we learnt the College has received confirmation from EDB approving its DSS application. Just as memorable was the great support from our very own Cheering Team led by Mr. Samson Lee (Ah-Choy), together with, Mr. Edson Chow, "Little Vampire", Mr. Chan Yik Wai, Mr. David Pao, Mr David Yu, and my mother-in-law and my dear 3-year-old son Boris. I could hear my son yelling at the top of his voice encouraging me as I tried my best to overtake other swimmers. Nothing could cheer me better than the warm hug from my son after the race. All of us enjoyed the dip in the pool that day and a sincere thanks to the College, the Alumni Association and the Cheering Team for giving us the opportunity to share the fun with the students. 40th Anniversary Reunion in 2008 for the Class of '68 2008 is a special year for those who graduated in 1968. In order to celebrate this memorable year to its fullest extent, we are going to organize a series of activities to draw local and overseas alumni and their families to participate in this meaningful reunion. For details, please contact Charlie Chau at : 9481 2541 or [email protected] Remember These Faces? Mr. Andrew Lai (1982, F7) lives in Vancouver with wife Monica and son Wesley. Andrew competes regularly in the Vancouver Triathlon - 1,500m swimming, 40km biking and 10k running. He is now training for the Victoria Half Ironman in 2008, which is a more challenging event with 1,900m swimming, 80km biking and 21k half marathon. P. K. Wong (Arts teacher), Rosa Cheung, Edgar Leung, Keith Tong (English teacher), Eli Shek Ho Yin, H. Y. Ng (Chemistry teacher) Mr. Keith Tong taught English at St. Stephen's in the late 1970's. He is now with the Language Center at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology. Tong-sir visited Vancouver earlier in July and met with fellow teachers and alumni. Andrew competing in Vancouver Triathlon. Andrew, Monica and Wesley at Toronto's Wonderland. 2 The 2007 Homecoming took on a special meaning as one of our alumnae - Miss Julia Chan (1996) - accepted a marriage proposal from Mr. Wallace Lai at the Homecoming event. We asked Wallace to share his experience with us. Lewis, a competent spy Max, and an innocent trespasser Mr. K. Two weeks before the camp, I approached Max (no doubt that I got the right guy!), telling him my intention and he made a call to Lewis to have the Chapel unlocked between 1-2pm. Max informed Julia to gather at 1pm to create a time window for me, while informing the rest of the group to gather at 2pm, without letting them in on the secret. Then came the unexpected. Our innocent Mr. K called Julia one day before the camp asking the arrangement and of course Julia said 1pm. Mr. K was very punctual and we checked in at the same time. While I was fidgeting what to do next, I caught a few seconds in private to explain my plan to Mr. K. Not a moment too soon, Julia came to us and suggested to take a walk, and dear Mr. K really did a good convincing job by lying down in his bed, saying in a weak voice, "sorry, I am not feeling well and need some rest". After all the worries and trouble, Julia and I finally went for a walk around the campus. We stopped in front of the Chapel and to her "surprise" but (of course) within my expectation, the Chapel door opened to us. We walked in with glee and the big moment came......... Well, the story must end here as what happened next is a secret to be shared by God, Julia and myself. Haha! Anyway I am so grateful to the three gentlemen who contributed to our life-long memory. AA: Would you please start by telling us a bit about yourself, and Julia? WL: I studied at the Newman College, and received both my Bachelor degree and PhD. from PolyU. I am now a postdoctoral research fellow with PolyU's Civil Engineering Department. Julia studied Environmental Science at HKU, specializing in ecological studies. She is now an Environmental Scientist working at a civil consultancy firm. Julia enjoys her work very much as she can appreciate the nature during her field studies in the countryside. AA: Please tell us, how you came to know Julia, how long have you known her, and what are the good qualities she has? WL: We met each other at the Science Museum in 1998; and fell in love in 1999. We were both volunteer tour guides and we became friends. We talked frequently on the internet and phone and then we started dating. All of Julia's friends will undoubtedly agree that her character is "near perfect", which I heartily agree although you may say I am biased. AA: Did you and Julia visit the campus often? What prompted you to choose the Chapel as the special place to propose to Julia? WL: My first visit to the College was during the 2006 Homecoming. Julia showed me around the marvelous campus. When we stopped by the Chapel, it occurred to me - This is the place I've been looking for! It is the most suitable place to ask her hand for marriage because the lovely campus is where Julia was brought up; and the peaceful Chapel represents the religion we believe in. AA: Any advice for those reading your story? WL: A piece of advice for the students - Enjoy and treasure your study, friendship and life in SSC. Every tiny little matter/ thing counts; and the memory of all the happenings at school will stay with you forever and long after you graduate. I have to admit that SSC is indeed a great school nurturing great people, I regret missing the chance to choose this school before. AA: Would you like to share with us how you proposed? WL: This is quite a story. Lin as our Honorary Life Member, which membership is granted to person of eminence who has rendered distinguished service to the Association and the College. In an interview, Mr. Lin shares with us his experience in leading the College Council. AA. Mr. Lin, you were the Association's President from 1964-66, can you please tell us a little about yourself, and share with us how you became the Council's Vice-Chairman ? CPL I should first explain that I had graduated from St. Stephen's College in 1954. Long before I became the Association's President in 1964 therefore, I had already been very active for many years in the Association's events as an old boy. I often attended the Annual Balls, College functions, sports events etc. and helped with the Association's paperwork. When compiling the Old Boys' Register, I had the privilege of interviewing a number of Hong Kong luminaries such as Sir Tsun-nin Chau, Sir Sik-nin Chau and Sir Shiukin Tang who left a very strong impression upon me - besides being extremely successful in their business and professional lives, they also became leading civic and community figures in Hong Kong, having devoted so much time, effort and financial resources to their voluntary and philanthropic work. In the early 1960's, the late Bishop R.O. Hall, then Council Chairman, invited me to sit on the Council. After many years of service, I was asked by Bishop Peter Kwong (later Hong Kong's first Archbishop) and the other Council Members to be ViceChairman. When he stepped down as Chairman in the 1990's, Bishop Kwong and the other Council Members repeatedly urged me to take his place. However, although I was very glad to shoulder the duties and responsibilities of being the senior member of the Council, I was content to continue as the Council's Vice-Chairman. Happily, we are most fortunate that Dr Raymond Ch'ien is now willing to be named Chairman of the College Council at a time when the College is facing the twin challenges of entering the DSS sector and adopting the 3+3+4 curriculum. AA. What is the most memorable event, or challenge, over the years as the Council's Vice-Chairman ? CPL For me, the most memorable event is the College Centenary Ball in 2003. Never had a College occasion been so well-supported, so magnificent. Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee-wah, was our guest of honour. The Police band, whose leader was our own old boy, provided the solemn, ceremonial touch to our evening. During our centenary year, the other commemorative events were also very successful and well-attended by other senior officials and community leaders. The fact that we were even able to proceed at all with our centenary programme in 2003, during the depths of the SARS crisis, is testament to the commitment and co-operative efforts of our previous Principal, Mr D.R. Too, the entire College staff and all our friends and well-wishers. The most challenging event which I experienced when leading the College Council was when the Government announced in 1997, that St. Stephen's College would have to change to the Chinese medium-of-instruction by September 1998. To me and my fellow Council members, this decision was utterly unfair to our College, a AA. CPL AA. CPL AA. CPL 5 grave disservice to our students and teaching staff, and unthinkable - given our emphasis on teaching English, ever since the founding of our College, which is enshrined in our College Ordinance. Everyone, the Council Members, Principal Luke Yip, the staff, the alumni and the parents, all banded together in a concerted campaign and we successfully persuaded the Government to change its mind and to remove St. Stephen's College from the Chinese MOI list. I believe that we may well have been the first school to formally and publicly announce our objection to the Government policy which, in retrospect, Government is no longer actively implementing. At the time, some well-meaning nay-sayers suggested that our College should not oppose Government so openly, seeing that we were subsidized by Government. However, the St. Stephen's College motto "Fortitudinis Fundamentum Fides" gave us our immediate answer - our faith in what we believed to be right was our might. I am convinced that if we had gone along with the original decision, the St. Stephen's which we all knew and loved will have disappeared forever. Why do you love St. Stephen's so much ? Simply put, the College made me what I am. It taught me how to think and how to learn. In later years, this gave me the confidence to tackle any task or problem - after I had duly thought through and thoroughly researched the matter. And so, to answer your question, I cannot help but love St. Stephen's which is the better part of me. You have witnessed the evolution of the College over the past many decades: how you so feel the College has changed with time ? Over the years, the College has evolved with the changing times. We changed from a boarding school, serving affluent and privileged families, to a government-subsidized school accepting also day students and those from a more varied background. We also changed from boys-only to co-educational. Through everything, the College sought to continuously upgrade and improve its infrastructure and facilities to better serve our students who now come from all sectors of the community. How can the alumni community contribute to the success of the College ? Throughout the years, the loyalty of the alumni community, individually and as the Association, is beyond question. It has been vital in keeping the school spirit amongst our old boys and, more recently, our old girls alive and glowing. Given the changes which St. Stephen's is facing as a DSS school in Hong Kong (which itself is facing great change), the College and the College Council will need to call upon the Association for its active help and support in times to come. I am sure that the Association and each and every St. Stephen's alumni and alumna will respond. Nurturing Our Youth Through Mentoring Run, Alumni, Run To support the College's DSS Curriculum, the Association is participating in the Student Mentoring Program in collaboration with the College. Louie, St. Stephen's College A Press Conference was held at 2.30 pm on 20th Sept 2007 (Thursday) chaired by Dr. Raymond Chien, Chairman designate of the College Council. The purpose was to confirm the conversion of St Stephen's College to a DSS school starting from September 2008. Apart from the crews from three TV broadcasting Dr Raymond Chien, Chairman corporations, reporters designate of the College Council, from 13 local newspapers speaking at the Press Conference attended the conference. The reporters arrived at 2.00 p.m. that afternoon to join a Campus Tour before the start of Press Conference. Dr Raymond Chien, Chairman of the Press Conference, began by giving a short introduction on the reasons for the conversion to DSS, saying that the conversion would make possible a throughtrain between St Stephen's Preparatory School- a private school, and the College. He added that becoming a DSS school also gave the College greater flexibility and autonomy in designing curriculum and co-curricular activities, the management of staff, as well as the use of resources. Moreover, the College was founded in 1903 as a private school, so the conversion to DSS would mean a revival of its time-honoured tradition of privately educating both local and international students. Dr. Louise Law, the Principal, followed by giving a brief speech on the DSS distinctive features such as boarding in a picturesque and inspiring campus, the mandatory boarding in S1, S3 and S5 with a diversity of cocurricular activities to enhance the regular c u r r i c u l u m a n d t h e Dr Louise Law, the Principal, introducing and explaining the development of the whole mandatory boarding system of the person. The tuition of HK College in 2008 $50,000 per annum, payable in 10 installments, would be charged, inclusive of fees for the mandatory boarding programmes. The activities included Creativity Programme to help students develop their creative and innovative potential; the Service Learning Programme to encourage community service and the development of leadership skills; while the Mentoring Programme partners alumni with students to share work and life experiences. Student representatives at the Press Conference After the delivery of the speeches, there was a Q and A session to be followed by interviewing student representatives. They are: 1. Lee King Yan- author of a two- hundred- thousand- word Chinese fiction at the age of 15 2. Lee Ka Yan- enjoys being a boarder for five years 3. Kwok Ho Yin- student escort guide of The College Heritage Trail 4. Robert Maxwell-an exchange student from the States 5. Cheng Choi Ling-BOCHK Bauhinia Bowl Sportgirl (Co-ed School) of the year 06-07 Reporters interviewing our student representatives at the Conference The reporters showed great interest in the special cocurricular programmes of the College 7 To Our Readers Hello, everybody! This is my first editorial on behalf of the Communications subcommittee, a very exciting experience for me especially that I am only a recent Form 7 fresh graduate! Frankly speaking, joining the Alumni Association and being appointed as the leader of the Communications subcommittee is a rare learning opportunity as well as a challenging role for me. I have to learn my new university freshman's environment and study, while managing the Newsletter project - from the beginning on topics brainstorming to the date of publishing, the whole process is done within a month! That's really amazing, isn't it? Therefore, if there are areas of imperfection, please forgive us, and do share with me your comment. We promise to strive for improvement in every issue.
