The Man Who Fell to Earth WILLIAMSBURG Williamsburg, VA 23185 FOUNDATION The Man Who Fell to Earth – April 17-23 An alien crash lands on Earth seeking a way to ship water to his planet, which is suffering from a severe drought. The film maintains a strong cult following for its use of surreal imagery and the performance of David Bowie in his first starring film role. It has earned an 83% “Fresh” rating from Rotten Tomatoes as “a calm, meditative film that profoundly explores our culture’s values and desires.” R/141 min/1976. Labyrinth – April 21 as part of GFF Mug Night & April 23 A selfish 16-year-old girl is given 13 hours to solve a labyrinth and rescue her baby brother after her wish for him to be taken away is granted by the Goblin King. Director Jim Henson considered Sting, Prince, Mick Jagger, and Michael Jackson for the part, but David Bowie was the most suitable choice. PG/101 min/1986. Absolute Beginners – April 23-27 An original musical set in London during the pivotal summer of 1958 chronicling a time when teenagers first came into their own and racism was on the rise in England. Adapted from Colin MacInnes’ 1959 cult novel. PG-13/108 min/1986. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence – April 20-26 The film concentrates on a war of wills between rebellious POW David Bowie and camp commandant Ryuichi Sakomoto. Assuming his other prisoners’ unwillingness to protest their cruel treatment is a sign of weakness, Sakomoto is most impressed by Bowie’s enigmatic defiance.
